Rafa Benitez as declared that Andy Gray is talking rubbish (as usual).

Responding to the disgraced TV presenter claiming that Newcastle United struggle to sign quality players because of the club’s location in England, the Newcastle boss dismisses that view as nonsense.

Rafa saying Newcastle United CAN attract players from home and abroad ‘because here you have all the potential, everything to be a massive club.’

Of course what is missing is ambition and willingness to pay transfer fees and wages, Rafa Benitez saying that the players will come ‘but we have to do things right’, adding that ‘everybody knows’ where the problems really lie.

Mike Ashley refusing to back his manager and of course as we all know, this summer once again broken promises by the owner to make ‘every penny’ available, instead a £20m+ profit on player trading which was more than any other Premier League club.

Players now wanting to come to Newcastle because of the geography is just nonsense.

Of course some players will want to go to London as opposed to a club outside the capital but for most, especially foreign players, they simply want to come and play in the Premier League and find the most ambitious club possible.

This is shown by big money signings (by Newcastle standards especially!) heading to Huddersfield, Bournemouth, Everton, Leicester, Brighton and elsewhere this summer.

Those players could just as easily have signed for Newcastle United if Mike Ashley didn’t run the club the way he does.

Rafa Benitez:

“Now they are saying that in the north east, they cannot attract players.

“Yes we can.

“We can,

“So we can do it…but we have to do things right.

“That is it and everybody knows that.”

The Mag – 23 August 2018:

Andy Gray speaking on beIN Sports:

“You have to be very careful because Newcastle fans have an expectancy maybe beyond what they should have.

“They haven’t won a domestic trophy since 1955, that’s a long time since they haven’t won any trophy since the Fairs cup in 1968.

“Yet they (the fans) still think they are entitled to whatever Mike Ashley has got, whatever his millions are.

I think Mike Ashley has done a really good job with them, they finished tenth last year.

“I heard last year that Mike Ashley was ridiculous (because) he didn’t give Rafa enough money – they were this, they were that – they finished tenth.

“Rafa spent more money and brought more players in and they might finish ninth this year.

“I dunno what they want?

“Do they want Mike Ashley to say here’s a quarter of a billion pounds of my money you can have it and spend it how you want Rafa, it’s not going to happen, It’s not going to happen.

“If you look at the investment he’s made in Newcastle I don’t get the stick he gets I really don’t. Then again, I’m not up there seven days a week the way the Newcastle fans are. I don’t know what they want from Mike I really don’t.

“He’s brought in Rafa Benitez he gets no praise for that, he brought him in he was the man that said I’m going to bring Rafa Benitez into the club and yet he gets no credit for that.

“It’s a difficult place to attract the very best players because most of the foreign players that come to the Uk want to play in London, Manchester or Liverpool they don’t want to play in the North East of England. So it’s difficult to attract the very best players up there.

“If they finish between sixth and tenth most years and win a cup or have a cup run unless they do a Leicester and surprise us all, I think that’s where they are.”

  • Big Hairy Man

Rafa is spot on. I seem to recall that we didn’t have a problem attracting world class players in the 90s and early noughties. The only things that have changed are the owner and the ambition. Manchester and Liverpool are no more desirable places to live than Newcastle, but the ambitions of the clubs are worlds apart.

  • relaxed

Rafa you tell it how it really is mate
Not what TFCB or his programmed retarded fukcwits want you to believe

    • Big Hairy Man

Dead right. I’d sooner take notice of Rafa rather than the rantings of a disgraced pro-Ashley sexist has-been.

      • Leazes.

Did you know that Brian Blessed in your avatar has a connection with Newcastle…. His G-G-Grandfather worked the Keel boats transporting coal from the Tyne to London.

        • Big Hairy Man

I didn’t know that. Bet he had the big booming voice as well. MAKE WAY FOR THE COAL BOAT!

          • Leazes.

            You wouldn’t need a foghorn

        • Hughie_Gallacher

You’re a mine of information, Leazes. Did you say once that William Wallace was buried beneath the junction of High Bridge and Pilgrim Street?

          • Foggy

Or was it just a bit of him?

          • Hughie_Gallacher

I think it was, but I was trying to avoid the gory bits.

          • Leazes.

No… when he was drawn and quartered they sent each quarter to different cities as a warning Perth, Stirling Berwick,

…..his right sword arm was hung at the bridge crossing Lorthburn (Grey Street) and High Bridge St….

Here’s something else for you 700 years ago Robert the Bruce owned land between Central Station and the Copthorne Hotel….he bequested it to an obscure order of Augustine monks who wore sackcloth, drank only water and ate no meat…. absolutely true.

          • Hughie_Gallacher

            Good info mate. Many thanks.

          • Leazes.

There’s no plaque on the wall….

ps ‘Lorth’ means ‘filth’…. Grey street was an open sewer 700 years ago

          • Hughie_Gallacher

Yeah, the source is marked, in Leazes Park.

It was a sewer much more recently, up until the 19th century.

          • Ron

Mike Ashley Lorth no it doesn’t work, Mike Ashley Filth, aah that has a certain …..

    • Jimblag23

That’s one of the reasons I like his stand up too.

  • Monkseaton Magpies

Keegan set attracting players to the North East is a big problem and sometimes he up against it when London clubs come in. Fortunately Sunderland and Middlesbrough are even at a bigger disadvantage.

    • Big Hairy Man

Ferdinand, Barton, Lee, Ginola, Shearer, Asprilla, Cole, Beardsley, Albert…..

      • 52k

        And the rest hairy dude

        • Big Hairy Man

The list is endless. How things have changed.

      • Monkseaton Magpies

Two were local and the likes of Barton, Lee, while good players hardly world class. Even Ferdinand did not win many caps.

        • Big Hairy Man

So you agree with sad old Gray that the North East is a [email protected] place to live. Shame on you.

          • Ron

Maybe that’s why he lives elsewhere? Don’t know what he said though he’s blocked.

        • Big Al 1967

But at the time highly sought after by other clubs yet Keegan sold the city, the club and the ambition to them and they came. Ferdinand would have won a lot more caps if a certain A.Shearer was not ahead of him in the pecking order
In his second spell he had Modric (voted best player at this years World Cup) and Hyppia lined up until Ashley’s minions got involved. He didn’t have a problem did he

    • Billmag

He had Luca Modric in the bag till your hero scuppered it.

    • SuperDesHamilton

Keegan took over in the early 90’s it’s 2018 now.

  • Jimblag23

The idea that Newcastle can’t attract players because of location is ridiculous. Newcastle is one of the best cities in the country, Leicester, Hull, Swansea, Portsmouth (when they were doing well), Southampton, Norwich etc etc have less going on as major cities but don’t get lumbered with this BS.

    • Leazes.

Keegan was sure that if you pay the money they will come….. and they did, not all top internationals by any means but a fair few, as opposed to what Ahley is doing now.

Keegan could sell the City unfortunately Charnley Ashley and this regime can’t, and won’t.

  • Lyle

Knowledgeable Andy Gray Leeds won the Fairs Cup in 1968 Newcastle 1969 another misinformation by one of these disgraced ex Sky so called Football Guru’s.

    • Leazes.

He’s not very good with numbers.

      • Spider

Leases he’s not very good full stop.

      • Ron

That’s why he crosses them out shouting “how much?” – unless we’re selling then an instant recovery. Scumbag filth

    • Ron

in sanskrit Guru means the one who dispels the darkness and takes towards light.
AG is one who dispels with the truth and talks a load of shight.

  • Big Al 1967

Players will go where they can get the big money and the club shows ambition to win trophies. Unfortunately under this regime we refuse to offer either

  • Wezza

We can attract them just will not. We could attract top players just because of Rafa BUT…
    1. We don’t pay the wages
    2. We don’t pay the going rate (or break transfer record)
    3. We say we can’t compete with Bournemouth.

  • SuperDesHamilton

If you pay enough and have a project that’s appealing players will go anywhere, we do neither.
