John Motson launched his career on the back of a Newcastle United disaster, now he is predicting another
John Motson has made his predictions for this Premier League season.
The veteran commentator picking out who he thinks will do well, alongside those who he reckons will head the other way.
At the top end he has gone for Liverpool to upset the odds and pip Man City for the title.
He also tips both Man Utd and Tottenham to miss out on the top four but Spurs to have the small consolation of winning both cups.
As for down the bottom…
John Motson predicts Cardiff to fail through lack of quality and Huddersfield to suffer from ‘second season syndrome.’
As for the third spot, he thinks: ‘The relationship between boss Rafa Benitez and owner Mike Ashley could condemn Newcastle.’
Personally, I think Cardiff look all but certain to end up relegated.
However, just like last season I think you have another 10 or more clubs, including Newcastle, that could fill the other two spots.
I find it amusing that so many are automatically picking Huddersfield.
A year ago it was pretty unanimous that they would go straight back down, yet never ever looked in any real trouble. Another £30m net spend this summer makes it a total net spend of more than £75m since Huddersfield got promoted, including paying out £18m on a new club record signing.
Money doesn’t guarantee success but they are having a real go at establishing themselves in the top flight. If only Mike Ashley would match Huddersfield’s ambition…Newcastle incredibly having made a profit on transfers since promotion.
John Motson making his predictions speaking to The Sun:
TOP 4
1 Liverpool
2 Manchester City
3 Arsenal
4 Chelsea
GOING DOWN
Newcastle, Huddersfield, Cardiff
FA CUP
Tottenham
EFL CUP
Tottenham
“You will be asking where Spurs and Manchester United are in the top four. I fear Spurs’ failure to make any signings may cost them. And they are moving into a new stadium which always takes a bit of getting used to.
“While I am concerned about the negativity coming out of Old Trafford. But I believe Tottenham will settle in their new home in time to complete a domestic cup double.
“At the bottom, I feel Cardiff will just not have enough quality to match their spirit. But that is not underestimating the job Neil Warnock has done there.
“Huddersfield will suffer from second season syndrome.
“And I feel the relationship between boss Rafa Benitez and owner Mike Ashley could condemn Newcastle.”
