Cardiff 0 Newcastle 0  – Saturday 18 August 12.30pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle grabbing a 0-0 draw with 10 men after a desperate 96 minutes.

Last weekend Kenedy wasted a one on one with the keeper that could have won at least a point, today he topped off a woeful 96 minutes with a feeble penalty.

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“Kenedy a hugely frustrating afternoon and I have seen him play better, but why is he even stepping up for that in the first place.

“Just having to think about how 0-0 in the circumstances with the fixtures we have coming up is not a disaster, but that was a big chance missed no doubt.

“A sickener.”

Ben Cooper:

“Last seasons tactics of ‘make them think we are rubbish then take the points late on’ almost paid off for Rafa in this most dreadful of matches.

“A few controversial incidents can’t hide that this was awful stuff and anyone who finishes below Cardiff this season will be relegated.

“I don’t think that will be us, but we have to play better than this or go down.

“Even the clean sheet didn’t mean the defence played well, I thought we were lame all over the pitch today.

“No one more so than Kenedy who had a rotten game and his last second penalty miss should have been avoided. He may well be the designated penalty taker but he was not in a position to take it.

“It was rubbish, he was rubbish, the referee was rubbish, the match was rubbish. 0-0 makes it sound better than it was. They should have called it off yesterday and taken a point each.”

David Punton:

“A really poor display capped by an astonishing waste of a penalty with the the very last kick of the game.

“Some of our fans were up at 3am to travel down to see that. My sympathies.

“Newcastle weren’t great here, that’s putting it mildly, so the fact that a gilt edged chance came along to snatch all three points was as astonishing as it was welcome, especially against Neil Warnock.

“Up steps the boy from Brazil and the chance to get a thoroughly undeserved win went begging. Insert your own expletives here!

“I am amazed Kenedy was taking it. He’s felt the pressure, after a poor all round performance that could yet see him on the end of an FA charge.

“The best thing I can say is that we all know Rafa likes to grind out the points and that was on full show today.

“A red card for Hayden made it all the more tricky. I’d have settled for a point but we’ve definitely looked a gift horse in the mouth.

“A point on the road is the positive to take. 39 more needed.”

Toon Bano:

“I’ve just about calmed down to write this but I can’t remember a game that enraged me as much as that.

“The referee was a total disgrace. He didn’t give us one single throw in and that Arter assault was a total joke. The fact he even gave the penalty was a shock.

“The performance was abysmal.

“Kenedy should not have been anywhere near that penalty. That’s one of the worst performances I’ve seen from a player and his free kick before, should have been enough evidence to say he wasn’t gonna score.

“I couldnt believe it at the time and still can’t.

“Raging!!! Absolutely raging.”

Jamie Swan:

“Going to say it like it was. Pure garbage all over the park from the lads today and the only positive I can really say is we got our first point of the season.

“Manquillo is up there with the worst players ever to pull on a black and white shirt. Thought it was a favour when he took the opportunity to go off injured, that was before Hayden who clearly doesn’t want to be here, chopped his way to a dubious red.

“Rafa doesn’t get away without criticism either mind, as Rondon and Muto should have started, or at least one of them, and Rafa should know that away from home against a game newly promoted team that Manquillo would be targeted.

“I do love Rafa, and in his defence he wanted new full backs, but others knew best.

“Worrying and a difficult watch and Cardiff who are lacking real quality, were always in it. In fact if Zahore didn’t have a head like a 50p piece they would have had a goal or two.

Mention for Kenedy, as he was shocking all game and then to ask him to take a spot kick on 95 minutes to win it – was obvious what was going to happen. On top of that you can guarantee he will be getting a retro 3 match ban.

“I couldn’t give any player barring Dubravka more than 5 out of 10.

“Apart from that it was mint.”

Nat Seaton:

“Having travelled over 300 miles to watch it, I want to try to say something positive about the game – we got a point…”

  • Ram Kishore

Our team and players have never been good enough for penalties.
Now the Carabao cup goes for a penalty shootout after a 90 minute draw..

  • Kenny

2nd match in and the alarm bells are already ringing

    • Ken

Yup but at least we have 3 easy games coming up

    • Martin

Err yes like last season when we finished 10th and the season before when we were promoted.

  • Philippines

There must be many shaking their heads in disbelief at this performance.

  • Big Hairy Man

The lack of Premier League quality in almost every area was laid bare for all to see. You get what you pay for.

    • WildBill

True. Complete drek. Fulham got what they paid for as well. Mitrovic just scored vs Spurs.

      • glassjawsh-got-banned

and still got clobbered (and are looking up at us in the table)

      • Dooka

So did joselu, what’s your point

  • mentalman

Out thought by warnock and out played by typical warnock players.

Rafa needs to start working on a plan b

    • robbersdog

How was Rafa out-thought by Warnock? Cardiff were the home team, and they didn’t manage to win.

We got an away draw; it’s not the end of the world.

      • HarryHype59

Did you watch this match? Cardiff are dreadful, but still bossed the match. Worried? You should be.

        • robbersdog

Yeah, I did watch the match, and neither team ‘bossed’ it.

          • HarryHype59

They had numerous chances to win this match. Fortunately their main striker is on par with the Hoss. Let’s be objective they were poor but we were even worse.

      • fistsofsteel2

You forget to mention we only got the draw because of Rafa’s tactical genius. Word!

  • HarryHype59

Fatman has been playing “Jenga” with this team every window since promotion. The tower has collapsed after he took £25m out in the last window. We have no full back cover due to Fatty’s obsession with stream lining the squad. A relegation battle is now underway!

    • Kneebotherm8

We’ve got a right back and a left back,we’ve also got one guy who covers for them both in Manquillo…….Yedlins injured and now Manquillo………that leaves one fit fullback at the club……great planning squad wise…….thanks Mike…….at least you’re money’s safe in the bank…….gambler to the last….

  • Jate Legend

I was at the game and the match and performance was not as bad as what it is being made out in the media and regurgitated on here. We were solid at the back and they barely had any chances. Clark and Lascelles both played well. Manquillo did have a shocker, but when we were down to our 3rd choice right back we did well until the sending off, which seemed harsh. The ref gave decision after decision to Cardiff in the first half and up to the red, after which he tried to even things up a bit. Kenedy didn’t play well, but he was also marked out the game by Cardiff – they were always going to do a mark job on him or Jonjo. Kenedy got swarmed everytime he got near it, so Jonjo had more time on the ball and did OK with his distribution. The biggest negative was up front. Perez did a disappearing act and Joselu got absolutely nothing out of their centre backs all game – zero. Getting a draw, away, with a man down for half an hour, and nearly winning it at the death, when several of the team were not playing well was decent. But Rafa has to play Rondon next week, and Kenedy will benefit from not being able to play against his parent club by having a week off to sort his head out – he did look overly hesitant again this week.

    • SuperDesHamilton

      It was rubbish

    • HarryHype59

I watched it on Sky. That was a poor performance! A marginally better team would have put three past us!

  • SuperDesHamilton

Has Leazes been on yet to pull apart every writers name yet?

  • SuperDesHamilton

Des Hamilton was better then Manquillo. How this bloke played for big clubs like Athleti & Liverpool I’ll never know

    • HarryHype59

He was poor for the Makems as well. He must have a great agent.

      • SuperDesHamilton

Without a doubt, not what you know it’s who you know

  • fistsofsteel2

Great to see Rafa keeping faith in Joselu – he obviously knows what he’s doing. In Rafa we trust.

  • fistsofsteel2

Nice to see Mitrovich score today………but pleased Rafa prefers strikers who don’t score, can’t score, and won’t score. Nice tactical team choice today by Rafa – a man who can’t quit because he’ll have to pay money back to the club; but if he’s sacked could walk away with a nice little pay off. Nice tactical team choice today by Rafa – …..

    • glassjawsh-got-banned

nice that you said the same stupid thing 3 different times.

      • fistsofsteel2

….nice to watch things flying over your head.

    • Billmag

      Joselu – 1 goal, Mitrovic- 1 goal.

  • Down Under Mag

Could have had 3 players sent off had the ref been aware and non-biased. From the off he targetted newcastle players and any 50-50 decisions all seemed to go Cardiffs way…produced a sloppy game that favoured Cardiff all day. Our players though were all out of sorts, Shelvey couldn’t beat the first man on set pieces, Kenedy seemed to be channeling his inner Ben Arfa thinking he had to take on the entire Cardiff side every time he touched the ball (and should have been red carded for a petulant kick), Ritchie couldn’t string any passes together and we were exposed at the back as Rafa tried desperately to re-jig his defence because of injuries and not havign enough squad depth. Haydens red was harsh but when he saw red for that then the Cardiff one was just as bad. Can’t say i’m gutted by the penalty miss as we didn’t deserve all 3 points. One thing is for sure, Rafa needs to get Rondon, Muto, Shar, Ki and Fernandez up to fitness and quick because right now that is about the only thing that can boost the side right now. I am sure the players thought it was in the bag and didn’t really get themselves up for the game, only explanation. Also, yes Mitro scored for Fulham but after two games we are still ahead of Fulham in the league (and it wouldn’t have mattered who was up front against Cardiff, they still wouldn’t have scored because we created nothing for them to score from!).

    • Peter C

Pretty spot on assessment of the whole game and afternoon. If we don’t improve pretty quickly, we’re in deep trouble.

Newcastle, rubbish, Cardiff rubbish, and as usually, indifferent and inconsistent refereeing, by the dismal Craig Pawson.

Hopefully this is the nadir of the entire season, if not, it’s back to the Championship, we will go.

  • fistsofsteel2

Was surprised Joselu wasn’t fighting with Kenedy to take the penalty…….after all, he’s our main man, Rafa’s no.1, and just loves scoring goals.

  • Cuh

A Championship match played in the prem

Rafa looking quite clueless, playing Hayden at Right back, then Murphy, but taking Ritchie off… Ritchie who offers so much support tracking back?

And I know its not the window he wanted, but at this point, wouldnt it be wise to play a Jamie Sterry? Someone who at least is comfortable at that position. He went into that match with no back up wing back. Centre backs all over the place.

Haidara, Lazaar, Anita, Gamez and Mbabu especially. Perhaps if he hadn’t sold these players without actual replacements lined up… And wasnt currently forcing Sterry out, maybe we would have at least one back up wing back for the season?

  • Alreet

Bad day at the office. We might have woree ones but not many. Hell we were beat by some tripe last season.

Cardif will be hard to beat at home but we were terrible. There will be better days ahead.

Rindon and muto have to start against chelsea.
