The draw for the second round of the League Cup has taken place on Thursday night.

Newcastle enter the competition at this stage, with the draw having taken place live on Sky Sports ahead of Sunderland’s first round tie against Sheffield Wednesday.

Newcastle United have drawn Nottingham Forest away from home.

A fair few connections with former striker Daryl Murphy at Forest now, whilst we will find out the exact status of Jack Colback’s ‘loan’ (he is on a year loan but his Newcastle contract runs out next summer anyway).

Last season Newcastle lost to Forest at the same stage, 3-2 in extra time with Aarons and Mitrovic getting the NUFC goals.

Former Newcastle (and Sunderland) player Chris Waddle and one-time Mackem manager Mick McCarthy were there to make the draw alongside David Prutton.

This second round draw sees the inclusion of the 13 Premier League clubs who are not competing in European competitions, plus recently relegated Stoke and Swansea.

The draw was unseeded but regionalised into North and South sections.

The remaining seven Premier League clubs will enter the competition in round three.

Newcastle were ball number 17 in the North section.

The second Round ties will place week beginning Monday 27 August.

If the NUFC game is drawn after 90 minutes, no extra time will be played and instead straight to a penalty shootout.
