Sky Sports pick out surprise player as Newcastle United top performer this season

The new Sky Sports Power Rankings have been published today.

The Power Rankings methodology reflects a player’s performance over the last five Premier League rounds of matches by awarding points to players for 32 different stats.

A heavier weighting is given to the most recent match in descending order to the fifth last one, with the intention of showing who is most in form.

Not a great surprise to see not a single Newcastle player amongst the top 50 Premier League performers so far.

However, Sky Sports also publish a list each week of who has been the top ranked player over the course of the past five matches, which means so far this season, with only five played so far.

For Newcastle United, it is maybe surprisingly Ciaran Clark who is highest rated so far, the defender starting  the first four games of the season and then replacing Lascelles at half-time against Arsenal. His late consolation header on Saturday no doubt boosting his rating.

To be honest, it is difficult to pick anybody out who has been consistently good so far for Newcastle, signs of promise from the likes of Fernandez and Rondon maybe, whilst Dubravka ok and others such as Ritchie and Yedlin a bit up and down.

Maybe the most telling thing though from the table, is the fact that of all 20 Premier League clubs, it is Newcastle who have a top performer with the lowest points total, even Cardiff having a higher rated performer.

No doubt a few people will remark on the fact that Mitrovic is Fulham’s top man so far.
