Florian Lejeune has gone under the knife.
Newcastle United releasing an official statement on Wednesday afternoon that surgery had taken place.
They confirm that it was to repair a tear of his anterior cruciate ligament, after picking up the injury in training.
The club aren’t putting a timescale on the defender’s recovery but estimates in the media have suggested that it will be at least into 2019 by the time he returns, with also the chance he could miss the entire season.
Rafa Benitez says he spoke to Florian Lejeune both before and after surgery and the Frenchman is in good spirits.

Newcastle United can confirm Florian Lejeune has undergone successful knee surgery to repair a tear of his anterior cruciate ligament, which he sustained during training recently.
The club are not putting a timescale on his return to action at the moment.
Manager Rafa Benítez told nufc.co.uk:
“I was speaking with Florian before and after his operation.
“The doctor says it has gone well and he seems to be in good spirits.
“I join everybody at the club in wishing him a speedy recovery.”
