St James Park has come out top for atmosphere compared to the other 19 Premier League clubs.

The football fan website Football Ground Map gives supporters the chance to map out the various stadiums that they have visited, then you can add extra grounds as you visit them.

As part of the process, the site collects data from football fans who have visited stadiums all around the world.

They have over 140,000 football fans registered, including over two and a half thousand Newcastle supporters.

When visiting each new stadium, fans are asked to report on their experience.

One of the bits of feedback asked for each time, is the atmosphere at the stadium.

These are the rankings for the 20 current Premier League clubs on atmosphere.

These ratings have been collated over a number of years, not just this season’s matches so far.

As you  can see, St James Park comes out on top.

If we are honest, the atmosphere can be very variable these days, especially with Mike Ashley’s refusing to allow proper investment in the squad leading to struggles on the pitch.

However, when it is good, it can still be very good.

Like all English stadiums, they are desperately in need of safe standing areas being allowed, which would help create a better atmosphere no matter what the quality of football on the pitch is.

Who votes on this stuff? Take it they’ve not been to SJP for a number of years, it’s like a library these days other than a very small group that make an effort.

    • Toon Arnie

I think the bigger problem is the number of people who leave early – it really is shocking and the players must notice it.

    • WildBill

I was thinking the same. Great atmosphere? The best? If like to see the worst.

  • Leazes.

    Give us an ‘N’…..

    …… I said Give us an ‘N’…..

    • Ron

      N N

    • Wor Lass

With an N and an E and a WC, an A and an S and a TLE …..!

      • Leazes.

……too late, the moment has gone….. its been asset stripped by Justin Barnes.

  • Themoscow72

The atmosphere at St James’s last season was extra special and that was mainly due to Gallowgate and Wor Flags groups who put in a tremendous amount of time and effort putting on spectacular displays which lifted the players.
However this season they joined up with the militants producing a pathetic plastic banner which only creates negativity. Shame on them.

    • Mung Bean

I suppose they should make one big Sports Direct United banner, sporting text like “Thanks Mike, for the interest free loan”.

      • Themoscow72

Good idea as so far it has saved us over a £100m in payments to Barclays I would contribute to that.

        • Mung Bean

Two relegations later, a probable third on the way, and another 60’ish mill (on the back of those relegations) owed to our very own Vegas loan-shark.

Spoken like a true company shill, of Sports Direct United :)

        • Toon Arnie

… it helps to balance the free advertising he’s taken from the club

          • Themoscow72

Well said think it evens itself out but still need more outside investment no matter who is in charge as not got enough money in the bank still to compete at a high level.

      • jinkyjimnufc

The stewards would be ordered to remove it – it may cause offence

  • Themoscow72

Mike Ashley gave you a singing section so use it and support the team. Protesters not welcome stay in Leazes Park and feed the ducks.

    • Toon Arnie

He disbanded the original singing section next to the away fans if I remember rightly.

      • Themoscow72

Yes because a few idiots spoiled it for the rest by singing anti Ashley songs. Then the flags had a meeting with the club and created a new one but they bite the hand that feeds them morons as they do not help the team with protests. They may as well be wearing a Chelsea or a Sunderland shirt.

        • Gareth Jones

Ashley may as well be wearing a Chelsea or Sunderland shirt…

        • Squintytoonarmy

You didn’t sing sack the board in the 80s then?

    • JohnnyH

We live in a democracy, and have the right to protest.
You don’t have the right to arbitrate on who is welcome to attend games.

      • Themoscow72

People are telling me on here to boycott the Wolves game so much for a democracy. So I tell people to go and not protest counter demonstration.

        • JohnnyH

          Ok then, you’re not welcome.
          Anyone agree?

        • East Durham Mag

Wish you would boycott this site.

    • Tweed Mag

Do you want Ashley to sell up and leave?

  • David Jones

At least were top of the table for something

    • Leazes.

      Ashley can leave…we’ve won something.

  • toonterrier

I left half way through the reign of the fatman as the atmosphere as well as the football was bluddy rubbish. Only been back once with a freebie and it was the same. Maybe supporters have forgotten how good it used to be or they’re all fans of fatty which is why they keep going to keep him happy. Please god find us a new football loving new owner.

  • Ian Armstrong

This made me laugh! Great effort in recent years for the few who are trying their best to get some kind of atmosphere going but if ours is the best atmosphere in the Prem then I would hate to see the worst. In all honesty, we haven’t heard a ‘great atmosphere’ for many years and you can count on one hand the amazing atmosphere at matches since the ground was made all seater. The sad thing is that most modern football fans have NEVER experienced a truly great atmosphere, the kind that sends you home partially deaf and with a sore throat. Long gone are the days when the roar belted out from under the Leazes Terrace roof was famous and long gone since the days of the Gallowgate Scoreboard and Corner. I really do feel for those under the age of 30 as like it or not, you really haven’t really heard a truly great atmosphere in our ground. The only way that it will return is safe standing as they do in Germany. Until then………..

    • Mike

Was a bairn living in heaton and u could hear the roar when town scored. Last real noise was keegan days

  • East Durham Mag

SJP has an atmosphere like a morgue compared to past decades.

  • BanJones

It’s far better going away mainly because you don’t sit down – that’s what ruined the atmosphere years ago. The assett stripper isn’t helping though.

  • wheyayeman

It’s louder in space most of the time ! Ashley has turned it into a massive library. There must be some dead grounds out there if we are top!

  • Mike

    Eh no way

  • Mxpx

Imagine what it’d be like if there was an ounce of excitement there

  • Fisherking

Has anyone noticed how are dialect is changing as in i sing oh newcasil we love you and listening to the lads at away games regularly they sing oh new castle we love you using to words has anyone else heard or thought about this newcasil newcasil new castle
