Southampton 0 Newcastle 0  – Saturday 27 October 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle making it 10 games without a win, 11 in all competitions.

Only three points from a possible 30 but Newcastle actually climbing off the foot of the table…

Jamie Smith:

“Meh. Suppose it’s not a terrible result at one of our least favourite destinations.

“Turgid and hopeless as a performance, with Dubravka to thank for the point that drags us to second bottom.

“Starting to think now which three teams could end up worse than us.

“No one can say though that he should have played x or put on y because that was our whole squad at its full capacity.

“Oh and Mitro did nowt as Fulham got battered 3-0 at home.

“Something’s got to give here like.”

Ben Cooper:

“In the game that no one wanted to win, no one won.

“Both teams played like an away side.

“Dubravka made two or three good saves, can’t remember their keeper making a save, not even sure they had a goalkeeper, they certainly didn’t need one.

“It was a fairly even game overall though and a third clean sheet out of five away games shows us that at least we can defend well enough to stay up, even if we can’t attack well enough to do it.”

Jamie Swan:

“We couldn’t score in a brothel with a suitcase full of cash and a fist full of blue tablets.

“Clean sheet and importantly not marooned at the bottom, due to the rest of the garbage down there.

“No matter how limited we are going forward we don’t let many in.

“Goal difference isn’t catastrophic, though three points and winless is pretty grim like.

“Best we can hope is a spate of one nils (our way), like Brighton getting three wins on the bounce.

“Happy travels to the boys and girls coming back up the hill.”

Nat Seaton:

“Dubravka thankfully saved us in the first half with a man of the match performance.

“Should be pleased with a point away from home but having travelled all this way to see such a poor game of football I can’t say that I’m going home pleased…”

David Punton:

“On the day that the NUFC crisis was laid bare on Football Focus we saw that play out on the pitch, with a United side incapable of getting a shot on target.

“A point’s not to be sniffed at but the lack of cutting edge and goal threat is a concern.

“Underinvestment strikes again. Winning a game is just a pipe dream these days.

“Southampton has never been a happy hunting ground for Mags, so maybe we can take some solace from this draw – which is a mega away trip to the south coast.

“After today’s piece on the BBC there is small comfort that more commentators in national media circles are now tuning into the shambolic way that our club is being run.”

Toon Bano:

“We controlled large parts of that game but we really need a quality striker or two.

Even by Ashley standards it would be criminal to not sanction one, given what  he must see…

“Too naive?”

Paul Patterson:

“Not a shot on target and destined for last slot on Match of the Day.

“I keep saying, ‘Never knock an away point’.

“Sadly, our home form isn’t backing our away form up.”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“Hugely positive result for me.

“I know the football is still defensive but in times like this we could with a bit of grinding out and earning points.

“Next two we need to start winning and I think four points minimum is required.

“Just remember we would have lost that 4/5-0 under Pards or Carver.”

George Stainsby:

“I’m saying nowt…

“In a mini league of nervous desperation, the bottom teams all look dire.

“We have to start winning, and now.”

(Sorry but Rafa talking nonsense after this shocker of a match – Read HERE)

  • Kenny

Rondon should start next week, Perez needs to be benched, drop Slomo & play Ki
and have a real go in the next 2 games.

    • Billmag

      Can’t disagree with that Kenny.

    • BigHairyDog

We had “a real go” against Brighton and lost because of a mixture of bad luck and more importantly, a lack of real quality. People are expecting miracles for a second season running.

Having a go and leaving yourself wide open at the back, causing you to lose to teams around you, then people will really have a genuine reason to criticise the manager. We’re paying the price after the Ashley skimmed £20million off the squad.

    • mentalman

There are too many players who know they won’t or can’t be dropped and are coasting at a time when we need them all to be at their best

  • JohnnyH

    Can’t believe the comments
We’re at the bottom of the table after 10 games we’ve got 3 points
And they’re happy with a point?

Where are going to get the other 37 points from?

    • Kenny

i think this season will be the lowest points ever to survive, maybe as low as 33 or 34

      • JohnnyH

You might be right Kenny, even so can’t see us getting 30 points
        Not a chance

        • Alreet

On current form im not sure we will be in double figures before xmas

      • WildBill

History tells us that 31 points is the fewest number that would have guaranteed survival (09/10) , looking at us, Cardiff, Huddersfield, Fulham and Southampton I’d say 30 will do the trick this year…I think we are worst of all unfortunately.

    • Alreet

The only way this will change is if we change tactics. Counter attack doesnt suit us. High press is beyond us. We have to get our passing game tuned, work the wings better, keep the ball moving and get shelvey back to his best controlling the midfield.

Him and diame were amazing at the end of last season. We need to dump Mo for a game or 2 and see if Ki, ritchie or muto would work better in there.

We have to mix it up now. Start Rondon with Murphy behind, keep kenedy on the left push perez out wide right. I think ritchie could be a good shout in the middle. Hes got alot of passion and it seems lost on the wing at the moment, link up with shelvey and they might click well.

The defence always picks itself so hopefully we can choke a result out of Watford, id take a deflection off a knee and a questionable offside for a win right now.

      • BanJones

Because we don’t score goals there is huge pressure on every pass, if a mistake leads to a goal there is no way back. Ritchie needs a change to get back to his best he just seems stale, still trying hard.

    • Billmag

At this moment in time there’s no way any of the bottom 5 will reach 37 points.

  • Alreet

We have nothing in reserve. The players are getting sick of the quality around them, this is the worst start of any season weve had and its all because of ash.

None of us will waver, youve heard the saying that the club will be here long after so and so leaves well guess what ash we value the history and heart of the club you have tore out and ripped up. You are the worst kind of an owner for any business, you see the bucks and couldnt care any less about anything below you. We were here long before you and will still be once your filthy scum face is gone.

Youve made a once proud city and area not only hate you but feel ultimate sadness for the slow demise of such a big heritage. Too many wrongs, too many stupid choices, too many corners cut and empty promises.

The time you leave is the next day in the life of this fine city.

Do us all a favour ash, take your lapdog and your striped tie and sod off back to your london moss covered toastool. We are done!!

    • Andy Mac

Feel your pain m8ty but as I’ve already said its a win-win if we stay up or
go down ? Fatso will lose out on his mega bucks sale (if he ever wanted a
sale that is) and without Rafa next season and possibly Lascelles and/or JJ we’ll be major candidates to do a Makem slide down to League 1.

Twice the Fat Oaf has been lucky getting back at the first time of asking but this time it’ll be almost impossible with the quality of players/manager we’ll be left with. Eventually the fat slug will have to part with his beloved Sh Direct signs and put up the for sale sign as TV rarely makes a foray into the 3rd tier.

Then just maybe we could organise a supporters buyout with 1p in the £ take it or leave it offer ? 🤔

Lack of quality, lack of direction, lack of ownership, leads to lacklustre performances….

…. a club with only survival to aim for will fail in its quest through lack of purpose.

….. Ashley has been allowed to not only strip the club of its assets but the squad to the bare bones, he got away with it because of the chronicles ‘friendship pact’…. see no evil speak no evil…..access training ground for Douglas and Ryder.

Douglas is under the impression that Charnley is inviting Ashley to participate in matches in the hope he’ll release funding….. read thar another way…. Ashley is withholding funding out malice…..when will it sink in at the chronicle….Ever?

    Stop spinnin it!

One key injury to Shelvey, Dubravka or Lascelles and we truly are down…. that is the strength of this squad….

    #BoycottWolves

    • Wezza

      Spot on.
The FCB also did another v sign when he saw himself on the big screen. I cannot believe how many people aren’t mentioning this.
All of the above and all the while giving everyone the V Sign. It’s a wonder why he gets the anger he rightly deserves.
      #BoycottWolves
      #AshleyOut

      • GToon

What u mean even he hates himself enough to give himself the v’s?

      • Leazes.

        Did he?

        • Wezza

He did indeed. This one may slip through the cracks enough to not even have to put a KBA lie out.

    • Rabid Dog

I wholeheartedly agree mate. The local press should be holding up a mirror to the club showing what it looks like warts and greedy owners all. I guess they have to pick sides and consider the potential lawsuits a greater risk than the community responsibility they owe.

And I too fear an injury to those players. In fact it is a horrifying thought.

      • Leazes.

Ryder is running a poll to see what support there is for the #BoycottWolves….

He’s going to have to knobble it soon….. as it was 70% in favour after half an hour….

The chronicle are trying to undermine protest but I guess the time that has come and people are saying I’m going to do something.

They will keep trying…. but we should offer an alternative for fans who must meet up for the matchday experience…..

WATCH THE MATCH FROM CITY CENTRE PUBS>>>>

Lets get the Pubs behind this too!

        • Rabid Dog

If the pubs could offer, show us your ticket and get a pint free after 3, it would be immense

          • Leazes.

Excellent…. shouldn’t need an incentive but hey!

  • GToon

Our worst start in 120 years. Another record under the Ashley regime.

  • GToon

My instant reaction to today’s game/result was ……. “oh”.

    • Leazes.

Jack Lacey-Hatton’s reaction is quite literally unbelievable…..he’s a media journalist and Man United fan…,

  • Realist

I heard many song today about Ashley and wishing him dead and have seen alot of people on here do it too, personally a think your all sickos and need to give your heads a wobble. I can’t be doing with people like this. Look at what’s happened at Leicester tonight and maybe this should make you all think and put things into perspective. My thoughts go out to Leicester city in general and hope whoever was in that helicopter survives.

    • Rabid Dog

“Give your heads a wobble”. What does that even mean?

    • GlasgowMag

I am struggling to get your point can you elaborate!!!

  • Matthew Reader

unfortunately, i really cant see anything but relegation this season. It’s not just one or two positions we are lacking in, the striker and number 10 issue(which has been one for about 6 years now) aside, there is no quality anywhere in the final third! Nobody is capable it seems of a decent final ball or a dangerous attempt from outside the box. As far as I can see there is no hope of wins against either Watford or Bournemouth which would leave us with having played Cardiff, Southhampton, Brighton, Watford and Bournemouth with maybe 5 points!!!

  • Down Under Mag

For the most part the whole squad looks flat and bereft of ideas. To not register a single shot on target in a game of football against a team that is also struggling is just simply not good enough.

As has been said, relegation looks a certainty because we just do not have the quality and we aren’t talking one or two positions that some panic buys in January will fix. We have a Championship squad (at best) because any saleable asset has been flogged by the owner for maximum profit and a gamble of being good enough to avoid relegation that once again looks set to backfire.

  • 5floorshigh

good to see the players actively supporting the boycotting of matches

  • fistsofsteel2

We’ve had a tough start to the season facing all the top teams. We’ve got games against the lower sides coming up and we should start getting a few wins……….oh wait!
