Gary Lineker set to be on our screens later tonight, presenting Saturday night’s Match of The Day.

Cardiff against Newcastle was the early game and along with pretty much everybody else who watched it, the BBC presenter was less than impressed.

In all honesty a game that had all the hallmarks of being  a Championship game in everything but name.

The main tactic from both teams seeing the ball sent forward aimlessly in the hope of something magically happening.

Cardiff managed one shot on target, whilst Newcastle had six, although difficult to remember NUFC getting into the opposition half that many times with any purpose.

No wonder Gary Lineker declared after watching it ‘We’re screwed’ if that dismal effort ends up top of the Match of The Day running order tonight.

The saving grace for Lineker and friends is that the referee and players at least gave some talking points when it came to red cards that were given and not given, along with a number of dubious decisions by the officials.

Not a great advert for buying a Sky Sports subscription and it will be amazing if another match today manages to come after Newcastle’s in the MOTD running order.

However, it would be a miracle/disaster if that proves the case.

The choice of games (with also Chelsea v Arsenal to come in the teatime kick-off) being:

Cardiff 0 Newcastle 0

Everton 2 Southampton 1

Leicester 2 Wolves 0

Tottenham 3 Fulham 1

West Ham 1 Bournemouth 2

Gary Lineker:

“Well if Cardiff v Newcastle is top of the running order on Match of The Day tonight, we’re screwed.”

Stats from BBC Sport:

Monkseaton is a vicar, at the church of Ashley

        • kingfisher

I’m fine Peaky. The Spanish City is looking great now although there are lots of complaints about the parking charges and the price of the food. How’s things at your end ?

          • Kenny

            you live at the coast

          • Peaky

Not bad….settling in to new house now…..I’m still in Peak District but closer to Sheffield as opposed to Stoke….nice around here and Sheffield is a massive improvement on Stoke…

  • Geordiegiants

We were shambolic today. We look like relegation certainties.

    • Peaky

Are yee already Geordie lad…..nee swearing….😂🤣😂

      • Geordiegiants

Got to try and get as many as possible in before they cotton on.

        • Kenny

          Mitrovich scored 😃😂😁😃😄😀

          • Geordiegiants

😂🤣😂🤣. I don’t think it’s just our forward line this season and let’s be honest he is only just catching up to The Hoss!

          • Kenny

looked like a pub team today, bells are ringing already

          • Geordiegiants

It’s the first time under Rafas reign I haven’t had full confidence.
We are lacking in confidence all over the park. Dubravka looked poor last week, Kenedy was shocking today it’s going to be a bottom half season again no doubt about it.

          • Kenny

Rafa`s leaving, the players have had a run in with Ashley and they know the squad is weak, Rafa inspired them last season he may not be able to do it this

          • Geordiegiants

That’s about the size of it!

          • StevieB

Totally agree, we stayed up last season due to intense work rate and organisation, and through hanging in on games that historically we would lose , but they seem to have lost that zip now , it’s almost as if they’ve accepted it’s a losing battle with the owner on recruiting, they even had the personal run in with him in the summer over bonuses, And they’re listening to the daily circus fight in the media between Rafa and Ashley and they all just looked sick today , they’ll also be aware Rafa is in his last year and is very unlikely gonna be with them next year and it looks like it’s all just caught up with them which led to today’s disaster .im gutted

          • Ram Kishore

You are right… Bad pre season is catching up as exactly i had expected .. constant rumblings in the media about Rafa , Ashley is gonna make it even more harder in the coming weeks

    • ToonTom

Is it just me or do we get to enjoy our football more in the Championship because we’re not fretting constantly that poor results and stupid penalty misses could be the difference between staying up and going down? I’m starting to look forward to next season already.

      • Geordiegiants

Ha ha ha ha, 😂🤣😂🤣😂funny if it wasn’t so serious? He gets us relegated to keep the heat off with a promotion.

  • Lord

Plenty of poor games away from home last year but all anyone remembers is we stayed up and came 10th.

    • Kenny

we kicked on in the New Year & other teams faltered, that team today looked like they didn’t want to be there.

      • Ram Kishore

        He has a point ken

  • HarryHype59

I cannot stand the sanctimonious crisp eating, auto cue reading luvvie However, it isn’t hard to agree that this match was a woeful advert for the EPL.

    • SuperDesHamilton

His brother is a proper weirdo

    • Sickandtired

Someone at Sky might start asking ‘Mike’ why he refuses to spend their money!

  • Paul Cannell

Lots of bed wetters all over the net. It’s only the second game !

    • Ashley-out

it was the performance rather than the result.

    • Mrkgw

Yes, granted it was only the second game but this makes thinks even more worrying. No desire to win, we were tactically awful and spoilt the game, we have no cutting edge, Rafa can’t select the right side. No investment, a disinterested owner and supporter unrest. What more could be wrong?

    • Duh

maybe today was just a bad day at the office, it happens.

Kennedy had a game to forget.

One positive is clean sheet and down to 10 men with a makeshift right back.

      • ToonTom

As I sad above, because it was Cardiff.

    • StevieB

Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City up next …..that will likely be 1 point from 15 to start what always appeared a difficult season . Not great is it ??

    • Sickandtired

Give owa, they were 24 carat [email protected]

  • Mrkgw

That’s how far we have fallen under this regime of owner, chairman and, dare I say it, even Manager. Because, today, Rafa played his part in a dismally poor game of football. I don’t think that anyone in their right mind could applaud that. It was quite frankly, awful.

  • Michael

Two baldies fighting over a comb

  • Stephen

    I couldn’t find a single positive
All this stems from the top
Honestly this will be a championship fixture next season.

    • Duh

Clean sheet despite being down to 10 men and 2 makeshift rightbacks to boot?

      • ToonTom

Because it was Cardiff. I don’t think we’re playing them every week, though?

      • StevieB

I hear you but they will be rock bottom this year Cardiff…at least they have an excuse at being poor, we’ve had 4 transfer windows to bring us to be where we all expect

      • Stephen

        Oh I forgot
        Kenedy made one decent pass
        To the opposition goalie

        • Kenny

          He is a troll

  • Paul Patterson

I normally say ‘Never knock an away point’ but this is clearly two dropped..

    • Ashley-out

Kenedy should never have taken that pen

      • Ram Kishore

He was the designated, we can’t do much about it .It was one of those very bad days but for the performance yesterday we probably deserved no more than a point.

    • Duh

      Feels like a loss.

  • Marty had

Why does he keep picking Josleu ?? He couldn’t score with his mum. Ok I know he did last week but it brushed off his eye brow on the way in. Rafa not picking his new signings is v odd

    • Duh

Always takes his time to integrate new players into the team. Rondon will be starting soon I am sure.

      • Martin Rooney

But why leave a guy who should have been sent off, was having a mare and take off someone who was trying whenever his team mates passed to him????

        • Martin Rooney

I think it is clear that the reason Matt Ritchie was linked with other clubs is that Rafa wanted him sold

        • Ram Kishore

U meant subbing Ritchie and bringing on Murphy i think that was most probable one at that situation.. Lost both the Right footed players and subbed perez .. there was one player who’s right footed needed on that side for defensive and crosses..
Murphy was the right sub imo

    • Martin Rooney

Mike Ashley makes him do it, thats why he sacked his agent as he put it in the contract that the team would be picked by the devil

    • Desree

      They are not Raffas signings.

    • SH.ER

      Because he’s Spanish …

    • Mike Adam

      Fantastic question!!!

  • GlasgowMag

Here’s one for the pundits/journalists. What happens over 12 years of under investment selling your better players and replacing them with players half their value/relegated loan players, guess what sometimes you get performances like today!!! If you want to do your job why don’t you tell the world the real reason for our demise fatboy and his merry crew go on I dare you!!!

    • Martin Rooney

considering the two years prior to Ashley and us currently being in a higher finishing position to then, how do we
      1. Qualify your assessment ?
      2. Quantify your assessment?

      • BanJones

Martin you are a sad sad complicit person of the lowest quality, I hope Mike let’s you sit in the comfy chair every now and then?

        • Martin Rooney

Me mam telt iz never sit in a cockney man’s comfy chair

  • StevieB

It’s crazy the amount of people trying to put a positive spin on today , it was an absolute disaster from the team sheet through to the Shan pen effort at the end . Bournemouth win away, wolves looked good again, Fulham look good and have good quality, and these are supposed to be our bottom six rivals .
I’m ten times more worried now then what I was in November last year

  • StevieB

I can’t actually recall three maybe even two passes that were completed in a row today either

    • SH.ER

I know right? that was sad

  • StevieB

Also it was clear to see where Hayden’s head was at . I don’t think we’ll be seeing him again in black and white somehow . And it was a clear red by the way ….a shocking tackle

  • StevieB

And Manquillo showed himself for exactly what he is , the way he was clinging to Murphy was embarrassing

    • Geordiegiants

      That Murphy looked really good.

      • Martin Rooney

Jacob’s pretty good if he’s used correctly, manquillio we’ll I’ll continue to support him whilst hes and nufc player and because our great manager bought him.

      • glassjawsh-got-banned

I suspect it was as much Manquillo looking awful as it was Josh Murphy looking good

        • Geordiegiants

          Your definetly right about that.

      • StevieB

        He did yeah.

    • Peter C

That must be the final nail, in his Newcastle career.

      TOTALLY NOT GOOD ENOUGH

  • Billmag

The amount of times sky sports has been advertised lately the subscription’s must be down, our match today won’t help to sell it that’s for sure. Abysmal.

    • Geordiegiants

Did anyone else notice that they were messing around with the sound to keep our fans protests quiet?

      • StevieB

We can’t blame no one but the 52k who pay him every week mate….sad reality unfortunately, people need to change there lifestyles, it’s part of family’s routine, part of there week which they enjoy as a family is going to the match days together, lads who meet up for a session on the drink and the match , we need them all to stay away as it’s the only way we can move on, it’s just too much of an ask of them in my opinion, I can see why they go.

        • Arty Hume

” sad reality unfortunately, people need to change there lifestyles, it’s part of family’s routine, part of there week which they enjoy as a family is going to the match days together, lads who meet up for a session on the drink and the match , we need them all to stay away as it’s the only way we can move on, it’s just too much of an ask of them in my opinion “, sadly the truth, putting their own needs above the club! It will come back and bite them in the a$$ when we are relegated, we’ll see where they go then, but having said that look what happend last time we were down, too sad to think about!!!

  • East Durham Mag

Fatty must be having a proper laugh tonight.

    • Martin Rooney

      I’m gutted to be honest

  • BanJones

Lack of sensible investment meant that we had a want away player playing out of position when the whatsits hit the fan. It was a difficult ask of Hayden and he blew it.
Ashley’s fault because he is an owner who knows nothing. Blindingly obvious peeps.

    • Ram Kishore

Players are at fault today imho.

      • Yeah, Hayden has the experience to not do challenges like that. He’ll most likely miss 2-3 games for that, and Kenedy might miss 3 as well. On top of that, Manquillo was a laughing matter yesterday! He looked like a League 2 fullback up against Raheem Sterling!
Sterry can’t be worse, but Rafa never forgets things like this.
Manquillo did OK last term, but his gone downhill for sure. Pretty much his last game in BW for me.

        • Ram Kishore

Maybe or maybe not.. players like Manq have had far worse just like Diame ..We may never know ..
Bad match but definitely we deserve more than a point..
Arter’s and Warnock’s poetic justice was very perfect

  • ghostrider

    Players and manager at fault.
