Mike Ashley has been feeling the pressure.

Newcastle United fans fighting back against an owner who as been an embarrassment in the 11 years (and counting) at St James Park.

This summer has been yet another opportunity wasted, Mike Ashley ensuring yet another relegation struggle instead of any kind of potential progression for the club.

Part of the protests saw Newcastle Upon Tyne MP Chi Onwurah present a petition to the House of Commons on behalf of constituents.

The petition pointing out how disgraceful his time at Newcastle United has been.

Earlier today we featured a letter that Mike Ashley has put into the public domain, a letter addressed to the Culture Secretary that attacks Chi Onwurah and claims that he is an excellent owner of Newcastle United (read it HERE).

Not taking it lying down, the MP whose Newcastle constituency includes St James Park, has replied to Ashley’s laughable letter.

Chi Onwurah via her personal website:

“I am pleased that Mr Ashley has finally decided to speak about his investment in Newcastle United, even if it is to the Secretary of State rather than the numerous fans, media and others who have attempted to engage with him over the years. My own attempt is here. His office responded by instructing me not to contact him again.

“However, his letter does not address the central point: the lack of investment in Newcastle United players which has left the club with one of the lowest net spend figures in the Premier League.

“The petition I presented is merely a reflection of the concerns and strength and depth of feeling of so many Newcastle United fans who contacted me as their Member of Parliament. I was particularly concerned by the ‘If Rafa Goes, We Go’ petition, knowing how important role Newcastle United plays in the lives of many of  my constituents I do not feel they should have to choose between their club and its ownership. A quick review of social media will show the petition was received overwhelmingly positively received by fans unable to get Mr. Ashley’s attention by other means.

“I’m very upset to hear that abuse has been directed at Sports Direct staff.  I invite Mr. Ashley to join me in my longstanding efforts ensure the proper regulation of social media.

However Mr. Ashley knows very well that the calls to boycott Sports Direct existed long before my petition and are generally connected to his appalling behaviour as a business owner rather than his record as a football club owner.

“Also at no time have I criticized the Newcastle United Foundation which does wonderful work in the community and whose funding is not, as Mr Ashley implies, entirely a consequence of his ownership.

“I will be writing to the Secretary of State, Jeremy Wright, to offer a meeting with myself and Newcastle United fans so he can judge for himself the depth of feeling on this issue and the crucial importance of football to my constituents

“Finally Mr Ashley knows I am a fan of Newcastle United as well as the MP for St James’ Park. I boycotted the ground for three years because of his choice of Wonga as a sponsor. I admit to being motivated in part by my support for the club and desire to see beautiful Premiership football continue to be played at St James Park.”

  • Scott Robinson

Great response. Hang your heed in shame those who said she shouldn’t be involved. Why not? She is a supporter with a brain and intellectually astute enough to see Ashley for what he is. Monkeseaton, ghostrider and the rest are the REAL embarrassment and would get a thick lug off most supporters. Thankfully someone with media attention is exposing the MA clown. Thanks also to those who expose the Ashley fan boy club clowns on here!!!

    • Leicester Mag

Great comments but those mentioned aren’t fans, this feigned support is simply for effect.

      • TheFatController

They’re fans of Ashley, so I wonder if they’ve are on the SD forums also, telling workers without ashley they’d have no jobs etc ?

      • Ben Jones

You don’t go to the matches

Who are you to say who is and isn’t a fan?

Or let me guess, in your perverse world, the people who go to the match CAN’T be fans, it’s the patriots staying away that are the real fans isn’t it, weirdo

    • ghostrider

Just ensuring she remains in office. What better way than to get the city on your side.
Maybe she can start the buyout fund and run the club as head, so she can actually walk the walk instead of talk the talk.

  • Paul Patterson

Fully agree, but it won’t do much good. Unless something criminal can be found on him, he’s free to do what he pleases and he knows it . .

    • Desree

We only need him to sell or commit investment and deliver on the promise of top 4 or win something.

Him going to prison doesn’t help.

  • Ben Jones

    Christ she’s a #netspendwanker n’all. She’s absolutely clueless

She seems to care about the club, you dont

      • Kenny

      • Ben Jones

You don’t understand my view, I’m doubtful anyone else will come along and offer more than taking nothing out, as that’s a sugar daddy and I don’t believe there’s any/many left who would buy us, we’re ripe for some chancer to pump us with debt though, but I’ve seen comments in here complaining that we have not tapped into debt based on future earnings so, happy days, win-win, for them

    • My Cashley

      #minority 🤡

      • Desree

I am tempted to unblock Ben Jones and Clarko – just to see what arguments they concoct to a picture of a clown.

        • TheFatController

Ben Jones is a weird one. Too weird for comfort so I have to always leave him blocked.

Little signs kept showing up of a manic tendency to veer from aggressive to passive to pleasant to flippant. Genius trolling but painful to see on here.

          • Ben Jones

It’s almost as if my response is based on the attitude of others towards me isn’t it.

          • Westdentoon

Very weird, trolling at all hours of the day, every day. It gives him a hard on without doubt!
I reckon he is a computer generated troll, unable to empathise or harmonise with the human race. One thing is certain though, he ain’t no toon fan. My bet is Mackem, ever grateful for the eternal disruption and frustration caused by Ashley.

          • SuperDesHamilton

Thought you were describing Leazes there!

          • Westdentoon

            Nah, someone else mate..

          • SuperDesHamilton

He has everyone’s head spinning on here they get absolutely raging which he wants

        • Ben Jones

Don’t bother. I’d rather respond to your nonsense without having to respond to your nonsense reply to it

  • Mrkgw

Well done to this MP for responding both politely and with the interests of supporters at heart. No-one can critice her for that much, surely.

    • Westdentoon

Well…there will be one or two on here who will criticise her that’s for sure! No names mentioned, but they are so boring and predictable it’s becoming tedious zzzzzz

  • Leazes.

Tyne Tees first article tonight interviewing United fans on Ashley’s claims that he’s a good owner….100% rubbished!

Absolute scoundrel, not a fit and proper owner….lets change the laws!

    • Kneebotherm8

      Absolute villain……………pantomime according to him………

    • drc74

it’ll spxnkseaton with different moustaches and disguises

  • kingfisher

Chi Onwurah quote : ” I boycotted the ground for three years because of his choice of Wonga as a sponsor.” Now that begs the question, if a member of parliament can boycott SJP for 3 years on a matter of principle, why can’t the thousands of season ticket holders do the same ? Good on her. shame on them !

    • Guest

She is a career politican, nothing more.

      • kingfisher

Yes totally agree, but I would guess most politicians think of their career first and constituents second, however any publicity that portrays Ashley as what he is can only be a good thing!

        • Milburn_Taylor

anyone who`s against Ashley will do for me

        • Guest

She’s a bandwagon jumper and not genuine in her motives.

            Newcastle United.

        • Guest

      • Superdooperhooper

        Fleckman? Is that you?

  • Davidelder888

Great response, and I agree she has as much right to her opinion as anyone else. The protests and campaigns need a figurehead someone with media influence. Its obviously rattled the fat man’s bones. Dispite constant torment lies and major fup ups I can count how many statements he’s made in ten years with out the need to remove my socks.

  • Mirandinha9

Well done Chi Onwurah! Credit to you. Whilst, his letter should have been solely focusing on what he feels he has done for NUFC, he cannot help himself to talk about his fears for his retail empire in SD. This is where his only priorities lie and therefore, reduced sales in these stores and minimising their exposure will affect Cashley. For all those who said he won’t give a toss about bad publicity, you’re wrong. He hates it. Let’s keep this up. Cashley is starting to get agitated by things. You see he’s not a machine, who can simply ignore things. People may have lots of money in life, but, they’ve got emotions and they’re always concerned about what people think of them. He’s rattled – what a day it would be if he jacks it all in and sells up because it’s more bother than it’s worth. You ain’t seen nothing yet Mr Cashley.

    • Desree

He is like Donald Trump. Only he can’t go firing the people who put pressure on him.

Keep it up, he will announce the club is up for sale. In the past this has taken off the heat. We must keep the pressure on until he sells orcommits to the long term investment and good of the club.

3 years ago 80m was spent on 6 players. 4 of them are gone and a profit of 20m made on those 4 sales.

Where is the investment? This is day trading with players, not building a team and certainly not investing in a club.

      • Guest

No he’s not like Donald trump because Donald trump is a great man, you’ll figure this out one day desree.

        • Desree

          Is that you Monkseaton

        • Benmagpie

Sorry but you blew it with that last comment. I’m all for open debate with an opportunity for all sides to air their opinion, but to call that scum sucking fascist a great man is beyond the pale.

          • Guest

Blew what exactly? People take this forum to serious from what I’ve seen so far. Why bring Donald trump and politics into a comment? Ask desree.

  • Hughie_Gallacher

Get in there. Suck on that, Ashley.

  • JohnCornwell’sHair

    She gets my vote!

  • Mirandinha9

Ghost rider, Ben Jones, Monkseaton Magpies – can you hear me Monkseaton Magpies?

Your boy Cashley is starting to take a hell of a beating!

    • Leazes.

For gods sake just block the troll and don’t invite him to comment, he has destroyed more forums than he has brain cells….two.

    • ghostrider

He’s taking no beating. The fans who believe he’s taking a beating are merely beating up themselves and the club.
It’s the club you’re hurting, not Mike Ashley.

The mere fact that sports direct is also targeted means this goes beyond fans just wanting a little bit extra. It’s pure bile and hatred by a small portion of fans with the rest just nodding their heads in agreement because they don’t want to upset the bullies and become targets themselves.

      • Toon Arnie

Inside that deluded exterior is a very bitter man waiting to get out. Please leave OUR website and post on one belonging to whoever it is you support.

  • drc74

eeeee fancy running a pr company that u cant advertise on social media

  • Leicester Mag

This is great but this and other protests will count for nothing next time we win and the flags are put down and the protests subside. We have to look to the future and that at the moment is 10 years more of the pig at his self defined, fan fed trough

    • Leazes.

It seems that the fans are United completely, but we’ll still have to change the laws on Football ownership to get fan representation into the board room….. that is the only way forward.

Never before has the gulf been so great between the super rich and the rest, they buy power and PR but we can hit back, and that must be the next step.

    • Davidelder888

Offering Rafa to Spain was the last straw. Ashley needs gone no matter what happens this season.. Protests need to be ramped up. We can’t let this go on.

  • panther

Tells you all you need to know Bournemouth just spent 25 m on a player , you could get bournemouths. Capacity on my estate, and we’re still scrabbling around in penny savers , it can’t be long till the established players all put in transfer requests, this is pathetic and so demoralising

    • Billmag

He said he can’t and won’t compete with a country, he won’t even compete with a seaside town.

      • panther

He wont compete with a five a side team

    • Milburn_Taylor

he could spend a £100m if he wanted to but he won`t

  • FatParosite

Ashley knows he has to come out of the shadows….. He can’t hide behind ar$esucking pieces by his mates at Sky or relying on Chimpanzee mouthpieces with zero intellect….. So long as the Daily Fail investigate properly … I don’t think the British Bulldog Samuel dug deep enough. However it should be in the public forum for the likes of the Guardian & Independent to get their cameo writers to pull apart Ashley’s claims.

    • Leazes.

Yes the TV companies dramatised the claims without confronting them which is unfortunate…. they really need to be ripped to shreds to put the issues to bed.

  • My Cashley

About time we had someone of a certain degree of prominence speaking up for the people of this great club and city. We need to keep the momentum going now, apathy is no longer an option

  • Brian Standen

    Dear Monkseaton Mike!

Can you explain how little Bournemouth can spend £25 million on a player and NUFC can’t!

A world class manager can attract big names yet we have one and he is not allowed to!

After Rafa leaves who will you install next as manager?

    Despairingly yours

    • Davidelder888

Why are people giving trolls the time of day. They clearly love the attention.

  • Toon River

Nothing will change. St James will be packed with the loyal fans while the armchair trolls on here get cheap thrills off hating newcastle and finding negativity in everything. We are about to start another season in the premier league with 6 new signings and people still whinge.

A very selective list of ‘reasons to be cheerul’ There.

So that’s an exhaustive list of positives. And for balance, you’ve left out the extensive list of negatives.

So that’s a brilliant one-sided argument you’ve made there. You’re too good for this site, truly.

      • Toon River

Ask yourself a question. If anyone offered Cardiff, Wolves or Fulham 10th place in the premier league would they not snap their hands off? Of course they would. That’s what we done last season. We’ve brought in 6 new players including Rafas top target. What more do people want?? We aren’t PSG or Man City

      • Guest

Your talking in riddles again I see.

  • Mark Davies

She is an attention seeking person so is he. Politicians and mercenaries like ashley. Same worth different boats

    • phildene

Indeed Chi Onwurah is not an attentions seeking person! she is that ward’s MP and is replying to being wrongly accused of not contacting him when she had. Chi is veery much for the people and is a true NUFC fan herself-who better to stand for us in this matter when Ashley has had the audacity to contact another MP himself playing yet again the victim part.
We need some one like Chi Onwurah on our side.

      • Mark Davies

Cant agree mate. Everything she does craves attention like every politician

        • Toonrobbybobson

Shes highlighting to will of the people. Whats wrong with that. The fact it has so much attention is more people are passionate about subject

At last a person in authority actually challenging the lies and deception spawned by this workhouse owner!! Now hands up the journalist who will break the ranks and investigate fully what is really happening at our club I’m sure it wouldn’t take much digging to get to the truth!!

    • Wezza

Well said, that is what I would like to know. But if a reporter, from the Chronicle say, reports the truth they and everyone else will be banned from SJP. A worthy price to pay I say.

    • Paul Patterson

      ‘Workhouse Owner’ Spot on ..

    • Billmag

The local press won’t do anything for fear of losing there perks.

      • Desree

Perks? Like breaking exclusives for record transfer loan signings! Or bargain bin transfer targets.

Maybe people would buy the chron again if it represented them vs being a PR mouthpiece for NUFC.

    • Tweed Mag

The reporter on Look North stumbled through his piece. Ashley must have had no idea his letter was going to make matters worse.

  • Wezza

Good on Chi Onwurah, Ashley is like a cowering rat “what me? she did it” We are seeing MA well and truly rattled here.

  • Max powers

We all know Ashley is a complete a#shole no doubt, but couple of things that have happened have really pis#ed me off . 1st wind up, the one shirt that should be the cheapest to buy is basically the most expensive, how the fu#k is that? Done on purpose no doubt, pretty obvious!!!
2nd wind up and the one that really gets to me is the immortal words “Rafa will get every penny the club generates” what a f#cking chubby lying wa#ker. Not many toon fans down here in Bournemouth but passionate and angry none the less!!!!

    • Leazes.

It should be the cheapest shirt as SD have the best purchasing power in Europe…. so it’s a deliberate act.

Email [email protected] [dot]co[dot]uk and complain

      • Milburn_Taylor

a very spiteful act, it show`s what he thinks of Newcastle

            Fatman and robbing

    • Jonas

The club must losing money if that ‘every penny’ statement is going to be stuck too. Since Rafa is tens of millions in profit.
That would then imply atrocious ownership. So even when he lies it all comes back to – Ashley is a god-awful owner.

    • Down Under Mag

The fact is there has been a lot of careful business and creative accounting to ensure that Rafa probably IS getting every penny the club generate…all the clever covering up of profits by “onerous” payments, the outgoing players sold on installments and incoming ones on all up front payments make sure that the actual money available is very small. The fact is, if Rafa had signed a new deal that Ashley wanted before giving over money, I think we all know that the only thing that would have happened is Rafa would be stuck in a new longer contract without a break clause and still be scraping the bottom of the spare change purse looking for footballing scraps!

      • Toonrobbybobson

Its simple. The club is in debt to him so he can technically dictate terms based on the club in paper not being in profit as it owes him…

  • joe mac

must be rattled if he,s breaking cover!….keep turning the screw!

  • Milburn_Taylor

watching the match, Gayle is on the bench which is a strange one

    • Max powers

Thought he might be . What’s the chances he comes on in second half and scores guaranteed

      • Milburn_Taylor

tired legs and he`s got the pace, yes

  • TheFatController

His Clueso Boss Eye will be twitching again after that reply….

    Send him mad. Game on!

  • Martin

Odd that Fatty is concerned about Sports Direct staff receiving abuse given that he abuses them more than anyone with his Victorian workhouse conditions of labour and crappy zero hours contracts.

    • Bowlsey

I know! I would have thought that the way he runs his business and treats his staff amounts to abuse but hey, what do we know?

    • ghostrider

Why should they receive any abuse. This is about fans of Newcastle United wanting to spew bile at the owner which is bad enough, but why create issues with people who are trying to do their jobs for a firm that has nothing whatsoever to do with fans.
As for Victorian workhouse conditions. Get a grip.

      • TheFatController

Unfortunately for you, Victorian workhouse conditions was the term used by parliament in their review of SD practices.

So he has got a grip, it’s oficially recorded they have horrendous working conditions.

Maybe spend less time arrogantly dismissing people on here, apart from the grotesque owner of a business with Victorian workhouse conditions, and more time researching a man for whom you make a fool of yourself backing?

        • ghostrider

I don’t care what parliament says. There was no victorian workhouse conditions.
There may have been flouting par rules but almost all firms play that game.
Also, if workers are worried about victorian conditions then they should leave. Why don’t they?
If your answer is going to be , rent, food, bills, etc, then obviously they’re being paid, albeit way below what they deserve…just like 90% of the entire population of this country.

      • Martin

And how would you describe a company where woman have given birth in the toilets because they are too scared to take time off work for fear of getting a ‘strike’ and being sacked?

        • ghostrider

Yeah, shocking, because you can simply put your kid in a ram and immediately pass the kid out of the back door to granny who will look after it whilst you get on with your work, as though you’ve just went for a wee.

If you’ve never seen births then go with this story. If you have, then have a think on what you believe.
Just remember one thing. (Deny it if you want)
If Ashley was buying big named players are we were pushing for champions league placing with flair football and always in for a decent player, you’d be calling parliament doom mongers who are trying to bring down our owner and our club….etc….etc…..etc.

The problem is he’s not handing out gold plated presents as a minimum so he’s a scrooge victorian sweat shop owner who walks in to his sweat shops with a whip.

It makes me laugh when I see frenzied people going on like this.

          • Martin

The BBC ran this story and Ashley complained and his complaint was turned down on the basis that the story was factually correct. However, you can say ‘fake news’ to anything. I agree though that if Ashley was backing the club then there would not be the same spotlight on his business practices.

          • ghostrider

This is why I counter-argue people who go on the hate bandwagon.
It’s becomes all about a belief they’ve been scorned and want to serve their dish as cold as they can.

I’d take a guess that most fans and people in general would take a protective stance over Ashley if he was running Newcastle United into Europe against the best and also aiding charities and such.

Let anyone dare to call his outlets or his warehouses, sweatshop victorian labour camps as those people would be treated like lepers.

            That’s the nature of people.

    • MadMag83

You beat me to it. He abuses his own staff, constantly undermines Benitez, plasters his SD advertising all over the ground but doesn’t compensate the club. Yet a bit of pressure from an MP and he’s playing the victim card.

  • Jonas

Can be have all MPs with significant numbers of Newcastle fans and businesses that will be affected by an increased boycott pile in on top of this please.

    • phildene

Couldn’t agree more Jonas. We need as much support in professions and business as we can get.

  • Vodkamagpie

Correct me if I’m wrong. Ashley can do a lot of damage to this club. Now all you people calling others trolls, you would probably claim it can’t get much worse than it is currently, and that is a painfully wrong assessment. Ashley owns this club, he can do as he pleases. He could make a statement tomorrow, declaring the least amount of funds will be spent on transfers, and by that , I mean free transfers, young kids. Further more, every current squad member is up for sale etc etc. If he chooses, he could run the club down to league 2. I can understand how he has decided to run the club. I believe he gives charnley a limit of squad members allowed, wage budget restrictions, which basically restrict the club purchasing high transfer fee players, as they would demand certain level of wages. I have been labeled a so called troll, however, I do believe it’s time for Ashley to sell. Ashley has stated before his desire to sell the club, which might be the only way to keep the current manager, which if new owners come in and allows rafa the budget he wishes, then maybe rafa can deliver what he believes

    • Bowlsey

He could run the club down to League Two if he wanted to, you’re quite right there. He would on the other hand risk becoming about as popular as Peter Sutcliffe and possibly being murdered, but yes, he could do that.

      • Kneebotherm8

He can’t afford for his 💩Direct advertising vehicle to be in league 2….there’s no worldwide exposure for his company in that division…..and make no mistake that was the reason he bought this football club 11 years ago……purely as a worldwide advertising hoarding for his business empire…….he saw the way the premier league was heading and expanding worldwide…….it’s been a nice little earner for him these past few years and served the purpose it was bought for……

    • Angelswithdirtyfaces

He already has done a lot of damage to the club.

    • Toonrobbybobson

Id quite happily take that as the fans and club would be rid of him. It becomes affordable to fans that way.

However he wont allow that for 2 reasons.

      1. He has no intention to sell and wants the starus quo with premiership survival for minimal outlay.

      2. He will protect his investment as we have seen twice we have been relegated. But yoyo is fone by him as long as we come immediately back up. The prem parachute payments is creating and haves and have nots in championship now.

Our chance was off the back of the first relegation as he did not has his feet under the table. Hes riddled the club with all sorts now that I dread to think what legally a new owner will find. Things like leases and ties ins with SD for merchandise.

He needs to be careful though. There are some nutters out there who might take it too far one time hes out having a pint. NUFC is a passionate part of many peoples lives and some may cause him harm. I wouldnt be shocked. Hes really playing with peoples emotions.

      • Ben Jones

I think that’s why he wants out and no one wants in, too many emotional nutters , I agree it may be for the best if he banks any spare cash last season and this, sells a couple of our best players for around 100m and sells the club to the fans for 150m debt free, it’s almost an ideal scenario with a few obvious drawbacks

    • TheFatController

Of course you’re not wrong, any owner can do what they like to their club.

Bizarrely, most of them invest and seek to maximise their clubs’ potential.

You probably think they are idiots.

Is it your job to feed both of the trolls?

        • SuperDesHamilton

Yet again all you do is come on talking about trolls adding nowt, fat Middle Aged weirdo

  • phildene

Thank you Chi Onwurah for your reply to Mr Ashley. How dare he take such a stance playing the victim again.

  • foggy

The fat oaf mentions alleged abuse of Sh*te Direct employees.

Well you fat [email protected] how about all of the anguish, mental torture, humiliation and ill treatment you’ve dished out to the fans, employee’s of the club, players, and managers over the course of your ownership of the club ?

Relegations, renaming of St James, Wonga, derby defeats , early cup exits, Kinnear, Wise , Pardew. The treatment of Jonas, Keegan, Shearer.

Ashley you are a proven liar.

    • Leazes.

He’s a cowardly bully playing at being a victim, and he’s supposedly protecting workers that he pays national minimum wage with no employment rights…. very strange mentality.

  • Stephen

    Something bothers me.
Why was MA seen in the Bigg Market and The Strawberry on a match day when he first came to the club?
    He’s obviously been sickened off
I also remember him sanctioning the signing of Alan Smith and turning up with Smith on his Newcastle shirt.
These are not the action of someone who wants to alienate the fans
What happened on this torchered 11 mile journey.

    • Leazes.

He’d been sold on the idea by Sir Johns Hall’s experience after the win over Barcelona when the directors went out on the town to bask in the warmth and glory of a European night, with ‘some of the chaps’…..

…..Ashley got it out of the way without the glory and bought everyone in sight a drink instead because as Luke Edwards puit it….’he’s only here to run the club on the cheap’….

…which we discovered to be true.

      • Stephen

I’m still mystified at his mentality
He’s got enough money to last 100’s of life times.
But his own life expectancy cannot be great if the stories about the excessive drinking are true
Anyone can see that he should be using the exercise equipment that he sells.

  • MadMag83

It actually enraged me when I read Ashley’s letter. How he can complain about a lack of engagement is beyond hypocrisy. Just look at this MP’s attempts to engage him, his flippant attitude when he tried to resist answering the parliamentary committee over his running of SD. Ashley is a petulant snake who needs chasing out of town. House of Fraser would rather go under than be in debt to this clown.
