The scoreline might have read Porto 0 Newcastle 0 but nobody watching the game could quite work out how this had been the final result.

Nobody should get too carried away with any pre-season friendly result but when a game is as one-sided as this, there aren’t any great positives from Newcastle’s performance.

The Porto keeper didn’t have a save to make as it was all one way traffic.

Martin Dubravka making a handful of quality saves and then Darlow continuing that as a late sub.

Other than those two, it was only really some of the defensive play that could be praised as Newcastle somehow kept out the Portuguese league champions for the full 90 minutes.

Jamaal Lascelles and DeAndre Yedlin probably the pick, the latter topping his display with a clearance off the line when Dubravka was eventually beaten.

Unlike the first two friendlies, Rafa Benitez chose to pick a pretty much best eleven side to start the game, from those he had available on the night, no doubt acknowledging the better level of opposition.

Porto are a decent team but when your team create pretty much nothing going forward in an entire game, it is a bit depressing.

Both bar and  post also came to Newcastle’s rescue, as well as a linesman flagging on an offside goal.

Obviously we are waiting on Yoshinori Muto’s work permit being waved through and at least one more striker expected as Mitrovic’ move to Fulham is now agreed.

However, two weeks before the Premier League kicks off, seeing Joselu wandering aimlessly around (though the fact the service to him from the rest of the team was pretty much non-existent, has to be factored in), doesn’t do much to suggest we are going to hit the new season running.

Kenedy has been granted time away after his partner gave birth and obviously he is a miss – but even if Rafa does make some late progress in the transfer market, the pre-season training and games will already have been and gone.

Rafa Benitez admitted after the match that Porto should clearly have won after dominating the match and creating all the chances.

Newcastle got away with it on Saturday night to an extent and got a draw but we will need far far more than this going forward when we play Tottenham in 13 days time.

On a positive note, the team did look canny wearing the new second strip!

Rafa Benitez:

“I don’t care too much about the result, it’s only pre-season and it is good to have a clean sheet…but they created enough chances to win the game.

“Obviously you could see the difference between the team that is playing in the Super Cup next week.

“They are a team that’s really good in Europe and every week.

“So they are a top side and a team with new players and they have a learning process from last year.”

  • Paul Patterson

Expect a few of these types of performances this season, some we might get away with, some not so much . .

  • Wor Lass

Interviewed on Sky last night, Rafa seemed pretty emphatic about signing another striker. I wonder if he`s got Danny Ings in mind. If he`s fit he`d be a good buy.

    • Billmag

      Agreed.

    • Leazes.

He was on Carrs list ….. so possibly a Charnley target and is priced at around £25m. Rafa wont mind as hes off in 10 months anyway.

    • 1957

At £25m Ings would be a huge risk, he’s had two major knee injuries in three years and like Mitrovic isn’t a proven goalscorer at PL level only 11 in his only full season in the PL with Burnley.

      • Billmag

Won’t matter who we sign you would no doubt put a damper on it, look at the injuries Shearer had and he still came through it, saying all that I agree he isn’t worth £25ml.

      • Wor Lass

Yeah, £25 mill for a player who`s been part time for a couple of seasons is too much. The 11 goals are, at least, almost 3 times what the Hoss bagged last season. Ings is a good footballer and would be a good buy – at the right price and if fully fit! Probably won`t happen anyway!!

  • Billmag

Wouldn’t be to harsh on the lads don’t know how many games they’ve played pre season but they looked fitter than we did, we were too busy defending than trying to attack the defenders had a good work out but midfielder’s and strikers were redundant.

    • Wor Lass

They play in the super cup on the 4th August so they`re ready for competitive games already. I can`t believe how long Kenedy`s been given off – I wonder if he`s got a knock?

      • Billmag

        Must be a long birth.

  • Lostprofit DBC

When it comes to the real stuff, it’s wins not draws that will keep you up. 12 will do. Those wins at the end of last season, showed that being on the front foot, is the only way to perform at home. On the break away. Quick players needed but they cost money!

    • Leazes.

Front foot…. we achieved 35% possession yesterday…. exactly the same as last season at home…. we weren’t on the front foot.

      • Lostprofit DBC

Exactly but that is the best form of defence at home. Thinking of 95/96 too much! Wins against Southampton ant West Ham last year, plus Chelsea and Arsenal, are what I am on about, granted we hung on against Man Utd.

  • MagpieG

Second best all match, not a pleasant watch to be honest. By the way the woodwork doesn’t come to the rescue, it doesn’t move in a few inches, the shots weren’t simply on target.

  • SH.ER

Call me crazy, but i think it might be better for us if we lost 3 or 4-0
This game will be so so similar to the majority of games next season
Newcastle defending okay, but unable to get out & reduce pressure on the back
some will end in a draw many will end with 1-0 defeat
We just don’t have the players to keep the ball, & counter well

    • Leazes.

The defending is okay because the midfield gives them a hand….what is the starting formation and what is it in play?

  • Ba ba.

It’s preseason I wouldn’t worry to much if we won four nowt.. “we would of been playing Porto’s reserves”… Or something long those lines. .. .Everton lost 4,1 and just spunked 50miliion on some one I’ve not heard of.lets not panic just yet its all about fitness and game time.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

      Panic, don`t be silly.
6 games in is the time to panic

      • Ba ba.

I normally give it aboot ten then start to get worried very worried

      • Leazes.

        Tottenham
        Cardiff
        Chelsea (without Kenedy)
        Man City
        Arsenal
        Palace

Preparation of the bus…… not panic.

        • MichaelMaximusMoose

Can`t see a win in any of those matches with the squad as it stands, even Rafa won`t save us this time around

          • Leazes.

It’ll be exactly the same ‘suckerpunch’ tactics as last season…..

          • pedrodelgardo

I can imagine us beating Cardiff. It might be bad but we’re not going to lose every match – cheer up!

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

Everton £25m for a fullback today, Liverpool want £25m a piece for 2 reserve strikers.
we can`t compete, it`s as simple as that, it`ll be 38 games of Parking the Bus

    • Colin Brumwell

I dont think that we cannot compete, more that we wont compete

  • Leicester Mag

That the transfer market is crazy is a given. That said the money is there to make it crazy. Unlike Leeds back in the day teams are recycling the TV money not mortgaging the future. Will it go pop at some point ?possibly but by that point we’ll be long since sunk. 12 years shows Ashley is no football genius merely a greedy mendacious egotistical clown. This team pretty much lacks everything except organisation. Looked at as a squad it’s scarier still as starkly highlighted by the injury to Lejeune. Welcome to Fatty Arbukle’s last chance soloon again

  • ghostrider

A pre-season fitness work out that showed a difference in class…naturally.
The point to it all is very simple.
We are an average premier league side along with half of the premier league.

However, when the season kicks off in anger…only then will you see players really getting up to speed and also seeing a squad being blended into a regular unit.

    That’s when the fun/worry begins.

  • Brian Standen

Negativity on here reaches new levels I see!

    • Billmag

It’s the norm on here Brian.

      • Brian Standen

A draw in a competitive game with high calibre opposition!
I watched the game and yeah we were second best at times but certainly not that bad,,in fact I saw some decent stuff!

        • Billmag

I watched it up till about the 75min when I lost the stream, it seemed to me like I said on another post they were ahead of us in terms of fitness. And I think they would beat most premiership teams I think it was a good workout but as usual on here we are relegated before a ball is kicked in earnest.

          • Brian Standen

The article headline says it all, it could just as easily read ‘‘Newcastle gain credible draw at Porto’.
Yeah we all dislike Ashley but for me yesterday was positive for the reasons you mention above!

      • SuperDesHamilton

No it’s just your posts are absolute s*** like your crack.

        • Billmag

          Thanks Ducky.

  • pedrodelgardo

Decent without the ball – shocking when we got it back.

    • SuperDesHamilton

      Lies

  • SuperDesHamilton

It’s only pre season I agree but the lack of anything going forward is rather worrying, more so fatty won’t provide funds to remedy this
