Some classic Mark Lawrenson logic as to why things set to be on the up for Newcastle United

It is Southampton v Newcastle this weekend and Mark Lawrenson has been giving us the benefit of his expertise.

In coming to his prediction for the game, the BBC Sport pundit goes into great depth with his methodology.

The amount of time he must have spent on working out all the factors is awe-inspiring.

All the permutations and statistics carefully considered.

Leading Mark Lawrenson to declare about Newcastle United: ‘I see this game as their turn to win.’

He predicts a 2-0 away victory based on the premise that it is NUFC’s turn.

The only bit of info he does quote is the stat that Newcastle had 27 shots against Brighton, Mark Lawrenson saying ‘If they keep doing that, the goals will come – and so will their first win of the season.’

Well if only it was that easy, Newcastle fans will struggle to remember a team that was so negative as Brighton last weekend. Sitting so deep against an equally poor Newcastle side which gave Rafa’s players such dominance of the midfield.

The 27 shots only included six on target and Ryan in the Brighton goal didn’t have to make any blinding saves, only two or three decent ones.

The reality of this match is that it is between two very poor and struggling teams, clubs with shocking form.

It pits together, one that has won only one Premier League home match in these last 11 months, against another that has won one game (all competitions) in the last six months (1 win in 15 in all competitions).

May the best team win!

Mark Lawrenson talking to BBC Sport:

Southampton really needed their point at Bournemouth last time out because it ended a run of three straight defeats.

“But because Newcastle have sunk so low in recent weeks, I see this game as their turn to win.

“The Magpies had plenty of chances against Brighton last weekend, with 27 shots at goal, but they could not take any of them.

“If they keep doing that, the goals will come – and so will their first win of the season.

“Prediction is Southampton 0 Newcastle 2.”
