Aleksandar Mitrovic was always going to be an issue for Rafa Benitez and Newcastle United this season.

The great thing about Rafa is that he does what he thinks is right for the team/club, no matter what anybody else says.

Both he and Mitro himself, have made clear that there was no falling out, just simply that the striker doesn’t fit into the way the manager needs his centre-forward to play.

If Rafa Benitez had been allowed a £100m+ net spend in the summer like Fulham, rather than Ashley insisting on a £20m+ profit, then maybe he could have built an attacking formation that could have complimented the Serbian striker.

Instead, he wasn’t even allowed to spend that Aleksandar Mitrovic transfer fee, having to rely on a £2m loan deal for Salomon Rondon.

Mitrovic was always going to be an NUFC sideshow this season and Rafa would have been all too aware of this.

However, as I said above, he is still prepared to do what he thinks is the right thing for Newcastle United, despite the knowledge that there was every chance Mitro could thrive at Fulham.

He now has 16 goals in 22 Fulham starts and is currently joint top Premier League scorer with four goals.

Mitro is now also Serbia’s all time top goalscorer, getting another two very clever goals on Monday night in a 2-2 draw wit Romania, to make it 19 goals at a rate of one every 159 minutes for his country.

People say why still talk about Aleksandar Mitrovic now? Well, it’s hard not to.

  • Mrkgw

Thanks Rafa – another great move. Not.

  • Mike Adam

To all who said his level was the Championship maybe you can begin to think about saying, ‘I was wrong”. Not saying his start is proof enough yet, but start thinking about saying it!

    • mentalman

they only said he was championship standard because to say other wise would be to criticise rafa.

      • Mike Adam

        Yeah, imagine doing that.

      • Superdooperhooper

No it’s because mitrovic’s work rate isn’t good enough and we can’t afford luxury players atm . And whose fault is that?

        • Ram Kishore

The reason Rafa Mitro combination didn’t work is out there .. He’s a good player and obviously he ain’t a luxury player.
          Whose fault it is?

        • steve

Have you seen him play recently? He makes more defensive headers than anyone, that’s not a luxury player.

        • Martin Rooney

Ahh his work rate not good enough, that’ll be the key to success then, work harder in your own half don’t score and don’t let the opposition score.
Rather than work less hard, score beat the other team.

      • Popnbgd

Spot on mate….”in Rafa we trust” fan club is suffering from inferiority issues…They are blinded by Rafa’s trophies in a distant past and by his reputable name…They think if Rafa leaves ,NU will be lesser of the football club and institution….Wrong…No one is above the club….and NU can do it with or without Rafa

  • Popnbgd

Stories about Mitrovic not being suited for our style of play, are utter rubbish and lame excuse for Rafa’s stupidity….I don’t think he is bad manager or that he should leave, but his bad decision cost us loosing world-class striker…and he is only 23!!! Rafa’s work in NU is grossly overestimated ….

  • Keeganontherebound

Some of us also remember the World Cup where against the very best he looked distinctly average. The current Romania team are pretty poor. And Joselu’s goals per minute ratio is roughly the same as Mitrovic’s at the moment. If Mitro keeps scoring at this rate then good for him. But he’ll have not just proved Rafa wrong but a hell of a lot of scouts and managers who didn’t think he was worth a punt – he ended up having to drop a division to get a game. And of course the real issue is not whether Rafa gets everything right but why the owner won’t provide the funds to give him a centre-forward he does fancy.

    • Martin Rooney

Haha Joselu and Mito in the same breath FCS get a grip man as a 20 yr old he averaged a goal every two games as a newbie to the premier league. mitro proved his worth three year ago man. Rafas football doesn’t give goal scorers chances it’s about denying chances and hoping. It will work for him as he can train/manage people very but it’s normally not very good to watch and bad for the careers of people like mitro. Maybe we’d have stayed up had he used him more three years ago.

      • Keeganontherebound

I would have thought it was pretty obvious my point wasn’t that Joselu was a terrific player but that anyone can have good stats over a handful of games. Mitrovic didn’t average a goal every two games in his first season- he scored 9 in 34.That’s closer to 1 in 4. If he was a proven premiership striker why wasn’t there a queue of premiership clubs trying to sign him last January? He has potential but has flaws and is always liable to do something stupid – he gave away a ridiculous penalty the other day. We should be setting our sights higher.

        • Martin Rooney

Nee chance you’re getting away with that, games were he entered the field of play for 70 seconds can’t be counted as games in terms of minutes on the pitch he played 20.15 matches and had two goals which should have stood chalked off. As for the reason others didn’t buy him he hasn’t had the opportunity to show in the same way or is as old and experienced as mane firmino aguerro lukaku giroud lacazzette kane morata et Al for the big six teams who also have less of a need for a new striker as for the other clubs we’ll apart from Everton none of them could afford him at £27m possibly Leicester but with marhez vardy etc etc they didn’t need him either.

          • Keeganontherebound

HAHAHA! Mitro in the same breath as Mane, Aguero, Lukaku and Firmino!!?? You’re the one who needs to get a grip…

          • Benji

omg..you’re an actual [email protected] don’t bother Martin

          • Martin Rooney

Point was that he is not at their level so not needed by those clubs. Anyone with a basic comprehension of English should be able to figure that out.
You’re inability to do that with this is as much of a problem for nufc as Mike Ashley.

          • Keeganontherebound

You’re not getting away with that – you were clearly suggesting that given the opportunity and the time to develop he would be at their level. And if you think anything I say or do is as much of a problem for NUFC as Ashley then you haven’t been paying attention.

          • panther

Why not? He’s young, strong and enthusiastic, the right manager at Fulham has got him looking like one of the best in the prem

          • Jezza

Just ignore the troll, marra. He’s just winding you up to provoke a reaction. He’s not a Newcastle supporter, he’s a Manchester glory seeker. Even his fictitious user ID pays homage to a popular Manchester player of recent times.

          • Keeganontherebound

Cheers for the heads up – I did think it was weird a toon fan would think Mitro had scored a goal every other game in his first season.

          • Jezza

There are two of them, brothers to be precise, posting under around 30 or 40 different ID’s. They have been infesting this forum for years.

          • Martin Rooney

Happy to meet you for a pint, I’ll buy, before the game on Saturday jizza you can carry on your abuse then, whilst we p+ss wasel’s laughing at how dense ya are

          • Benji

don’t waste your time Martin. everyone who doesnt agree with him is from manchester…the sad lowlife is a complete [email protected]

          • Martin Rooney

I know you are right I should just ignore him

          • Mike Adam

Everyone who has a different opinion is a Lee brother, wrong again.

          • Mike Adam

            Every 2.6 games.

          • Benji

Oh shut up you utter bell end.

          • Martin Rooney

From the thickest t**t on this forum, I expect nothing else.

          • Mike Adam

Yes those of us who rate Mitro are Manchester glory seekers,
I am against name calling, but Jezza has called me and others Lee b

          • panther

Guess we’ll find out in May, but I always rated him and I think he’s gonna prove a lot of people wrong

          • Popnbgd

At the moment he is top goal scorer in PL….and he is the youngest…and your creepy laugh sounds as a laugh of mental patient

        • Martin Rooney

P.S. Mitro’s going to keep on scoring he’s don’t it everywhere

        • panther

Closer to 1 in 3, and he didn’t always start

          • Keeganontherebound

No it’s not. One in 4 would be 9 goals in 36 games. One in 3 would be 9 goals in 27 games. He scored 9 in 34 which is pretty close to 1 in 4. Not bad for a youngster in his first season here but hardly the stats of a ‘proven’ premiership striker.

          • panther

yeah i’ll give you that I was hammered in the pub when I posted, still a cracking player and I think will only get better, we mugged ourselves here

        • Mike Adam

Do the math, games equal 90 minutes. He played 2117 and scored 9, that is 1 in every 2.6 games. The great Rafa was instrumental in devaluing Mitro by only playing him for 89 minutes last season in the first half. I guess that was because Horselu and Gayle were knocking them in every match.

    • Mike Adam

Always about the owner, no matter what the subject. Pathetic excuse, just like three games of pool play in a World Cup. He scored the same amount of goals as Messi, a three game stretch means NOTHING.

    • Popnbgd

Your spineless statement should definitely be nominated for The most pathetic comment in this century….You are in denial mate

    • Popnbgd

……or maybe You are Rafa himself…just using fake profile…That’s it!!!

  • Mxpx

I think mitrovic could have been the man for us and desperately wanted to but ultimately we didn’t give him the ammunition

  • panther

Just a shame what a player we let slip through our fingers because we are too rigid to make it work

  • 5floorshigh

if he finishes premiership top scorer there will be folk on here still saying Rafa got it right………….reckon he get about 20 goals this season

    • Popnbgd

….or they will be saying Mitrovic is not “suited” for our style of play and formation….beyond ridiculous

    • StMichael

I said the same 20 goals and people laughed at me! Their opinions completely excluded the fact he already had Premier league experience, and he had applied all rafa taught him at Fulham. Lets hope rondons form continues.

  • Natturner26

6 in 6, not a bad start to the season.

  • Vodkamagpie

Once again they imply it’s Ashley’s fault

  • t00nraider

Did we get the full fee from the Mitro sale to spend this summer?

  • StMichael

One of rafas mistakes. All make them. Lets hope his other decisions pay off.

    • Popnbgd

We can only hope…I am pretty sure this stupidity will haunt Rafa and will come back with vengeance …I bet you Mitro will be one of the top goals scorers

  • Hobbit

Be careful now. The Cult Of Rafa “The Messiah” who can do no wrong is strong here. His blinkered followers will blame everyone and everything, from Ashley’s money to the tea lady, but just not The Messiah himself. He is strictly off limits.

Mitro can go on to score a hundred goals, and they’ll simply say that his style wasn’t in sync with Rafa the untouchable. Never mind that a good coach is one who should be flexible enough to adapt and change his or her style and strategy to the strength of their players, and not remain a stubborn mule-head whining all day.

Speaking on TalkSPORT’s Weekend Sport Breakfast show, Peter Crouch said: “I think anyone who played for Rafa at Liverpool at that time would all say the same thing.

“He was very stand-offish, he never gave you praise and when you were doing well he would always pick on something you did wrong. There were times when I think, personally, he did over-complicate things.”

    • SuperDesHamilton

See you’re spouting more rubbish you utter bore.

      • Hobbit

Says the guy who’s got Rafa’s short and curlies from last night still stuck between his teeth. Luv it :) Still reading my posts I see?

        • SuperDesHamilton

You love Rafa’s short & curlies or the thought that I love his short & curlies? Each to there own.

You’re the type of bloke that’s barred from stagecoach buses for sniffing the seats a bet.

          • Hobbit

Aw you poor thing. Floss harder next time. When’s your next appointment with Rafa? LOL.

          • SuperDesHamilton

            So which is it then

          • Hobbit

Sigh. It’s not “sniffing the seats a bet” dude. Think what you meant was “sniffing the seats I bet.” LOL

        • SuperDesHamilton

A skim through them I’d give you 3/10 you try I can’t fault that, but a bet you’d prefer to be writing & eating in crayon

          • Hobbit

Still reading my posts? How cute.

          • SuperDesHamilton

            Finished now like, 3/10

          • Hobbit

Keep it up. I’m sure your English as a second language scores will get better than the 3/10 you’re currently hitting LOL.

          • Hobbit

Sigh. I can’t keep correcting your English dude. I think what you meant to say was, “I skim through them. I’ll give you a 3/10. Can’t fault you for trying, but I bet you prefer to be writing & eating crayons.” The last part doesn’t quite make sense, but I’ll give you a C+ for being creative LOL

    • SuperDesHamilton

Benitez 100% rattled your wife like clarko

      • Hobbit

Not sure about Benitez, but your momma was certainly pleased after I rattled her :)

        • SuperDesHamilton

Momma, goodness me. Benitez has really rattled you. (And your lass) it seems.

          • Hobbit

As long as I get to rattle your momma, I ain’t complaining. Still reading my posts?

          • SuperDesHamilton

By all means, if you wanna play out fantasies on here be my guest. It’s better than playing them out on the little kids you touch

          • Hobbit

Ewww … you little pedo. Keep your hands in your pocket dude.

          • SuperDesHamilton

I get the feeling your dad was a toon supporter & that brings back the ‘memories’ like everyone you see black & white it brings back the times of him telling you to go upstairs and pretend he was an injured Newcastle player, you weirdo.

Guess what. I’ll block you so it means I win 😂😂😂😂 bet that’ll kill you

          • Hobbit

            Luv you too LOL

  • thewildchimp

I like Rondon but… He isn’t as good as Mitro and, more importantly: he isn’t our player. Even if he does great and pull us up, no guarantees he’ll stay. Gayle doing well, certain to leave – we remain with Joselu and whoever we get on loan… And without Rafa we aren’t getting any good loan deals.
    Rafa-Ashley bicker has cost us.
