Nottingham Forest 3 Newcastle United 1  – Wednesday 29 August 7.45pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle losing the game in a dramatic finale, Rondon getting a 92nd minute equaliser, only for some shocking defending allowing a 3-1 victory for Forest.

With Manchester City up next, the season doesn’t get any easier…

Kevin Christie:

“Ugh. A pitiful display.

“Lacked any tempo or coherence – more like a drab pre-season friendly than a winnable game where squad players could stake a claim for a starting role. Fighting spirit sadly lacking too. Went out without a whimper.

“Sad to report an awful lot of negatives from a game that could’ve been a handy confidence-booster: Kenedy was woeful – leggy, lazy, lax, lathargic, at fault for two goals.

“Darlow inspired dread in the backline as usual and they pretty much all had an off-day with the possible exception of Sterry who did well in the first half but faded as the game went on.

“Atsu was his usual pointless self.

“Murphy again failed to grab the bull by the horns when given a chance to shine.

“Muto looked weak and way off the pace. Ki was slow in action and in thought. Longstaff didn’t make his mark on the game at all. Need I go on…?!

“One big plus though: a goal for Rondón. Hopefully the first of many!

“Away to City next. Another 5-4-1 damage limitation training exercise. Wake me up when Arsenal come to town!”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“All forward play seemed to be hugely unconvincing throughout.

“Not sure we deserved to even still be in the game come the 90th minute.

“Atsu and Muto were the only dangerous looking players in the first half but then were absolutely awful in the second.

“The referee obviously cost us with a disgraceful decision, but it was pretty disappointing throughout for me.

“Well done to all those that travelled. You deserved more than just the Rondon goal.”

Ben Cooper:

“As most of our new signings were on the pitch today, it looks like the £23million Forest spent in the summer was better spent than ours.

“A few of our players weren’t interested and a few more played very badly.

“The penalty we didn’t get should have got us through to penalties but individually and collectively we were poor from start to finish.

“Created little up front, let them play in midfield and got bullied at the back.

“Overall our second best performance of the season then.”

David Punton:

“Stoppage time madness at the City Ground.

“After a pretty abject display we get it back to 1-1, only to concede again and then denied a blatant penalty, before Forest go up the other end and make it 3-1.

“The lunacy of NUFC sometimes drives you mad.

“Rafa with seven changes to his starting line-up for a cup competition he pretty much admitted wasn’t a priority for our football club.

“The Ashley regime’s penny pinching is exposed on the pitch and that’s what we’re seeing.

“Yes, we’ve been unlucky here and there, but we’re also woefully short of quality and the squad depth is brittle.

“Not a happy night for our fans and some very tough tests lie ahead. Thanks Mike.”

Toon Bano:

“Where do you begin with that?

“Dreadful for 91 mins. Absolutely dreadful.

“Then Rondon shows what he is capable of and we think we got away with one.

“Then we turn into our true form and fold like a pack of cards almost immediately.

“Perez should have had a blatant penalty but knowing us we would have “done a Kenedy” and pi..ed it away anyway.

“This performance was disgraceful. The implosion was typical. The squad is terrible.

“This season is gonna be a long hard watch.

“Sick of it.

“Fans. You need to stop being sheep and boycott games starting now.

“This man Ashley has to go and if you continue to fill the stadium every week, despite not creating any atmosphere anyway, he will have NO reason to leave.

“Wake up and stop being so ignorantly selfish.”

Jamie Swan:

“Don’t feel like I want to waste me breath.

“90% garbage performance from a changed team.

“Ashley through penny pinching and neglect has got us to the point where frankly our first 11 is borderline good enough, so when we rotate and drop into the squad the writing was (and nearly always is) on the wall.

“Good finish by Rondon to take to extra time (you would effing think), then schoolboy defending on a cross for a Forest 2nd and gifted possession for a third ensured the brown and sticky icing on a shi..y cake. Darlow flapping harder than a humming bird on both didn’t help.

“Controversial non penalty on Perez? No surprise in being bumped by pathetic refereeing.

“Yes we were bad but we don’t need refs conkers deep in every team we play. Sick as. Can’t wait to play the UAE City Blues. NOT.”

Nat Seaton:

“Glad I decided not to travel down to watch that!

“Forget about the injury time excitement, you can sum up the game by the fact that we did not have one attempt on target against a Championship team within the 90 minutes.

“You’ve got to hope that things improve for Saturday…”

Jamie Smith:

“I didn’t watch it because I’ve had Sky taken out as they’re bast…s.

“Expected dross and it was worse than that.

“Can’t be bothered to be pi..ed off this time round.

“Confirmed tonight that NUFC will definitely never win a cup before I’m 40. Bit upsetting.”

Don’t know if I can be [email protected] commenting going to be bed!! Only thing good to come out of tonight at last someone with [email protected] finally saying it as it is on sky tv. well done Howey boy you may never work on sky again but at last someone finally sticking up for our club & fans great stuff!! Ashley out!!!

    • GeordieZebra

Bang on. Mark Warburton supportive and informed too. Nice to get the truth out there. Back to Wise and Jordan’s fiction imminently…

    • Kneebotherm8

He spoke as a true fan of the club……well done Steve…..even had self declared Ashley fan Bellamy stuttering……

  • nevfur

No offence but why ask Jamie Smith his opinion and even print it when he couldn’t even be bothered to watch it.

  • Clarko

I actually miss the Pardew era…

    Now that is f****d up.

  • Leazes.

No offence but why ask Lacey-Hatton for his opinion…. I see he’s changed from his Man United strip on his Facebook page now…. fake fan!

  • Billmag

Jamie Smith I was 26 in 1974 traveling back up the A1 after getting beat off the bin dippers I said to my mate’s it won’t be long before we win a cup how [email protected]@@@@g wrong could I be, in that time there’s been very little ups but a hell of a lot of downs following the club I love.

  • Kenny

The outcome was there for all to see when window after window you buy shirt fillers,
There wasn’t 1 good player in a Black & white strip last night. we were played off the park, out fought, out passed, lost nearly everything in the air & couldn’t win a tackle.
Rondon nearly saved us but that would only have papered over the cracks,
a shocking display ok and Man C lie in wait on Saturday.

  • Kenny

Wonder who’s bright idea it was to pay over
£9m for a Japanese striker, Ki looks past his sell buy date, the only good thing about last night was the final whistle.

  • Milburn_Taylor

How many more displays like last night is it going to take for it to sink in with some fans that the only way out is to boycott the club 100%, there has been some dark days at Newcastle but Ashley casts a shadow over the club that will take years to recover from, he is pure poison.

    • Toontaff

Did you watch this reserve fixture on Sky?

      • Milburn_Taylor

yes i did in the pub

        • Toontaff

The pub pays a fortune for Sky………..

  • Toontaff

Toon Bano watched Sky but tells fans not to go to games……………..Sky are the ones filling Ashley’s bank account, you know – 123 million reasons not to watch Sky……….they couldn’t have cared less if no one went to this game, as long as the tv viewing figures were high, due to so many ‘fans’ watching on Sky, who don’t want to give Mike money – Hypocrisy of the highest order.

    • Milburn_Taylor

Sky are the ones filling every clubs bank account, only one person is to blame and that is Ashley not Sky or BT.

      • Toontaff

I do not subscribe to Sky, never have, never will! They only want to see the ‘top 6’ hammering the likes of us. They give ‘us’ 123 million for the privilege.

    • Kenny

Ffs Newcastle aren’t the only team on Sky, if people want to watch football then they have to have it, get real

      • Toontaff

It’s an alternative view to the ranting loonies on here who wanted all 50,000 match goers dead! Sky fund Ashley’s love of cash- Sky need to be targeted.

  • texfitz

How on earth does Rafa still avoid criticism? He has signed some absolute rubbish and flogged some canny players. We have a squad with absolutely no competition for for starting eleven places. Fundamentally, Ashley is the cause – but Rafas tactics are slowly killing
Whatever love I have left for football……. well done to Mbabu for reaching the champions league group stages! Another blunder my the gaffer….

  • foggy

Don’t worry everyone we’ll have our chance of revenge next season when we play Forest again in the Championship……..thanks Mike.

  • Jezza

This is what happens when you make £20+ million profit in the summer transfer window. This is what happens when your playing squad is wilfully weakened to generate funds for a corporate takeover of a failing department shop chain. There is only one person to blame for the performances of this Newcastle team.

  • Stephen

Where is the players who was on loan from Chelsea last season?

    • Milburn_Taylor

Every player hits a bad patch.

      • Stephen

That’s more than a ‘bad patch’
my guess something not right !

        • mentalman

          he’s had no pre season

  • Gareth Jones

Somebody mentioned it on here the other day and I 100% agree – I’m all for us parking the bus against Man City etc. Sick to death of being the whipping boys (5-0’s, 6-0’s). Sadly these days that’s the best we can hope for. Good on Howey as well!

    • Chris-Chapple

Better be a double decker then

  • Longstaff, Fernandez, Sterry and Joselu were the only ones trying their best. Darlow, Kenedy, Schar, Clark, Muto all a complete walkover by a Championship side with a 35-year old Murphy causing us more trouble than Morata last weekend.
Our Squad is weak. If Shelvey, Diame, Dubravka, Lascelles, Yedlin and Ritchie are not on the pitch we can’t string a decent one-two together let alone score goals.
Muto looks like another 10m Murphy-like wasted transfer money. We bought Squad players, not competition for places – Shocking!

    • Chris-Chapple

the whole team was a mess, there is no excuse.

  • Wor Lass

I see the new sheep are the people who have Sky TV. Think I`ll extend my contract …

  • fistsofsteel2

Couldn’t understand why Rafa didn’t put a stronger team out…….resting players? There’s a two week ‘internationals’ break after the City game…….maybe Rafa had forgot?
Perez and Diame should have been on from the start against Forest – that would have led to a win.
    Get a grip, Rafa.
