With only 12 days to go until Newcastle host Tottenham, interesting to see how many minutes on the pitch for each United player in the friendlies so far.

So who have been the leading contenders so far and who is it that doesn’t appear to be a part of Rafa’s plans?

The Newcastle boss has only Wednesday’s match at Braga and next Saturday’s home friendly with Augsburg left to gauge which players should be used, once the competitive action begins.

Newcastle have played St Patrick’s Athletic, Hull, and Porto so far, with a maximum of 270 minutes available for each player.

A few things to take into consideration: Paul Dummett only came back on Saturday after being left out with a knock in the first two games, Ki had extended World Cup holiday so is being eased into things, Porto was the first game for new signing Schar, Kenedy has missed the last two friendlies due to his partner having a baby, Gayle left out of the last two games apparently due to an impending sale.

Minutes played in first team pre-season friendlies so far, 29 Newcastle players featuring so far:

207 Ritchie

198 Longstaff

179 Shelvey

177 Diame

162 Joselu

162 Perez

156 Yedlin

156 Clark

143 Yarney

135 Manquillo

135 Lascelles

117 Murphy

108 Roberts

108 Darlow

90 Aarons

75 Fernandez

72 Dubravka

69 Sterry

63 Armstrong

63 Atsu

55 Hayden

45 Dummett

45 Woodman

45 Sels

45 Lejeune

45 Kenedy

45 Gayle

45 Ki

24 Schar

Seven of the eight with most minutes, look set to start against Spurs, including Joselu who has started all three friendlies and as yet, no new striker brought in.

The exception in the eight is Sean Longstaff, the 20 year old getting the second highest number of minutes, probably just in case Hayden does end up going, just so he (Longstaff) has a bit of experience if needed in the squad.

Has Kenedy come back yet? I was wondering if either his wife`s had quintuplets spread over a couple of weeks or he`s had a knock. It`s not long since he was interviewed saying how pleased he was that he`d have a proper pre-season under his belt and be ready for the off. He hasn`t been seen since he said that, I don`t think! Also, it doesn`t look like Arma`s convinced Rafa that he`s first team material yet.

I was really glad to see Rafa give some of the younger players some time against Porto. Now they know what they need to achieve to measure up against first quality talent. Porto closed down almost everyone easily and took away the ball nearly at will, let’s hope a few of the youngsters take up the challenge to grow into the team as an asset rather than a place filler.

It looks as thought Ritchie will be staying, the Townsend deal seems to have collapsed. He’ll always put in the effort but I’d like to see Murphy used more this season. I think he can offer more as an attacking option.

Why is this interesting? Sorry, I think I’ve missed the point.
