Diego Reyes is set to sign for Newcastle United according to reports from Italy this morning.
The Italian media outlet Calcio Mercato are claiming an exclusive on their report that the 25 year old defender will sign for Newcastle rather than Lazio.
The Mexican international is a free agent after his five year contract ended at Porto, who have just recruited Newcastle’s Chancel Mbemba.
Diego Reyes is a 6ft 2 central defender who arrived from Mexican club football in 2013 for £5m but has struggled to get a game in Portugal.
In those five years he has only started 16 league games for the Portuguese club and has spent most of his time either on the bench or playing for the reserves, as well as two spells on loan in Spain.
Reyes was with Real Sociedad in 2015/16 and then Espanyol in 2016/17, though neither club attempted to get him on a permanent contract after the end of his loan deal.
Despite so little football with Porto, the defender continued to be a part of his country’s squad and was set to be in Russia this summer, only for a hamstring injury to force him to drop out of the Mexican World Cup squad.
The Italian media transfer stories don’t have a great track record of success but the odd time even they get one right.
Whatever the truth, or not, of this one, it is inevitable that Newcastle United will be linked with these kind of budget signings, as Rafa Benitez has been given no transfer funds to strengthen the squad, having to rely on selling players before he can buy anybody, or even bring in free transfers seemingly.
Only 16 days until transfer deadline and with both Colback and Mbemba leaving these past few days, Newcastle fans hoping it will get incoming deals moving.
‘Exclusive: Newcastle United close to Diego Reyes signing
‘According to what has been exclusively learnt by CalcioMercato.com, Newcastle United, of the English Premier League, are extremely close to signing former Porto centre-back Diego Reyes.
‘The Mexican defender has previously linked with a move to Lazio, as his contract expired with Portuguese outfit Porto earlier in the summer.
‘Yet it appears as though Rafa Benitez has convinced him to go to England and the Premier League ahead of the 2018/19 season.”
