Michael Owen says that Newcastle don’t have a good record at Southampton.
Talk about an understatement.
Difficult to believe there is anywhere NUFC have a much worse record in the Premier League era, as it reads played 17, lost 12, drawn 4 and won 1 at Southampton.
The sole victory was in 2004 and since then the record reads lost four and one draw, that should really have been a win last season as Newcastle were leading 2-0 and coasting, before ending up drawing 2-2 and clinging on at the end.
The Premier League table doesn’t look great at the minute but if Newcastle lose on the south coast, it could look so much worse. At the moment Southampton are 16th and four points ahead of NUFC, this is at the very least a must now lose game, though there again, Brighton at home was a must win match for many fans.
Michael Owen says his Newcastle ‘optimism’ is beginning to wear thin where the fixture list is concerned, as despite having five games so far against clubs who finished top six last season, NUFC have also played four other teams and haven’t scored a single goal in over six hours of football – including home defeats to Leicester and Brighton.
Michael Owen though declares ‘I refuse to believe Newcastle are a relegation-threatened side.’
As for Saturday, he predicts a ‘valuable point’ for Newcastle.
Like Brighton, Southampton are one of the clubs that Newcastle surely see as relegation rivals. Last season Rafa’s team had a superb record against those other clubs in the bottom half, about time the players showed they can do the same this season.
Michael Owen talking to BetVictor:
“This is Newcastle’s worst ever start to a Premier League campaign.
“My optimism that the fixture list had been instrumental in that disappointing start is beginning to wear thin after back-to-back home losses to Leicester and Brighton.
“United don’t have a good record at Southampton and this is a massive game for both clubs.
“The Magpies had 27 shots against Brighton and I refuse to believe Newcastle are a relegation-threatened side.
“I feel they can pick up a valuable point on the south coast.
“Tip: Game to finish in a draw at 9/4.”
