Newcastle United star flying high when it comes to top tacklers in Premier League
The general feeling of Newcastle fans appears to be that so far this season, Mohamed Diame is one of those who has been a major disappointment.
The perception being that the midfielder hasn’t come to close to matching the excellent form of the final months of last season.
However, official stats published by the Premier League, suggest that maybe he has been a little bit harshly judged.
Newcastle’s main problem has been creativity and scoring goals, only Cardiff and Huddersfield have scored less and they are the only clubs below NUFC in the Premier League.
As for defensively, Newcastle have kept clean sheets at Palace and Cardiff, whilst conceding eight overall in the six games.
Considering the other four matches were against Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham, then eight goals conceded in six games is more than respectable.
If you accept Mohamed Diame’s main job is to protect the defence, then surely he has to share a decent part of any praise for the resilient defending so far.
Added to that, Diame has also had three different midfield partners, in Hayden, Shelvey and Ki, so no continuity.
There is no doubt that Newcastle have found it a struggle so far but across the whole Premier League, only Everton’s Idrissa Gueye has put in more tackles than the Newcastle man.
Mohamed Diame making 23 tackles so far, with no other Newcastle player featuring in the top 20 tacklers in the Premier League.
Newcastle definitely have shown weaknesses but just maybe the Senegal midfielder isn’t one of them…
Premier League players to have made the most tackles this season:
27 Idrissa Gueye (Everton)
23 Mohamed Diame (Newcastle United)
23 Will Hughes (Watford)
22 Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester)
21 Aaron Wan -Bissaka (Palace)
20 Philip Billing (Huddersfield)
20 Etienne Capoue (Watford)
19 Ricardo Pereira (Leicester)
19 Arthur Masuaku (West Ham)
18 Luka Milivojevic (Palace)
18 Felipe Anderson (West Ham)
