Some fans actually started to believe that things had got so bad and obvious, surely nobody now could have a go at Rafa Benitez, as he desperately attempts to stop this football club totally imploding at the hands of Mike Ashley.

However, it was only a matter of time before certain journalists crawled back out from under their stones and tried to argue black is white and have a go at the Newcastle manager, and by association, the fans.

Sure enough, Thursday has seen the first ridiculous attack on the United boss.

I’m guessing we will never know if this is solely the journalist’s own embarrassing work, or whether it is Ashley’s PR minion, Keith Bishop, who has put him up to it.

The bottom line is that the article is based on a premise that either the journalist knows is not true, or else he has doesn’t know and has been reckless enough to write it without bothering to check anything as insignificant as the actual facts.

The journalist in question is Andy Dunn at The Mirror.

His column (extracts below) sets out to ridicule Rafa Benitez for complaining that Mike Ashley isn’t properly supporting him in the transfer market, Dunn writing: ‘Rafa’s unhappy/on the brink/at end of tether/demanding action/at loggerheads with owner or anyone else in power…Yippee! That’s the sound of football kicking off again. The Benitez strop is becoming a traditional curtain-raiser to rival the Community Shield.’

Since he took over, when it comes to transfers in and out Rafa has shown a £40m profit in summer 2016, wasn’t allowed to buy anybody in January 2017, had a net spend of around £15m in summer 2017, then once again not allowed to buy anybody in January 2018.

This has been followed by Mike Ashley refusing to give him any transfer funds apart from SOME Of the sale prices of players he sells, at this point with only a week until deadline day Rafa is currently over £25m up on transfers in and out.

At the same time: Huddersfield, Brighton, Fulham, Wolves and Cardiff have all got net spends of tens of millions of pounds.

Andy Dunn declares ‘The repetitive strain of Rafa’s unsubtle railing against the lack of investment is becoming a little tiresome.’

What is the Newcastle manager supposed to do?

In the last three transfer windows he kept his thoughts to himself until a certain point and then simply told the truth, that Mike Ashley had made him promises on transfers that hadn’t been kept.

This time he has gone public a little earlier but only because the transfer window deadline is also over three weeks earlier than it was before.

It isn’t just Newcastle fans now, pretty much anybody with a brain, whether it is supporters of other clubs or those in the media, are accepting that Mike Ashley is, for whatever reason, undermining Rafa Benitez and enjoying it, just as the owner does with the Newcastle fans.

To back up why Rafa Benitez should shut up, Andy Dunn’s spark of genius is pointing out what Newcastle’s players are (supposedly) paid. The Mirror man stating ‘In terms of wages paid, even the Newcastle faithful would be hard-pressed to suggest Mike Ashley is not competitive.’

This is laughable, Rafa Benitez even said himself after last summer’s window, that he couldn’t even compete on transfer fees or wages with Huddersfield or Brighton when it came to new signings.

Andy Dunn reckons Newcastle’s players in the Championship season were paid on average £54,000 a week.

As a basis for this, he points to the 2016/17 NUFC accounts that were released in May this year, covering the year in the Championship.

Dunn declaring: ‘Newcastle United were getting promoted from the Championship but their £112million salary bill was one topped by only seven Premier League clubs. Since then, it is hardly likely to have dropped significantly.’

This is where he really falls down a hole, as I said above, he has either come up with this nonsense himself, or Keith Bishop has been feeding him his lines. Either way it is total rubbish. A bit like where when the accounts were released, Newcastle United tried to claim there had been a loss of over £90m in the Championship season,  when the reality was that this was almost entirely down to accountancy practises and the reality was that in terms of money in and out, the club was only £25m worse off – Ashley putting in £15m after he got NUFC relegated once again and the cash position at the bank going down another £10m.

If Andy Dunn had bothered to check, he would have seen that the following was also admitted by the club in the small print when the accounts were released…

The Mag – 18 May 2018:

Newcastle United official statement:

‘….the headline figure of £112.2m includes promotion bonuses and onerous contract provisions totalling just over £30m.’

So rather than the £112.2m wages supposedly paid to Newcastle players in the Championship season, we are already down to £80m. That then £80m wage bill is reduced further (in relation to players actually in Rafa’s Championship squad) by the fact that unwanted players Rafa inherited, such as Krul, de Jong, Saivet, Vuckic, Riviere and Thauvin all went out on loan with Newcastle paying out millions to help cover wages, further reducing what was actually paid to that 2016/17 set of players.

Andy Dunn wants to believe that Newcastle’s wage bill is likely to be at least  eighth highest in the Premier League now (based on his false reasoning about the 2016/17 wage bill and average pay.

It is laughable to suggest that Newcastle might have a bigger wage bill than the likes of the top six and others such as Everton, West Ham and Leicester, who think nothing of paying £20m or more for players (and their relevant wages).

That average of £54,000 per week that Andy Dunn talks of, I would be amazed if more than a handful of current Newcastle players will be on that much now. It is crazy to think that when most of Newcastle’s players have cost around £5m or less, that they will be on massive wages.

I think an apology to Rafa Benitez for the unjustified attack is due, as well as an apology to everybody who read it – having been subjected to such ill-informed lazy journalism that has been used as the basis to attack a well-respected manager and acts as an apologist for Mike Ashley.

Andy Dunn from The Mirror:

‘Rafa’s unhappy/on the brink/at end of tether/demanding action/at loggerheads with owner or anyone else in power…

Yippee! That’s the sound of football kicking off again.

The Benitez strop is becoming a traditional curtain-raiser to rival the Community Shield.

This year’s vintage came after he fielded a decent-looking team against Braga in a friendly, only to see them cuffed four-nothing.’

‘This from a squad that is already among the best-paid in the Premier League.

The last complete set of accounts for football clubs was for the 2016-17 season, when Newcastle United were getting promoted from the Championship but their £112million salary bill was one topped by only seven Premier League clubs.

Since then, it is hardly likely to have dropped significantly.’

‘The average player wage at St James’ Park during that Championship-winning season was £54,000 a week. In terms of wages paid, even the Newcastle faithful would be hard-pressed to suggest Mike Ashley is not competitive.’

‘Yet to the outside world, and even to the many of us who consider him a world-class coach, the repetitive strain of Rafa’s unsubtle railing against the lack of investment is becoming a little tiresome.

“You see the teams that have been promoted, the money they are spending. Put it all together and you understand why the fans need to be concerned,” he (Rafa) went on.

No.

Maybe Benitez wants Newcastle fans to be concerned. Because they don’t need to be concerned.’

  • Clarko

‘had a net spend of around £15m in summer 2017’

Incorrect, we had a net spend of €40.9m in the summer 2017 window.

    • glassjawsh-got-banned

      transfers in… 44.9 m pounds (Atsu 6.2/Lejeune 8.7/Murphy 12/Manquillo 4.5/Joselu 5/Merino 8.5)

      transfers out… 23.5 m pounds (Thauvin 9.5/Murphy 2/Gibson 6/de Jong 2/Mbabu .5/Hanley 3.5/Riviere f*ck all)

      wrong as always Clarknuts

      • glassjawsh-got-banned

But of course, when the truth is whatever you make up inside your own head, actual facts and research don’t matter. Bo, as ever, this is all p*ssing into the wind with you. You’d make a fine republican.

        • Clarko

Thauvin actually made his move permanent 3 games into his second loan spell at Marseille which would have been in August 2016 not July 2017.

Lewis Gibson’s transfer fee was €1.1m, not £6.0m.

          Official accounts:
‘Subsequent to the Statement of financial position date the company has committed to a further maximum net spent of approximately £46m (2016: net surplus of £40m) in respect to changes to the playing squad’

But of course, when the truth is whatever you make up inside your own head, actual facts and research don’t matter.

          • glassjawsh-got-banned

You’re actually right, I miscalculated. They both had the same clause in their loan agreement that triggered a permanent sale. The money for those things comes in following the end of the loan period. So Thauvin’s should count for summer 2017 and Merino’s for summer 2018. 36.4 m in/ 23.5 m out for summer 2017. Makes that 15m net spend figure sound generous. Oh and one more thing GET COMPLETELY FUKKED YOU WASTE OF SKIN.

          • Clarko

‘The money for those things comes in following the end of the loan period’.

No it doesn’t, when a clause is triggered, you pay, it’s not a pay whenever you can or feel like it clause. See the official statement from the accounts, we had a £46m net spend, we brought in three loans totalling ~£6m in January meaning in the summer our net spend was ~£40m:

‘Subsequent to the Statement of financial position date the company has committed to a further maximum net spent of approximately £46m (2016: net surplus of £40m) in respect to changes to the playing squad’

You’re the one ignoring actual facts and research, how embarrassing.

          • gordon

            You are so tedious

          • Clarko

What does that make @glassjawshgotbanned:disqus? Stupid and tedious?

I see you’ve given up on trying to argue, which is absolutley a good thing, so much for not replying though, that didn’t last long. Did I hurt your ego earlier? Is this what you’re going to do from now on? Just reply to my posts with “insults”?

          • gordon

Indeed it is. Got work in the morning (ever heard of that you inbred fickwit?) and came on here with the express intention of insulting you as I suspected you would STILL be on here and guess what – you are! And judging by reading the comments on today’s articles you have been since 8am! Howay man, even in your demented state you can’t believe that’s normal.Get some sleep man, obsession is unhealthy.

          • Clarko

No the the first comment I made today was at around 12:00pm, which makes you wrong, again. Do you want to know what the subject matter of that comment was? It was a comment about Newcastle, shocking right? How sad, someone making a comment about Newcastle on a website dedicated to Newcastle as opposed to what you do, which is spending your day on the site insulting people because you’re incapable of contributing to the conversation/discussion/argument.

            Side note:

‘and came on here with the express intention of insulting you as I suspected you would STILL be on here’

            ‘obsession is unhealthy’

          • gordon

This is so much fun! The only person I insult on here is you or that other tool clarko (probably one and the same anyway) – i’d insult that Monkseaton chap as well but he’s just a bit too mentally challenged – wouldn’t feel comfortable. Anyway, bedtime lots to do tomorrow (none of which involve posting on here – betcha I know what you’ll be doing tomorrow though!). And a quick comparison of the number of posts each of us has made on here should give you an understanding of the word obsession. Nighty night fickwit.

          • Wezza

They are two brothers mate who troll here under 50+ aliases. Clarko is Kevin Lee and looks like SGt bilko.

          • Mike Adam

You guys must know exactly how many aliases Kevin and David each have. So Clarko is Kevin Lee, which one is Ben Jones? Also, how do you know when they come on with a new one?

          • glassjawsh-got-banned

That’s not how it works you moron. A loan with obligation to buy triggers at the end of the loan. If you trust anything Mike Ashley (a proven liar) has put out about his financial accounts I have some seafront property in rural Indiana I’d like to sell you.

          • Ben Jones

It triggers once the conditions of the loan are met surely

          • Clarko

No, it triggers when the conditions are met, Newcastle exercised an option to turn the move into a permanent transfer with immediate effect in October 2017, Merino signed a five-year contract with Newcastle in October 2017 not July 2018.

Thauvin’s clause was triggered after he made three appearances for Marseille, which he did in August 2016, he became their player in August 2016. Below is a quote from Thauvin:

“It was a loan with an automatic purchase,” he said. “After three games I belonged to Marseille so it was almost a transfer.”

            Ignoring actual facts and research.

          • gordon

So let’s get this straight. I’m anti Ashley. I always agree with all anti Ashley posts on here. But because I made a joke about the paranoia on here then all of a sudden I’m a troll? I think the lot of you need to give your heads a shake.

          • Mrkgw

Problem with this shocker of a situation is that tensions are high. We shouldn’t wind each other up. But, baiting Moose isn’t doing yourself any favours.

          • paul mclaughlan

Baiting him? He was the one throwing insults around. As I’ve already said I don’t mind people using aliases. But once insults are being traded it’s time to show your real self and then maybe I’ll take him seriously.

          • Mrkgw

Best advice is to drop it. Seriously. Don’t know if things have been said before but looks like a case of crossed wires. Just let things go. Otherwise the regime win.

Nahhh. He’s done nothing wrong other than not buy sickeningly expensive players with sickening wages.

  • FatParosite

Dunn = Skiprat gob$hite in a paper that was the preferred partner and official NUFC lie tunnel.
Has Dunn done any research….?? I mean even the lowest of the low hack has at least 10 minutes looking on the internet.

This is a wistful bishop powered daydreamwank

    • Danimal

This Dunn chap I think is an Everton fan who filed one of the most embarrassing reports ever seen a few years ago when we had the cheek to escape from Goodison with a late equaliser and a point. They had two goals correctly ruled out and he used the lazy, incorrect line that they should have been 4-1 up, conveniently forgetting that if they get the first one the game takes a different course and they don’t necessarily get the other. Sour faced, hard-of-thinking cretin.

  • Colin Brumwell

You just have to look at his boss Maguire on GMB any mention of SD and zero hours and his rabid Labour views go on the back burner and silence prevails

  • Jimblag23

I’m not even willing to read whatever this idiot has written, the only thing I’ll say is if you’re demonising Rafa…you know zero about football.

    • Monkseaton Magpies

He needs to stop moaning and get on with his job which he is well paid for.

      • Tino11

Stop dodging my question, would you rather have your mate Pardew as manager or Rafa?

        • Jezza

Don’t waste your time on the troll, marra. He NEVER answers questions. Just block him.

          • Tino11

I don’t mind his obvious piss-take comments because nobody could actually believe what he posts, he’s a harmless stupid troll. I have blocked ‘Ben Jones’ because he’s not even half funny and I’m close to blocking 2 or 3 more.

          • Jezza

They are all the same person, marra. Ben Jones, Monkseaton Magpies, Clarko, ghostbuster, vodkamagpie, Martin Rooney etc, it’s all one person posting under multiple ID’s. He and his brother have got around 40 odd different ID’s between them.

          • Ben Jones

            ^’marra’

          • Mike Adam

Wezza says there are 50+ aliases for the brothers, so there are 10 or more you don’t even know about?

        • Monkseaton Magpies

While it’s great to have Rafa here he needs to get on with being positive and stop moaning or if he needs to moan do it to Charnley not us.

          • Tino11

That doesn’t answer the question Monk, you know it doesn’t. Rafa or Pardew?

      • TheFatController

You’re not paid for this nonsense but maybe stop moaning too?

      • drc74

u need to stop bumping into ashley in lifts, your drinking waaaaaayyyyy too muck of his spxnk these days

      • KRS1

        You sir are a c*nt!

      • Rafalution 14

You are absolutely right. If it was me earning 6 million a year, i couldnt care less. I would simply do my job, take a summer break, relax enjoy and come back.
The issue is the big man ( Rafa Benitez) cares about the club, his work and fans. This is the only reason he speaks out.
        Show some respect kiddo
I am not a newcastle united fan. Rafa Benitez was my reasearch subject during Masters. It is a pity that fans like you can never appreciate what he does

        • Monkseaton Magpies

He should conduct his business in private not to the press.
It is not good for team morale for him to come out with this lot are not good enough.

          • Rafalution 14

When did he say that, he said you need two competitive players in each position. He is not asking for much. Every penny generated right ???

      • Ram Kishore

U can answer the question Monk which Tino has asked. this summer the club has been even poorer in buying players than last summer..Slow on many levels
I will make a honest assessment and wait until the end of the window..
I don’t think Rafa has talked too much.. most of his interviews this summer has been honest and diplomatic.
Last season he criticised a lot but this summer he didn’t..

  • Mrkgw

Little more that we can say in terms of describing how bad things actually are at the moment. I was talking to some of the lads at work this morning (Chelsea & Spurs supporters) and they can’t get over the state of things at our club. I wonder whether if Rafa to sign that contract, whether anything would actually change. I doubt it though, it would be interesting to see. What a mess eh.

  • Monkseaton Magpies

The true wage bill was £85m which included bonuses. The rest was a true provision to off load players. The way Rafa has conducted himself the last week leaves a lot to be desired. When we got beat six one off Leyton Orient in a pre season friendly did Houghton spit the dummy out no he rallied the troops. By the way how are the empty seats for Spurs going when you predicted a boycott last week. It’s on the telly prices sky high and only four hundred single seats in the normal part of the ground left. You and Chris Holt should get a new job. Chris says he is packing in you to.

    • Polarboy

How else is supposed to act when inaction could result in us being relegated once again. If he keeps his mouth shut and Ashley doesn’t sanction anymore transfers in would you be happy with him then? Any pressure that can be applied to that fat c*nt is a good thing.

    • Ba ba.

      Guru guru

    • TheFatController

I’m glad you point out how Hughton was a great asset to the club and only going to become a better manager, not worse, given it was his first job and he’s got us promoted and the mid table before his loyalty and find performance we’re rearded with the sack.

And of course, he was replaced by the man who last season brilliantly kept Brighton up whilst hughton proved useless as West Brom… oh!

    • Tony English

You are rewriting history regarding caretaker Chris Houghton rallying the troops after that defeat, he later admitted himself that the senior pro’s rallied themselves and helped him run the team, Nolan, Barton, Smith, Harper.

The press stated after that game…

Chris Hughton, tried to ban his players from speaking after their humiliation in London – and then failed to apologise to the travelling fans.

Hughton claimed: ‘It has been a good pre-season so far. This is only a blip.’

Asked if he had a message for the fans, captain Alan Smith said: ‘We’ve been told not to speak.’

Meanwhile Steven Taylor responded to the same request with the words: ‘Nothing, mate.’

      Rally my ar se.

MONKSTER, MOCK A DOODLE DOO, FRESH FROM DRINKING ASHLEYS SPXNK AGAIN

    • Gallowgate Dave

You ready to admit Jezza was absolutely spot on about transfer activity this summer yet Monk?

Remember your £50-£60 million net spend prediction?

      • Wezza

That alias thinks it’s ok that we got 5 players but fails to mention that they are cheaper downgrades than what we have and forgetting his every penny lie.
Even the Manchester trolls can’t think of excuses for MA anymore.

        • Gallowgate Dave

The only upside to this sorry mess is seeing rabid Ashley apologists excuses unravel to a point where they look beyond parody. I just wonder if he’ll have the stones to put his hands up and finally admit he got it wrong.

      • Ram Kishore

Just few days dave, i think we would buy few more players.. just being realistic..
Journos of this want to sell and get a piece of web clicks for themselves..
But we should wait for sometime until the window.ends

        • Gallowgate Dave

I wish I shared your optimism Ram. Sometimes the negativity on here does border on paranoid but all to often it’s just realism. I thought Ashley would authorise a modest net spend, approx £20-£25 million, not enough to show Rafa ambition but enough to stifle some criticism. The only slim hope I have, and it may be wishful thinking, but he may be gambling on having a manager with the talent to keep us in the league, pay down some of the debt to himself and gear up to sell the club next summer. I’ve actually never bought that he was selling the club, not seriously anyway, even when he supposedly put us up for sale twice and I don’t say that with the benefit of hindsight, I said that at the time. But the sheer scale of the penny pinching this time despite the huge TV money could be a sign he may repay some of the loan to himself and therefore ask a more realistic price. Maybe but you know probably not, with Ashley anything is possible. It could just as easily be spite. It’s a gamble though as a lot of the other clubs around us have spent heavily.

          • Ram Kishore

I have the same thought in my mind. He’s getting some of the loans back. By bringing in few players of Rafa’s first choice or just enough bodies , the club could have avoided this unsettling thing happening at the club..

And the player’s lack of performance or effort yesterday caused further issues..
The players are being paid well. They need to put in some effort .
I really don’t think that bonus is the issue that made the players not talk..
It’s just bad reporting by chronicle for that incident..
It’s just the players are embarrassed..
But if the players didn’t talk because of the bonus issue,
Both the players and the club should ashamed for not
            solving it internally..
This place is becoming too much negative.

          • Gallowgate Dave

How did you end up supporting NUFC then Ram?

          • Ram Kishore

My older brother spent his post grad years at Newcastle university. He was there during Sir Bobby’s time at the club. That time at Tyneside made him a big fanatic of the club. He just passed it on to me while I was there for two summers. Took me to two pre season friendlies one in 2004 and other 2006. The Rangers match and the loss to psv.

            Then everything history

          • Gallowgate Dave

Haha I commend your loyalty then. We were born into misery, you actually chose it! I love our city and if we ever got it right (we almost did under KK and Bobby) I think the football club could soar if we unlocked the potential but more often than not supporting NUFC doesn’t bring a lot of joy, particularly under an absent owner like Ashley, so keep the faith Ram. Where are you from then?

          • Ram Kishore

I live in chennai( aka Madras), India. Back then when I visited Newcastle 2004, i was 12 at that time, we didn’t have much football in my city, never mind our country..
Finally ISL and U 17 world cup last year has brought back something for football ..
Reading Mag is a misery at times. Its Friday, i hope we sign few players .. it would be good to see the players whom we were linked to yesterday signing for us.
Nsoki, Myziane. Myziane looks really good in the videos

          • Gallowgate Dave

I’ve travelled a bit through India with my wife who has some Indian heritage (a grandparent), seen some great places, didn’t make it to Chennai. A country of India’s size would be a real force if footy really takes off there. Aye reading The Mag is miserable at times but the misery is just being realistic mostly. For me it’s as much about having a few beers with family and friends on match days as anything else as we’ll never achieve our potential under Ashley, he’s just not interested enough. Things will change eventually Ram, until then keep the faith.

      • BenMagpie

Didn’t Jezza say we wouldn’t buy anyone after Dubravka? I mean I’m no Monkseaton apologist, but fairs fair. Havent we signed Muto, Schar, Ki, and a triallist since then?

        • Danimal

That ‘A trialist’ used to score quite a lot of goals back in The Pink’s heyday. Maybe that’s the plan. Genius.

        • Gallowgate Dave

I expected a relatively modest net spend of approx 20-25 million, not enough to show Rafa that Ashley had too much ambition but enough to stifle criticism. The way I remember it Jezza said we’d sign frees and loans while Monk predicted a 50-60 million net spend. Personally I thought both would be wrong. Muto and Shar might have cost modest fees but they were fully funded (and then some) by player sales and I think our net spend is something like -22 million, the worst in the league. Unless the rest of the transfer window surprises us (I don’t think it will now) it’s worse than I imagined it would be and I think we can safely say Jezza’s prediction (even though it seemed unlikely) was reasonably accurate while Monk was way way way out. Arguing anything else would come across as a Monk apologist.

      • Monkseaton Magpies

Jezza said no signings we have five if you include the loan so he was miles out. Over 98% of the Mag said two signings or less. I said six signings but as Rafa has stalled on his contract t might have limited his funds.

        • Gallowgate Dave

How are you not a politician? Jezza said loans and freebies. If he’d included cheaper replacements he’d have been bang on. You on the other hand claimed £50-60 million NET spend. I’m looking forward to this £70-80 million spend in the next few days to take us to your prediction. When it happens feel free to call me out on it on here and unlike you I’ll have the stones to hold my hands up, apologise and admit I was wrong.

The Mirror is toilet paper hardly written by journalists.

  • Billmag

No the wonder the mirror group are in trouble financially with journos like him reporting utter 💩.

  • Ba ba.

I’m not a Ashley fan I hate the cnt and I think this article is utter garbage, but what we need right now is us the fans, the players and rafa to pull together it’s time for raf to carry out his magic again for one last hooray… . He needs to manage his socks off to organise and motivate what he’s got.. . We need to be ready for spurs and getting ready must start now, siege mentality don’t let the fatcnt beat you raf.. .. Hwtls ktf… Do your job and leave with your head held high.

    • Toonrobbybobson

Not sure I agree tbh. Im getting to the stage id rather we tumbled to get rid of the parasite and build the club back up on stronger foundations that his tat empire.

      Motivate what he’s got?
He’s got a squad full of internationals, no matter which way it’s dressed down.
All he has to do is stop blaming everyone else but him and stop moaning.

  • Down Under Mag

While the latest interview by Rafa clearly is a bit petulant, who can blame him for finally losing his calm cool demeanour. A part of me understands that Rafa does this sort of thing no matter where he is and how much he has to spend. But what annoys me is that if this were a club like Liverpool, Man Utd or even West Ham, the media would be all over it criticising the owner and telling him to fork out money, they would be villifying him not the the manager. But the national media simply slide in with the “delusional Geordie” routine and our local press are so in Ashleys back pocket they won’t speak out of turn about anything in case they are banned from the press conferences. Rafa needed to keep it out of the media BUT I totally understand why he finally got sick of things and let everyone know how frustrated he is. My guess is nothing will change and we will be looking at a stalemate until the end of the season when either Rafa or Ashley leaves, we get a new yes-man at the helm and Ashley dishes out all the money Rafa should have been given to the new man in charge just to prove a point…which will of course involve spending copious amounts on players who are flops and th eclub goes backwards once more.

    • Ben Jones

To be fair, although the signings in Mcclarens season didn’t work, we’re actually 5m UP on that 75m outlay already and still have Toney, Saivet and Shelvey on the books

    • Bowlsey

Well said! It’s so obvious that if this were happening at one of the ‘big boy’ clubs there would be a national outcry! If it was happening at Liverpool for example the news would be full of Scousers sobbing and signing fake death certificates with Ashley’s name on it, and the media would ask “How a great club can be allowed to be slowly destroyed like this? Won’t somebody do something?! Oh the humanity!” But no, it’s just Newcastle United and we’re all a bunch of whining deluded Geordies who don’t deserve any happiness or success apparently.

      • Bowlsey

Having said all that the Mirror is a f*****g rag and I can’t wait for all the tabloid papers in this country to go bust, but still, my point still stands regarding the ‘general media view’ of NUFC and it’s fans.

      • Ben Jones

The whinging deluded ones don’t deserve any happiness or success, it’s an inconvenience that it’s an unintended consequence of the rest of us having happiness and success

  • Leicester Mag

Chilling echoes of the approach in the US when facts become inconvient, attack. This club is no better than wackos like Steve Bannon. Swap Trump for Ashley and Fox news for the Mirror. As for the Mirror this once proud paper is a sick parody of its routes dancing to the warped message of Bishop and co. Fans need to trust their own eyes not crude untruths like this.

  • TheFatController

Surely can’t be Bishop? The last thing the regime need is poorly researched articles that unite and anger the fans just before the season starts.

By using the ‘massaged’ wage bill from 2017 accounts he’s left himself wide open for being discredited.

Maybe he really is just that bad at research? He always seems to love himself more than he loves his craft when he’s been on tv. I doubt he ever researches, just shoots from the hip, having contacts in the game no doubt from its less reputable elements

  • PiggyMalone

The journalist is right: Rafa Benitez is a serial whinger. He is divisive and his repeated complaints about transfer spending are boring but predictable. Benitez is a chequebook manager, he just wants to spend more and more of other people’s money on more and more players. And Rafa is sneaky enough to know that complains about lack of transfer activity will always get the fans on his side. It’s a very divisive tactic.

The problem is that Rafa is also a very good manager and he has not been given the support that was probably promised to him.

But Rafa only has himself to blame: firstly, he joined Newcastle United, a club owned by someone who has a proven history of not supporting the manager. And secondly, he whinged last season but still managed to get the club to 10th in the PL.

The lesson for Ashley: ignore Benitez and the moaning because the manager is good enough to prevent relegation.

Brilliant manager though he may be, he was not the right fit for NUFC, whilst it is owned by Ashley.

      • ghostrider

Whoever you think it is, the poster is fair to the point.

        • TheFatController

Yes, groperider, Ashley is an owner who doesn’t support his manager, well spotted that the poster has a point on that

          • ghostrider

the owner does support the manager on the managers needs.
He doesn’t do too well on supporting a managers wants.
Especially if that manager refuses to show commitment.

          • TheFatController

That’s where you look like you don’t have much sense in you

Rafa – happy to stay for ten years, puts his heart and soul into the job
Ashley – wants out, doesn’t turn up to anything, won’t put money in, bought the club only to further another business he had

And you’re on Ashley’s side and say Rafa is the one without commitment.

Even your confirmation bias for backing your ego must admit you look devoid of balance when you accuse Rafa of no commitment,

I suspect it’s because you, like Ashley, lack human empathy and are socially isolated.

          • ghostrider

You did say you would leave the psychoanalysis to the professional but maybe it’s their day off and you’re standing in. Is this correct?

Anyway, Rafa can say what he likes. Staying for 10 years. Anyone can come out with that garbage.
The issue is in what kind of steaks does he want on his plate for that stint?
Kobi beef no doubt and then it’ll turn out to be tough.
He’s a whinger. A whiner. Never satisfied with much and always putting down his own squad of players, letting them hear they’re not good enough.

New players just happen to turn into his second, third, fourth, fifth choices and yet we never ever see his first choice names.

This isn’t about Ashley and it isn’t about money spent or not, because we’re adding players (5 as it stands).
This is a frenzy built up entirely because of Rafas whining and certain fan’s massive adherence to him in some kind of messiah loyalty.

Certain fans have made Rafa bigger than the club and that is dangerous, because you’re turning the man into some kind of god because you hate Ashley.

Rafa does not run the club, Ashley does.
            People need to remember that.

Granted rafa is very vocal in the press, but if he felt he’d been treated fairly, he’d hardly be there manufacturing a reason to whinge. Is he expected to just accept the situation like some kind of gagged g imp? Also, if you had passion for a project in which you saw great potential and saw it perpetually stifled, you would, no doubt, speak up. If he’s getting no joy from the three stooges above him, where can he turn? Ashley and his nine inch Sondico branded strap on, and a highly respected football mind should just double over? He’s already got the fans onside.

    • TheFatController

Let’s not get bogged down in the small stuff like manager minor issues, the owner has lost the fans, and when that happens relegation is certain.

Ashley needs to fire sale the club now, because it’s getting relegated and won’t get back third time. Before Ashley becomes the next Ellis Short or tony xia, my advice would be – ‘take £300m now or £100m in 18 months’

If anyone can tell me how we won’t now, with players and fans lost unlike last season, get relegated I’m all ears ?

  • Leazes.

Virtually a carbon copy of a story that the Mirror ran on behalf of Ashley one year ago attacking Benitez.

Con us once Ashley, shame on you.Con us twice shame on us.How many times will Rafa and the fans believe what Ashley tells us only to be let down again?
Every close season it’s the same,Ashley makes promises,we (some) believe what he says, then he reneges.
Some people say go to SJP and get behind the team, blah, blah, blah. Yeah that’s great. As long as they continue getting their “football fix” as usual,it does’nt matter what’s going on behind the scenes and that the club’s in danger of self imploding,

Keep on going and Ashley will be here for years !!!!

In 2015 the same journalist Andy Dunn at The Mirror wrote….

‘Newcastle United are Rotten to the Core under Mike Ashley – they must shame him into selling’……

What a difference becoming Official Media Partner makes!

It appears, Andy Dunn would sell his soul, to the highest bidder.

      • FatParosite

Or even someone who has a half eaten Keegan Burger.

  • Shipcote Willy

Some fans might swallow this garbage but I believe the majority can see with their own eyes. Rafa is one man against the PR of Ashley and all his sycophants but fans are behind him. Ashley continues to run the club down and is being assisted in this by tame journalists. They will already have their articles written for when Rafa leaves.

  • Elsa

Won’t be long before the ‘deluded Geordies’ tag gets wheeled out again then…

  • FatParosite

Dunn fails to mention Benitez turning down 2 contracts in a bid to show that this is an annual trait of Rafa rather than a dignified power move. This has Bishop spin mixed with Liverpoop bias.

  • Peter C

This has the appearance, of the hand of Keith Bishop & Associates Limited.

Andy Dunn should turn in his NUJ Card, as he is no journalist, or a poor excuse for one.

    • FatParosite

Comparable to any that are at the Comical….

    • Tweed Mag

Absolutely. Bishop is doing a job for his paymaster and manipulating second rate ‘journalists’. Ignore them.

The simple solution is not to buy the Mirror, or the Sun. Do not subscribe to Sky and keep out of SD shops. No amount of PR spin can explain poor sales. I have a feeling Ashley’s minions enjoy trying to wind us all up, but the tactic has now worn paper thin. It is the same with the so called trolls – don’t give them the satisfaction of a reply.

    • GlasgowMag

The mirror used to be a good paper have they now got a connection to Murdoch & sky?

      • MadMag83

Was that when they printed on actual toilet paper? Always been a poor echo of The Sun, and that’s saying something.

  • MadMag83

It’s okay, nobody reads The Mirror anyway! Obviously just another journalist in the Adrian Durham mould, always take the opposite opinion just to be try and generate debate. It must be a sad life they lead, deliberately making yourself look a moron.

Just ignore him. All he is trying to do is to get attention for himself as no-one is listening to him or reacting to his tweets or reading his column. If you ignore him, he will try and wind up another set of fans nd get some some attention from them. It’s no better than the rubbish that gets said on Talk Radio in a desperate attempt to try and get someone to telephone the presenter. If Andy wants to know what is going on at Newcastle I suggest he speaks to George Caulkin of The Times.
