Anthony Limbombe is a target for Newcastle once again, according to reports on Tuesday morning.

The Belgian international winger was first linked with Newcastle back in June (see below), it was claimed back then that a host of clubs were after him and that supposedly Huddersfield had offered £13m – but Club Brugge and the player were waiting to see what Newcastle and other clubs would do, before making a decision.

The latest claims from Belgium see HLN report that Newcastle United and other clubs are now bidding to buy the 24 year old.

It is further claimed in the media that Rafa Benitez is happy to sell Christian Atsu to then help pay, and make space for, Anthony Limbombe.

The season in Belgium has already kicked off, with Club Brugge beating Standard Liege 2-1 in the Super Cup on Sunday 22 July, then this last Sunday (29 July) they beat AS Eupen 5-2 in the opening league match.

Anthony Limbombe was left out of both matchday squads, appearing to indicate that Club Brugge are intending to sell and the player will leave for a new club, whether that is Newcastle United remains to be seen.

Nine days until transfer deadline day

The Mag – 19 June 2018:

Newcastle United have registered their interest with Club Brugge and are set to come in with their bid for Anthony Limbombe this week, according to HLN in Belgium.

The winger who can also play as a striker, was born in Belgium and played his early football there.

However, he joined NEC in the Dutch second tier in 2014 as a 20 year old and scored 14 times as he helped them to promotion, the following season scoring seven times in the Dutch top division.

That brought a £2m return to Belgium with Club Brugge signing him two years ago, the first signing a disappointment with only 12 league starts and no goals.

However, this past season saw Anthony Limbombe become a regular and he scored six goals, making 29 league starts and another three off the bench.

The winger helped Club Brugge win the regular season easily, then also emerge victorious from the Championship play-offs, which means they go straight into the Champions League group stages.

Despite the Champions League football and cash, club and player are set to part company.

HLN says that whilst there was initial interest from French and German clubs, it is now English clubs who dominate the chase.

They state that Huddersfield have already bid £13m which is the original price Club Brugge were looking for.

However, with both Newcastle and Southampton having already approached the Belgian club, the player’s agents have been led to expect bids from these two by the end of the week, so will wait to see who comes up with the best offer for their player.

A lot of links appearing with regard to Newcastle and players in Belgium, so this is another for the list.

Anthony Limbombe made his first appearance for the Belgium national senior side in March but wasn’t selected for the World Cup squad, so if any transfer is in the offing for any club the World Cup won’t delay it.

  • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

This would be exciting. We were after him last year. Put Rondon in the middle with him wide and we’ll be potent.

    • Clarko

How many times have you seen him play?

      • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Never live, I’ve seen a bit on tv. There are always risks but he’s similar to Kenedy as far as I can see.

        • Clarko

You’ve seen ‘a bit’ of Limbombe playing for Club Brugge on TV? Sure.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Yes, it’s on Bein & You tube – We were linked with the guy last summer so I look out for him. I do the same for Jorgensen (sp?) since we were linked with him.

I can’t say I know a lot but no less than many posting on here. I see fat Jezza has already written him off. Seems Atsu is likely to leave if he arrives.

          • Clarko

‘I can’t say I know a lot but no less than many posting on here’

Yeah that’s just a pet peeve of mine, I read most comments posted on this site and I know how little everyone knows about the club they “support” and actually watch so when someone makes a comment about a player from another club I know that comment is probably uninformed. But, if you say you have watched him, who am I to say that you haven’t.

I don’t recall watching a single second of footage (I probably did when we were linked previously), that said I’ve watched plenty of Atsu, although I like Astu and he was useful last season I’d trade him for Limbombe based on Atsu being a non starter, if worse comes to worse, what are we risking? A 10/15 minute bench player? It’s worth the risk.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

It’s a risk because he’s in a lower level league but plenty have done well in that league and done well at higher levels including the EPL. He seems to be fairly direct, strong and selects a pass better than Atsu albeit in a lower league.

I’d be far more comfortable losing Atsu and bringing him in to compete with Richie but I get the sense that Richie (& to his credit) does not want to warm the bench anywhere and will leave if not a starter.

    • Wor Lass

Potent? Now, I`ve no massive knowledge of Rondon. I saw a few highlights of W Brom last season and he did look threatening but that was about it and his goal scoring record isn`t exactly reassuring. If he really is a Rafa target then there may be something in it but, then again, Rafa bought the Hoss. Time will tell and I`ll certainly keep an open mind but I`m not exactly salivating!

      • Billmag

People keep bringing Joselu’s name up good heavens he was a last second signing, Rafa being put into a corner by fatty how much was he involved after Xmas. The lad has limited ability we all know that but he has become a joke figure amongst most poster’s on here, he did a job for the club when called upon.

        • Wor Lass

Joselu`s a good lad and tries hard but as a striker he isn`t good enough. Yes, Rafa was in a hole but he`s disappearing down the same one now – history repeating itself. Rondon looks strong and works hard but his goal-scoring stats are poor. Fingers crossed, if we sign him, that he can improve.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

another winger, someone at Nufc wants their head examined, we`re a top central defender down, we haven`t got a srtiker worth a quid and they are looking at wingers

    • Clarko

In my opinion we have one Premier League quality winger and he’s not even ours. We should absolutley be looking at wingers.

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

no good having wingers without a striker,
2 planks out, 2 planks in isn`t going to help

        • Ram Kishore

Strikers won’t score standing on the other end with no winger to attack or to assist..

If Atsu is going out and we are buying him, and Rafa wants him.. buying him is sensible

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

we`ve got 5 wingers & no strikers that can score in this league
what do you buy 1st ?

          • Lewis SG

            A goalie

          • Ram Kishore

Yes a striker obviously, but u dont rate Atsu, Aarons.
Buying a winger to replace these isn’t a bad deal.. but I know this could be just a media speculation.

        • Clarko

Then what’s the point of buying anyone then? No good having a centre back without a striker…

We’ve bought a striker (Muto) and we’re in the process of buying another one (Rondon). Regardless of your opinion of our strikers we have three including two new arrivals.

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

sub standard, look at their CV`s 2 planks out, 2 planks in

          • Clarko

To use your own logic, why bother bringing in anyone else when we have ‘2 planks’ up top? There’s no point right? We should forfeit the season now right? What’s the point in improving our team?

How many time have you seen Muto play? How many times have you seen Rondon play?

          • Wor Lass

Clarko, he`s no doubt doing exactly what you do (and the rest of us) and looking on sites like transfermarket then coming to a conclusion based on their actual records.

          • Leazes.

Is he having a go at me? Of course I’m not a scout and watch very little Belgian television, and have to make up for the deficiencies in the articles that are presented which are sort of deficient in detail and facts…. very useful tool for finding out the players records, goals assists injuries, as a method of assessment….

I just wish the chronicle would use it instead of skirting over deficiencies of players…. I was told by Luke Edwards of the the Chronicle that they do use these sites such as Soccer Base to get their ‘facts’.

          • Wor Lass

            Not you – Triple M.

          • Clarko

Yeah, I don’t do that. I watch a player play, I make a judgement and then I support my judgement with statistics (sometimes from transfermarkt). He has never watched either player play.

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

the team isn`t being improved one iota it`s a sticking plaster job, like moving the deck chairs around on the Titanic,
the result will be the same.
            another battle against relegation

          • Ba ba.

Has the band started to play yet and captain Smith at the helm waiting for the inevitable?

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

Capt Rafa will be gone before it sinks

          • Clarko

So signing Kenedy in January didn’t improve the team last year when we didn’t have a PL calibre striker?

      • Jate Legend

I think Ritchie is also good enough for the prem. Atsu isn’t and this guy looks like another upgrade, which could be great. But I agree with the above, it does feel more important to bring in CB cover and close the rondon deal first. And even get another striker and sell on Joselu.

        • Clarko

Nowhere did I say that we shouldn’t be looking at bringing in another CB, we are. I saying that there is nothing wrong with improving our wide midfielders.

          • Jate Legend

I agree. My assumption is there is a limited amount of deals we will be able to close before the window shuts. If we get another wide player in but no cb cover, I think its a risk. If we do all the deals, great.

      • Toontaff

Jacob Murphy has the potential, at 23 he should improve.

        • Wor Lass

He showed potential last season – he needs a run to gain confidence.

            Spot on

        • SuperDesHamilton

Hopefully he gets a sustained run then we can see what he has

        • Clarko

          A) I’ve seen nothing to suggest that he is/will be good enough and B) We need someone now.

    • Lewis SG

At least it’s not a goalkeeper!

  • Leazes.

Yes from the Belgian league, to put it into context the value of the entire Jupiter Pro League is less than the Man City squad.

A bit strange that we were yesterday linked with the 33 year old Leighton Baines who has the same agent…. maybe just the agent touting players around.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

the only half decent player we`ve had from the Benelux countries was Gini

If we wanted a winger from Belgium it should of been Achempong but the c*** went to the Chinese league

  • MetalMickey

Would love another Ki (type) deal arriving completely under the noses of all the ‘in-the-knows’ showing Rondon to be nothing more than a smoke screen.
The fat cockney shop owner has left Rafa truly in the charts. But despite the failings of Hoss, I trust him to get the best he possibly can as a Mitro replacement. The quoted Rondon amount of £16.5m would leave scope for a striker with a better eye for goal.

  • Jezza

I will be very surprised if we make any more signings before the deadline to be truthful. I think once the Muto deal is ratified that will be it, I’m afraid.

    • TheNutJob

unless they exchange Dwight for Rondon which is hardly an upgrade.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Could you tell me when this happened? I think we met at Reading btw

          • Mrkgw

I haven’t a clue when it happened – only the regime have the answers. What I do know is that we spend markedly less on players than inferior or smaller clubs. Thst has to rouse suspicion, surely. We have fallen down the pecking order in the time since Halls ownership. Yes, the club was in debt then however, Ashley has taken things to another extreme whereby the lack of investment is telling. No marquee signings, nothing. Its not a good time to be a supporter of the club, thats for sure. Things were amazing in the 90s but now, cripes, it’s rank awful.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

            So you made it up?

Yep, we met at Palace, your name is Keith.

          • Mrkgw

No, I read an extract which was either via Newsnow or on this site yesterday which explained that the sale of players are agreed in installments as this denies Rafa immediate funds to reinvest. It went on to say that such deals enable clever accounting to syphon money away from the club. Have to say that it sounds logical as otherwise, where has the money gone from previous sales of players i.e. Wijnaldum, Sissoko, Townsend, Thauvin? And now Mitrovic, Mbemba, Sels? Fact is that every day we are told that we cannot afford even £6m deals. Is thst right for a club of this size? Absolutely not hence, something is wrong. Somewhere at least. Problem is that the club don’t generally engage with supporters hence, we are all left speculating which stirs unrest. I don’t favour the personal insult tone aimed at Mike Ashley however, he has made an awful job of things at Newcastle and he does himself no favours. I understand however, that your view might differ and tha’ts fine. Anyway, in response to your other question, sorry but we haven’t met and no, my name isn’t Keith. All the best.

          • Mrkgw

Btw, and there is the TV money. Where has that gone?

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

            In the bank account.

You were at Palace away though?

          • Mrkgw

            No, wasn’t at palace.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Selling of players in installments does not allow money to be syphoned off any more than selling in one lump some.

            It’s a ridiculous theory.

Were you at Palace away? I’m sure my mate gave you a ticket. He introduced you as Keith? He knows me as Bob.

          • Mrkgw

Definitely not me Bob. Palace is not a ground that I’ve been to before.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

I’m sorry, I’m mistaken. It must be the closest away ground to you.

Did you go to Reading the season before? It was just my pal got the same guy a ticket, lives in Kent but I may have misheard.

Anyway, how does selling in installments mean syphoning off? You have to understand that is strange reasoning? As is taking Newsnow/ the Mag comments as a font of truth.

          • Mrkgw

No Bob, neither Reading. White Hart Lane and of course, Wembley last season. I normally have to sit with the home support and manage to keep my mouth sufficiently shut so as to avoid any confrontations. Always good before and after however, to see some of my fellow northerners.

Back to the cash aspect. It might seem to be strange reasoning but ultimately, where is the money? The club seem to plead poverty but, where has the money gone? Yes, it WILL be in an account, but where? We should never be in the situation whereby we cannot compete with the likes of Brighton, Bournemouth, Wolves and Fulham. We should be up there with the best of them. Dated though it may be, St James is a colossus of a place and if nothing else, a representstion as to the potential that this club has. I wish that Mike Ashley would see this and act in best interest of the club. At the moment, anger quite clearly builds amongst the faithful and quite rightly so.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

You see, when pushed you can debate beyond the ‘Ashley Out’ exclamation!!

He’s not siphoned off any money since he owned the club. £18m of the Carroll money repaid his Championship loan but that loan was made expressly (in the accounts) secured against player sales.

So, where is the money or moreover, what is the strategy?

2 things, the first is fact:

He can take repayment of part of his loan at any time, he can take it tax free and there does not need to be siphoning it off in secret. As the chap who is accused of being me (Ben Jones) says below, making secret payments is illegal & there is no evidence to suggest this has happened – furthermore, why would he do it? He’s not short of liquidity himself so again, no point in him withdrawing the money. If he was taking repayment of his loan, it is highly likely that he’d have to notify Companies House (as happened when the 2016 loan was made), this has not happened.

OK, the 2nd part is my guess at the strategy. He’s putting as much liquidity into the club as possible. He’s readying it for sale and I’d not be surprised is Amanda is back in October. If the club is sitting on cash , any new buyer comes in and does not have to do anything. His loans stand at £144m so even if you go with the alleged ask of £400m to get Ashley out of the picture, (i think he accepts far less) the shares are £256m. Basically a new owner comes in, pays the £256m for the shares (More likely below £200m), gets the £144m financed by a bank and access to a bank account with £50m ready to use on transfers.

This theory is based on what I think the real reason the takeover did not happen. The £250m offer was turned down but PCP did not come back with a better offer. I think they were put off by the need to throw personal money in the pot for transfers. If they don’t have to put more in then they get the club for £190m-£250m and even then that can be leveraged.

          • Mrkgw

Interesting take on things and you are well versed as to the figures involved. I have hoped that the latest round of sales are readying the ship for takeover however, this is countered by a beilef that the club is too much of a cash cow to relinquish control. Nevetheless, the distinct lack of investment in playing staff is startling. ‘If’ this latest chapter relates to a potential sale then surely, it will be a case of sooner rather than later as Mike is playing roulette with our premiership status. Relegation means that he has lost as there is no way imaginable that we would bounce back a third time. Not a chance. This season will almost certainly see us fighting a relegation battle unless players are signed. That is of course, stating the obvious. But, the chief concern or gripe of mine is that Ashleys tenure has been a miserable affair. Lacklusture at best. His torturous bashing of the Geordie nation is not easily to be forgotten hence, my continual citing ‘ASHLEY OUT!’ Nothing personal, I just believe that he has made a real hash of things and yet, it didn’t have to be this way.
