Confirmed Newcastle team v Augsburg

Rafa Benitez has named his Newcastle team v Augsburg.

Newcastle United having beaten St Patrick’s Athletic 2-0 in the opening  kickabout, goals from Sean Longstaff and Christian Atsu (penalty).

Then then they moved on to Hull City, Joselu opening the scoring but Ayoze Perez needing to score late for Newcastle to grab a 2-2 draw.

Last Saturday night saw a very fortunate 0-0 draw at Porto, the Portuguese side somehow failing to score despite completely dominating and hitting the woodwork twice, plus a number of outstanding saves from Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow. Newcastle not having a shot on target.

Wednesday night then saw the luck very much run out, a shocker of a second half seeing Newcastle duly punished as they conceded four without reply against Braga.

Saturday afternoon sees NUFC up against Bundesliga club Augsburg, who finished 12th last season in the league.

Rafa Benitez naming the following eleven to start this afternoon (kick-off  3pm):

Darlow, Yedlin, Clark, Lascelles, Dummett, Ritchie, Hayden, Diame, Atsu, Perez, Joselu

Substitutes:

Elliot, Manquillo, Sterry, Schar, Murphy, Shelvey, Longstaff, Ki, Roberts, Kenedy

A few talking points.

Worrying to see Dubravka missing from both team and bench.

The absence of Dwight Gayle suggesting maybe that Rondon swap deal could be on?

Lascelles in the team is a positive after worries when he got a knock at Braga and came off at half-time.

Shelvey on the bench after missing Braga with a knock, hopefully fit enough to get a half.

Same with Kenedy, only featured in the first friendly so far, missing the next three after the birth of his daughter.

The first eleven today sees a whole team who played in the Championship season, apart from Joselu.

You have to say that with a week until the Premier League season kicks off, Newcastle are in a pretty woeful position, thanks to Mike Ashley undermining the manager. You are always going to get the odd injury (Lejeune) and knocks (Dubravka – hopefully nothing serious), but so little depth in our squad.
