Salomon Rondon is now a Newcastle United player, until the end of the 2018/19 season anyway.

An official NUFC statement on Monday night confirming his arrival.

The statement also confirmed that Dwight Gayle had gone in the opposite direction.

Newcastle United official statement:

‘Newcastle United are delighted to confirm the signing of striker Salomon Rondon on a season-long loan from West Bromwich Albion.

As part of the deal to secure Rafa Benítez’s number one transfer target, Dwight Gayle moves in the opposite direction and will remain on loan with the Baggies for their 2018/19 Championship campaign.

Gayle scored 23 times during the Magpies’ 2016/17 Championship-winning season but found goals much harder to come by in the following Premier League campaign, netting on six occasions.

Rondón, a Venezuelan international, becomes the club’s sixth summer signing. He joins fellow summer arrivals Martin Dúbravka, Kenedy, Ki Sung-yueng, Fabian Schär and Yoshinori Mutō as the club further strengthens Rafa Benítez’s squad, which finished tenth last season.

Rondón said:

“It’s an honour to be here and I’m excited to get started with my team mates. “The clubs were talking for a long time and now I’m focused on the season to help my team mates to get the points to do well this season.

“It’s one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League and I knew about the interest of the gaffer, so I’m happy to be here.”

Newcastle United manager, Rafa Benítez, added:

“I am delighted to sign Salomón.

“When we were looking for options up front, we knew how important experience would be. Salomón has been in the Premier League for a while and he knows how demanding it is.

“He, together with Yoshinori Mutō, will give us different options and will improve the competition between the strikers, which is always positive for the team.”

Twenty-eight-year-old Rondón, who has 66 caps and 19 goals for his country, began his career at Aragua in his homeland before moving to Spain in 2008, where he enjoyed fruitful spells with Las Palmas and Málaga.

In the summer of 2012, Rondón joined Rubin Kazan, where his form alerted fellow Russian Premier League side Zenit St. Petersburg.

After just over a year at the Krestovsky Stadium, he joined the Baggies ahead of the 2015/16 campaign.

  • Polarboy

Looking like maybe N’Soki and then an unnamed as of yet centre back coming in to join Rondon and the rest. Very disappointing to not see a number 10 even being mentioned, so I’ll have to hope for some sort of miracle before Thursday.

  • Ben Jones

As part of the deal to secure Rafa Benítez’s number one transfer target.

    Let that sink in

    • Polarboy

Number one target with the money he had at his disposal.

      • Ben Jones

Quite, but to extrapolate would be folly

  • Milburn_Taylor

i look forward to another underwhelming season at Newcastle,
West Brom fans think they`ve got the better end of the deal

    • Ben Jones

      Oh? Explain their reasoning

      • Milburn_Taylor

how can i explain someone`s reasoning, i`m not a shrink. maybe you should ask yours

        • Ben Jones

So you’re looking at a load of wba fans reactions and non of them have explained why? OK different angle, do you agree with them and why

          • Ken.

            🤡

    • Paul Patterson

So do I, but I’ll still get behind him .

      • Milburn_Taylor

we have no choice, do we

    • Polarboy

Gayle will score 20, 30 goals in the championship if he stays fit, but there’s nothing to say that Rondon wouldn’t have got the same at that level. They’ve done well in the sense that Gayle is proven at that level.

      • Milburn_Taylor

you win a prize, correct answer

      • Duh

I think rondons stats were better than gayles last season and, in a team that got relegated and was managed by poorer managers than ours.

Stats don’t tell it all but, Gayle would have needed to improve a fair bit to warrant a starting place and I am not sure anyone saw that.

For Rondon, we will have to see, Rafa has some good and bad acquisitions

        • Milburn_Taylor

Rafa is restricted by the constraints put on him by Ashley,
do you think he`d be buying players like what we have at any of his previous clubs

  • Damon Horner

As much as he doesn’t excite give the lad a shot. Don’t think he will score too many but interested to see how it works for Perez.

  • Tony English

I see the new Arsenal gaffa said yesterday that he needs to slim their squad down, now he’s had a look at their players.

Chambers is off to Fulham, Perez is being linked to West Ham…(he’d be perfect for us) ….expect all their big loanees to go to London(ish) teams so they don’t have to up sticks…Watford…Palace…

    .

    • Ben Jones

World cup and short window have played havoc with transfers this summer, so many clubs leaving business till last minute

      • Tony English

How long before a big team breaks the self imposed window? If a European team buy Hazard after our window shuts…

        • Ben Jones

Interesting, be nice to see some of the top 6 unsettled inbetween

i totally agree ben jones. i always do my shopping 3pm on a sunday because i spend the last 3 months watching the telly

    • Brian Standen

Why would Perez be good for us exactly – his record is average at best?

      • Tony English

His link up play and harrying of defenders is excellent, and doesn’t show up in stats.

        • Brian Standen

I take it you watched him regularly. Look I’m not knocking you and I would like to see him here but not convinced about him

          • Tony English

I’ve seen him in reserves and a few other peripheral games as I sometimes take my son over there to midweek fixtures…we live about 200 metres from the stadium….and that made me interested to follow him a little closer.

          • Brian Standen

In that case I bow to your better judgement

          • Ken.

          • Ken.

            🤡

      • Polarboy

If you look at how many games he actually started as opposed to subed on, and the minutes he played overall it’s actually pretty decent.

      • Phil Yare

be nice to see 2 players called perez who are equally useless

        • Paul Patterson

Er, our top goal scorer last season?

          • Phil Yare

yes our top scorer with 8.

          • Paul Patterson

For an attacking midfielder that’s good. So not ‘useless’.

          • Phil Yare

hmmm. loses the ball a lot. however i think he improved toward the end of the season

          • Phil Yare

            he was useless today again

        • Monkseaton Magpies

The guy who single handily got us an extra thirteen points you no nothing about football nothing as without him would have been in the Championship. More trips to the seaside needed.

Decent signing better than what we have – end of!
I remember Demba Ba being similarly ‘welcomed’ by the fans……. and after a couple of games the knives were out!

Well he shut you all up and some!

Hopefully Rondon will do the same

    • Milburn_Taylor

Demba Ba was in a different class to what we`ve got

      • Brian Standen

I agree but the hordes did not think so after 3 games!

        • Milburn_Taylor

i`didn`t hear any discontent in the East stand about Ba and if you think Rondon can come anywhere near him you`re dreaming

          • Phil Yare

rondon looks rubbish so will likely be rubbish. demba ba looked great at west ham and very dangerous

          • Milburn_Taylor

            Ba was a top striker

          • Phil Yare

defo mate, was a great finisher. i reckon his chance to conversion rate was top drawer

          • Milburn_Taylor

wish we had one in his class now

          • Phil Yare

can’t believe no effort was made to keep him. but that’s mike ashley, every player and any potential is expendable

          • Milburn_Taylor

everything`s for sale with that guy

          • Leazes.

7 goals in 12 games for West Ham and prolific for Hoffenheim

          • Paul Patterson

Do you not think he can get us 10 goals this season. .

          • Milburn_Taylor

with support from Kenedy, Ritchie & Shelvey i think may get over 10

      • Billmag

To be fair to Rondon mate he’s been under two awful manager’s in Pulis and Pardew.

    • robbersdog

If he was that much better than Gayle, West Brom wouldn’t have been so keen to do the swap.

If I had to make a judgment call, I’d say he’s a slight upgrade on Gayle, but not by much. But hey, I’ll be thrilled if he proves me wrong.

    • Monkseaton Magpies

We could sign Messi and the Newcastle haters on here would still have ago. Meeting one of the militants in the Three bulls from nine in the morning on Saturday he wants to see if I am genuine. He will soon find out.

      • Superdooperhooper

Do you shout your pro ashley stuff in the pub ? BTW I’ve just seen your mate clarko off on the Dwight gayle thread

      • Danimal

Yes but we couldn’t could we? We can’t even compete for players with any of the other 19 PL clubs and several from the league below. And no one can give a satisfactory reason why, given our club’s regularly high income and fan base…and these last eleven years of excellent financial management.

        • Ben Jones

Non of the players we’ve signed would have signed for a championship club. Quite how these same championship clubs are out competing us is unfathomable and a baffling stance, can you explain?

          • Danimal

Several championship clubs and recent championship clubs seem to mysteriously have far more transfer funds available than we do. Perhaps their owners are actually trying to improve rather than stifle their clubs. By the way, it’s sickening to see how fast basket case Villa got new, ambitious owners in. Perhaps because the previous owner genuinely wanted to sell.

          • Ben Jones

what player recently signed by a championship team would you want in our squad to believe they’re out competing us?

          • Danimal

I’m questioning why they all have much higher budgets than us. If we had their budgets we could go and get some of the players the manager wanted.

          • ghostrider

They don’t have higher budgets. Some of them have higher panic rate to get back into the premier league. It’s not a budget.

      • Brian Standen

Try not to tear his leaflets up!

  • 5floorshigh

so which striker will Rafa start with against the spuds ? or is that a lie ?

          • Tony English

I commented on a post where he was thanking Leazes for a list of the mythical trolls they are paranoid about.

I told him the list was rubbish as one of the lads on there I know personally, so block me too. He decided on a different approach.

I don’t remember seeing his own name on Leazes list, I’m sure he has his crayons sharpened for another day of clowning.

    • Leazes.

      Does it matter?

  • scumtest

In fairness, this guy might just work out. Rafa used kuyt at Liverpool as a focal point for his team’s attack’s and whilst not prolific he got a few goals but it was about his hold up play and hard work more than anything. This might just suit Rafa’s tactics. Joselu does the hard work bit but as we know not the goals, Gayle will work hard but doesn’t have the physical presence up top, maybe Rondon can do both? Not saying he’s kuyt quality who knows it could work out.

  • Monkseaton Magpies

So six signings in and only one per cent of Mag readers said that would happen why do most of the people on here always get it wrong big style. Ninety eight per cent said two players only happy days Mad nil Club six.

    • Ben Jones

That’s almost a third of a squad, it’s an insane amount of signings, and maybe even more to come, what a time to be a nufc fan

The vast amount of people on here are clueless, negative and paranoid fools. They seem to love drowning in negativity. Leazes and the rest of the conspiracy crew should just start up a personal forum where they can whinge all day, and come up with theories of how Mike Ashley started world war 1 and 2. They are morons

is it great as youve taken loads of cockney sxunk

    • Danimal

I actually think we have improved the squad slightly, assuming most of the new players make contributions. But other clubs have improved more and we spent most of last season deep in relegation trouble. I don’t think anyone, even the Ashley fan club on here, thought there would be a negative net spend. Imagine what could have been achieved with £25m net spend instead of -£25m.

  • Toon River

Rafa is over the moon to get his top target, we finished 10th last season, and we are only one of handful of clubs who are financially stable. Can we please turn down the negativity now?

    • Ben Jones

I think everyone can agree with that sentiment now

you go to the Spurs game and give all your support to the “team”, a team that is more loyal to their pay packets and bonuses instead of NUFC. The FA, Sky Sports, owners like Ashley, football agents and players are making a MUG out of you, and your stupid blind loyalty gives them the excuse to get away with it. Greed is killing football and it will continue, until football fans decide to get off their backsides and do something about it. There is NOTHING positive about blind loyalty or being treat like a mug.

          • Ram Kishore

I’m sick of the players since yesterday man.. this standoff at this time of the season especially when things are not going well around the club.. shows our teams players to whom we stood up for last season are as greedy as those players many on here criticize (Owen)for being greedy like many players who played in the past (i have never been much critic of Marveaux, Oberton because I knew that is how one will be when u have a big contract)

          • Hughie_Gallacher

It’s not just about money. More about Ashley’s shoddy running of the club and the fact he never keeps his promises.
I’m pleased the players have stood up to him.

          • Ram Kishore

Maybe they are standing up for what u say.. yes the club’s being run in bad shape… I am not talking about finances here.. i am referring to not solving the issues with Rafa, not engaging with fans, keeping everything so opaque.. the price of the shirt . Now the players issue which could have been avoided atleast..
I blame all the people involved at our clubs management .. This includes Rafa and players to a certain extent in not giving a positive start to the fans.

          • Ram Kishore

Maybe what your are saying that players are standing up many reasons but Bonus is the most obvious one if the media reports are true..
Sometimes it feels like it’s only about bonus and nothing else..
The ongoing thing happening with Ashley may make u sympathize a bit with players but it was not right from my view. If they had protested after playing and achieving targets fine. because thats understandable .
But even before kicking the ball for the season, they are protesting , shows lack of class from the players..

Why is Charnley not clearing air on anything.. i believe there is something wrong in so many levels ..

      • Monkseaton Magpies

        You can write happy days.

and so here we are, getting all doe-eyed while fondly remembering the heady days when Ba and Cisse were intermittently being played out of position at the front of our lines… what a fat stinking mess we’ve become indeed

  • DeadToiler

Hope he does well. Let’s get behind him. A bit sad to see Gayle go but probably a good move for him

  • Scott Robinson

Rondon is a nice guy who guarantees 7 goals a season and on page 113 of Rafa’s most wanted list. We had to wait until Mitro was sold to even loan him. All the signings so far will prove to be average, except Kenedy. WHU, Fulham and Palace fans are all excited about the coming season, with justification. Burnley are in Europe and their squad is only a little better than our own as this league is poor below the top 6. Ashley, if he listened to Rafa, could be pushing for top 7 this season with some proper investment and building on last season. Two forwards for £50 million. The 4 clubs above are smaller clubs than NUFC. Work it out why very few are excited about this season who actually follow NUFC home and away. Look at Rafa, even he has lost enthusiasm; he’ll be on mogadon if ronodon doesn’t prove to be a hit. 6 signings and none of them are on the wanted list of any other premiership team, and folk from Monkseaton are out with their Sports Direct toon army flags celebrating????????????????????????????????????????????????

    • FatParosite

Until you can convince the fŮCƘtards at True-faith to even give up their season tickets, mediocrity has a home at the SJP.

    • Monkseaton Magpies

Yes very happy been out celebrating but heard two more signings on the way so will be a heavy week. Six great players in all ready.

  • FatParosite

Bishop spin ….. ‘Newcastle claim Rondon was manager Rafa Benitez’s number one transfer target this summer’
    Does anyone believe that…??

    • Big Hairy Man

      No

      • FatParosite

But Bishop works so hard….. especially with all the Clarko, Monkwearmouth, Ben Jones $hit he has to type….

    • Toon River

Do you know who is his top target is or was? Considering he’s been chasing Rondon pretty much all summer I think it’s safe to assume he was his top target. He’s delighted to get him. Let’s get behind the lad and the club and enjoy the moment

      • GlasgowMag

Your a nutter but I must admit your a funny guy!!!😂😂😭😭

      • FatParosite

So you’re saying if he had money Rafa would have still gone for Rondon….?? Take a break Bishop man….

        • Ben Jones

Hasn’t even kicked a ball and he’s written off by the fans because he’s not Harry Kane.

Can’t you at least be happy for Rafa for securing his target

        • Toon River

Only rafa can answer that but he’s clearly delighted to get him.

Dunno I blocked them all, you tell me!

I suppose by ‘more’ you mean more names…there’s only two of them!

    • drc74

the weird thing is the troll who basically has discussions with themself, 😂

    • Monkseaton Magpies

You mean the true fans are out. The Glasgow branch not down for the Spurs game but expect them down for Chelsea. Six signings all ready exciting times roll on Saturday.

  • Cuh

    • Callum

      • drc74

sports direct probs have a surplus of them european ones still

  • Lewis SG

I remember Rondon catching Yedlin when he was about to fall off his shoulder.

Now they are playing as team mates

  • ghostrider

I’d love to know what signings some fans believe we should be going in for?
    How much?
Maybe we should break our transfer record….no…in fact maybe we should smash our transfer record and pay 22 million for a striker and maybe offer 5 add ons if he passes certain targets.

Oops, wait a minute, we got rid of one of those, didn’t we?
And we kept a prolific 5 million striker in Joselu.

But yet fans are now moaning that Rondon isn’t anything even though they go with ” in Rafa we trust” mindsets.

Rondon and Muto might work well if Rafa uses them correctly.
It’s all down to how Rafa sets us up.

If he sets us up like he did in the first half of the season, last season then even Harry Kane and the likes would look bang average.

    • drc74

you answered your own question, Rondon and Muto, MIGHT work, people on here arent bothered about the the transfer record as such, what they are bothered about is the way that fat tub of lard who u love is panick buying players who are either proven to be weak or unproven in the prem leavue, so stop being a cockwomble who loves sucking the fat one off

      • ghostrider

        Hardly panic buying, is he?
If he was paying fortunes for unknowns I’d agree with you.
All I see is clever dealing in a climate of sickening transfer fees and wages/bonuses.

As for your mild digs. It doesn’t make your argument any more valid and it certainly does not aid you in making me change mine.
        D minus.

        • drc74

sorry, not panick buying, is the premier league starting in September, its not synced to your ps4 u know, cockwomble

          • ghostrider

            I sincerely hope you’re under 20.

          • drc74

why, do you fancy abit of young stuff

Rondon,Muto, Ki and £25m in. Mitrovic, Gayle and Merino out. Definitely leaves us weaker than we were at the end of last season.

    Only silver linings are:

    1. Gayle likely to score bags of Championship goals so value will be higher more when loan ends (like Mitrovic). Not much use if the money isn’t spent (like Mitrovic).

    2. Refusal to spend money could mean Ashley is genuinely looking to sell the club. I’m clutching at straws looking for positives here but you don’t pump loads of money into something if you’re planning to get rid of it.

I don’t see Mbemba for Schar plus a profit as a step forward either.
