At the age of 19, Patrick van Aanholt played seven games for Newcastle United.
With Mike Ashley refusing to back Chris Hughton, the then Newcastle manager had to almost exclusively rely on free transfers and loans to get the club back into the Premier League.
Newcastle got promotion, whilst the loan left-back went back to Chelsea.
Never getting a proper chance, he spent further loan spells at Vitesse Arnhem, Wigan and Leicester, before joining Sunderland.
The mackems making a canny profit when selling Patrick van Aanholt onto Palace for £12m in January 2017.
Looking ahead to this afternoon’s match, the defender warns his teammates that the visitors are ‘a good team’ with ‘a good manager’.
He has a special warning to look out for Newcastle’s ‘sharp strikers’, hopefully we will see their emergence today…
Patrick van Aanholt speaking to Crystal Palace TV:
“We cannot underestimate Newcastle because they have had some tough games.
“They are a good side and have a good manager, Rafa Benítez, who is very experienced with other clubs.
“I’m looking forward to the game because it’s going to be good one.
“Newcastle have got a good team, but I think their strengths come from their forwards, and their togetherness.
“They have signed Kenedy from Chelsea and they also have Ayoze Perez, who is a good player.
“Newcastle have sharp strikers and we have to shut them down quickly, play our own game.
“We are playing at home, so hopefully we will be fine.”
