Cardiff 0 Newcastle 0  – Saturday 18 August 12.30pm

We asked Jonathan Drape-Comyn to give us his match ratings after this afternoon’s match.

Newcastle drawing 0-0 down in Wales, almost snatching a victory with THAT penalty in the 96th minute.

Dubravka – 7. I didn’t make the game last week but heard that Dubravka’s distribution wasn’t great and that was certainly the case again today. Still looks solid when it comes to keeping the ball out of the net though.

Manquillo – 3. All over the place! ‘Really poor’ is probably being generous but he must improve. Was perhaps a tad lucky to still be on the pitch after giving away so many fouls. The difference between him and Yedlin is staggering.

Clark – 7. Had a decent game. Not much to say about the two centre halves as I thought they looked alright. Most of Cardiff’s play came down the flanks… namely through Josh Murphy.

Lascelles – 7. Gave away a few needless free kicks throughout the game but still looked ok next to Clark and kept a clean sheet.

Dummett – 6. Did as you’d expect but offered absolutely nothing going forward. This isn’t a surprise but I thought today he made very little attempt at all to cross the halfway line. Maybe that came from Rafa? But especially when Yedlin is out injured, Dummett HAS to do more going forward if Newcastle are to be any sort of threat.

Diame – 6. Certainly not the same Diame as we saw for most of the second half of last season. However, can’t fault him for a lack of effort as he put himself about and broke up play quite often. Not great on the ball though, although neither was anyone else apart from Shelvey.

Shelvey – 7. Newcastle’s best player and biggest threat by a clear distance. The only Newcastle player who wasn’t abysmal in possession today. Madness that he didn’t take the free-kick in the last minute… Shelvey, or the captain, should be taking control of situations like that.

Ritchie – 6. Alongside Shelvey was one of the better performers but still did not do enough in terms of creativity going forward.

Kenedy – 2. No beating around the bush that he should have had a red card after watching it back. I just read that he didn’t complete a pass in the first half and was the first PL to do so since 2010! Staggering. I am not going to fault him for his effort at all, (which is why he gets a 2 and not a zero or one). However, that was probably one of the worst individual displays I have ever seen from a Newcastle player. I don’t think many could disagree with me on that one! Nor do I think Kenedy would disagree either!

Perez – 4. Missed a great chance… let himself down with poor first touch on quite a few occasions. Was rightfully hooked off for Muto later in the game.

Joselu – 6. I actually thought he did ok again, not great, but ok. He obviously didn’t do anything spectacular but did as good as you’d expect. I don’t think he should have started the game, it should have been Rondon for me.

SUBS:

Hayden – 1. Looked like a player who didn’t want to be out there playing for Newcastle United. Even before his red card, he made quite a few silly fouls. Jamie Sterry may be Newcastle’s only fit right back come next weekend’s game against Chelsea and Eden Hazard. Having watched the tackle back again, I don’t think it was a red card but it was a bad tackle, no complaints though considering Kenedy should have definitely seen red.

Murphy – 6. Tell you what, maybe we signed the wrong Murphy? Difficult for Jacob coming on at right back, and he didn’t do anything wrong at all… although Josh gave both Manquillo and Hayden the run around all game. Looked far more comfortable at right back out of the three.

Muto – 5. Didn’t do anything at all when he came on, except lose possession a couple of times.

  • MYOFB

About right. I’d give the team 4/10 overall. More bad performances than good. Incredibly poor show by Kenedy. Not sure I’ve seen much worse in a Newcastle shirt. Hoping it’s out of his system. And hoping there isn’t retrospective action on the foul

    • Kenny

3 match ban coming his way.

      • WildBill

I think so. Can’t see him escaping punishment. Seeing he can’t play against Chelsea anyway it will be a while before he plays again (should it happen) at least a month.

        • ToonTom

Chelsea will still count as one of the three games though, surely?

          • WildBill

Don’t know mate, I’m just assuming. Just seems silly to ban someone from playing in a game he wasn’t eligible to play in anyway.

  • Peaky

Makes you wish for the days of Gouffran….at least he had a goal in him…

    • Kenny

      No !

  • panther

In defence of Kenedy, he will never play that poorly again, just a shame it was this game when the 3 points were waiting to be taken, Perez in the first half had some lovely touches, but got more frustrated as the game went on, manquillo, hes not even a footballer, Sterry should have played or a traffic cone, and Diame looks to be reverting to type which is worrying as we sold our talented backup for virtually no profit, wondering if somethings happening with Rafa and Ritchie, again he takes off our most hard working player and the only one who can cross, we looked to settle more with 10 men, started playing, still not sure why Joselu was intent on starting 90% of Cardiffs attacks for them, only plus is Murphy got game time, I like him, and shelvey positioning down to ten, he cut a lot out apart from that good game, cheers Mike you fat c***

    • Andy Mac

“In defence of Kenedy, he will never play that poorly again” I’m not so sure. I’m wondering if his attitude has changed from last season ? Seems to think he’s Billy BB ?

    • Billmag

      Think Matty missed Yedlin today.

  • Kenny

Rafa will be txting Arriva for the Chelsea match, Stagecoach do not have enough
    buses

    • Peaky

      Think he might go global….Greyhound….

      • Kenny

Wonder were the Rats fukwits are 🐁

        • Peaky

Imagine….just imagine…..been stuck on a bus all the way home from Cardiff with Mad Monkfish…..Ben Jones will be alright with his colouring book and crayons a drink of milk then a couple of hours sleep….

          • Kenny

bet he bought a blow up sheep

  • Mrkgw

Well, there”s Mitro and Ings on the scoresheet. And Rafa said that Mitro wasn’t a good fit? Based upon that performance today vs Cardiff, is Rafa really such a good judge?

    • Mrkgw

Gayle scores now. And meanwhile Rondon sits on the bench to accomodate a bloke who can’t score. Great eh.

    • Danimal

Mitro-wise, I’m more pi55ed off that Bryan, who we were meant to be getting from Bristol City, made the goal. And I didn’t even know Ings had joined Southampton. Rafa wouldn’t have been allowed to sign either, good judge or not.

      • nufcslf

More to the point. Fatty is the tit here, not Rafa. Today’s team and decisions were odd, but I hope it is to show the fat c**t what a total moron he really is and what Rafa has been left with. Who really knows? and glad I wouldn’t waste my time and money finding out going to matches.

        • Salty

To be fair it wasn’t Ashley who chased Rondon all summer then gave him zero minutes today in what was our most winnable games. Love Rafa but he makes some bizarre decisions

  • Foggy

Kenedy was absolute disgrace. Deserves a 3 match ban . Give him six because playing like that we won’t miss him. Easy to see why Chelsea couldn’t care less about shipping him out. Looks like he may be a one trick pony on today’s performance. Shocking decision by Rafa to let him take the penalty given he was so bad all day. Maybe one of the worst games I have ever seen by a Newcastle player and thats saying something.

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

hopefully seeing manquillo awful and out of shape for 90 minutes today will finally shut up the “Yedlin’s not good enough” crowd. The difference between the two has never been more apparent.

    • Mrkgw

Yes, and what about the Mitrovic isn’t good enough brigade? Second game and he scores vs Spurs. Rafa needs to re-visit an opticians.

      • glassjawsh-got-banned

I don’t think Rafa would tell you Mitro isn’t good enough for the PL. I just don’t think Mitro does enough of the things that Rafa likes from a CF (like track back).

        • Mrkgw

Guess so but on evidence of his persistence with Hoss, it would seem that he favours a CF that doesn’t score. Really bizarre things from Rafa in my opinion.

    • Kenny

      Yedlin was badly missed today

    • Foggy

Just because Manquillo was sh!te, doesn’t make Yedlin himself a better player. You understand that, don’t you?

      • Milburn_Taylor

Yedlin would have sorted Murphy out

        • Foggy

I’m not saying Yedlin wouldn’t have done better.

      • glassjawsh-got-banned

manquilo is a $h!t player, Yedlin is not a $h!t player, by the transitive property of not being an idiot, Yedlin>Manquilo. pretty simple stuff

        • Foggy

You completely miss the point. Never mind.

    • mentalman

We’d have lost the game had yedlin been playing

      • glassjawsh-got-banned

thank you for expediently identifying yourself as someone who has no idea what they are talking about

    • Clarko

Manquillo being ‘awful’ doesn’t make Yedlin ‘good enough’…

      • Kenny

here we go, Professor fukwit has arrived

        • Clarko

          Yeah, you people hate logic.

        • Wezza

          Just block the troll.

  • Kenny

Kenedy will have learnt a less today
He’s no Ronaldo so don’t try & win a game by yourself

    • Monkseaton Magpies

Agree he looked an angry man today for some reason and was not a team player. Just got back a great trip yet again. The only player who looked like scoring was Perez from both teams and Rafa took him off.

      • Come&TakeIt1836

The real issue we’ve both noted is the lack of squad cover in the fullbacks and injury to Lejuene and it is affecting the balance of the squad. Without much play out from the back, everyone else has seemed to have to default their positioning and focus further back on the pitch. It has left the wingers isolated and Kenedy did not react well to that change (understatement). Perez and Joselu ended up with almost no service except long balls from Shelvey. But I think the core issue is really on the back line. The rest are symptoms possibly further impacted by off days.

  • Peaky

FFS is this Final Score or Loose Women……??

    • Danimal

      Great stuff.

    • Milburn_Taylor

i now need blue pills with loose women

    • GlasgowMag

Supporting this club is like watching a bad episode of Jeremy Kyle your watching and you can’t believe your eyes and then it gets worse!!😂😂

  • Milburn_Taylor

why was Rondon left on the bench when we never looked like scoring ?

    • nufcslf

My thoughts exactly. Benitez got this all wrong, unless he really is letting fatty see what a sh*t club he is running and where it belongs.

      • fistsofsteel2

That almost sounds like Rafa is deliberately throwing games to make a point. I hope not.
Seriously can’t understand Joselu being in the 1st 11…….can anybody explain it?

        • Come&TakeIt1836

He scored last week (and generally had a good game) and Rafa was hoping for a repeat… that is my guess at least. Since he was nothing more than a willing worker this week, I’ll guess he is replaced next week.

He would have been subbed off around the 65th minute this week but it was pushed back by the Manquillo sub to be the final sub which then was adjusted again into not happening at all by the red card to Hayden… that is also a guess on my part.

    • Andy Mac

I could be wrong but I think its another case of Rafa’s misplaced loyalty ?

    • fistsofsteel2

….because Rafa obviously thinks Joselu is a constant threat to the opposition, and frightens defenders.
      Forgive my sarcasm.

  • GlasgowMag

I’m struggling to find where the 2 came from I was also struggling to find 1 myself!!! Hayden’s body language when he (eventually) came on was shocking reminded me of Dyer/Jenas in their prime if us bad Northerners are holding back your potential/ career back I will give you your bus fare home if you want!!!

    • Andy Mac

I mentioned it earlier. Yet Rafa’s saying he’ll let him have extra time off but thats not what he wants. He didnt play much last season and when he did he wasnt good enough. Get him a loan to somewhere doon South and promote Longstaffe ?

    • fistsofsteel2

Agreed! Hayden didn’t look happy at all. He clearly wants away. We have other players who could come on. Bad substitution by Rafa.

The thing is, I think we should be ok……but Rafa has to start picking the right players – some of his choices are, frankly, baffling; and he has to be more flexible with tactics, ie; not giving the likes of Cardiff the same respect as Man City – some teams need to be attacked instead of hanging in and hoping to nick a win, or a point.

      • Mike Adam

        Exactly!!!

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

Fulhum getting absolutely clubbed at spurs. Might be another year where we are saved by other teams somehow managing to be even worse.

    • Milburn_Taylor

our only hope is that three other teams are worse than we are

    • Peaky

Yes,we are at that stage after only 2 games….sad…

      • Kenny

        wait until after 5

    • Wezza

And people may say money doesn’t buy success but it at least show some ambition to compete and not just survive every year so the owner can take in millions. Just drove past the training ground and all those be we houses halt any kind of extension to the facilities. How much money he has made is obscene. Asset stripping.

  • Peaky

Warnock & Steve Bruce still look like “female” prison wardens from Cell Block H….

  • Peaky

On a happier note Ginger Elvis’s lot got absolutely mullered by the Baggies today……how that drunken idiot is still in football management is a bigger mystery than the Loch Ness monster…

    • Kenny

P45 coming his way in a couple of months

      • Andy Mac

        Weeks maybe ?

        • HarryHype59

          Days!

    • Wezza

      Seems clubs never learn!

  • robbersdog

Gayle and Mitrovic both scored today, just to make us all feel a bit worse. Time to put Rondon into the team, and give him an extended run. Maybe Muto too. No point in bringing these guys in if it’s just going to be last season’s team. We need some new blood – urgently.

  • Leicester Mag

No one warranted 6s or 7s God awful in every aspect.

  • Michael

Kennedy was great last week but I said after the spuds game I wouldn’t start him today. Never fancies it away and to let him take that penalty was nothing short of criminal. They were patting him on the back after he missed it was a kick in the balls he needed.

  • Carverlier football

Think you’re a bit generous on some of those – Dubravka put us under pressure a few times and didn’t make any saves so no idea where that 7 came from, and our entire midfield was out-battled and gave the ball away constantly – I’m not saying Perez’s 4 is too far off but he was no worse than Ritchie, Diame, Joselu, etc. The centre backs were the only ones who merited a 6 at best

  • Billmag

Wish someone could tell me why the modern goalkeepers persist in kicking the ball out to the wings because 9 times out 10 the ball goes out, what’s happened to kicking it down the middle 2 games played and Dub’s kicked it into touch a few times already.

    • fistsofsteel2

Good point – I’m sure we’re not the only ones annoyed with that tactic.

    • thewildchimp

Less chance for a dangerous counterattack. Just a lack of technically gifted players in the middle, really. We have a single player that can reliably hold the ball up, Shelvey, sometimes Kenedy – when he isn’t trying to dribble past three.

  • Tony English

Some of the comments regarding Kenedy are seriously OTT, calling him a disgrace and a one trick pony etc, the lads had one very (very) poor game.

He can’t be a world beater who we should have signed permanently one week, and a donkey the next. I reckon he feels rougher than us tonight.

    • fistsofsteel2

I agree. Fair play he had a terrible game, but see my comment above.

  • fistsofsteel2

Let’s just hope that was a one off for Kenedy. Even the best can have a ‘mare.
But seriously, somebody should have stepped up – after the game he’d had, and stopped him taking the pen.
And – why didn’t Rafa sub him before it even got to that point……it was obvious to everybody the kid wasn’t having one of his better days.

  • fistsofsteel2

I think the trouble with Kenedy is immaturity. He holds the ball too long in easy positions…….seeming to want to dribble around players on the halfway line etc. He needs to learn to move the ball quicker in midfield and save the dribbling / going past players when it’s a threat in the final third.
If you’re reading Kenedy – don’t put yourself under so much pressure to impress…..which you seem guilty of. Play for your team mates and save the tricks for when they can count, and hurt the opposition. Put today behind you….but learn from it.

    • fistsofsteel2

Despite this, I think it’s important Rafa starts him next game. Dropping him would dent his confidence totally – then again it might force him to re-focus. What do people think? Should he start next week, or be dropped?

      • Billmag

He couldn’t play next week anyway because we play Chelsea mate.

        • fistsofsteel2

oops….cheers mate. Forgot about that rule.

          • Damon Horner

Agree with all you’ve said but he could also clock up a suspension depending on what the refs report says.

  • Monkseaton Magpies

Perez was the only player who caused Cardiff any problems and was very unlucky not to score with his second attempt as the Keeper did not no anything about it. The only player on both teams who looked likely to score. Should never have been taken off as Kenedy had a stinker and him not Perez or Ritchie should have stayed on. You hate Perez for some reason. Will be interesting to see what marks all the papers give Perez in the morning but doubt there will be any fours.

    • Wor Lass

My thoughts on Perez, exactly. He had two decent efforts on target – the only two “real” chances we had in the game. Kenedy will be having nightmares about his game and definitely should have been hooked.

  • Philippines

Not reasonable to score Muto. He had hardly any balls delivered to him.

  • fistsofsteel2

    Rafa off to China……..?

    • HarryHype59

      Or West Ham.

  • LEE

Kennedy had a poor game, but jesus, Manquillio got roasted time after time, and didn’t seem to get any help from Ritchie or Lascelles, and to top it off is replaced by a player who did not want to be on the pitch, so got red carded.

but all that pales into insignificance by the mistakes Rafa made,
Ki Schar Rondon all have prem experience, but left out, yet all better than players in front of them.
Perez is. it and never will be a no 10 type player, he is a CF who uses pace.
Rafa needs to wake up, and stop using match day to have a dig at Ashley.

  • HarryHype59

Mbemba would have been a better bet at right back today as would Mbabu. What ever happened to them?

  • Wor Lass

I disagree with the 4 for Perez (he was our only threat) and I think you`re a bit generous to Dubravka. First player off today should have been Manquillo – before he was injured – closely followed by Kenedy. Hazard, Willian and Morata will have a field day next week.

  • Jimbo Dixon

Josh Murphy had a good game but up against Manquillo I think any winger would, bit harsh to say we have bought the wrong brother, Jacob looked decent when he came on.
