Manchester City 2 Newcastle United 1  – Saturday 1 September 5.30pm

We asked Jonathan Drape-Comyn to give us his match ratings after Saturday’s match.

Newcastle losing 2-1 where they stuck to the task and it took a stunning 30 yarder to get the three points for the home side.

Dubravka – 9. Thought he had a really good game.

Couldn’t do anything about the two goals which were good strikes and he made several key saves throughout the game.

Most importantly though, and I’ve mentioned this before, he just exudes confidence in the back line. Caught and punched quite a few crosses into the box, very commanding.

Yedlin – 8. Aside from the goal, I thought Yedlin defended really well throughout the game and coped with both Sterling and Mahrez for the majority.

Of course it was a great effort for the goal and a great finish.

It may have looked easy but to finish like that after a 50/60 yard sprint is very difficult!

Lascelles – 5. Gave the ball away for the first goal and genuinely had a disastrous first half.

Looked uncomfortable at the right side of the centre half position if I’m honest (ironically after his supposed disagreement with Rafa).

Fernandez – 7. I continue to be impressed by him so far.

Excited to see him and Lascelles next to each other at home to Arsenal. Looks strong, confident and decent on the ball.

Clark – 7. Did ok!

No fireworks and I can’t think of him making any mistakes.

That is all you can ask on a difficult day for the defence.

Dummett – 8. A great defensive performance from both of the full backs in my opinion.

Obviously doesn’t offer the same as Yedlin going forward but on days like this, I have lost count of the amount of times down the years that Dummett has kept the likes of Mahrez, Hazard and others quiet.

Diame – 7. Another one who I thought had another good game.

Didn’t get a chance to really put his foot on the ball but worked hard to break up play and defensively looked solid.

Ki – 5. Really struggled.

Gave the ball away plenty of times and didn’t look like he was up to much if I’m honest.

A difficult game for him, perhaps like Perez not comfortable with the defensive set up.

Kenedy – 5. Somewhat of an improvement upon his recent performances but struggled to get into the game and didn’t look great when he was on the ball.

A hard game for all.

Perez – 3. Might seem harsh but I think he lost the ball every time he touched it and didn’t offer much defensively.

A 3 for effort basically.

Rondon – 8. A great display and exactly what you would expect from your centre forward.

Held the ball up, worked hard and provided a great assist for Yedlin’s goal. Promising from him so far!

Joselu – 5. Didn’t do anything at all when he came on.

Not sure why he replaced Rondón as when you are looking for a goal, why bring the most likely candidate to score a goal off the field?

Murphy – N/A. Not enough to judge him on.

Atsu – N/A. Not enough to judge him on.

I realize I’m a bit of a homer with him but will someone TELL ME AGAIN WHY ANYONE THINKS YEDLIN ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH?! He was fantastic today (as usual).

    • glassjawsh-got-banned

also Kenedy deserves a 6 solely for setting up Rondon to make the pass on the goal. I thought he looked a bit better today (though better than a 1 or 2 isn’t saying much)

      • Kenny

I like Yedlin & you’re right about Kenedy

    • mentalman

The formation we have played in a the last couple of games suits yedlin and he has played well going forward he’s still our weakest defender though

    • Wor Lass

Bit of Yankee bias? lol He`s a good lad and a decent player but needs to learn the defensive side of his game a bit better – I`m sure Rafa will be working on that.

  • Mrkgw

And meanwhile, Mitrovic keeps banging in the coals for Fulham. Sorry to mention this yet again – irksome I know. But, why he was sold remains a mystery to me.

    • Doug Sweeney

He also gave the penalty away that allowed Brighton to equalise – irksome If you’re a Fulham fan

      • steve

How did he manage to give a penalty away if he doesn’t track back or defend?

    • relaxed

He also gave a penalty away

  • SuperDesHamilton

Shocked he hasn’t complained about Dubravka’s distribution as usual 😴

    • Mrkgw

Dubravka was excellent. One of few better signings in recent yesrs.

      • SuperDesHamilton

        Absolute bargain

    • Jonathan Drape-Comyn

If it makes you feel any better he did boot one into the stands with our last kick of the game!

      • SuperDesHamilton

        That’s it then, crucify him

  • Kenny

Perez has reverted to being useless again, he just isnt consistent enough to start games, sorry but that’s a fact

  • Damon Horner

Atsu came on before Joselu yet wasn’t on long enough to judge? Is this just a lazy article or have you just taken another chance to bad mouth Joselu?

I notice nobody can say a bad word about Kenedy but here we are freely having digs at Perez….

    • Ashley-out

      because Perez was f#@ing useless

      • Damon Horner

All about favourites. Perez wasn’t a disaster today given the way the game went.

        • Foggy

Perez wasn’t really anything as usual. I think that’s the point. Overall, I didn’t think we did too badly today given the tactics Rafa employed. Not a pleasure to watch but they stuck to their task. Atsu and Murphy as I said before, are worthless and bringing them on is akin to throwing in the towel.

Hard to believe that Muto can’t get Perez’s spot as some point. If he can’t what was the point in signing him?

          • Toontaff

            Murphy scored there, last season……….

          • Ram Kishore

Why is it that u want all players to make an instant impact in a month?.. Don’t u know the.concept of integration and adaptation time for the player.. Likes of u wanted Thauvin to make an instant impact.. McLaren didn’t give him any time .. Boom he imploded, the signing that could have made a massive difference.. Rafa wanted to have him but couldn’t convince him because of that bad six months

        • Kenny

          He was terrible

    • Jonathan Drape-Comyn

Sorry i genuinely didnt realise Atsu came on before Joselu. I guess he just did nothing at all when he was on, whereas I wanted to make a comment at Rondon being taken off which i thought was silly.

Plus i often write these as soon as the game has finished on my phone!

I have never bad mouthed Joselu… and I am not sure where you have been if you think ‘nobody can say a bad word about Kenedy’

      • Damon Horner

Sorry, might have been a bit harsh, I probably wouldn’t have made that sub either. I don’t think Atsu did much of any consequence but his introduction must have just been an oversight.

        • Jonathan Drape-Comyn

I dont know who his knee surgeon is but he looks like he’s struggling to move since he had surgery

          • Ram Kishore

I tried to remember when was the last time he played that made us excited. Beginning of last season..On the left midfield position when Rafa played 4231 or 4411

Just got back from the game and reflected on drive back. Agree with most of your comments here. Rondon put in a great shift in a difficult game for him. Although I normally can’t stand the sight of Perez on the pitch I thought he actually held his position well in the shape asked until losing concentration later. Don’t want to see him on when we’re looking to attack ore though. If Muto doesn’t take his place we shouldn’t have bothered signing him. Atsu still struggles and considering he was poor In Championship I still can’t understand why we signed him after his loan

    • Ram Kishore

I think Muto still needs time.. i don’t want a thauvin situation panning out, without giving enough time to settle in some players may find it difficult

      • Salty

Agree Muto should be given an opportunity like all new signings. Hopefully he will grasp his chance as Perez had had plenty chances and doesn’t convince!

        • Ram Kishore

Imo perez is the most creative player in our team and most probable one to draw fouls for us than any other player..
