Match of The Day commentator notes ahead of Cardiff v Newcastle and killer facts
Ahead of the game this lunchtime, Match of The Day commentator Steve Bower has been analysing the Cardiff v Newcastle match.
Like many other pundits, he sees it as a crucial match for both sides, despite it coming only a week into the season.
For Newcastle, he says ‘Victory would inject some much-needed positivity into the Tyneside air.’ Which would indeed be a massive help with Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal up next.
As for Cardiff, the MOTD commentator says they will be massively reliant on their home form, if they are to survive this time.
As he points out , they won just five home matches in 2013/14, ending the season rock bottom of the Premier League with 30 points and only seven wins in total.
Last season’s promotion was also built on home form, 52 of the 90 points won in Cardiff.
In 2018 they have so far had 10 home games and won eight, only losing to champions Wolves and then drawing the meaningless final game of the season against Reading.
Ten is also a magic number for Newcastle, incredibly the Magpies have won their last 10 league games against Cardiff, winning 2-0 away and 2-1 at home in the 2016/17 Championship season, as well as 3-0 at home and 2-1 away in the 2013/14 Premier League campaign.
All eyes on Rafa’s team selection, making it 11 victories over Cardiff in a row, would be the perfect lift for everybody in what looks a tough season ahead.
Match of The Day commentator’s notes:
“Whatever the outcome this season, Cardiff City are going to try to enjoy the Premier League ride.
“They will certainly savour their first home game back in the top flight, a prospect which looked fairly unlikely for most for most of the last four years.
“They will be determined to win too.
“If they are to maintain last season’s theme of defying the odds then they need results at home. Their last stay yielded only five victories at the Cardiff City Stadium.
“Equally, Newcastle will see this as an opportunity to get off the mark as they look for an 11th consecutive league win over their opponents.
“Victory would inject some much-needed positivity into the Tyneside air.”
Newcastle’s 10 consecutive league wins against Cardiff is their best such run against any opponent.
Cardiff’s last league victory in this fixture came at home in the Second Division in 1981, while their last top flight win against the Magpies was in 1961.
Cardiff have won eight of their 10 home games (D1, L1) in 2018.
Neil Warnock is winless in nine matches against Newcastle, drawing two games and losing seven, since a 1-0 win as Sheffield United boss in November 2006.
Newcastle have lost five of their last six Premier League fixtures.
They could lose four consecutive away games in the Premier League for the first time under Rafael Benitez.
Benitez is undefeated against Neil Warnock in all five previous managerial meetings, winning the last four.
Joselu could become the first player to score in Newcastle’s opening two Premier League matches since Alan Shearer in 2003.
