Aleksandar Mitrovic is still in limbo.
Despite much speculation and claims of yet more ongoing talks, he remains a Newcastle United player.
Most Fulham fans thought it was a foregone conclusion that he would be signing after the World Cup but over four weeks after Aleksandar Mitrovic exited this summer’s tournament, still nothing agreed.
Not surprisingly, the Fulham fans are getting a bit anxious with only two weeks to go until deadline day.
The London Evening Standard reported today that Mitro has now agreed personal terms with Fulham and all that is waited for is the two clubs agreeing a price.
With Fulham reported to be only willing to pay £16m and Newcastle holding out for more (between £18m and £20m depending on what you read), interesting to see what fans of the West London club are saying.
The odd one is saying let Newcastle sweat but the vast majority, as you can read below, are wanting their club to just get the asking price paid ASAP.
Comments from Fulham fans via their top FulhamWeb message board:
‘We must stop squabbling over Mitrovic money and sign him!!!
Schurrie is a good player, but he isn’t a striker to guarantee us 25 goals. He could score up to 15 going from his stats.
That is why Mitrovic is so important to us. Mitrovic will get his goals from set-pieces and corners, and he will do the donkey work and occupy 2 defenders, and that will enable or wingers to do their running etc.
With Mitro in the team, it is possible that Sessegnon and Schurrie will hit 15 goals plus.
Mitrovic is key to our final jigsaw, and we just need to sign him whatever. Benitez knows how dangerous Mitrovic is, and he will not have forgotten Newcastle’s defeat to Fulham without Mitrovic.
We must go Cap in hand with a 20 million cheque to Newcastle, and sign Mitrovic. Everything will fall into place then, and we can get on with our season.’
‘If the money we are talking about is a discrepancy of 4 million at most? 16-20? We shouldn’t need to hold out for the best deal.
Saving 50p and collecting points on a Tesco club card is a different ballgame. We have some, not all the play-off funds available to us. It would be a shame if we lose Mitrovic for the sake of saving a few million quid. I am positive that most Fulham fans would be fuming if we lose Mitrovic because of this.’
‘I cannot believe that we are haggling over paying £18mln for Aleksandar Mitrovic, someone that has proven himself at Fulham, loves playing for us and will be necessary to increase our fire power. Please get this resolved asap.’
‘Have to agree. We need a settle team by the start of the season.’
‘We don’t know what’s been said or agreed. maybe there’s a point of principle Fulham want to make.
Remember, Newcastle would probably have sold Mitro for £12m only 6months ago.
Also, was there some gentleman agreement on what Fulham would pay should we want to buy him.
Also, given we are buying players in the 20-30m bracket, maybe we are really looking for someone even better than Mitro – maybe Mitro wants a guarantee no.1 status. etc etc.’
‘Newcastle need a replacement which is going to cost 20 million, Ashley hates putting his hand in his pocket.’
‘Mitro is worth every penny of the £20m so for gods sake pay the money and lets get him prepared properly for the new season as we can’t afford to have a bad start like last season.’
‘We should get a big discount for making him into a £20m player, after all Newcastle paid £13m for him and he has been a failure for them, so much so they loaned him out to us a Championship team last January .
FFC should play hard ball with Ashley or go for someone else but please not Gayle.’
‘I believe NUFC are jetting off to Portugal today. They need to make a call if they take Mitro with them or not. If they do, I suspect the deal will not happen and we will go elsewhere. if they leave Mitro behind, means they will want to do a deal with Fulham.
The other scenario is if Mitro refuses to travel…while I think professionally it would be wrong for Mitro to do that, but it would be interesting!’
‘Earlier in the year Mitro was valued around 12 mil. Then he started scoring for fun, did sort of OK at the world cup and suddenly, because we “need” him he’s worth 20!
There are other needs in play here, Benitez needs money before he can buy and everyone knows he doesn’t want Mitro. So, wait patiently, let them sweat, turn up the heat.’
