Newcastle United are not just failing to buy players – Almost as though club is just waiting…

It isn’t exactly headline news, saying this Newcastle United transfer window has been a little…disappointing.

Rafa Benitez going public this week with his frustrations.

The Newcastle manager revealing that he has not been given any kind of realistic transfer budget and needs to sell players before he can buy anybody.

This is all quite bizarre enough but it is only when you look at what has happened, or rather not happened, in this NUFC transfer window overall, that you get a true picture of a club seemingly paralysed in inaction.

With only 20 days until the transfer window deadline, the total transfer business has been: players bought – Dubravka (£4m) and Ki Sung-yueng (Free), plus Kenedy in on loan. Going out, there has only been Mikel Merino (£10m) to Real Sociedad.

So with less than three weeks left for transfers, Newcastle have three in and one out.

When you compare this to last summer, the differences are striking.

With 20 days to go until last summer’s transfer deadline, there had already been seven players coming in and 10 going out (full lists below), 17 deals completed in total (the lists for both summers 2017  and 2018 don’t include players leaving out of contract).

Rafa has made clear that he has been left without funds by Mike Ashley and so maybe no surprise only those three low cost incoming transfers so far.

However, it just seems bizarre that there hasn’t even been a single young player gone out on loan yet.

Is it simply because Rafa Benitez doesn’t have any confidence in who he will be left with come 5pm on Thursday 9 August on deadline day? The Chronicle reported this week that 20 year old midfielder Sean Longstaff had been stopped from going to Portsmouth on loan, until Rafa saw how things had panned out on transfers.

We have also seen players such as Mbemba and Sels set to leave, only for the deals to drag on forever and still nothing happening, Mike Ashley allegedly insisting on valuations that are never going to be met.

if you didn’t know better, you would almost think the NUFC owner was trying to sabotage his own club’s transfer dealings in and out this summer…

So much clearly still needs to happen with both players coming in and going out, just what kind of a shape will Newcastle United be in, come the end of this window, two weeks on Thursday?
