We asked fans the question, which 11 players would you pick in your Newcastle team v Southampton?

We put together a list of the 24 players who could potentially be selected for this 3pm Saturday afternoon kick-off.

The response was pretty overwhelming.

Ten players seen as automatic selections, with only the one player/position in doubt.

Eight Newcastle players getting at least 91% of Newcastle fans selecting them.

These were Shelvey (99%), Lascelles (98%), Dubravka (98%), Kenedy (96%), Muto (91%), Yedlin (95%), Dummett (94%) and Ritchie (93%).

Then just behind those, you have Fernandez (86%) and Rondon (85%) also as overwhelming selections.

Rafa Benitez confirmed on Friday that Rondon is fit enough to be named in the squad today but it remains to be seen whether the manager thinks he is fit enough to start.

The final space in the team going to Mohamed Diame (52%) with just a very small majority of fans selecting him.

As alternatives, next best was Ki (25%) and Sean Longstaff (18%).

When you are bottom of the league with no wins from nine and yet there is so little debate about who should and shouldn’t be in the squad, this tells you everything about how weak the squad is.

This is how the team would look based on the Newcastle fan votes (percentage support for all players below):

  • Kenny

I think Perez will start, Diame has lost it this season and would be dropped for the fact the options are just as bad.
still think we can scrape a badly needed win.

  • Hughie

Statistically Diame is among the leading successful tacklers in the PL this season. Very underrated & often covers others errors. Perez and Ritchie are grossly overrated – anyone can do better than Perez and I would put Murphy and Longstaff ahead of him every time.

    • Clarko

How many time have you seen Longstaff play? What has Murphy done in his time here?

      • Rich Lawson

Murphy has been a disappointment, little sign of improvement but I would like to see Longstaff get a bit of game time, can’t hurt, either he steps up to the plate or it gees up some of the big boys to put in a performance ?

        • Clarko

          Sure.

    • Chris-Chapple

Having watched all but one of Newcastle`s matches this season i can tell you Diame needs to be replaced & sold in January

  • Billmag

For me the Captain needs to up his game he hasn’t been his usual steady influence this season, his ball distribution is woefull.

    • Wor Lass

That`s why he won`t be playing for England.

      • Billmag

        True.

    • Salty

He’s been awful this season, I’ve also commented on his distribution which is why he’ll never play for a too club. That ship sailed in the summer with Maguires emergence. I’d actually like to see a Lejeune/ Fernández pairing

  • 5floorshigh

would like to see Ki in place of Diame, bout time he was given a chance !……got a weird feeling Rafa will start with the Hoss

  • Chris-Chapple

match day squad of around 16, only four of them are good enough for the premiership over a season

  • Wor Lass

1 or 2% not wanting the likes of Jonjo, Dubs and Jamaal could be put down to mackems or idiots who can`t figure out how to do it properly (is there a difference?) but I would really like to know who the 6% who didn`t choose Dummy would have ahead of him.

    • Chris-Chapple

they must be the culprits for Joselu 7%

      • Wor Lass

He might be good in defence – he does a good job for the opposition`s.

    • Rich Lawson

That looks the business, best side we can put out, wipe the smile of Mark Hughes face (if he ever does)

To be honest it doesn’t matter who we pick because the football doesn’t matter anymore. We are a cash cow for the FCB and football is not the priority anymore. The sooner people wake up and realise this then we can go on with a boycott and boycott Wolves!
