Newcastle 0 Brighton 1  – Saturday 20 October 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle going down to their fifth home defeat in a row.

Only two points from a possible 27 putting NUFC rock bottom of the table.

Jamie Swan:

“What a celebratory feeling on the now almost torturous anniversary of NUFC 5 Man Utd 0.

“The ghost of good times past makes you realise what can be.

“But has never been a wake up call for our own tight-tw.t faced Scrooge.

“We are rock bottom, flat on confidence and creating an unwanted historical record of worst ever start to a season.

“Not going to lie, I’m a pretty optimistic bloke but it doesn’t look very rosy does it?

“Get mortal, go nuts, sleep in the shed, spew in a plant pot, urinate in your sock drawer, eat a kebab for breakfast… all of these are better than pondering about Ashley’s NUFC.

“Goodnight Vienna.”

Nat Seaton:

“The stats might show that we were unlucky or that their keeper had a good game.

“Reality though is a really poor performance lacking quality and at times urgency.

“Beaten by the weakest team to play here this season – sums up the seriousness of our situation…”

David Punton:

“A desperate state of affairs exists at our club.

“These are dark days again for all fans of Newcastle Utd.

“Winless. Lacking in goals, luck and strategic leadership.

“This reverse takes us to the bottom of the pile. The scenario has shades of the Mackems under David Moyes, just week after week the wins not arriving.

“There wasn’t much fight in that second half as our transfer window ‘spending’ comes back to haunt us.

“I’m not bothered what fans of other sides say, this mess was created by a summer that sucked the momentum away from that tenth place finish. It’s killed the morale of fans, manager and players.

“In football the manager is accountable too. Rafa isn’t getting much joy is he? Some will call for his head. Some won’t.

“Either way, what we can agree is that we’re very likely to be relegated for a third time under Mr Ashley’s ownership. He must be so proud he’s killed our club.

“As for the players. They need to wake up. As the rot sets in I fear a few could be texting their agents tonight looking for January sales.

“But hey, at least Hughton stuck it to the regime that sacked him.”

Toon Bano:

“We. Are. Going. Down.

“Say. We. Are. Going. Down.”

Paul Patterson:

“The linesman on the EastSstand side should never get a game again.

“What an absolute disgrace.

“On the field, neither should Perez or Kenedy.

“This club is as good as relegated.”

  • BigHairyDog

This is the price you pay when you have to make a profit of £20million in the transfer window, we look exactly what we are, a squad that is £20million short of being able to compete with even the smallest clubs.

    • Dave Pattinson

Brace yourselves for the anti-Benitez flak from the Ashley-friendly media. We all know whats coming and from where. Even Guardiola couldn’t succeed working for our beloved owner, but I can see Rafa leaving sooner than we anticipated,to be replaced by some poor desperate sod. ASHLEY GO NOW!

      • TheFatController

Can you imagine the players with someone like Paul Lambert in charge?

“The owner doesn’t want to invest, the fans hate the owner, and I’m a no mark. So how good do you feel ? “

Oh, and you’re still bottom of the league .

      • Dillon Tovak

I’ll have little sympathy for his successor, mainly cos I know it’ll be Pardew or Allardyce

        • nufcslf

          Very likely.

    • Dave Pattinson

Brace yourself for a barrage of anti-Benitez briefings in next few days & weeks from Ashley’s friends in the meeja, doubtless fed by KB. Even the great Brendan Rogers, were he to be so desperate that he quit Celtic and came here, would find life impossible under Ashley’s constraints.

      • Angelswithdirtyfaces

Worst case scenario is that he’ll be sacked anytime soon that Fatty has the whim, alongside a huge PR campaign absolving the FCB of all blame. New manager will be a journeyman who does as he’s told and keeps his mouth shut, and won’t get a ‘bounce’ anywhere near enough to get us to 17th. Possible a couple of average signings in January… I suspect we may even see Pardew back – as the FCB really hates Toon fans and will rub our noses in it.

        • nufcslf

Won’t even watch another match if that does happen. I couldn’t live with myself having the sheep not saying a word to those couple of rotten c**ts.

Cashley must go – and he hasn’t, in part due the ‘few pints with my mates, canny afternoon out, it’s my club, support the team not the club, it’s been worse before, I’ll protest in my current Toon shirt, I hope things get better but hope someone else does it for me’ brigade’

It’s not all your fault of course, but you certainly aren’t helping

Since promotion ‘brighton’ have invested £100m more than us on players.

    How can this be?
And where would we be had this money been invested into our team?
    Where has the money gone?

    • panther

we all know where its gone

    • Malcolm Fisher

Don’t forget Wolves. Newley promoted, spent a few bob and now sitting 9th with 15pts.

  • Hopey

  • Polarboy

Well we’re well and truly f*cked barring a miracle. Can’t see how we’re going to pull this round enough for a transfer window to even matter, and that’s making the big assumption that Ashley would even release funds in that situation. This is Ashley’s doing 100%. Anyone who gets on Rafa’s back is entirely missing the point.

    • Angelswithdirtyfaces

Yet there really are shedfuls of fans calling for his head, blaming him for playing defensive today (!), getting rid of Mitro and Gayle, etc etc.

      • Polarboy

Defensive? We had twenty odd shots at goal and most of the possession. We just don’t have a cutting edge, and we don’t have a cutting edge because we haven’t spent nearly enough on players. As for Mitro and Gayle. Rafa didn’t want Gayle to go but was forced into letting him go in order to get Rondon. We can argue who’s better given they’re different types of players, but the fact is that Rondon has a slightly better scoring record in the premier league.

Hopefully he’ll give us something if he ever gets fully fit. Mitro has said himself that Rafa needed him to play a certain style that he wasn’t able for. Clearly we haven’t spent the same money Fulham have in order to create a supply line and support for a centre forward like him. Obviously you may not agree with said people, but that’s what I would say to them.

        • Angelswithdirtyfaces

Totally agree . A lot of fans have been fooled into thinking that when we lose its always the manager’s fault, (he should have played 4-4-2 etc.) regardless of how royally he has been shafted by a lying owner, whose only concern is how much money he can suck out of the club.

      • Ram Kishore

Those ppl who says we were defensive yesterday live in a world called brainless.. I can see that we are missing Rondon a lot. what happened to Ki. We could have signed that guy valon berisha or sturaro..

        • Kneebotherm8

That would have cost money and our profit would have become a deficit………..not allowed…….

  • Martin

We will get relegated and Benítez will go either before then or after and with him many of the fans. Difficult to estimate Championship crowds next season but I would guess between 20-30,000. It will be a very long road back. No chance of Ashley selling currently whilst we are bottom of the league as no-one will pay what he allegedly wants whilst we are in the current state. The rest of this season will be toxic.

    • graham18

Since the FCB bought us it’s been very toxic

      • Kneebotherm8

        11 years of toxicity……

  • Andy Mac

Name me a manager who could get 20 goals out of any of our forwards ?🤔 or all of them ?🙄

    • Big Al 1967

Jesus managed to feed thousands with 5 Loaves and 2 Fishes
20 Goals from one of our Forwards? Jesus took one look and said ‘ No one could pull off that miracle’

    • Malcolm Fisher

      In how many seasons?

  • JohnnyH

Most of us who post on here have seen this coming.
We’re not surprised that the same championship level squad has fell behind when the rest of the league have invested.

This is not a Rafas fault, getting on his case instead of the waste of life that is Ashley will not achieve anything.

    • nufcslf

Not sure there are any actual people that have any football knowledge left. Certainly not the trendy wankas that go to Sports Direct Arena and don’t say a word. Even accept 5 straight home losses without one chant directed towards the fat c**t in the stands. Pathetic and lost sheep, the lot of them.

  • Realist

Does Ashley pick the team make the tactics?

yes he does, he starves us into that position

  • Tweed Mag

Well, we have BREXIT, prepare for PREXIT. Today was as bad as I have seen in half a century of going to St James’. Perez? Good grief. Ashley was surrounded by security throughout and they looked nervous. What a way to run a football club. Tosser. Dubravka and Fernandez tried their best, time for the rest to step up.

    • Polarboy

Even Dubravka was a bit wobbly today with his kicking. Can’t criticise Fernandez though, he got stuck in and was calm on the ball.

      • Billmag

Wished Lascelles had Fernandez’s passing ability he looked a shadow of the player we had last season.

  • Stephen Paylor

The end of last season was a huge sigh of relief. The owner had gambled starving the manager of enough money to really strengthen the side and it had worked and left us with cash on hand to really kick on for this season. Estimates were for a 50 to 70 million net spend and an influx of really needed quality. Up front and at left back being the most urgent i personally felt like we would get the 3 or 4 quality players we really needed to be a threat in this league.

Someone at the club that makes the decision had other ideas and thought i know what i will just gamble again and pocket the extra money. That gamble looks like it will fail. This is life i know but i have grown tired of it. In my life i generally have control over my destiny and i have found myself drifting away from the club as i feel no part of it any longer. Soul sucking parasitic fat leach can keep it and face the consequences coming his way from the some of the north east’s finest.

  • Proppaboots

Lets face it the FCB is going nowhere……
However lets not think we should not be able to question Rafa’s teams or tactics.
Plan A is often difficult to understand at home against so called weaker teams, but Plan B if there is a one only goes as far as one off and one on… change to system, style or urgency.
We were 0-1 down today with minutes left still passing it across the back four?
Brighton centre half Duffy stood centrally on the 6 yard line for all of our corners, after the first two went straight to him why did not the taker, Captain or Manager not have any savvy to try and hit front post, back post or just simply try to avoid the 6″6″ bloke not marking anybody but winning every ball with ease???
Tactical genius….sorry Rafa is not…. set up a defensive team to try and sneak a one-nil win….thats his forte.
On a final note how many times would Perez get blown over walking to and from the shops on a windy day???
    Answer to follow……..

    • Paul Patterson

I’m amazed Kenedy lasted the whole game, no left foot and cut in onto his right. ???? I don’t recall him whipping a ball in using his left. Not that he’d have much to aim for mind . .

    • TheFatController

Rafa not being a tactical genius doesn’t let Ashley off the hook – Ashley employs him.

Ashley employed Pardew, MaClaren, Carver, but sacked Hughton – so it’s hardly a good track record of decision making, let alone his deliberately negative decisions for the running of the club – no youth policy, training facilities or big signings.

Everything comes back to Ashley. And that includes him taking the blame if you don’t like Rafa.

If Rafa is getting us relegated, Ashley must act now and use the immense credibility he has among managers with his sacking of Hughton for not having enough experience despite getting us promoted and mid table, and total disrespect to Shearer, Keegan and Rafa, and go and get a quality manager who just can’t wait to work for him…

      • Proppaboots

Like I said in my opening line… the FCB is going nowhere… and for your information I can’t stand the fellow.
But to just think Rafa can not be questioned on tactics, team selection etc ……why?
If Pardew, McClaren, Carver etc were turning out one up front at home against so called inferior teams what would the terrace chants or these pages be full of??

        • TheFatController

As I see it people moan about Joselu, and muto, Perez and even Rondon gets stick.

And then Rafa gets stick for not playing two of them instead of just the one liability.

People can’t csll the strikers unfit for purpose and then criticise the manager for not playing two of them instead of one.

That logic makes them sound like they just like to moan at someone other than the real problem at the club.

        • panther

I agree, the way Raffa’s way of playing is effective is when you have an alonso, gerrard torres trio, not a shelvey, diame and joselu trio

      • molend

Spot on. And even if he recruited Guardiola, Klopp or Zidane, the players still wouldn’t be anywhere near good enough. If all those who played yesterday were sold in January, how much would we get for the lot of them?

        • panther

not enough to buy 1 prem player

    • Andy Mac

Take your points but Perez, when the wind is in his sails, will score goals as he did last season.

Confidence is the missing factor and you can’t buy that with Sht Direct vouchers

  • Spoon_Army

There is no pressure on anyone at the club. Ashley and his chums will carry on as usual regardless of any fan movements, Rafa can do no wrong and the players are at best average so we can’t expect too much. Not a healthy mix to get us out of bother.

  • Ashley-out

the team is krap, the club is krap, the 50,000 who attend the games are idiots and deserve everything they get

    • Kneebotherm8

      The owner is the krappiest….

  • Kneebotherm8

The year we finished 5th the FCB invested fck all………….the year we finished 10th the FCB invested even less……….is it any wonder we are where we are?……

1st game I’ve been to this season!! Attended the demonstration which to be honest was a bit of a joke!! Couldn’t believe how many fans passed by and basically couldn’t give a [email protected]!! Apathy is definitely set in I’m not sure how so many fans can go and watch this [email protected] every week without at least complaining. Totally gutted about where our once proud club sits because of one guys greed, I was going to say Ashley out but it looks like the [email protected] [email protected] is here forever god help us all!!

  • Mung Bean

… and I don’t begrudge Hughton collecting three points here, and dropping *Ashley’s club (meaning Sports Direct United, uncompetitive by design) where it firmly belongs, at the root of the table.

Something poetic about a previous manager, who was royally shafted & replaced by a Yes Man/Pardew, delivering this blow to Sports Direct United.

*I haven’t referred to this club as NUFC for a while now.

  • HarryHype59

Ashley now has an asset (SD United), who are a Championship elect team. As such, this club isn’t even worth £200m. Sad we are going down again, but the thought of the Fat asset stripper, getting his pudgy fingers badly burnt is a small compensation!

    • panther

      ony silver lining we have
