The Newcastle team v Tottenham has just been confirmed.

Rafa Benitez hoping to get off to a much-needed positive start.

Last season saw United lose 2-0 on the opening game against Spurs, Shelvey handing them victory with his red card.

This is who Rafa Benitez starts with:

Dubravka, Yedlin, Lascelles, Clark, Dummett, Ritchie, Shelvey, Diame, Kenedy, Perez, Joselu

and the Subs:

Darlow, Manquillo, Schar, Ki, Atsu, Muto, Rondon

The folly of not backing Rafa Benitez early in the window showing, as no new faces from the squad who finished last season.

The bench though looking a bit better, with Rondon, Muto, Ki and Schar all featuring.

Newcastle v Tottenham Match Betting:

  • Peaky

Really not sure of Clark at this level….

    • Wor Lass

He was a liability last season. Good lad but maybe at Championship standard – we`ll soon find out!

      • Peaky

Have you escaped the floods down your way….looked bad on the news.

        • Wor Lass

Didn`t even know about them, m8 – we`re desperate for water here. Ironic after the winter and spring we had.

          • Peaky

Getting disillusioned with this site Wor Lass….too many people using multiple aliases….I would rather just jack it in altogether rather than change my posting name….I stopped last week for a few days and just watched from afar and there really are some total idiots on here…

          • Wor Lass

Too true – I`m not on much now. Triple M and Nutty have gone completely.

  • robbersdog

I see Atsu’s on the bench; I’d forgotten about him and hardly anyone mentions him these days.

I suppose he’s a reasonable understudy for Kenedy, but I can’t help thinking that he epitomises the general mediocrity of our squad.

  • Paul Patterson

The side that got promoted plus Dubravka, Kenedy and Joselu . .
    Not the greatest but HTL.

  • robbersdog

The Spurs team looks awesome; if I was a Tottenham fan, I wouldn’t be moaning about a lack of signings, I’d be looking forward to a Champions League place, and possibly even a crack at the league title.

  • Leicester Mag

So Hos starts, this point alone shows the club’s transfer window was FUBAR. Sorry but he should be nowhere near the starting line-up.

  • SuperDesHamilton

Shola must be taking a pay check from fatty, it was nauseating hearing him waxing lyrical about Ashley & the way he runs the club 🤢

  • Billmag

Just listened to Shola on the Premier league live talking utter rubbish, giving credit to the owner saying the club has no debt had to switch it off it was nauseating. Must be after a job in HoF.

    • Leicester Mag

Listening to this 🐴💩 not quite sure what kind of job he is after!

      • Billmag

Other supporters listening to that 💩 will be wondering what the eff we are moaning about.

    • gordon

Obviously values his new Sky job (who incidentally did not say one word, not one, about the protests not even on SSN – imagine if this was Manure or Arsenal). Lost any respect I had for the man.

      • Leazes.

There was a Sky Camera there at the protest and he was filming from the start… looked like a little hobbit with curly hair.

        • gordon

Yeah apparently has been something on SSN now – haven’t seen it yet though too busy watching Diame’s horror show (haha he just hit the post as we speak!)

    • SuperDesHamilton

      It was sickening 🤢

    • Ben Jones

I had feared this would happen to Shola, the man formally known as the mackem slayer, now known as the scummy hoop licker who scored a few flukes against the smb’s.

      RIP the mackem slayer

  • Leicester Mag

Not one of the new signings plays – we are stronger than last year by what measure? 🙄

    • Peaky

Asian shirt sales….we are romping home…

      • Leazes.

We’re on Sky too… Ashley will tell him to make a sub in the second half.

  • 1957

Rondon clearly hasn’t got the message, you need to run around a lot in training if you want to beat the Hoss to a first team place. Benitez tactics are not so complicated that a new striker couldn’t come in and start after a few days. Surely the manager can’t think 🐴 is the better bet for goals

    • Billmag

Let’s not be silly en Rafa has never had a chance to put the new lads through there paces with there new team mates owing to getting the business done far too late.

    • Wor Lass

You know what Rafa`s like – he never even wants to start our own players when they`ve been away on international duty because they haven`t been able to prepare properly for that specific match.

  • Leicester Mag

    8 minutes 🙁🙁

    • Leazes.

      Needless corner, mistake by keeper.

      • SuperDesHamilton

No pleasing you like, dour old man

  • Leicester Mag

HOS !!!! Whale oil beef hooked!

  • Wezza

    Joselu!

  • Leicester Mag

Oh well nornal service is resumed FFS

    • Wezza

      beat me to it hehe.

  • Peaky

Fuckinghate Dele Ali……one of those faces…..

    • Milburn_Taylor

you could have scored from that cross

    • Leicester Mag

Eye the kind of if we’d paid £500K more we’d have signed him face.

  • Wezza

    Normal service resumed :(

  • Milburn_Taylor

been in town the lads were in fine voice outside Ashley`s shop, just got back in time for the match

    • Leazes.

I was there…. Charnley and Bishop targeted as well as Ashley

      • Peaky

        Good…

        • Milburn_Taylor

It`s was a decent protest the banner was the full length of the shop

      • Milburn_Taylor

i was 5 yards from the mounted Police, could only stay 30 mins but i think they got the message. great flag of Rafa

        • Leazes.

I was there from 10.45 it started early.

          • Milburn_Taylor

i came out of John Lewis at 10-45 & you`re right because it started well before the Goldsmiths clock hit 11

      • Milburn_Taylor

I`d be there every week if they want, he`s got to go

  • gordon

Son going to Asian games next week!? Does that mean we lose Muto and Ki?

    • steve

No, it’s like the Olympics, U23s with a couple of overage players.

      • gordon

        Bet Poccettino’s spitting feathers!

  • Leicester Mag

Just taken our best player off why?

  • Leazes.

I can see the season panning out along the same lines as last year…. but with Rafa’s contract running down.

  • Leicester Mag

    Atsu utter sh$te

    • Duh

      Totally

      • gordon

Much as I love Rafa taking off Ritchie for Atsu (who was abysmal) completely baffles me

        • Tony English

          Totally agree.

  • Milburn_Taylor

    Rondon hit the bar

  • Leicester Mag

    Jammy bar stewards!

  • Leicester Mag

Endeavour can’t be faulted be lacking that little be extra class. Just missing couple of quality players if only we had some money

    • Milburn_Taylor

been good in patches but as you say we lack that extra bit of quality

  • Milburn_Taylor

    Yedlin can`t walk, looks bad

  • Leazes.

Looks like we’ve lost Yedlin for a while

    • Milburn_Taylor

one of the better players injured along with Lejeune, 50% of the back four gone

      • Leazes.

        We need a bigger bus….. Knee cruciate ligaments….. 2 – 6 weeks

        • Milburn_Taylor

lose a midfielder & we`re done, Shelvey has to last 38 games, we can replace Diame to a certain extent but not Shelvey

          • Leazes.

            Ashleys gamble is falling apart.

          • Milburn_Taylor

your luck only goes so far & there`s no quarter given in this league.

          • Angelswithdirtyfaces

            Yep… entirely predictably

          • Peaky

There’s lad in House of Fraser who sells TVs that could slot in for Shelvey….

          • Milburn_Taylor

got a txt of my mate down south in the 2nd half.
            when`s Fraser coming on, lol

  • Leicester Mag

    Yedlin knackered to the bargin

    • Peaky

Oh no…it’s bring out Mannequin time next week…

      • Milburn_Taylor

you know who will be scouring the out of contract players list,
        i`d put money on it

        • Peaky

Ryder will have them on the Ronnie already….

          • Milburn_Taylor

            Press enter, done & printed

    • Duh

      Should have signed 2 fullbacks

  • Megatron1505

    Quick analysis….

We look solid and compact most of the time.

Kenedy is as frustrating as he is good.

Atsu was terrible, should never have replaced Ritchie.

Dubravka, Lascelles, Diame, Shelvey, Clark and Dummett all very good.

Still not enough quality up top, although Muto showed some nice touches.

    • Leazes.

Looked like two teams in different league’s…. and it is!…. that was a spuds side with 5 ‘tired’ players from the World Cup.

      • steve

        No it didn’t

        • Leazes.

          Three guest votes…. Bye Kevin

          • glassjawsh-got-banned

I upvoted him and I’m still not a troll. We actually looked better than I expected. Not everyone who disagrees with you is a sad little attention [email protected]

          • Ashley-out

if you look i don`t think he meant you, he said 3 you are the 4th

          • Leazes.

Doesn’t matter to me I blocked him last year.

          • Ashley-out

            fine

          • Tony English

He must see the upvotes by folk he’s blocked as ‘guests’…

so as me you and ‘Duh’ agreed with Steve…he’s now Kevin…and blocked by Leazes…

so when Steve upvotes someone he will also be a seen as a guest….and then someone else will become ‘Kevin’…

he’s stuck in a ridiculous loop of his own making, and some people think he’s not paranoid?

          • Ashley-out

he is far from paranoid, he knows a troll when he sees 1

          • Tony English

Can I presume that your comment is sarcastic?

          • steve

I we hit the woodwork twice, forced a good save and missed a sitter. Spurs may have the better quality but there certainly wasn’t much in it.

          • Ashley-out

there wasn`t much in it but the extra quality counts as it did today. it`s points we want not hard luck stories

    • Duh

      I prefer Murphy

  • Peaky

Where was Murphy today ???? Atsu total waste of space….

    • gordon

Baffling substitution to say the least

    • Milburn_Taylor

Can`t understand taking off Ritchie & he threw a strop in the stand

      • Peaky

Wonder if this goes back to trying to flog him to Stoke ?

        • Milburn_Taylor

doesn`t look good, 1st game and a player not happy

        • Tony English

We don’t really know that he did try to flog him.

Don’t get the Richie substitution at all, I thought I must have missed him getting an early card as he was jumping into a few challenges just before he was subbed.

          Muto looked tidy.

      • foggy

Agree Ritchie should have stayed on he was having a decent game a making an effort which can’t be said for Perez. Atsu was hopeless.

  • Wezza

Good effort that, a little unlucky with the woodwork but Dubravka made an outstanding save.

  • gordon

Pished me off the number of times we ignored overlapping wingers/full-backs when we were attacking

  • Leazes.

Sky didn’t show if the ball was over the line, I suppose we’ll have to wait until MOTD CGI for confirmation…… the linesman was in no doubt.

    • steve

It has nothing to do with the linesman, the referee gets a signal on his watch when it crosses the line.

      • Tony English

How many years have we had goal line technology now?

Can someone who isn’t blocked by Grandad carefully explain the modern age to him?

    • foggy

The ball was 9mm over the line

      • Leazes.

Just rewound it …. that’s conclusive then….that linesman must have the eyes of an eagle with binoculars or was just very keen to award it…. I bet if it was the other way around…..

        • Damon Horner

Don’t the referees get a beep in their ear? Goal line technology.

          • Ashley-out

only when it`s against the Toon

          • Leazes.

That must be it then forgot about that.

  • Milburn_Taylor

3pts next week, we can do it & we have to beat the likes of Cardiff

  • kingfisher

Rafa says ” our aim is to survive this season” Sorry but that simply is not good enough for Newcastle United Football Club and anyone who accepts that (i.e the people who attended SJP today) does not have the best interests of the club at heart.
We signed 7 players, Spurs signed none and they beat us at home,I think that just about sums up the pathetic situation we find ourselves in,and yet still the hypnotised sheep follow their shepherd to SJP.

    • Ashley-out

it`s the same old patter every year, survival and it`ll continue to be that way until the parasite leaves

      • Duh

It will be very different patter if Rafa leaves next season

        • Ashley-out

          it`ll be relegation

  • Come&TakeIt1836

Did anyone have a better game than Joselu? Crazy, right? Ritchie was about even with him… maybe better as he provided quality, hard work, and the great assist while being more involved throughout… but credit where due, one real chance provided, one shot, one goal, strong effort throughout, and it was Joselu who played what should have become an assist out of the crowd to Kenedy (who squandered it in amazing fashion).

    Atsu was shockingly poor.

    • Ashley-out

if Joselu was motm, what does that say about the rest of them

      • Duh

Well the hoss got one more goal than Harry Kane

        • Ashley-out

          that`s not what i said !

        • Come&TakeIt1836

          August Scoring For Careers
          Joselu = 1
          Kane = 0
          😂

      • Come&TakeIt1836

Everybody else (except Ritchie) either switched off at times or simply disappeared. Diame was better in the second half but had some terrible touches in the first. Kenedy was great between the boxes but added nothing in the end. Lascelles, Clark, and Shelvey were solid but did not end up providing any special touch or pass.

        • Ashley-out

that`s what you get when you don`t invest in quality

    • Damon Horner

Think you’re right in honesty. Over a gameplay I would go with Ritchie but Joselu got a goal and what should have been a good assist.

      • Ashley-out

we were poor today, can`t understand Ritchie being subbed

        • Damon Horner

Not what we wanted it to be but certainly not as bad as we be seen before today. Sadly they are just better than us.

          • Ashley-out

if Ashley had taken Rafa`s advice we may have got the 3 points today, as it is it`s going to be a long hard season

          • Damon Horner

Agree with that one. One man’s fault in the main.

    • Tony English

I think Ritchie and Kenedy shaded it – but to be fair to Joselu today was his best performance for us, a great pass to Kenedy.

Only real criticisms today is Perez having one of his slightly anonymous games, and Yedlin should really have stepped into Dele to at least make his finish more difficult.

Muto looked tidy and pacey, his stuttering movement reminds me of Malcolm Allen and Michael Owen for some reason.

  • robbersdog

A decent performance – apart from Atsu, who was terrible when he came on.

We’ve lost Yedlin for a few weeks, and we don’t have a credible replacement. I wonder if either of our two, new centre-backs can play at right-back?!

    • Ashley-out

1 game in and we`re already thin on the ground

      • Duh

Yes the lack of signing full backs was always a massive risk

        • Ashley-out

as some say, he likes to gamble & that can & will cause us major problems

  • James

Very frustrating, had a couple if chances near the end

  • kingfisher

The BBC website reports that ” Spurs came more into the game as Newcastles
early energy began to wane”. Despite Spurs fielding nine first team players who hadn’t had a proper pre season after being involved in the world cup, they still beat us.It’s going to be a long, long season.

    • Duh

You can spin it anyway you want. We did not have time to integrate fully new players for example.

It was a close game (what I saw of it) and we could have easily equalized and may have on another day.

They are a top 4 side, if bbc are going to use “tired from the World Cup” then it should only get worse for spurs and on that basis every team should beat them this season right?

    • Ashley-out

      3 words, lack of quality

  • X,WHY,Y MAN.

Entertaining game for a season opener but both sides were wide open at the back.
Spurs could have had a hatful in all honesty and it could have looked so much worse if they had taken a few of those chances.

It is defo going to be a very long season for Newcastle !

  • kingfisher

Any one who was at SJP today and is complaining about the standard (or rather lack of it) of our players, or anything else should give themselves a good talking to.
If you’ve renewed your season ticket, bought a new season ticket or paid at the turnstiles then by giving Ashley your money you are saying you approve of Ashley and the state of our club at present. Now don’t get me wrong, if you are ok with our owner (and I know that some are) then of course there’s absolutely no reason why you should stop going, but if you are not happy and you still keep on going then more fool you.
“You can fool some of the people all of the time, and you can fool all of the people some of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time”

    • Ashley-out

Difficult for some as i think they have to buy them under one of the parasites schemes

    • grumpyoldmag

Mate I’m 60 year old – it could take 10 years 20 years until he leaves – you want me never to watch my team again before I die – you think you have a right to judge me – eff you

      • kingfisher

Dear me Mr Grumpy, that’s a bit strong!! you are well named ! I’m 65 years old and have spent most of those years supporting Newcastle United and spent thousands of pounds following my team through out that time, like lots of others, possibly your self included. But I put the future of our great club before any personal pleasure I get from going to SJP and giving this odious man any more of my hard earned cash! If people like you keep on going regardless of what Ashley is doing to our club then future generations will not have a club to support.

        • Duh

It’s a tough one, unfortunately he owns the club lock, stock and barrel. Most of the dosh comes from tv and many fans can’t bring themselves to walk away.

I do think think social/political pressure is the best way to try to get him to sell.

The issue is that there do not seem to be any serious buyers otherwise they would have paid the premium he wants and have money leftover to invest.

          • kingfisher

It is a tough one Duh.As you say, many fans can’t walk away, but the people who are organising protests etc are not asking the 50,000 to boycott every game, just the odd high profile televised games, but they are not even prepared to miss one game to help get Ashley out.
Every time I post a comment about “the 50,000 sheep not willing to boycott a game” ,I get lots of upvotes and comments agreeing with me, and only the odd one or two disagreeing, so judging by that, the majority of fans want him gone.

          • Duh

I think very few people don’t want rid of him, the disagreement is how to go about it.

Boycotting games I do think will effect players.

        • grumpyoldmag

Not strong at all – you are effectively saying I should stop doing something I enjoy for potentially the rest of my life. Not fair. Not balanced. You believe by not going you can affect Ashley’s behaviour – I don’t – difference of opinion or viewpoint but how do you think this will put the club out of business for future generations? Not logical. No reason to try to split supporters. No reason to disrespect or question people who do go. I go. I enjoy it. I would sh we had a different owner. I also went when the pirate owned us. And McLean and his attitude to the “family silver” I will go when we’re owned by whichever businessman buys us next.

          • kingfisher

Fair comment Grumps, but I’m not saying stop going completely, just boycott the odd game perhaps a couple through out the season.Yes I went when Mckeag was there and Lord Westwood. When I said it was strong I meant when you told me to eff off ! Not very nice just because you don’t agree with my views. As you know football is a matter of opinions and we all have our own thoughts about things.😁

          • grumpyoldmag

Fair dos – if there was a well organised pre publicised campaign to boycott say manure at home I’d join it but it’s impossible to organise 50k people to do that – and it still won’t persuade him to sell at less than he thinks it’s worth – we’re stuck with himuntil he decides otherwise – that’s the truth of the matter and keyboard warriors will change eff all – and just btw -apart from not going what have you actively done to persuade him to leave? Watched the match in the pub?

          • kingfisher

Empty seats for a televised match will upset the people who give Ashley his money i.e.Sky, so eventually they will put pressure on him,and even if that does’nt work it’s better than doing nothing at all. You say what have I done apart from not going, well as you said in a previous post, Ashley could be here for years and I’m prepared to never set foot in SJP again until he leaves, that is sacrifice enough, and a sacrifice you and others are not prepared to make.

It’s like being asked to go on strike for better working conditions, wages etc. There will always be those who are willing to take direct action and make sacrifices, as opposed to those who just carry on going to work, not losing any money then enjoying the better wages and conditions that the striking workers brought about.
You say Ashley could be here for years, well there’s only one reason for that:he’s making money and if he continues to get a full house at SJP then obviously he will just sit back and fill his pockets.

  • grumpyoldmag

Monk Seaton and ghost rider a little quit today? And what happened at the great 3 bulls meet up?
