Rafa Benitez watched on as his team made it four defeats in four Premier League games at St James Park this season.

Newcastle very much the poor relations when compared to Leicester City.

Rafa’s biggest signing at Newcastle is £12m Matt Ritchie who was brought in for the Championship campaign.

In the time Rafa has been at St James Park, Leicester have signed 14 players for transfer fees bigger than Ritchie’s.

There was a lot of anger and frustration at St James Park but not aimed at Rafa Benitez.

Before the match, there were protests against the poisonous ownership of the club, Mike Ashley ordering his people in to take down Rafa Benitez and Kevin Keegan banners outside the Gallowgate.

Newcastle fans know the position Rafa Benitez is in, constantly undermined by Mike Ashley, he has been left with a team/squad that is clearly one of the worst three in the Premier League.

Today was further evidence of that, nobody on the bench where any sane person would say the manager had made a big mistake leaving them out.

At the end of the game, the Newcastle fans who still remained simply filed out of St James Park, no anger at all towards the manager.

During the game Newcastle fans did show anger and frustration when booing the substitution of Matt Ritchie but that is hardly new. Ritchie is popular due to his workrate but it is the fifth time in six starts this season that he has been subbed, with Newcastle fans booing the decision most times.

However, that is a million miles away from saying Newcastle fans were booing the manager, never mind claiming that after the game Newcastle fans ad ‘turned on Rafa Benitez’…

However, that is exactly what The Telegraph disgracefully did, putting up this headline:

‘Frustrated Newcastle United fans turn on Rafa Benitez after limp display against Leicester City’

To come up with this headline is totally embarrassing for The Telegraph and in no way at all represents the actual content of the article, which simply refers to fans displeasure at the substitution

At no time does writer Luke Edwards claim Newcastle fans were turning on the manager after the game, instead making it clear that it was Mike Ashley who was the sole target of teh frustration and anger.

  • Paul Patterson

Ignore the media. Its personal (sometimes paid for) biased agenda..

    • Ashley-out

the fact is he was booed

      • mactoon

The fact is, the crowd booed. whether it was aimed at Rafa because of the result, or Ashley because of the situation we are in is questionable. I know which one I would go for!

        • Kenny

the Fat Rat does a lot of things but subbing players isn`t 1 of them, i think the boos were out of frustration with the whole stinking set up & to be honest he seems to sub Matt when others players do not even warrant a shirt.

          • BigHairyDog

Did Joe Harvey ever take the wrong player off? Did Kevin Keegan ever take the wrong player off? Did Sir Bobby Robson ever take the wrong player off? So when did taking the wrong player off meant they deserved the sack, especially when he’s trying to put out forest fires with an egg cup full of water.

          • Kenny

            Who mentioned the sack ?

          • Tomb

Any criticism of Rafa seems to be being confused with wanting him sacked

  • Dillon Tovak

Taking off Ritchie instead of Atsu makes no sense to me. I still 100% back Rafa however.
Those that do turn on him, and inevitably some will, are just dumba$$’s that aren’t able to comprehend the real problem.
“Leicester won the league with a small budget!” Idiots. The same idiots that turned on Sir Bobby.

    • Ashley-out

what sense is there in playing Perez & Joselu when you have a couple of 10 million pound players on the bench, i wish someone could explain that one.

      • Tweed Mag

I don’t know how Perez starts every week.

        • Kenny

          i don`t think anybody does

        • Bowlsey

Because he’s still one of our best players despite his poor form, believe it or not. We aren’t exactly spoilt for choice when it comes to squad replacements either, as I’m sure you’ve noticed.

          • Tweed Mag

But he misses too many chances, over and over again. He could have won it last week at CP with a simple side foot shot, his overall strike rate is poor and has been for several seasons. Obviously we are not spoilt for choice and that is the main problem, but another option should be at least tried out.

    • Tomb

They did win the league on a small budget. Since then theyve spent a small fortune

  • Ashley-out

the fans were booing when Ritchie was subbed & it was down to Rafa

  • Damon Horner

Can’t ever disguise the fact some fans will turn on the manager.

Most of us know we have bigger problems than Rafa.

  • Leicester Mag

Always seems there is a lack of perspective. The fault comprehensively lies with Ashley but is Rafa doing a great job? That’s questionable. Is his job impossible? Possibly but currently the football and team are on a par with that of McNugget and Carve up. Should he be sacked? What would that achieve? We’d only get some hapless nacka. But I’m somewhat unconvinced he’s a managerial messiah and above criticism where warranted. His blind spots are worrying and even though he is forced to bin dip for players some of the buys are difficult to fathom.

    • Kenny

How much did your lass win off you ? 😂😃😂😃😂😃😂😃

      • Leicester Mag

Thankfully I’ve long since ceased betting we’ll win. Says everything when Leicester beat us and fans simply see it as expected. Not even bothering to take the p1$$. Will never understand how or why this descent into abject and deliberate mediocrity is tolerated.

        • Kenny

Beats me as well, I won’t go until Fat Man is gone

    • porciestreet

      Are they His buys….?

      • BigHairyDog

Are they the buys he really wanted or the ones he ended up with?

      • RAFmag

You do have to wonder why players like Hanley and Lazar were bought then never selected. We know Keegan had players forced on him and left because of it. It is no different now.

        • Kenny

          10/10

      • Kenny

        No

      • Mrkgw

        Absolutely.

        • Billmag

It’s a good job your mate never scored today otherwise this forum would have exploded.😀😀

          • Mrkgw

Haha, quite! Expected him to have done so. Gayle did – Muto to WBA in a loan reversal? 😉

          • Billmag

Well he did a cracking job for us in the Championship and the way things are going we will probably need his services again in that division.

        • GlasgowMag

Yes all the players Rafa have brought in have been his first choice don’t make me laugh!! have you ever wondered why there’s a sudden rush to buy players at the end of the transfer window!! Could it be because Rafa has exhausted all his choices I don’t even think he is getting his 2nd or 3rd choices!!! Cheap panic buys to fill spaces this is what Rafa has left to scrounge around for usually fodder from relegated clubs or players who can’t get a game for their clubs!! So please these are not the players Rafa have asked for these are the players he has been forced to employ from the lower reaches of the bargain bucket transfer section our illustrious owner operates within!! Ashley out!!!

          • Mrkgw

But, they were still his choices irrespective of whether 3rd or 6th choices. Muto for example looks way out of his depth. Murphy likewise and that was a case of £12m wasted. Sels, Manquillo, Lazaar, Atsu, Joselu, they were amongst buys sanctioned by Rafa for which we have seen little if any, return. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not having an unecessary pop but, I no longer support the theory that Rafa is the only way forward. This whole cult figure thing is a bit over the top for me.

          • GlasgowMag

There is no way forward for this club until Ashley is gone!! Yes you will get your wish soon Rafa will be gone but just remember as I had mentioned in a previous post be careful what you wish for!! Ps Murphy will turn out to be a good player, also to early to tell regarding Muto!!

          • nufcslf

I agree with both of you. This is such a load of shyt that everybody from top to bottom are open to criticism…including those are thick enough to pay and shoe up and watch it…the whole club is at rock bottom with no end in sight. Pathetic.

          • Kneebotherm8

They may as well just start at the bottom of his lists………we might get them in quicker that way…

    • kingfisher

Summed up perfectly Leicester.Ashley is the main problem but obviously even great managers make mistakes. If anyone thought it would be any different this season then they must be from another planet, and yet still the 50,000 continue to pay homage to Ashley.

  • BigHairyDog

It’s not lies, listen to radio phone ins, read social media and see the thousands that are excusing Ashley and blaming Rafa. Most are being stirred up by die hard Mitrovic fans or those apathetic to Ashley’s continued deconstruction of this once great club. They think top quality managers are lining up to take the job, top managers like Tony Mowbray,Steve Bruce, Andy Hessenthaler and Steve Evans!!!

    • Kenny

No way you can excuse the Fat Rat, they must be idiots

    • Toontaff

At least Steve Evans would make Ashley feel thin!

    • RAFmag

Absolutely blame Ashley and his asset stripping and lack of investment for the plight we are in. No excuses for him. No excuses for Rafa also, we have been too negative in matches and look clueless when we do get the ball. Mitrovic has gone, couldn’t care less about him. The next manager, god only knows. I agree on that much. Who would want it? I expect to be massively underwhelmed when his successor is announced.

    • steve

Literally no one is excusing Ashley, that doesn’t mean that Rafa isn’t failing to get the best out of what we do have.

      • Kneebotherm8

Yeah ………he should be getting better out of Joselu…….

        • Tomb

He chose Joselu over Gayle and Mitrovic. Vardy cost a million we must have been able to find a capable forward for the price paid for Muto

  • Spoon_Army

Ashley is the root cause. We know that.
The treatment though is not working. I’m old school. To bypass the responsibilities that Rafa has in doing the job he is being paid for is idiotic. Rafa is not performing. If he has his hands tied he should leave and be done with it, no hard feelings. Some of the worst football I have ever seen, and I’ll be honest if they brought in a duck egg to replace him I’m not sure it would be any worse. The new signings are a waste. Nothing is working. Is it going to get better???… I have no idea if it will. Faith in Rafa????…i have respect for him but I must admit I’m lost. Beer is my only retreat. I did not turn on him today and I didn’t boo him. I wouldn’t do that. I’m just a realist and be honest in what I see and how it angers me. 35 years and counting.

    • Kenny

Rafa is a rich man but even he can’t take a £6m hit to walk away

      • Spoon_Army

Apparently it’s the only reason he is still here. Or is that not true??

      • Billmag

He must be another one Kenny.

      • Martin Rooney

Of course he can the thing is he can walk away and get the money. If he’s not getting what Ashley has said he is getting, every penny, then the club are breaching his contract and he can go with no fear of losing the cash

        • Kneebotherm8

Verbal promises aren’t worth the paper they’re written on………no breach of anything there……..

          • Martin Rooney

Unfortunately they are, especially in circumstances like this

    • Toontaff

      Thank fork for beer!

      • Spoon_Army

        Indeed

    • Kneebotherm8

      Get McLaren back…………you deserve him……

      • Spoon_Army

        Got sacked for less????????………

        • Billmag

Got sacked for less are you sure ???? He was the reason we got effing relegated.

          • Spoon_Army

No.. Ashley was the reason ………Jesus

          • Spoon_Army

As Ashley will be the reason this time.

          • Billmag

And playing Aaron’s at LB away against Chelsea was a good idea.

          • Spoon_Army

It wasn’t a good idea I agree. As was the woeful performance I witnessed today from the east stand. If SMC served up that he’d be vilified.

          • Billmag

Well maybe just maybe 99-9% of supporters knows who’s to blame, especially when you see how much the opposition spent during the summer.

          • Ron

Those beers – are they home brewed?

          • nufcslf

The pair of the useless, clueless, spineless c**ts got us relrgated and nothing less.

          • Martin Rooney

The reasons we we’re relegated are
            Colo sending off at Sunderland
Leicester at home first goal offside
Mitro standing up straight kicked in head by ivanovic who only gets a yellow card then plays the ball in for the chelsea equaliser
Man City away mitro puts nufc 2-0 up two mins before half time chalked off but he was five yards on side stunned nufc are still badgering the ref when man City score to make it 1-1 at the break
West brom goal chalked off and denied a penalty when Evans hails back an nufc player about to score from two yards.
Man City home awuerro off side
Man u home given penalty for mbemba handling it from half a foot away not given a stall wall penalty ourselves
Leicester away Cardy heads back from an offside position for ogazaki to score
            That’s why we went down

          • Kneebotherm8

And every decision we got was perfectly correct?

          • Martin Rooney

We had one game changing decision in our favour all season gini was offisde for a goal against liverpool.

          • Kneebotherm8

Pure bad refereeing and bad luck we went down then……….nowt to do with Mclaren?

          • Martin Rooney

We went down by one point just one

        • Kneebotherm8

You’ve got a short memory………McLaren was given £75-£80 million worth of players in his short time here and the football was a fckn disgrace………we could neither attack or defend………..we leaked goals at an alarming rate and Mitrovic fed on scraps……a totally and utterly clueless yes man was Schteeve……

          • Ron

            Bang on

          • Martin Rooney

And Rafa has spent almost double that

          • Kneebotherm8

So you’re actually saying Benitez has had more support from Ashley than Schteeve?…………….

          • Martin Rooney

            What I actually wrote was
And Rafa has spent almost double that.
And is actually what I was saying.
            It’s a fact

          • Kneebotherm8

How much does that equate to each managers spend per transfer window………facts can be distorted…………

          • Martin Rooney

Doesn’t matter he’s had threecseasoth to prepare for he should have been building his squad.

          • Kneebotherm8

He’s useless really intee………..bring back McLaren he’ll be available shortly……

          • Mr T

Rafa Benitez, August 5th 2018: “My idea was that at this stage of pre-season everything would be completed and we would be ready and working with my players for one month – it’s not the case”

“If they trust us, give us the tools, we will deliver. We have done it everywhere and won trophies. In this case, I was expecting we could deliver something.”

“To balance the team we need four players. Can we do it? Yes. Can we do the ideal window now? It’s impossible because we have lost the opportunities. It’s a pity that after two months we are talking about the last five days.”

“It will be more difficult than last year. Wolves, Fulham, Cardiff, especially the first two, are spending money. Crystal Palace, West Ham, everyone is spending money.”

          • Mr T

Rafa Benitez, May 7th 2018: “Now I think we will have more chances to do what we want to convince players to come here.

“The difference last year was that I remember talking to a couple of players and (when you’ve been in the) Championship is always… oh fine, the city, the fans, the stadium, the manager, whatever you want to say.”
“The ideal situation is to have around 22 players and then three players from the academy that have the potential to do well. Can we do that? I don’t think we can do that at the moment.”

          • Mr T

            Not sure that’s quite correct.
One prominent website has us paying out £97m for transfers in 15/16 and only recouping £4m (a spend of £93m).
Since then the same website has us paying out £128.4m and recouping £147m (a profit of nearly £19m).
            It’s a fact?

          • Superdooperhooper

Mclaren was only here for 2 transfer windows and he wasn’t forced to sell before he could buy

    • Tomb

Dare to criticise rafa on here and you will get sworn at and called a troll. Any criticism at all means you would prefer McLaren back.

      • Martin Rooney

Too right Steve Mc under M Ashley had gone w see issoko mitro shelvey mbemba

        • SuperDesHamilton

What’s that in English, you fat spacker?

          • Kneebotherm8

Am still scratching me head at that one like…………

          • SuperDesHamilton

So it’s not just me 😂 two hours later it’s stilk a mystery to me like

          • Kneebotherm8

            😂😂…

      • Carverlier football

No, daring to criticise Rafa AND YET never criticising or even mentioning Ashley’s running of the club will get you called a troll. Not that I can speak for Kenny…

        • Tomb

I thought it should go without saying that Ashley is running the club badly. I havent been since he disgracefully fired Chris Hughton and as he continues to take the pss I wont be back till he goes. Rafa is a world class manager but I still dont agree with everything he does. Personally think we could be a bit more adventurous at home.

      • SuperDesHamilton

Or your patter is rubbish and that’s why people hate you

    • GlasgowMag

You will get your wish soon and we will have another yes man as manager!! Shame really just think if he actually got backed mabye that elusive trophy we have all been waiting for (50 years in my case) could of came to fruition!! Mourinho/Ped/KK/Bobby could they do any better with this group of players I very much doubt it!! As I said you will get your new manager soon but also remember be careful what you wish for!!! Ashley out!!

      • Carverlier football

Mourinho’s not doing that much better with a hugely superior squad…

    • Kneebotherm8

The new signings aren’t great but if you’re blaming Benitez for those level of signings then you’re deluded.

  • Toontaff

I’m trying to think of a word that sums NUFC up, at present.
    Putrid?

  • Billmag

I have always backed Rafa but as I have admitted before he isn’t infallible, even I find his team selection and substitution’s mind boggling at times, but if we can’t put our trust in him who can we put our trust in, it will make not a jot of difference who the manager is, be it KK or AS or Rafa the poisonous oaf that owns our club will run it his way or no way.

    • Kneebotherm8

His way or the highway……that’s where Rafa is heading for daring to speak out…….

    • Leazes.

The football doesn’t matter while this owner is still here…..its got to get a lot worse before it gets better….. this bunch of crooks have to go!

    • Popnbgd

Rafa is not taking the best out of team and players…I am not impressed with him at all….Team has a zero confidence, thanks to negative approach to the game….

      • SuperDesHamilton

You know nothing about football vodkamagpie. Another made up account I see. Savacevic a striker 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 utter embarrassment you are saying that. Bet your parents hate you

  • Tudge

No bite, no bottle from the players. I think Rafa has run out of ideas of what might work with these players, but his reluctance to try and change shape and tactics mid game when they are not working is very frustrating!

    • nufcslf

Cashley is the true reason for this pathetic excuse for a football club, but you are right in what you say. Try anything rather than losing the same way.

    • Peter

Perhaps Rafa is just getting ground down… It would be very understandable if he was….

  • Will In Despair!

Now you see who’s the boss, bow before him!

  • Bowlsey

You’re telling me that there are some people actually blaming Rafa’s tactics for our shocking start to the season?! I’ve heard of missing the point but that’s taking the p*ss!

    • Leazes.

Put Jensen Button in a Fiat Panda and some will still wonder why he’s being lapped…..

      • Bowlsey

After more than a decade of Ashley’s destructive penny pinching sh*t, I just cannot fathom how some people STILL seem so ignorant about the state of the club and how it’s run. Expecting Ashley to suddenly start running the club differently from how he’s been running it for over 11yrs now is the very definition of insanity.

  • Leazes.

I can’t find that headline they appear to have changed it to…”Rafael Benitez booed for the first time as divided Newcastle United fall apart against Leicester City”

It refers to the decision to substitution of Ritchie and not to as an attack on Rafa that the headline writer seems to have wanted to portray….. the Mag does this constantly, not getting the feeling for the article.

Luke’s article was basically about an ‘Un-United Club’….the headline writer’s synopsis was an attack on Rafa.

They changed it….but the Headliner still wanted to have a dig at Benitez!

    • Ron

      Agenda – again?

      • Leazes.

I can assure you Luke hasn’t changed sides.

  • Martin Rooney

I turned on him the blokes a boring toerag

    • SuperDesHamilton

      Ya ma is

  • Aussie Bill

I hear the refrain “it’s not Raffa’s way” but it’s not hard to imagine that Mitro and Arma up front would not be banging a few in by now. We did own them and the money could have been used in other weak areas, l think we will regret not trying to use them. There is no doubt that Raffa has the runs on the board but sometimes he seems to be stuck in his ways and lacks flexibility.

    • Malaysian Geordie

      I agree

      • Hughie_Gallacher

Well it’s hard for me to imagine. What evidence is there that Mitrovic or Armstrong could have done any better?

        • Popnbgd

What evidence is there that they would not…??…So far ,there is a strong evidence of 5 Mitrovic goals

          • Hughie_Gallacher

I am talking about evidence whilst playing in a Newcastle shirt. Mitro offered nothing; and Armstrong was simply up to top division standard.

          • Tomb

no one has more goals in england since February than Mitrovic, granted most of them were in the championship

    • Geordiegiants

Howare man Arma??? granted Mitro is playing alright at the minute, but do you not think that Rafa didn’t rate Mitro was told you have to sell to buy, then wasn’t given the money???
Get back under your rock you fool.

    • Carverlier football

Given that Arma isn’t even getting starts for Blackburn in the Championship at the moment I don’t think you can argue he’d be making the difference now…

      • SuperDesHamilton

Exactly I get sick of hearing the same old same old Armstrong isn’t good enough and that’s by a coach who works at Newcastle & Mitrovic wasn’t going work. Why can’t our fans understand this

    • SuperDesHamilton

Armstrong isn’t good enough for this league

  • Popnbgd

“Millions miles away from booing the Manager??????”…..and million dollar question is “who or what were they booing?”…..It was booing the manager decision to sub Ritchie…therefore fans were booing Rafa

  • Mike

richie is the fall guy why????? Was Perez playing? And the hoss total crp
