There have been renewed claims of Newcastle interest in signing Andros Townsend, since last season ended.

Then on Sunday morning there were newspaper claims (see below) of Newcastle being in talks with Crystal Palace.

This report claimed that Palace were asking for a more realistic (in today’s market!) £18m for the winger, rather than the £30m price tag that had been previously circulating.

Now, Sky Sports have confirmed that there has indeed been a Newcastle United approach for the winger.

Sky Sports presenter (and Newcastle fan) Pete Graves states that he ‘Can confirm that Newcastle United have made initial enquiries to Crystal Palace over the signing of Andros Townsend.’

The winger had the most productive spell of his career when at Newcastle, despite playing in a team at the bottom, Townsend managed four goals and two assists despite only 12 PL starts back in 2015/16.

That spell included helping NUFC to a final six game undefeated run under Rafa Benitez at the end of that season, Newcastle getting three wins and three draws, including a 5-1 demolition of Spurs, as well as a draw away at Liverpool after being two goals down, plus a draw at home against Man City after falling a goal behind.

Pete Graves says Rafa is still a ‘big admirer’ and Andros Townsend ‘enjoyed his time’ at Newcastle – but still ‘some way to go’ on a transfer being agreed.

Pete Graves:

“Can confirm that Newcastle United have made initial enquiries to Crystal Palace over the signing of Andros Townsend.

“The player was a huge success during his time on Tyneside.

“Rafa remains a big admirer.

“Andros enjoyed his time in B&W… but some way to go.”

Keith Downie who covers NUFC for Sky Sports:

“We’re told Newcastle want to bring Andros Townsend back to the club.

“Initial talks have taken place with Crystal Palace – but as yet no bid.”

The Mag – Earlier today (Sunday 1 July 2018):

Sunday morning brings reports that Newcastle United are (allegedly) in talks with Crystal Palace to buy back Andros Townsend.

Thursday brought surprise news, from a media source that is usually very good (see below), that Newcastle were talking to two Championship clubs about the possible sale of Matt Ritchie.

That report from The Telegraph’s John Percy said that Newcastle were believed to be willing to trade if either Middlesbrough or Stoke would pay £15m.

Today’s story sees claims that Andros Townsend could be available for around £18m, more realistic than the £30m figures previously rumoured.

This follow up transfer tale is from The Sun (don’t shoot this messenger…), so not exactly the best media when it comes to their strikerate success on NUFC transfers,

However, I remember when there was previous talk of Andros Townsend coming back to St James Park, fans were fancying the idea of him on one side and Ritchie on the other.

So if there is any substance to these in and out transfer claims, I think Newcastle supporters would be asking why can’t we have both?

With so far no apparent attempt to sign Kenedy, Newcastle need a new winger/wide man anyway, as neither Atsu or Murphy can be seen as first eleven regulars at this moment in time.

So selling Ritchie to fund Andros Townsend would be more of a one step forward and most of one backwards.

Comparing the two, I think Townsend is a more attacking winger who can create something out of nothing, a little like Kenedy, whereas Ritchie is more of your dependable hard working winger/wide man who doesn’t really have the pace/trickery to unlock defences on a regular basis.

What we do know is that Ritchie is one of Newcastle’s better players, so always risky to trade in any of them.

Hopefully we well see (incoming) transfer business pick up after Ki Sung-Yueng’s arrival on Friday.

The Mag – 28 June 2018:

It might take some believing for many Newcastle United fans but the club have been in talks with two clubs to sell Matt Ritchie.

If this was from usual ‘sources’ then it would be easy to dismiss but the story comes from John Percy at The Telegraph and he has a very good record with his information on both transfer and other stories, including past ones regarding Newcastle United.

He states as fact that Newcastle have held talks with both Stoke and Middlesbrough regarding the sale of Matt Ritchie.

Percy states that Newcastle are considering letting the winger go if one of them is willing to pay £15m.

It would be a shock departure for NUFC fans and the presumption would surely be that a sale would only happen IF Rafa Benitez was happy for it to take place and IF he believed he would get that cash and be able to use it towards his own targets.

John Percy says Bournemouth are also interested in taking Matt Ritchie back and indeed a story in recent days claimed a possible swap deal could be on for Cherries striker Josh King.

Championship clubs are flexing their financial muscles these days and last summer Wolves paid £16m for a player, whilst Middlesbrough shelled out £15m on striker Britt Assombalonga.

Matt Ritchie turns 29 in September so bean counters would maybe see £15m as a good price to sell at but as always, it depends on what then happens to the money at Newcastle United.

Easy to see why Championship clubs would fancy taking him, as when Bournemouth got promotion in 2014/15 the winger got 15 goals and 17 assists, whilst with Newcastle it was 12 goals and 7 assists in 2016/17.

Stoke and Middlesbrough have, unlike Newcastle, already been spending relatively significant money and this coming season the two clubs will receive significant parachute payments – Stoke will bank over £41m and Boro just over £34m.

As for Rafa Benitez, John Percy says that he ‘open-minded’ about letting Matt Ritchie go and that it will revolve around what he feels is needs in terms of signing priorities for himself.

It is worth pointing out that whilst Ritchie is popular with Newcastle fans, in the top tier with Bournemouth his figures dropped to 4 goals and 6 assists and then 3 goals and 5 assists for Newcastle in the Premier League last season.

  • Monkseaton Magpies

Shows that there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes and that players should arrive in the next few weeks. However would be gutted to see Ritchie go as need to keep him for his work rate.

    • Salty

The Ki deal is more indicative of Work behind the scenes. Next deal could be low profile, I think Ings is on the radar if reasonably priced.
Id also prefer to keep Ritchie with Townsend and see if we can move Atsu and lazaar out

      • Monkseaton Magpies

Agree would off load Atsu and another five fringe players and get Townsend and Kenedy, keep Ritchie, get a striker, a full back and a goal scoring midfield player.

        • Brian Standen

I would keep Atsu regardless. Strength in depth is needed

        • nufcslf

Dream on. Never going to happen. Money in fatty’s pocket for the sale of Atsu, but not a chance of player’s coming in. This off season’s two cheap signings have already happened.

      • Tony English

With Ki and Ings there will be a massive slump in the iron-on-letter business on Tyneside.

Don’t be surprised to see us approach Borussia Dortmund with bids for Jakub Błaszczykowski or Sokratis Papastathopoulos to balance the cash registers.

    • nufcslf

Work going on in the background, what shile of pite. Nothing will happen from here on, other than sales.

  • SuperDesHamilton

Available for £18mil…so we’ll offer much less with £10 mil release

    • Dillon Tovak

Yeah £10.5m with that £10m release clause most likely.

  • Dillon Tovak

Initial enquiries just means an email saying can we have him on loan.

  • Peaky

Why is it when I hear this French wonder kid’s name mentioned I burst into “MMMbop” by Hanson ???

  • Lhc#Freetommyrobinson

To late now but should of went for David Brooks, going to be some player. Don’t see what these so called scouts do at nufc, it’s easy to see a talent.

    • SuperDesHamilton

But it’s easier getting blood from a stone then getting fatty to sanction a signing

      • Lhc#Freetommyrobinson

He was available for 10 million plus add on’s, I’ve watched him closely every time sheff utd played on sky. If I can see it surely nufc can see it or how about they give me a job as a scout I’d love to quit the day job and get some easy money.

        • SuperDesHamilton

Yeah it’s all well scouting players it’s just down to the fat owner paying

          • Lhc#Freetommyrobinson

The point is tho I honestly don’t think they see it and don’t have a good eye for upcoming talent.

      • Leazes.

Don’t respond to the racist troll mate!

        • SuperDesHamilton

          He’s absolutely thick as f**k

          • Lhc#Freetommyrobinson

Sheep. Your so far up leazes it’s popping out of his mouth.

          • SuperDesHamilton

No you generally don’t grasp the easiest of things, a couldn’t care less about your political opinions but I’m saying you can scout anyone you want but it means nothing if the owners and money men don’t bid. Why is that hard to understand?

          • Lhc#Freetommyrobinson

I mentioned david Brooks, he went for 10 million plus add on’s. We could have easily bought this lad but for some reason don’t seem to have an eye for good young talent. It’s got nothing to do with not spending money that we don’t buy lads like him. It’s a case of the scouting system is poor.

        • Lhc#Freetommyrobinson

Why didn’t you respond to my offer of meeting me this weekend? Is geordiegiants a racist troll as well then? As he agrees with my stance.

        • Lhc#Freetommyrobinson

Also were you bullied at school mate?

  • X,WHY,Y MAN.

We don’t want him at this club because he demonstrated in the past he has no honour or loyalty !

    • Brian Standen

I’m half with you on that to be fair – very good point

    • Wor Lass

      “We”?

      • X,WHY,Y MAN.

Okay, I don’t want him at this club, But does it really matter how it is worded ?, Because there will more than me who don’t want him back.

        • Wor Lass

          And plenty who do.

    • Lhc#Freetommyrobinson

      I agree.

    • Billmag

      Agreed.

    • mentalman

He demonstrated that he is ambitious isnt that something you want in a player

    • Ram Kishore

At that time he was actually challenging for the England squad .. then he didn’t act like he wanted to move desperately or gave interviews to let the club go..
Way better than players who begged for moves and telling us what to do like Sissoko..
Townsend left on mutually convenient manner without causing any fuzz

  • Steven05

I think I’m in the minority (and my brother will hate me for saying it) but I would love Townsend back

    • csh

I’d have him back too. No downsides to this deal as far as I can see, we’d be getting a player who knows the area, the manager rates him and would be determined to do well for the club. Get Kenedy for the opposite wing and a decent striker and I think we’d have the makings of a pretty strong side.

      • Tony English

I was at Stamford Bridge watching the 5-1 absolute battering under McClaren, possibly the most abject display I’ve ever seen.

Townsend scored a stunner at the death, but was also the only player who showed he cared that day.

He put his career above our basket case club, couldn’t blame him for leaving at the time. I’d have him back.

  • Rich Lawson

Kenedy is a better fit for the left wing and much younger and actually wants to play for us.

    • Clarko

Again, the plan is to swap Ritchie for Townsend and buy Kenedy.

      • Jate Legend

If that turns out to be true I think its a good strategy

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

        That`s a plan

      • Rich Lawson

That would be pretty good actually and you seem very certain of it ?

        • Clarko

I’m certain that it’s the plan.

        • Geordiegiants

He is a puretit. Like that’s going to happen.🤯

      • Geordiegiants

Don’t be sofuckin ridiculous you fuckindivy.
That is never going to happen, it would cost money.

        • Clarko

Money that ‘50% of the Championship clubs have’ according to you right?

          Dummy.

          • Geordiegiants

That why it’s not going to happen you Dime bar.

          • Clarko

            Doesn’t even make sense…

            What a complete f*****g moron.

    • Paul Smith

If we went down do you not think Kennedy would ask to leave us (especially if a Brazil place was on the line)?

      • Wezza

Yes but Townsend would leave yet again. I wouldn’t have him back.

  • Rich Lawson

That said, what’s the point in signing more wingers when we don’t have a centre forward to capitalise on the crosses ?

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

I`ve been saying that since Demba Ba left

      • Tony English

I think the ‘wingers’ he wants in the team are more ‘cut inside into space left by front man’s movement’ or ‘ghost in at the back post’ types, not ‘get down the wing and cross it’ merchants.

Not so much ‘wingers’ more ‘wide forwards’.

        • MichaelMaximusMoose

Doesn`t matter if we get Andros & Kenedy we need a striker

          • Tony English

We definitely DO need a striker, it won’t be a big target man though, it’ll be a nippy Andy Cole type he’s looking for with the way he want’s to play. If only they could unearth another Andy Cole.

          • Peaky

We need two strikers….three if I’m been honest but won’t ever happen.

          • glassjawsh-got-banned

            we won’t get one…

    • Jate Legend

Lots of shopping to do, without knowing how much is on the credit card. Do you buy the steak, or just make sure you don’t run out of pot noodles.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

Matt is one of the hardest working players in the Team but Andros is a step above him.
    we should have both

    • csh

Or show some ambition and get both?

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

ambition & Nufc under Ashley should never be mentioned

  • Jate Legend

In terms of quality its Kenedy Townsend Ritchie Murphy Atsu. I.e. I’d rather have kenedy even on loan than Andros. If we sign both great. We won’t do that though so this indicates to me no Kenedy. Also haweh man put the ball in the box as much as you want who is sticking it in the back if the net

    • Leazes.

What was it he called the first team years ago…’purple chip’ or something? meaning there’s a limited amount of players who get first team wages… probably the lowest of any club because he’s operating on the basis on no waste….. meaning if there’s a significant injury his 15th placed squad will be sucked into the mire again! There will be injuries this time around, we were very lucky last season.

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

We were at that, very, very lucky.
who can replace Lascelles or Jonjo add Lejeune, where is the cover for Dummy or Yedlin, Gayle or the Hoss
        the squad`s paper thin

        • Leazes.

You do know that Kevin and David Lee are targeting the chronicle comments site don’t you? They protect Ryder like the two musketeers except their swords are red thumbs.

        • SuperDesHamilton

We have a big squad well looks big, it’s propped up with shambolic players on 5 year contracts who’s agents work for Ashley

        • Paul Patterson

That’s why I asked you about getting Townsend in and keeping Ritchie. More the merrier..

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

            exactly but you know Fatso

  • Ba ba.

    Bring him home

  • Wezza

You can tell the season ticket deadline was renewed!

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

Aye, quality players are starting to emerge,
the Pigs PR team are upping the gears

      • Wezza

Does any other club use PR to appease/lie/fool the fans? I’d bet there isn’t. But we have too high expectations lol.

        • Leazes.

Doesn’t need PR to fool the fans he need’s PR to manipulate journalists who fool the fans…..that is the way it works.

          • Wezza

Ah yes, I should have included the press in this.

      • Peaky

One sentence there that says so much than one page….absolutely spot on.

    • Leazes.

Yes they sent a flyer through the post…. stuff them!

  • Soldier

if Townsend turns up at St James Park in a black & white strip i`ll believe he`s here
until then i don`t believe a word the mag or the chron print on players coming in

    • Geordiegiants

      He is a little shithouse.

  • pedrodelgardo

    Danny Ings

    • Peaky

Southampton favourites apparently….Hughes will have his career over in no time…

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

        Hughes knacks everyone`s career
        😂😂

        • Paul Patterson

          Including his own ..

          • Geordiegiants

Was going to write exactly that myself.

    • Soldier

if he is fit go for him

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

Just read an article that Fulham are reluctant to pay £20m for Mitro,
So there you have it and to date no other club has made an offer.

    • Billmag

He may end up at CP in a Townsend swap because I think they want rid of Benteke.

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

        could well happen

        • Geordiegiants

Let’s hope not Townsend is a little slink.

    • Geordiegiants

It’s surprising as listening to a lot of our fans he is a world class, premier league striker. It baffles me why they aren’t fighting over him.

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

        they won`t get £20m, that`s for sure

        • Geordiegiants

          £10/12 if lucky.

  • mentalman

Do palace not still owe us some money from buying townsend

  • Foggy

Hope not. Not worth anything close to 18 mill. 8Mill maybe.

  • Geordiegiants

What a pisstake, it’s blatant politics by Jabba, we are trying to sign Kenedy on the cheap, and he has released the statement to try and push them into selling, it a typical Jabba move. Townsend can go and fuckhimself for me.

    • Mark Potter

So the typical move is to release a statement about a right winger, who the media have linked with a return for the fourth window in a row, because that will impact the (secret?) move for a left winger that no-one in the media is talking about him joining, because there was no “typical move” statement about Ki, a central midfielder. Makes plenty of sense, not.

    • Albert Stubbins

I can’t get excited about signing a player who couldn’t get away quick enough once relegation had been confirmed. If Rafa didn’t want Sturridge because of the January snub then why the eagerness to get a deal done for the treacherous Townsend? I can’t believe Rafa would want him back to be honest.

  • Dillon Tovak

This has us selling Ritchie and “not being able to get Townsend over the line” written all over it.

  • Peaky

Spain looking a little lacking up front…..serves themselves right…..should have took The Hoss..
    😂😂
    🐴🐴

    • TheNutJob

if Rafa was Spain`s manager Hoss would have come off the bench & banged in the winner
      ⚽ 🏆 🐎
      😂😂

  • Tino11

Not 100% sure I want Townsend, he manages to keep good form for about half a
season (usually a month or 2 before the England squads are announced)
then seems to have moments when he has given up a bit. But in saying
that he is an improvement attacking wise than both Ritchie and Atsu, so
if he is willing to put 100% effort in all season he would be an upgrade and would be a welcome signing.
However I don’t think Ritchie should leave, Murphy needs a season out
on loan for a top end Championship Club and is not ready for a full
season in the Prem. We need strength in depth, we were very lucky with
injuries last season, we may not be this season. There is NO REAL REASON
why this club cannot afford to buy Townsend AND keep hold of Ritchie,
the Club/Ashley is getting enough TV money to more than cover this
seasons signings without selling off REGULAR first teamers like Ritchie.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

if Murphy`s not ready at 23 then he`s never going to be ready

      • Tino11

Perhaps not, but I think we should give him one more season to either prove it or decide we need to sell him.

        • MichaelMaximusMoose

he needs starts in the premiership, if he fails sell him

    • nufcslf

Rafa should get all of the £124m for the 10th place finish, that was free money. Not with fatty around, though.

      • Wezza

That TV money has already fallen into the MASH black hole! Now Rafa has to sell to buy. We won’t be breaking our transfer record, just bargain basement cheap deals whilst MA pocket the cash.

        • nufcslf

          Yip.

  • robbersdog

I’d prefer Kenedy, I’d still be happy with Townsend…but I know that we won’t be signing either of them.

    • TheNutJob

if Kenedy is around £20 Andros £18m, you would go for Kenedy wouldn`t you

      • Duh

Yes, no brainer. Townsend would be a decent signing but that would likely be a big chunk of the budget.

      • robbersdog

Yeah, Kenedy is younger and likely to get even better; Andros is good, but we’ve probably already seen the best of him.

  • TheNutJob

who`s reporting this, is it a reliable source like Ryder at the ronnie gill.
the Fat Gringo won`t be spending real dosh, there is no bid is there and until you see Newcastle bid X amount of pounds for a player this is all hypothetical
    🐖🐖🐖

  • Malcolm Fisher

Hope not, he is two yrs older and soon jumped ship when we were relegated. We rescued him once and that is enough, no second chances.

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

if the asking price is 18 million it may as well be 100 because fatty ain’t paying a nickel over 10 (and we’ll be lucky if he sanctions that much)

    • nufcslf

But will still sell Richie anyway and pocket that money, leaving no winger’s. Fatty’s dream come true.

  • TheNutJob

i hope Spain`s disaster doesn`t mean they`ll be coming for Rafa

    • Geordiegiants

They dont like him for some reason in Spain, he isn’t as highly thought of as he is in England.

      • TheNutJob

I think with those players Rafa would have won that game

        • Rich Lawson

Dunno,Russia didn’t just park that bus, they took the wheels off as well,Argies ,Portugal,Germany and now Spain out in days, love this world cup !

        • Mark Potter

Rafa would have preferred to play with the Russia “park the bus” team. They had effort and organisation.

          • Billmag

Well they couldn’t match Spain player for player yet still got through, suppose you wanted Russia to play KK style football.

        • Geordiegiants

          No doubt about it.

  • Scottie Chugger Dearden

He’s slowly becoming the new Bas Dost!

    • Gianfranco Shola

I’m thinking more Andy Carroll, that old bring him back home line has bored me to tears through many windows now, glad that ones went quiet actually

  • TheNutJob

i`ve got me wack on Croatia lads, they go down i`ll have to sell my Mitro Shirts on ebay

    • TheNutJob

1 doon after a minute, woe is me

      • Rich Lawson

But they’ve equalised, great watching all these big boys tumble,I’m still on with Belgium ew at 10/1

        • TheNutJob

I`m watching. i put a bundle on Brazil & my back up bet was Mexico at 66/1. they play each other next

  • robbersdog

PSG might have to sell Kylian Mbappe because of Financial Fair Play; do you think they’d accept £2m + Colback?

    • TheNutJob

we`ve just signed some 17 yr old kid, Ryder at the chron will have him down as the Toon`s Kylian Mbappe by Tuesday
      😂😂😂

  • Pc07

I wish this nonsense would stop. If hate to see this guy back, jumped ship at the first opportunity after we gave him a platform to revive his career. Seriously hope this one never happens

    • Albert Stubbins

      Is the correct answer.

  • MadMag83

So pay £18m for Judas Townsend and sell one of our better players for £15m? Utter madness. Townsend is a rat, he used us to enhance his chance of playing for England. Ritchie on the other hand, dropped a division to come and play for us, fights for the shirt, and doesn’t throw the towel in, unlike Andross Townsend.

    • Down Under Mag

I think given Townsend gave everything he could while he was here and the club showed no signs of the mass overhaul that was about to happen that summer it is not too hard to imagine some voices in his ear from agents and the like turning his head. If he comes back there will be question marks over him and he needs to be ready for that.

Rafa clearly rates him and while i’m sure if he had the choice he would keep Ritchie as well, but sadly he isn’t allowed to do that with this owner and needs to sell to buy…I suspect 2m quid will be a good deal to inject some extra pace into the side and I think he will suit Rafa’s tactics better than Ritchie which is why the deal is a possibility. I don’t care one way or the other if he comes here, as long as he works as hard as he did last time I will be happy….after all, he was one of the shining lights in that relegation side and no-one can say he didn’t try while so many of his teammates were dropping their heads… hopefully the Kenedy is still on the table otherwise it wouldn’t make sense getting rid of Ritchie.

      • MadMag83

I personally don’t think it’s a good deal. Players rarely have the same impact second time around, he impressed but it was hard not to stand out in such a lackluster side, especially when he was playing to raise his own profile. I’d take him on loan but I wouldn’t pay £18m, and i wouldn’t get rid of Ritchie.

I’d rather hear we were spending that sort of cash on a striker.

    • Lewis Fu

      Rafa and his pragmatic approach.

Townsend has got good deliveries. He seems to be more suited playing in a bigger stadium especially with wider space, making runs and deliver dangerous crosses.

I would hate to see Matt Ritchie leave the club, but if Townsend can take us up further, then we should set our emotions aside.

  • Mike

does anyone know how old Townsend is?
