I have written about it a number of times and I will say it again, you can’t underestimate how important/invaluable that it is, when you have a Newcastle fan like Alan Shearer on the mainstream media.
Not only that but Shearer is also on the most watched football programme, BBC’s Match of The Day – the top show for fans and accessible to all.
Whilst he is a Newcastle fan, and that is a helpful factor, far more important is that he is intelligent and clued up, when he speaks he does it with full honesty and knows what he is talking about.
As compared to the embarrassing sucking up to Mike Ashley that Shola Ameobi was responsible for (see below) yesterday on Sky Sports. Ameobi declaring ‘credit to Mike Ashley’ for the way he runs the club and claiming Ashley has brought stability to NUFC, this being the same NUFC that he has relegated twice in the last eight Premier League seasons.
Shola Ameobi also went down the shameful line of understanding why Newcastle can’t compete with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City, when that isn’t the fan frustration at all, it is the fact that Newcastle had the lowest net spend (a profit of £20m+) of all 20 Premier League clubs and there is no intention by Mike Ashley of even trying to compete with the likes of Brighton, Huddersfield, Fulham and Bournemouth in the transfer market.
Alan Shearer totally understands the reality and sums up how embarrassing Ameobi was yesterday.
Shearer declaring ‘No, I’m not happy…I’m exactly the same as the (rest of the) Newcastle fans because Rafa has not been given the ammunition to take the club forward.’
Alan Shearer can see the same as the rest of us, Mike Ashley is totally undermining his manager and the squad, and it isn’t by accident.
Alan Shearer talking on Match of the Day:
“No, I’m not happy (about what has happened at Newcastle).
“I’m exactly the same as the (rest of the) Newcastle fans because Rafa has not been given the ammunition to take the club forward.
“Again, Newcastle are in profit in this transfer window, around about £23m.
“Plus, for finishing 10th last year you get about £123m (in TV/Premier League prize money).
“I think Rafa Benitez will stay at the club until the end of the season, and there is no doubt about it that he will review it, because at times he must think it is an impossible job.
“At least we now all know where all the money has gone in Newcastle, which sort of sums the football club up under this owner.
“He did a magnificent job (last season), in December I think Newcastle were in the bottom three, so to get them to 10th position.
“There’s no doubt about it, that Mike Ashley will be looking and thinking: ‘What is all that fuss about? I’m making all this money. I’ve got a magnificent manager there and he’s getting us to 10th position’.”
Shola Ameobi speaking on Sky Sports on Saturday:
“You look at the amounts of money you need to pay to buy superstars now….Mike Ashley has come out and said he hasn’t got the funds to do that…to compete with Manchester City and Liverpool.
“He is a businessman, and unfortunately for the Newcastle fans, he wants to run his business in a way that is sustainable.
“Credit to Mike Ashley…because you look at the likes of Aston Villa, and these clubs who are struggling financially.
“The one thing that Mike Ashley has done for Newcastle over these last ten years, is to stabilise the club – where the club is running itself and we’ve got no debt.
“That’s credit to Mike Ashley but obviously fans of a football team want to progress year on year, they want to see big players.
“We can be quietly happy with our business…”
