Newcastle United are once again taking part in the NI Super Cup.

The young Magpies kicking off their group games on Monday night.

The annual event sees Newcastle’s young stars (NUFC Under 17s) taking part for the seventh year in a row, the tournament running until this Friday (27 July).

The group stage sees them up against three opponents: from Japan, Chile and Northern Ireland.

Formerly known as the Milk Cup, the Super Cup NI, Newcastle took on local side Co Down in their opening group match.

Newcastle United took the lead midway through the first half (35 minutes each way in these games) through Kain Reed, only for Co Down to level just before half-time.

Worse was to come as five minutes into the second-half, the local side took the lead.

Despite being second best in terms of both play and chances, Newcastle scrambled a very late equaliser to grab a ball, Jude Swailes scoring when a free-kick wasn’t cleared.

The other two group matches before getting to the knockout stages:

Tuesday 24 July 5pm:

Newcastle United v Deportes Iqique (Chile)

Wednesday 25 July 3pm:

Newcastle United v Ichifuna (Japan)
