John Motson has made his predictions for this Premier League season.

The veteran commentator picking out who he thinks will do well, alongside those who he reckons will head the other way.

At the top end he has gone for Liverpool to upset the odds and pip Man City for the title.

He also tips both Man Utd and Tottenham to miss out on the top four but Spurs to have the small consolation of winning both cups.

As for down the bottom…

John Motson predicts Cardiff to fail through lack of quality and Huddersfield to suffer from ‘second season syndrome.’

As for the third spot, he thinks: ‘The relationship between boss Rafa Benitez and owner Mike Ashley could condemn Newcastle.’

Personally, I think Cardiff look all but certain to end up relegated.

However, just like last season I think you have another 10 or more clubs, including Newcastle, that could fill the other two spots.

I find it amusing that so many are automatically picking Huddersfield.

A year ago it was pretty unanimous that they would go straight back down, yet never ever looked in any real trouble. Another £30m net spend this summer makes it a total net spend of more than £75m since Huddersfield got promoted, including paying out £18m on a new club record signing.

Money doesn’t guarantee success but they are having a real go at establishing themselves in the top flight. If only Mike Ashley would match Huddersfield’s ambition…Newcastle incredibly having made a profit on transfers since promotion.

John Motson making his predictions speaking to The Sun:

TOP 4

1 Liverpool

2 Manchester City

3 Arsenal

4 Chelsea

GOING DOWN

Newcastle, Huddersfield, Cardiff

FA CUP

Tottenham

EFL CUP

Tottenham

“You will be asking where Spurs and Manchester United are in the top four. I fear Spurs’ failure to make any signings may cost them. And they are moving into a new stadium which always takes a bit of getting used to.

“While I am concerned about the negativity coming out of Old Trafford. But I believe Tottenham will settle in their new home in time to complete a domestic cup double.

“At the bottom, I feel Cardiff will just not have enough quality to match their spirit. But that is not underestimating the job Neil Warnock has done there.

“Huddersfield will suffer from second season syndrome.

“And I feel the relationship between boss Rafa Benitez and owner Mike Ashley could condemn Newcastle.”

  • ghostrider

We won’t be anywhere near relegation.
If rafa sets the team up more balanced this season than last then there’s no reason why we can’t finish inside the top 10.

    • Your mum

More quality in depth this season without a doubt.

      • Kenny

name players that can replace Shelvey, Lascelles, Dummett, Kenedy, Ritchie.

        • Your mum

We have cover for all positions, they may not be as good as the first choice, but if they were then they would be the first choice, that is the same for any team except maybe man city.

          • Kenny

name them then., you can`t because we have no adequate cover for any of those players, you really do talk a load of krap 💩

          • Your mum

Kenneth i have proven you wrong numerous times with facts. So for defenders, we have Fernandez, Lejeune when he’s fit, Schar, Sterry etc
            Ritchie, Atsu, Murphy, Aarons.,
            Shelvey, Hayden, Ki etc

Yes they might be as good as our first choice, but what mid table premier league team has a bench as strong as their first team?

          • Kenny

told you your post was 💩

          • Your mum

But it’s not though Kenneth, it’s an answer to your response. If we had a better player for each position youd be moaning that Shelvey etc weren’t good enough. Forum Skidmark.

          • Ron

What position does Forum Skidmark play?

          • Ram Kishore

Maybe he’s right ken.. just tell me which team has its bench as strong as the first team..
Even the special Jose will cry if he doesn’t have Pogba..
We can criticise Ashley as much as we want..
Now the Window is done and let’s back the team and enjoy the weekends..
It’s is the time to stop writing off the team and players and enjoy the game time..

We can be like Leazes during the transfer window to expect good signings..
this window was ok imho..The signing seem ok. They didn’t excite me and neither did they make me worry. This is only view of the window .

Let’s be like a Monkseaton once the season starts.(That don’t include supporting Ashley but being buzzed for the match day)
            Cheers

          • panther

Technically we have cover, as in a teenager from the reserves, and have that position mercilessly exploited by the opposition

      • Kenny

        where`s the answer ???

    • SuperDesHamilton

Benitez to blame again. Benitez co ordinated that terrorist arrack this morning too?

      • Kenny

and he sold the next Alan Shearer

        • SuperDesHamilton

Might as well blame him for shearers injuries while were at it as well

      • ghostrider

        Blame for what?
If he sets up for us to play then there’s no blame in essence.
The only blame I have on him at the moment is for whining whilst not committing to the club.
If he just gets on with the job from now on, now that he knows what he’s working with, then I’m right behind him.

        • SuperDesHamilton

He’s not committing because he’s leaving. That’s a fact, he’s told the training staff

          • ghostrider

And one of the training staff has told you, right?
Because according to Fernandez, Rafa wants to stay and is focused.

Only Rafa and Ashley and maybe Charnley will know what the potentials are.

          • SuperDesHamilton

            Correct. I knew about
The Spain approach weeks before it came out. Same as the staff have to pay for their uniform they aren’t allowed to take it home because Ashley is so tight

          • ghostrider

Are you talking about Newcastle or something else?

          • SuperDesHamilton

Newcastle. I’m on about in regards to the Spain national team approaching Benitez & things that go on at the training ground. You’re trying to be clever though

          • ghostrider

You’ve just totally changed the entire thing. lol
Just leave it at that man. lol

          • SuperDesHamilton

I said I knew Benitez was leaving you asked how, I told you that’s what happened you’ve obviously lost your train of thought

          • ghostrider

You’ve got yourself mixed up in between a few conversations between us.

      • Ron

Really – wasn’t it in London?

        • SuperDesHamilton

A dunno ghost blames him for everything else

  • Kenny

without Rafa i`d agree with him but when he leaves next year Newcastle will go down as fast as the Titanic

  • Peaky

Senile old basterd……worst commentator ever……someone should also have told him years ago he looked fuckingstupid in that sheepskin coat…..

    • Kenny

he`s haunted me since i was a bairn, him & f##king Rolf Harris

      • Megatron1505

        You f##ked Rolf Harris?

        • Kenny

i`d like to with a crowbar

      • panther

Tell me more about rolfy baby

        • Kenny

i went for a good drink when they banged that nonce up
the should have sent the scummy back to Oz

          • panther

My grandma knew Gary glitters guitarist, got me to meet glitter backstage, was a creepy dude even then

    • Peter C

I’ll probably get slaughtered for this, but I always thought he was overrated, not a patch on the late, great Kenneth Wolstenholme. (Giving my age away, just a little)

Nowadays, I find nearly all football commentators irritating, as they all have the nauseating habit, of stating the patently obvious.

So in my humble opinion, they’re mostly irrelevant and redundant.

Best to mute the sound, or turn it right down.

      • Peaky

        100 % agree….

      • Kneebotherm8

        I prefer the Asian TV broadcasts/commentary………….can’t understand a fckn word they’re saying……..

      • Kenny

they come out with more 💩than the trolls

      • Jimblag23

They’re all desperate for their soundbite, their very own they think it’s all over. It’s so contrived.
Motty does P me off, doddery git.

        • Peaky

He’s someone you would avoid like the plague at a wedding……laughing at his own krap jokes whilst boring everyone shitless…

      • Ron

When you mute it you think you’re at Sunland so doesn’t work for me.

    • Philippines

I suspect you are not old enough (or mature enough) to have known all the commentators who you could compare him with.

      • Peaky

        Wrong on both counts……

        • Kenny

he musn`t know you`re 98 and leazes younger cousin

        • Leazes.

          Thats a troll

    • Ron

The heat got to him this summer and it went to his head, so he wrote this. You’re right should have taken the sheepskin off. (Or at least removed the sheep)

  • Cushty lad

On a different note I see a report on BBC says that over half of prem league could play to empty stadiums and still make a profit. Shoots down the theory of fans not going to games to get rid of the fat lad. The only way to get footy back to somewhere approaching normality. Scrap your sky and bt.sports subscriptions. I stopped going to st James years ago and chucked both sky and bt couple year back. Beer token money now.

    • Your mum

I’ve said this all along, clubs no longer need the local fans, it’s all about the bigger fan base nowadays.

    • Kenny

if you think an empty stadium every time Newcastle are on tv wouldn`t have an effect then you`re mental

      • Cushty lad

Do you have sky and bt sports Kenny?

        • Ashley-out

i can smell a troll a mile of & you mate stink 💩

          • Cushty lad

I’m no Ashley fan mate. Don’t go to games for that reason.

          • Leazes.

            Bingo

          • Cushty lad

Yep stick to bingo, u know nowt about footy

      • Kneebotherm8

It would be a terrible image for his 💩Direct brand worldwide……Ashley would 💩 himself if the stadium were half full on a regular basis…..

        • Kenny

bang on it would, you may notice the guy who posted is new
another vermin troll at a guess, they`re out today supporting King Rat

          • Kneebotherm8

Aaah just canna see how they canna see what he’s doing/done/is gonna carry on doing to this football club………Sports Direct United in all but name……

    • Clarko

-Newcastle made £126m from the Premier League in 17/18,

-Newcastle made £28m from commercial and other income in 15/16

-Newcastle made £25m from matchday revenue in 15/16

-Newcastle’s wage bill was £80m for the 16/17 season

We would absolutley still make a profit.

      • Ashley-out

        Genius

        • Clarko

That is the most sensible thing I’ve seen anyone comment on this site.

          • Kenny

            including yourself

          • Ron

            Genius

      • Your mum

wages were £112m in 16/17 season. 130% of turn over, you are comparing 2 different years though which is pointless as we were in different leagues with different outgoings.

        • Clarko

That £112.2m wage bill includes promotion bonuses (£9.9m) and onerous contract provisions (£22.0m) that total £31.9m, meaning the wages and salaries cost a total of £80.3m for the year. Not £112.2m.

I used the Premier League money from the most recent season because that is the most recent number we have, I used the wage bill from the 16/17 season because that is the most recent number we have (and quite clearly a Premier League wage bill), I used the most recent figures we have of Premier League matchday and commercial revenue. The numbers I used were fine.

        • Ron

Maybe he excluded MA’s wages £32m difference – about right

      • Ron

Could shut the ticket office as well, then LC will be out of a job, he’s the one on the refund counter. I suppose he should have always been out of a job – no justice.

        • Clarko

Do you think you could do better than Lee Charnley? You’re really going to try and give the guy stick? Do you not think he did a good job brining Benitez in? You don’t think he did a good job bringing in Kenedy, Dubravka, Sung-yueng, Muto, Schar, Rondon and Fernandez with less than nothing? Give the guy a break, he’s not the one stopping Benitez doing his job or stopping the promised investment in the squad.

          • Ron

Not my field, but if it was I’d have been sacked a long time ago. I give him stick cos he’s MA’s whipping boy. That’s why you don’t hear him speak – can’t remember the script.

          • Clarko

            You’re just being silly.

          • Ron

            it’s late I’m entitled

    • Ron

Sunland tried that – playing in empty stadiums and look where it got them.

      Good idea that was.

      • Hebburn

Rid of a bad owner….isn`t that what you want ? But it comes at a price!!!

      • Jonas

that wasn’t so much a protest as it was s**t support
there always empty seats there unless they’re playing us, its rightly just taken for granted

  • SuperDesHamilton

Huddersfield are down, after what the manager said post match on Saturday they’ve gotta be nailed on the nihilistic yellow toothed creep

  • Cushty lad

    I never said that

  • panther

    So do we motty

  • Cushty lad

Kenny, why have you blocked me? You obviously have sky & bt sport and are therefore part of the overall problem.

Opinions on Newcastle Utd are like a*seholes; everybody has one, and most of them stink.

  • Paul Cannell

I see Ricky George got 2 years in prison. Only Ronnie Ratford and Motson left and we can all move on from that Hereford game hahaha

    • Kenny

      what for

      • Paul Cannell

        He got caught

      • Peaky

Sold someone’s house without their knowledge then pocketed the proceedings….fool.

    ah, tea time. i`m off

    • Cushty lad

I smell a nonce. I’am sure i banged u up on 2b in durham a few yr back…..yeah kenny, big gob no substance!

  • gallowgate26

Well he’s certainly entitled to his opinion and knows what he’s talking about. Most people tip Liverpool to fall at the wayside (Man City). Good for him though he’s not sitting on the fence is he? As for the toon finishing 18th, totally plausible. They could hardly have shown less ambition and could easily have gone down last season with any of the bottom 10.

  • HarryHype59

I think some of us are guilty of “shooting the messenger” regarding Motty’ ‘s prediction. Fatso has rolled the dice on our EPL survival once again in his never ending pursuit of short term profit and cost cutting. Relegation this season is a real possibility.

  • Monkseaton Magpies

His best mate got sent down today for two years so looks like plenty of prison visits for Motty.

  • Billmag

Whilst we have Rafa I don’t think we’ll go down because he gets the best out of players wether it’s enough time will tell, as with other teams injuries play’s a big part in where they finnish.

  • Jate Legend

John Moston, that f*cker. No news today.

  • Jonas

One of those situations where I’m glad its not just me –
he’s been abysmal for years, should have been put out to pasture long ago and hawking that coat around endlessly to be cute and a character was old, pathetic and extremely sad in the 90s and he’s still doing it now.
Far prefer Barry Davies, his commentaries are a treat to listen to now when I watch old football, poetry, at times, most recent one that stands out is “he sent about three letters with that pass and every one was answered by the defender”

He narrated and edited MotD race for the title series – in the 93/94 version, where we finished 3rd and score the most goals, it doesn’t show us win one game.
I already had my suspicions listening to him get his panties in a bunch when Claridge was saying Remy was wrong to go to QPR over us.

  • DeadToiler

I could never stand John Motson. He’s a sniffling little sh!t. So pleased he’s retiring. I really couldn’t care less what he or any other expert predicts. I don’t think we’ll go down . The squad is stronger than last season, though not as much as I’d have liked to be. I hate Ashley and wish he would [email protected] off but we’re stuck with him so the best policy is to ignore him.
