Racing Club Lens have made an official announcement confirming that they have signed Massadio Haidara.

The 25 year old saw his Newcastle contract finally run out on Saturday.

Sunday saw reports claiming that NUFC free agents Haidara and Jesus Gamez were set to join Lens and Malaga respectively (see below).

Massadio Haidara only started 23 league matches during his five and a half years at St James Park and his last one was in September 2015.

Despite being totally frozen out of the first team picture, the left-back refused to move elsewhere for regular first team football as it would have meant a drop in wages.

One of the many signings who proved not good enough but preferred to stick it out until the very end of his Newcastle contract for the money, just like Marveaux, Obertan and others.

Last summer, Massadio Haidara was set to move  to St Etienne but the player eventually called it off because they wouldn’t match his NUFC wages.

“At the end of the contract in Newcastle, defender Massadio Haïdara signed a contract with the Racing Club Lens.

“We welcome him!”

The Mag – Sunday 1 July 2018:

Two unwanted Newcastle United players are now set to link up with new clubs.

The 30 June 2018 was the final day of the contracts of both Massadio Haidara and Jesus Gamez.

Haidara stuck it out for five and a half years, refusing to leave and play regular football but for less money.

Whilst Jesus Gamez was a bit of a mystery, he did have injury problems but Rafa only gave him three league starts in total over the course of his two year stay.

Gamez captained Malaga in both La Liga and the Champions League but is now set to return to a club in much diminished circumstances.

The Spanish media say he is expected to be confirmed shortly as a returning player at a club who finished rock bottom of La Liga last season and are now in the Spanish second tier.

Facing major financial problems as well, the 33 year old defender will be a welcome addition on a free.

As for Massadio Haidara, he is reported to have agreed a three year deal at Racing Club Lens.

The 25 year old defender joining a team who ended last season 14th in the French second tier.
