Diego Reyes is set to sign for Newcastle United according to reports from Italy this morning.

The Italian media outlet Calcio Mercato are claiming an exclusive on their report that the 25 year old defender will sign for Newcastle rather than Lazio.

The Mexican international is a free agent after his five year contract ended at Porto, who have just recruited Newcastle’s Chancel Mbemba.

Diego Reyes is a 6ft 2 central defender who arrived from Mexican club football in 2013 for £5m but has struggled to get a game in Portugal.

In those five years he has only started 16 league games for the Portuguese club and has spent most of his time either on the bench or playing for the reserves, as well as two spells on loan in Spain.

Reyes was with Real Sociedad in 2015/16 and then Espanyol in 2016/17, though neither club attempted to get him on a permanent contract after the end of his loan deal.

Despite so little football with Porto, the defender continued to be a part of his country’s squad and was set to be in Russia this summer, only for a hamstring injury to force him to drop out of the Mexican World Cup squad.

The Italian media transfer stories don’t have a great track record of success but the odd time even they get one right.

Whatever the truth, or not, of this one, it is inevitable that Newcastle United will be linked with these kind of budget signings, as Rafa Benitez has been given no transfer funds to strengthen the squad, having to rely on selling players before he can buy anybody, or even bring in free transfers seemingly.

Only 16 days until transfer deadline and with both Colback and Mbemba leaving these past few days, Newcastle fans hoping it will get incoming deals moving.

Calcio Mercato:

‘Exclusive: Newcastle United close to Diego Reyes signing

‘According to what has been exclusively learnt by CalcioMercato.com, Newcastle United, of the English Premier League, are extremely close to signing former Porto centre-back Diego Reyes.

‘The Mexican defender has previously linked with a move to Lazio, as his contract expired with Portuguese outfit Porto earlier in the summer.

‘Yet it appears as though Rafa Benitez has convinced him to go to England and the Premier League ahead of the 2018/19 season.”

He will probably go to Lazio when he gets wind of what an owner we have!

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

      They`ll keep that a secret

    • Kneebotherm8

Our owner is full of wind………and schittt….

  • Lostprofit DBC

Bad injury record, lent out from one club to another, free but with no interest from the top clubs. Yes he will do for us. Never thought I’d say this but if the Swiss lad comes as well, bye bye Lascelles.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

One report has Scher coming for £3.5m

Squad player of different clubs have gone on to be good players for other clubs in top 5 leagues..
Just saying Clark wasnt great for Aston Villa in his final two seasons but was our important squad player last season and starter in the championship..
      Just a honest opinion

Welll, on Saturday I watched a match between Levski Sofia and the mighty Botev Plovidiv. The left-winger for Levski made only one mistake in the whole match, in giving away a free kick which allowed a raking shot to bulge the side-netting. The foul was, in fact the sole contribution of Gabriel Obertan to the whole of the afternoon’s proceedings. Now I’m certainly not suggesting that we shouldn’t be trying to bring it quality players, but if, for whatever reason, we can’t/won’t then it seems to me we might as well trawl the lower English leagues. If we have to play our fourth-choice, crocked CB, then is he really going to be better than A.N. Other, who would, at least regard the game as the high spot of his career and do his level best. Mind you, we’re bonny on if it comes to that. Mebbe we’re bonny on anyway.

        • Ram Kishore

I doubt he’s even on the 5% of players whom we are trying to sign..
It seems he’s on the 95% of the players whom we are not after.

  • Leazes.

Why are we being linked with CB’s?
Is he injured….. I’ll look myself don’t do any work on the authenticity of it Simon just cut and paste rumours…… yes he’s crocked…… Hamstring, return unknown.
But he he’s free so it must be true……..

This would be an interesting signing. Mexican international, age 25, good replacement for Mbemba.

  • robbersdog

So we’re signing the guy who our guy, Mbemba, has just replaced at Porto? Oh well, let’s hope he’s good!

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

      He`s cheaoer

  • Dave Mitchison

I give up, it’s getting to the point where we are the victims in an abusive relationship. But when you love something you stick with it no matter what

    • Leazes.

You can’t both ‘give up’ and ‘stick with it’, it doesn’t make sense.

      • Dave Mitchison

I give up is used as an expression of frustration in this instance and not as an indication of my intentions to walk away from the club.

        • Leazes.

I know, I was just being pedantic.

          • Dave Mitchison

That said Leazes it does slowly destroy your spirit the way the club is run.

      • Dave Mitchison

🤔 From now on I shall use “at a loss” as I can see where it may confuse some.

  • Graham Chapman

Brilliant!, we put Mbemba on a plane to Portugal and send someone back with a dodgy hamstring on the return flight.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

      A very curious case indeed

    • Oval85

No other club in PL would even have these kind of rumours… pathetic!
