Nottingham Forest 3 Newcastle United 1 – Instant United fan/writer reaction to Wednesday’s defeat

Nottingham Forest 3 Newcastle United 1  – Wednesday 29 August 7.45pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle losing the game in a dramatic finale, Rondon getting a 92nd minute equaliser, only for some shocking defending allowing a 3-1 victory for Forest.

With Manchester City up next, the season doesn’t get any easier…

Kevin Christie:

“Ugh. A pitiful display.

“Lacked any tempo or coherence – more like a drab pre-season friendly than a winnable game where squad players could stake a claim for a starting role. Fighting spirit sadly lacking too. Went out without a whimper.

“Sad to report an awful lot of negatives from a game that could’ve been a handy confidence-booster: Kenedy was woeful – leggy, lazy, lax, lathargic, at fault for two goals.

“Darlow inspired dread in the backline as usual and they pretty much all had an off-day with the possible exception of Sterry who did well in the first half but faded as the game went on.

“Atsu was his usual pointless self.

“Murphy again failed to grab the bull by the horns when given a chance to shine.

“Muto looked weak and way off the pace. Ki was slow in action and in thought. Longstaff didn’t make his mark on the game at all. Need I go on…?!

“One big plus though: a goal for Rondón. Hopefully the first of many!

“Away to City next. Another 5-4-1 damage limitation training exercise. Wake me up when Arsenal come to town!”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“All forward play seemed to be hugely unconvincing throughout.

“Not sure we deserved to even still be in the game come the 90th minute.

“Atsu and Muto were the only dangerous looking players in the first half but then were absolutely awful in the second.

“The referee obviously cost us with a disgraceful decision, but it was pretty disappointing throughout for me.

“Well done to all those that travelled. You deserved more than just the Rondon goal.”

Ben Cooper:

“As most of our new signings were on the pitch today, it looks like the £23million Forest spent in the summer was better spent than ours.

“A few of our players weren’t interested and a few more played very badly.

“The penalty we didn’t get should have got us through to penalties but individually and collectively we were poor from start to finish.

“Created little up front, let them play in midfield and got bullied at the back.

“Overall our second best performance of the season then.”

David Punton:

“Stoppage time madness at the City Ground.

“After a pretty abject display we get it back to 1-1, only to concede again and then denied a blatant penalty, before Forest go up the other end and make it 3-1.

“The lunacy of NUFC sometimes drives you mad.

“Rafa with seven changes to his starting line-up for a cup competition he pretty much admitted wasn’t a priority for our football club.

“The Ashley regime’s penny pinching is exposed on the pitch and that’s what we’re seeing.

“Yes, we’ve been unlucky here and there, but we’re also woefully short of quality and the squad depth is brittle.

“Not a happy night for our fans and some very tough tests lie ahead. Thanks Mike.”

Toon Bano:

“Where do you begin with that?

“Dreadful for 91 mins. Absolutely dreadful.

“Then Rondon shows what he is capable of and we think we got away with one.

“Then we turn into our true form and fold like a pack of cards almost immediately.

“Perez should have had a blatant penalty but knowing us we would have “done a Kenedy” and pi..ed it away anyway.

“This performance was disgraceful. The implosion was typical. The squad is terrible.

“This season is gonna be a long hard watch.

“Sick of it.

“Fans. You need to stop being sheep and boycott games starting now.

“This man Ashley has to go and if you continue to fill the stadium every week, despite not creating any atmosphere anyway, he will have NO reason to leave.

“Wake up and stop being so ignorantly selfish.”

Jamie Swan:

“Don’t feel like I want to waste me breath.

“90% garbage performance from a changed team.

“Ashley through penny pinching and neglect has got us to the point where frankly our first 11 is borderline good enough, so when we rotate and drop into the squad the writing was (and nearly always is) on the wall.

“Good finish by Rondon to take to extra time (you would effing think), then schoolboy defending on a cross for a Forest 2nd and gifted possession for a third ensured the brown and sticky icing on a shi..y cake. Darlow flapping harder than a humming bird on both didn’t help.

“Controversial non penalty on Perez? No surprise in being bumped by pathetic refereeing.

“Yes we were bad but we don’t need refs conkers deep in every team we play. Sick as. Can’t wait to play the UAE City Blues. NOT.”

Nat Seaton:

“Glad I decided not to travel down to watch that!

“Forget about the injury time excitement, you can sum up the game by the fact that we did not have one attempt on target against a Championship team within the 90 minutes.

“You’ve got to hope that things improve for Saturday…”

Jamie Smith:

“I didn’t watch it because I’ve had Sky taken out as they’re bast…s.

“Expected dross and it was worse than that.

“Can’t be bothered to be pi..ed off this time round.

“Confirmed tonight that NUFC will definitely never win a cup before I’m 40. Bit upsetting.”
