Training ground clash reported between two Newcastle United stars
Late Tuesday night brought reports of a clash at the Newcastle United training ground between Jamaal Lascelles and Matt Ritchie
The report claims that the pair had to be separated by teammates after arguing about tactics and Rafa Benitez’ instructions.
The Mail say that in the build up to the Chelsea match, the two players argued on the training pitch and then when returning to the dressing room, it all kicked off again. Other players then splitting them up.
The newspaper quotes their source:
“Ritchie was basically saying: ‘Just get on with it, even if you don’t like it (the tactics/formation), it’s the manager’s choice.’
“They had a row on the pitch but it wasn’t finished there.
“It all flared up again and Lascelles went for Ritchie in the changing-room.”
The dispute is said to have been sparked when Rafa Benitez decided to use the three centre-backs against Chelsea and Jamaal Lascelles voiced his disapproval at how it was being implemented.
Sunday brought claims that Lascelles had been dropped but both manager and captain insisted it was a knock, though Rafa acknowledged that there had been some discussion about the formation/tactics, but insisted this was normal at any club.
The Mail add that once Rafa Benitez was made aware of the dressing room clash, he spoke to both players and they agreed to put the matter behind them, shaking hands.
I think it is hardly surprising that there are frustrations being shown by Newcastle’s senior players, the failure to invest properly in the squad meaning the pressure is well and truly on players such as Ritchie and Lascelles who Rafa will be heavily relying on this season.
