The Newcastle team v Nottingham Forest has just been confirmed.

Rafa Benitez hoping to get the first win of the season even if cups may not be the highest priority.

Newcastle of course lost to Forest 3-2 in extra time at the same stage of this competition last season.

This is who Rafa Benitez starts with:

Darlow, Sterry, Schar, Fernandez, Clark, Atsu, Longstaff, Ki, Kenedy, Muto, Joselu

and the Subs:

Elliot, Yedlin, Dummett, Diame, Murphy, Perez, Rondon

Altogether there are six changes from Sunday, Darlow plus five outfield players.

Rafa looks to have kept his three centre-backs, unless Clark ends up playing left-back.

If it is wing-backs, then most likely Kenedy on the left, as well as Sterry on the right.

  • If we can’t win against Forrest with this team then it’s clearly lack of motivation. I don’t see how this 11 is a weak side.
Great chance for Sterry, Longstaff, Ki, Kenedy and Muto to get fired up and start banging in the goals.

  • Mrkgw

Interesting line up and will be good to see how the players gel. Never been convinced by Darlow and would have preferred to have seen Elliott start. Fingers crossed for the win.

    • Darlow is a super-solid backup keeper. Elliot is very poor with crosses, but all-round we don’t have a BAD keeper on our books.

      • Mrkgw

We will see but again, I’ve never rated him personally. All down to views at the end of the day but either way, we should win this comfortably.

        • Ram Kishore

He was one of the solid keepers in the league during our championship season..

  • Mike

    should win with that lineup

  • robbersdog

I don’t think it’s three centre-backs; Clark at left-back seems the most likely option.

Not a bad looking team, and a front three of Kenedy, Muto and Joselu should get the job done against a Championship defence.

  • 1957

I thought Rondon might get another start.

Is he poor on the training ground?, is he another Slimani came injured and can’t shake it off or has he made the schitt list already.

I personally would have kept the Hoss fresh for the weekend, there’ll be a lot of running to be done then

    • Kenny

      Galloping

  • Ashley-out

apart from Kenedy that is a championship team. well done Ashley

    • Kev-82

You’re right, Kenedy is League 1 judging by the Cardiff game and how easily he was skinned for the Forest goal.

      • Ashley-out

the whole teams not worth a nut

  • Danimal

I never knew they did football on the Sky Comedy Channel. “Newcastle United have their sights firmly set on a first trophy in fifty years”.

    • glassjawsh-got-banned

      tragi-comedy

  • Chris-Chapple

1 down in less than 2 mins

    • glassjawsh-got-banned

      and from Murphy no less…

      • Kenny

At least he didn’t celebrate the goal

  • Brazilian John

Well done Schar!! Next time you can attack the ball with your head… otherwise you can behead the other guy.

  • Kenny

You get what you pay for, it’s painful to watch a Newcastle side that has nothing to offer, let’s hope Rafa has a plan B.

    • mentalman

He never has a plan b

      • Ashley-out

        No plan A either

    • Will In Despair!

I’m afraid we can’t afford plan a, plan b is defo also out the question!

Now reading thro these latest Accounts by Mugpie, the 25 year experienced certified top City Accountant, and all this unfortunate debt we seem to have acquired, ah also because we don’t do due dilligence; plan 💩 is the best we can really ever do, until everyone, yes everyone the f00k wakes up!

Sorry, in all honesty it did actually start out as a joke, or attempt at one, then my pizzed-off-ness raged and took over – apologies.

  • Danimal

This has all the makings of a giant killing. Or it would do if Forest hadn’t got that early goal.

  • mentalman

The best thing about this game so far is sterry and longstaff

    • Ashley-out

nothing is good about this game unless you live in Nottingham

    • GlasgowMag

Don’t see it myself both have been
      pretty poor!!!

      • mentalman

They’ve done no worse than the rest

  • Ashley-out

Not one shot on goal in the first half from Newcastle

  • Mrkgw

Commentry quote of the night; ‘he does like to put himself about Jamie Sterry and if the balls there he will try and take it’.

Erm, isn’t thst the point in being a footballer? Otherwise, whats the point?

    • Steviemagpie

Heard that ps how does he know has he watched him regularly like 😁

  • Leicester Mag

I’m currently thanking my lucky stars I’m on holiday, otherwise no doubt I’d have been stupid enough to pop over to Forrest. Yet again our bargin bucket buys showing why our transfer strategy is so sheight

    • Danimal

Hopefully Monkfish, who apparently goes to every game, will be marvelling at the newly enhanced squad depth. Although when you read his comments he seems more interested in the bygone age of hooliganism than anything on the pitch.

      • Leicester Mag

Not sure he could make it. Think Wednesday night is flat earth quiz night or is it beer mat swaps night?

      • MrShack66

He’s (supposedly) an accountant so he’s definitely not into football violence.

  • Burt Humperdink

Clark’s distribution is shocking, he’s playing like a pub team player. Longstaff seems nervous lots of effort but keeps scrabbling with the ball at his feet.

    • mentalman

      It always has been

  • Leicester Mag

There’s a quote below that could be our new motto he’s no worse than the rest.

  • GlasgowMag

What’s the score with Kenedy doesn’t look confident at all!!! Keeps losing the ball can someone tell him he’s playing against a mid table championship club needs to up his game Cardiff revisited at the moment!!

    • DC1964

I agree, he cant hold the ball up at all!

      • Jimblag23

He always tries one of those little spins and loses possession all the time. How can he look so different from last season? Kind of glad we haven’t actually bought him outright based on current form.

        • mentalman

He didn’t have a pre season

        • DC1964

Yeah, he’s not been at it this season. Early days though!

    • SuperDesHamilton

Has he made a forward pass yet?!

  • GlasgowMag

Why did we get rid of Murphy still looks a handful!!

    • SuperDesHamilton

That’s because he’s playing against our defence 😂

      • GlasgowMag

        😂😂😂

      • Kenny

        😂

  • GlasgowMag

Good tactical move just get rid of their best players by taking them out😂😂😂

  • mentalman

Great move selling mbemba and buying schar

    • Ram Kishore

Mbemba would have struggled too..But he’s atleast quicker and stronger

  • mentalman

30mins to save it, where’s the subs?

  • Kenny

    Embarrassing

  • GlasgowMag

    Depressing!!!

  • mentalman

Rondon must be on the naughty step

  • Peaky

No sleep for Guardiloa for 3 nights..he’ll be shytting himself before Saturday…..
    ..

  • mentalman

    I forgot atsu was playing

  • Jimblag23

The only positive I’d say about Kenedy is that he’s not Atsu.

    • Peaky

      🤣😂🤣

    • mentalman

      They’ve both gone missing tonight

  • Danimal

Have we won a 50-50 in any part of the pitch at any time of this match? Total lack of belief and conviction.

    • Kneebotherm8

      No we haven’t.

  • Peaky

The whole club from top to bottom is up the Swannee withoot a paddle……

  • Kenny

    Their keepers ordered a pizza

    • Kneebotherm8

He had 2 in the first half.

    • Phil Yare

i honestly think most teams that play us could live easily without a keeper. even with open goals we’d struggle to find space to shoot. in fact with the common tactics i wonder if they bother shooting practice in training

  • nufcslf

But I bet we are well organized defending a 1 nil loss. Almost like a clean sheet.

  • DC1964

It’s the same in the cups every season, may as well not bother watching!

  • GlasgowMag

    Get in there!!!!

    • Duh

      All part of the plan

    • Leicester Mag

      Fukaduck we’ve scored

  • wheyayeman

I want Ashley out a lot more than I want a hamstrung Benitez as manager!

  • Rev

The difference is the managers… one of them set the team up to have a go. If this was Pardew or Mclaren they would be getting dogs abuse. Is it a training exercise to give Kennedy and Atsu game time?

    • Danimal

Their manager had better players available. Which is worrying.

      • Marveauxless

No he didn’t, Jack Colback is considered to be one of their key players. That’s a pretty damning insight into the quality of their squad

        • Danimal

Is he as good as Longstaff?

          • Marveauxless

Benitez had better players available than Longstaff, he chose not to play them

          • Danimal

            Who? Cabaye? Sissoko? Wijnaldum?

          • Rev

Atsu and Kennedy are better players apparently .. as are the rest. Yet somehow it doesnt work on the pitch. Are the players underperforming because of the Owner?

  • Danimal

    Pathetic.

  • Wezza

    Seriously.

  • Wezza

This is all on Ashley, not Rafa’s team selection.

  • Kneebotherm8

Chelsea all over again……we deserve nowt tbh……..

  • Wezza

    and now 3-1

    • Kneebotherm8

      Kenedy what ya doing????

  • Clarko

    Rafa out!

    • wheyayeman

No mate your boyfriend Ashley needs to get out!

      • Clarko

        Just a repost:

We had a terrible summer but we should be walking all over Cardiff and Forest, the amount of abuse previous managers have received for getting knocked out in the first cup match, Benitez is no different. Negative tactics, poor performances, poor results, training ground fights and fallouts. Disgusting start to the season.

        • Danimal

I thought you and your pals were happy with the transfer window?

          • Clarko

Quotes made by me a month ago:

‘As for me being happy with how this window has gone? The answer is no, I’m not happy, we’re ~£60m short of me being happy and that is a direct result of Ashley withholding funds from Benitez. That really major issue aside, I’m happy with what Benitez/Charnley have been able to achieve with the resources they have, much happier with the players being brought in this summer than the ones that were brought in last summer (when Ashley actually gave Benitez a budget).’

‘I was concerned a few weeks back that Ashley wouldn’t allow Benitez to spend the funds that are very much available, I think it’s now apparent that those concerns are very much real so it goes back to happiness, would I be happy if we brought in Rondón, Muto, Schär (confirmed) and Bryan before the window shuts? No, we would be around £60m short of me being happy with the business done in this window.’

(Are you happy with the window?) ‘No, absolutley not.’

Looks like you were wrong. Again.

          • Danimal

Missed that one. Sorry I don’t follow your every comment. You’ve been consistently up Ashley’s back end for years, so I was just going by that. Congratulations if you’ve seen the light.

          • Clarko

‘Sorry I don’t follow your every comment.’

So why would you make a comment about my comments? You just like talking about subjects you know nothing about. Uninformed.

    • nufcslf

Rafa is not God and can take the blame for the last two matches especially. Deep down I get the feeling he is showing what total fat c**t Cashley really is the way he has ruined the club. Rubbing in his face if you like.

      • Clarko

We had a terrible summer but we should be walking all over Cardiff and Forest, the amount of abuse previous managers have received for getting knocked out in the first cup match, Benitez is no different. Negative tactics, poor performances, poor results, training ground fights and fallouts. Disgusting start to the season.

  • Mrkgw

    One word – EMBARRASSING.

  • Brazilian John

What about a mediocre owner, a mediocre team with a good coach? Maybe it’s time for us to have a mediocre coach too.
    To balance things…

  • Danimal

Yes it’s a penalty but 1. it would have been missed and 2. even if not, we’d have lost the shootout. Saves time this way.

  • Ashley-out

Better team won, pen or no pen

  • Wezza

All on Ashley, he will be pleased we can focus on the league. All we have to look forward to is staying in the division.

    • Danimal

      Or not.

      • Wezza

Yeah or not. Even if we do stay up then what. Same old story.
Get this FCB out of the club!!

  • Danimal

Nice that Perez cares. That’s encouraging at least.

    • Kneebotherm8

It is…..one or two others tonight could have taken a leaf out his book.

  • Leicester Mag

Just when you think we find the bottom we are proved wrong. Not fit to wear the shirt

  • DC1964

The most blatant penalty you will ever see!

  • Marveauxless

Kenedy is an embarrassment. Beyond lazy for the first goal and clearly couldn’t care less about the 3rd.

    • Peaky

Said after the Cardiff game….we were the only team really wanting him….says it all I’m afraid…

    • Kneebotherm8

On a positive note…..we should be able to sign him for a couple of million at the end of the season…….

      • Mrkgw

We should be paid to have him.

        • Kneebotherm8

Based on his last two performances you’re absolutely correct…..

  • Toonfen

3-1 We are an embarrassment a joke!!! FFS ASHLEY JUST GO!

    • Kenny

      I had 3-1 to us 😁

  • gordon

Watch Schar ‘chasing back’ on their second goal – absolute f00kin disgrace

    • Rabid Dog

Should have been much much tighter…. very poor

  • Mrkgw

The dark cloud of MA hangs continuously over our club. That was yet another toothless display and when changed for the better, it was way too late. Absolutely pathetic, cup game or not.

    • Rev

How is it the owners fault when the team cant motivate itself to match a championship side away in the cup?

      • Mrkgw

Well, there is that too. It was an abysmal, lacklusture display. But, the side are weak due to the quality of personnel and for that, the buck lies with Ashley. Supporters are split over Mitro but I will never, ever get why Rafa sold him.

  • Toonfen

    F$$$$$g grounding day!

  • Rev

How about the manager comes out and says the better team won, we weren’t up for it and we didnt deserve it and i have to take some of the blame for that …. instead of blame the owner, if he had backed me i would have to play this lot. Embarrasing.

    • nufcslf

He is 11 year cause of the problem, that’s why…………

    • Wezza

      Do one troll.

      • Rev

Seriously? Anyone who has an opinion other than blame Ashley ignore everything else is a troll?

      • James B

You’re another with Rafa’s d!ck in their mouth. We played Nottingham Forest! Our squad is worth more then theirs you r3tard so don’t use money as an excuse, by that logic we should be beating them.. Let me guess if we lose to Blackpool’s under 15’s it will be Ashley’s fault too?

Why is Rafa on any wages at all if you blame games like this on Ashley?

Spurs outfield 10 cost £86 million and Pogba cost £89 yet they smashed 3-0 at Old Trafford. And yet dum3 [email protected] like you constantly ignore tactics, team selection, subs, in game and player management, coaching, youth players etc because you don’t believe it makes any difference. It’s always about Ashley.

  • Kenny

Newcastle were 2nd best in every area of the pitch.

    • nufcslf

Really encouraging with only Man City to play on the weekend. The attack on Shyt Direct needs upping a lot.

      • Leicester Mag

        City will fookin declare

        • nufcslf

          Priceless.

      • Peaky

Man City away is going to be embarrassing…..90% possession coming up ???

        • gordon

We’ll be lucky to reach 10% and what we do have will be in our own half!

        • nufcslf

So very very true. Just as well the best 11 will be fit and ready to go.

        • Mrkgw

Peaky – wonder whatever happened to Nutjob? Haven’t seen anything from him for ages.

          • Leicester Mag

            Or MMM

          • Mrkgw

Can’t remember that one LM (MMM). Always a shame when the regulars drift off. They have their reasons and the abuse which flows for daring to differ in opinion can get a bit much as I’ve encountered myself in recent days. Just have to take it with a pinch of salt.

          • Peaky

He got fed up as far as I can gather…..too many trolls talking bollox..

          • Mrkgw

Shame that. He always seemed to make light of it all. Don’t even see Jezza either.

        • Jimblag23

          That’s a bit optimistic!

        • Phil Yare

i’d say 95% as we will have to kick off after every goal

    • Kneebotherm8

      They were shocking….

  • Toonfen

Even groundhog day! ASHLEY OUT !

  • Toonfen

A laughing stock! ASHLEY OUT OUT OUT!

  • GlasgowMag

Well where do we go from here another season no chance of silverware and a relegation battle to look forward to!! Cheers fatboy you’re playing a blinder!!!

  • gallowgate26

Out of the cup at the first attempt. Groundhog Day under Cashley? This is becoming embarrassing now. No ambition whatsoever. Well I didn’t renew my season ticket, so happy and correct with my decision!

  • Superdooperhooper

Cue Monkseaton -well if we’d won that penalty it would have been a different story
and we could be top of the league if all the planets aligned -and if I was a poncy actor or French male model I could be in bed with Kylie now . But I’m not so I’m not

    • Jimblag23

We don’t score penalties when we get them anyway so it’s all irrelevant.

      • Kneebotherm8

        Fair point…..

  • ScreamStevie

Ok. It was an irrelevant cup competition and we played a pretty much second string 11. But if those players had any aspiration to get into the first team (even as cover) they would have had to do a lot better against a relatively average Championship team. More than ever it shows that outside the first 11 (plus the odd one or two) they just aren’t premiership quality…and that’s worrying. 5 things we learned from the match
    – Muto technically isn’t remotely in the same class as Perez
    – Whatever Kenedy had last season he seems to have misplaced (let’s hope it’s temporary)
    – Clark isn’t Premiership quality
    – Atsu isn’t even Championship quality
    – You pay £3m for a 26 year old centre back…you get Schar
The penalty decision was a disgrace but frankly it would have hardly have been justice if Newcastle had walked away with a victory…

    • Phil Yare

copy and paste the first sentence for the last 10 years.

  • Toonfen

    We’re doomed! ASHLEY OUT!

  • Kev-82

Gutless performance all round but Schar is an embarrassment of a defender hope to not see him in the team again, also based on last few games I wouldn’t care if I didn’t see Kenedy in a hurry.

  • Danimal

Sky are about to do a big feature on our club. Wonder how they’re going to play that?…

    • Kneebotherm8

No doubt Dennis the dodgy dwarf will have some input….

      • Danimal

        Maybe Monkfish will be on.

        • Leicester Mag

The only thing he’s on is meths

        • Kneebotherm8

What a double act, they’ll be competing for broonie points lickin’ Ashleys @ss…….

    • Jimblag23

I can’t even be bothered to watch it. I’m completely bored to death of everything to do with this club at the moment.
It’ll be turncoat Bellamy or Wise chatting a load of nonsense, the moron no nothings will buy every word of course.

      • Billmag

        Howey and Bellamy.

    • GToon

Get Ray Winston to play the part of Ashley and Frank Spencer to be Charnley. Transfer window in play now ………

      • Danimal

In the event they just settled for a photo of a big pile of steaming shyte and four people slagging it off. Good stuff.

  • Leicester Mag

What is the point in this Shytehouse of a club ? We lurch from one disinterested self inflicted crisis to another. Standing outside Direct Tat for 30 mins every other Saturday is a start but a some point a total boycott needs to be considered. Death by a thousand cuts otherwise

    • nufcslf

Empty ground, no away support and bad constant publicity for the fat c**t at every chance would shift him. Nothing else will wotk.

      • Phil Yare

there’s not enough unity to do that i think. we could get it down maybe to 30,000 but most people at the ground would still turn up if they changed the name of the team to sports direct united and played in red and white

we are where we are because we’ve kept giving him the profits

        • nufcslf

          Too very true.

  • Toonfen

I never thought I would get so uptight at losing again in the League Cup but thats how low we have sunk, Im 56 and I am resigned to never see us compete again never mind win anything, we are an utter joke! Enough is enough Im past caring now. RIP NUFC

  • Old codger

It felt like the late 80s watching Mcfaul or Smith’s teams
    Simply not good enough
Difference was that even those “useless” players like stimpson or Brock looked like they actually cared even though the y took dogs abuse each match
Kennedy and atsu. we’re a liability . very highly paid liabilitys

  • Billmag

Don’t know what’s happened to Kennedy that’s two games now he’s been abysmal, don’t know where we go from here people blaming Rafa for the team he picked but c’mon that team should have been good enough surely.

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

and I thought Clint Dempsey retiring would be the biggest soccer related bummer today. what even was that?

    • nufcslf

      A Cashley run football club……..

  • MadMag83

Pathetic what this club has been reduced to under Ashley. I can only hope to wake up tomorrow morning to find that the fat see-you-next-Tuesday has dropped dead from some cholesterol related ailment.

Sunderland could have beaten our lot based on that showing.

    • Phil Yare

they probably will next season, and ashley will still be here

  • Danimal

Howey’s doing well. First time anyone on Sky has criticised Ashley. Won’t be invited back next time!

  • Ruel Intentions

    Mission accomplished…

At least Longstaff looks a good player.

  • Leazes.

Anyone watching the debate on sky?….

Newcastle fan hits back……Bellamy calls for fans boycott and Ashley out

    • Mxpx

He is right… But there will be 52000 next home game

    • nufcslf

Interesting and much more that needed.

  • ToonTom

I honestly don’t imagine Ashley even bothers to check the scores. Did he even know there was a game on tonight?
For those of us schooled in the hope and then despair of the 1970s, followed by the hope and then despair of the 1980s, followed by the despair and then the hope of the 1990s, and then the hope and then despair of the 2000s, there is something missing from the 2010s which those too young to know may not have noticed. We have boundless despair, but the hope has genuinely gone. Evaporated. I feel for those who are too young to have known any following the Toon.
I too am 56. And I too am bored senseless by the inanity of Ashley’s attempts to run a football club as if it were a division of his sports emporia. I see no way that things will change. I see Rafa leaving next summer, and the despair deepening. And – worryingly – I’m just oh-so close to not being able to care anymore …

    • gallowgate26

Your hope/despair analysis is really insightful and pretty much sums up my career as a 30 yr old (relatively late developing) toon fan, sure I remember an aging Shearer etc. but basically all I’ve known since following seriously is utter mediocre mid-table/ championship wasted years. (I was more into music/played rugby to early teens). You Keegan entertainer supporting lot are so lucky, don’t know you’re born!!

    • nufcslf

This is hitting on an all time low. Just worry’s me that the second a couple wins come along all of the sheep will be back on-board to let Cashley carry on with yet another sh*t pysh taking season that is more than acceptable as long as a prem status is maintained. Just a f**king joke that isn’t worth the effort of following anymore. I’m 52 and have been through the same despair you feel. CASHLEY OUT!!!!!!

  • Mxpx

Well I have to say positives for me were schaar looking solid and rondon broke his duck that’s where they end too

    • Kneebotherm8

      That’s two positives……………you need a third………….you know the rules…………three negatives too please,that should be a doddle…….

      • Mxpx

Excellent viewing on sky ‘The Debate’. Seemed in tune with the huge problems faced.

      • Danimal

Geoff Shreeve tried to muddy the waters a bit but the three guests hammered Ashley.

Even Bellamy said he is a massive fan of Ashley (sick bag please) but then said he has to sell and also asked why no one wanted to buy it – asking too much?

Missed the start but its repeated at midnight…. seems Bellamy wants to run with the fox and chase with the hounds.

Steve Howey, Mark Warburton, Craig Bellamy and the Sky presenter all spoke well about the major problems at the club. They acknowledged the size of it, supporter expectation, failings on Ashleys part. Very honest and good to watch.
