March 2015 saw Newcastle United first linked with Fabian Schar.

Over three years later it was reported on Monday that Newcastle were interested once again (see below).

Now 26, the central defender was relegated with Deportivo this past season and is reported to be desperate to get away, the Swiss international having a release clause in his contract.

This has been reported to be between £3m and £4m.

With Chancel Mbemba now out of the door and Florian Lejeune having a knee injury that Rafa Benitez is waiting anxiously on, to discover just how serious it is, it leaves only Clark and Lascelles as first team squad central defenders.

Unless of course you count Paul Dummett but then he is the club’s only reliable left-back…

The Mirror claimed this morning that a £3,5m release clause had been activated by Newcastle United.

That has been followed by reports in both Spain and Switzerland that the move is indeed happening.

Wednesday lunchtime has seen Sky Sports reporting that their information is that it is a £3m release clause that has been activated and that Fabian Schar is expected in Newcastle today for his medical.

The Mag – 23 July 2018:

It was back in March 2015 when Newcastle United were first claimed to be interested in Fabian Schar.

At the time the then 23 year old centre-back was playing for Basel but running down the final year of his contract.

The likes of Inter and Arsenal were also linked but in the end he signed for Hoffenheim, the Bundesliga club having to pay £3m youth development compensation after signing the defender.

Only 23 league starts followed in his two years there, before moving on to Deportivo la Coruna in summer 2017.

Now Newcastle United are said to be interested once again with The Mail reporting Rafa Benitez is looking at the player as a squad replacement for Chancel Mbemba, who has no future at Newcastle.

Fabian Schar is claimed to be keen to move after a disastrous year with the Spanish club, Deportivo le Coruna relegated, as the Swiss defender started 25 La Liga games and was unused on the bench nine times.

It isn’t exactly a plus point that it was Deportivo’s disastrous defending that was the main factor in their relegation, a massive 76 goals conceded and the next highest goals conceded goals being 74 and 61.

On a more positive note, Fabian Schar continues to be first choice for his country and played three times in this summer’s World Cup, helping his country get draws against Brazil and Costa Rica, as well as beating Serbia and Mitro 2-1.

Now 26, Schar is a decent age for a potential signing and has good experience already, plus he could be available for a relatively low fee. With Rafa Benitez having to look for bargains once again, it could be possible to once again make a profit if Mbemba leaves and Fabian Schar arrives. There are widespread media claims that the player has a release clause in his Deportivo contract, that release clause claimed to be £3m or £4m depending which reports you read.

The Mag – 11 March 2015:

Fabian Schar is the latest player linked with a move to Newcastle, the Swiss defender running his contract down and available at the end of the season.

United are widely reported today to be one of the clubs trying to get the centre-back to commit to a pre-contract before a summer move.

There would still be compensation payable for Schar’s youth development as he will still be under the age of 24 come the end of the season.

The defender and his teammates were given a right runaround on Tuesday night, Porto sticking four past them and knocking Basel out of the Champions League with a 5-1 aggregate win.

When it went to 3-0 on the night with half an hour to go and the tie decided, Schar was instantly taken out of the firing line.

The Swiss international is highly rated and has the added bonus of regularly adding goals, something that is a lost art these days for Newcastle’s central defenders. Despite his youth, Fabian Schar already has 24 goals for Basel and 4 for his country.

With 33 appearances in Europe, including 18 in the Champions League, he has no shortage of experience against quality players outside of the weak Swiss domestic league, with Basel well clear again this season as they look nailed on to land another league title.

The player’s profile has not surprisingly attracted attention, Arsenal and Inter having already been credited with interest which caused the player himself to make the following comments in January.

“I have read the transfer market rumours, they are normal at this time. I can say that without a doubt I think Inter are a top club and would be an ideal destination.”

“However, I have a contract which ties me to Basel and I am very happy here – at the moment I’m not thinking about anything else.”

There have been links with various Swiss based players in recent weeks and suggestions that Newcastle have now moved on to targeting both Belgium and Switzerland.

With players soon to be out of contract also appearing to be a popular group United are looking to target this summer, there will be fierce competition to be overcome if Newcastle are to land any credible ‘bargain’ signings.

  • Paul Patterson

With the news about Lejuene, this buy is a necessity.

    • Jezza

I would have said a decent proven Premiership standard defender bought for his market value would have been much more of a necessity.

      • Ram Kishore

We would have been overpriced put for any PL defender…

        • Jezza

Why? All the other clubs in the Premiership are buying the players they need. Why can’t we? £100+ television money, £40 million+ transfer profits since Rafa came in. Why are we reduced to selling a player for £7 million to fund the purchase of one for £3 million?

          • Ram Kishore

I really don’t know the reason unless the club opens up.
Maybe the club wanted to move the Rafa’s unwanted players first to make sure they don’t get stuck with them along with the new players signed ..
All i can say is Fabian is a good talent and an international we bought for Cheap.
He may turn out to be better or he may not be any good.
Not bad when u compare kevin Wimmer who was signed by stoke for 18 m, highly inflated transfer fee
            who didnt do much..
Because PL defenders are overpriced .. there are good performers too but we can’t buy 15 million pound defender.

  • Polarboy

By all accounts a very useful player especially for the price. It obviously doesn’t exactly get the pulse racing in the same buying a forward would, but it’s better than nothing.

  • Weyhhadaway

Good signing, saves the fat lad a few quid. With Lejeune crocked it is much needed.

  • Mxpx

This guy is excellent if we’re getting him for 3m that’s ridiculous straight swap for mbemba can’t complain

    • Leazes.

Did a great job for Deporto didn’t he…. relegated?

So by what measure is he an excellent buy…. he’s cheap?

A Charnley buy using a list from Carr from 2015!

No doubt Rafa will ratify the plundering swoop!

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

        Penfold still has Carr`s list

      • SuperDesHamilton

I’m trying to scrape positives from this transfer and all I can get is last season deportivo were a shambles top to bottom, this had been coming for a few years, over reliance on certain agencies & agents to conduct transfers…sound familiar

        • Leazes.

Positives are the easiest thing in the world…. just say he’s a bargain, a shrewd buy, a transfer masterstroke, or plucked from under the radar of the ambitious clubs or a Rafa requisition.

…..the hard part is then turning a player who has a market value is less than Shola’s leg into any of those things….

…..That’s the chronicles job….. watch what Ryder does!

          • SuperDesHamilton

Swiss super man two page spread! Just watch

Ryder will be checking his stats on Fifa as we speak

          • Leazes.

Dead ball specialist….. in the Swiss second tier…. he got 2 last year…… he’ll be sold to the fans by Ryder as the next Laurent Robert….. the bigging up begins!

      • Martin Rooney

Does that make Rafa an ‘Ashley patsy’?

    • Dillon Tovak

If this is an upgrade and money pocketed, makes you wonder why Porto didn’t just buy him?

      • Jezza

Spot on. In the transfer market, as in life, you get what you pay for.

        • Ram Kishore

          Not all the time..
          Its relative.
When it comes to the very best like the players signed by top 6. U r right ..

          • Jezza

We’ll we skimped on the striker budget last summer by signing Joselu for a mere £5 million and look where that got us.

          • Ram Kishore

Joselu was brought on as a squad player and he’s doing exactly that .
We had Gayle and Mitro on big money they were either unwanted or didn’t hit the ground running..
The players whom we were linked too like Tammy Abraham didn’t spark either at Swansea..

Look at Palace, Benteke didnt do much for the past two seasons there or 3 including the liverpool one. He may come good this season but he’s still struggling to justify his fee. Benteke cant be blamed for the fee though..
I am just trying to say it’s relative..
In Joselu’s case u are right and he may score more this season but on Benteke’s case it ain’t for now

      • Ram Kishore

I think different manager different styles.. There are many reasons..
Not all clubs are necessarily after the same player right.
It was reported that Porto were after him 3 years ago..
Their scouting and acquisitions are not manager led

  • Desree

we bought phillipe albert for 3m in 1994.

    • Leazes.

We bought Malcolm Macdonald for £180k

      • Paul Patterson

Rob Lee for £750k in 92. Sung-Yeung for free in 2018.

        • Leazes.

Thing is that is this players market value!

        • MichaelMaximusMoose

Rob Lee would now cost you £50m, at least

          • Paul Patterson

Gary Speed and Rob Lee would be £100m.

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

            Yip. top class

      • toonterrier

We bought Robledo for four pounds two and six and it was money well spent.

    • panther

      in 1994

    • Jezza

£3 million got you a top class internatonal defender back in 1994. It gets you nowt in today’s transfer market.

  • Peaky

Would have gone for Maguire……😂😂😂😂😂……..it’s the heat….

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

    Wonder who`s buying Jamaal
    🚁🚁🚁🚁🚁

    • Leazes.

As soon as you hear of a bid from Everton or PSG the bidding war starts.

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

        Nail on the head

    • Peaky

      Wolves….

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

        😂😂😂😂😂
Jezza`s been in front of a mirror for a week saying
        “I told them so”
Leazes and him were spot on in May

        • Peaky

They were…..I’m going to put Jezza’s Almanac on my Christmas wish list…🎅🏻🎅🏻

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

I want the lottery numbers off him
            😂

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

If only he was a betting man who actually paid his debts.

          • Jezza

Sadly the lottery numbers are nowhere near as as easy to predict as a Newcastle United transfer window under the fat greedy pig.

      • MP01

he’s not portuguese and related to Uncle Jorge though……

        • Peaky

          😂😂 Aye….fair comment.

    • Paul Patterson

Anyone with a budget bigger than ours. So that could be Gateshead to be honest . .

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

if Man U get the guy from Spurs that`ll start the ball rolling

  • Clarko

If we bring in Rondon (for Gayle), Muto (for Mitrovic), Schär and Bryan before the window shuts would you be happy?

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

No because Rondon is no better than what we have, i have no opinion on Muto as i don`t know how good he is

      • Billmag

Personally I think he is better than what we have, he is more mobile wether he is worth what they are asking for him is a different matter.

    • Ki’ping the faith

Schar and Bryan, yes. They will add some quality and cover. Don’t know much of Muto. I quite like Rondon, but would have hoped we’d aim higher. I think we’d still be lacking a quality attacking midfield player in any case.

So I wouldn’t say ‘happy’, but at least some of the positions would be strengthened. I still have serious doubts we’ll even secure the players you list, though.

      • Dillon Tovak

        Bryan is going abroad.

    • Danimal

Reasonably happy after expectations being set so low. But most of all, amazed.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

    Fatso`s asset stripping,
he`ll pocket the money along with the TV income then flop Newcastle to Blondie for £300m & walk away with £400m plus
    just a thought
    🐷🐖🐷

    • panther

      if thats what it takes

    • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Buying a player is not asset stripping.

      • mentalman

replacing an £8million player with a £3million player makes good sense if the money is reinvested but in our case it’s disappearing so you could class that as asset stripping

        • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

We didn’t sell Mbemba for £8m but I take your point IF Rafa trusted Mbemba, he clearly didn’t.

          • MP01

Always felt Mbemba had a big error in him and when he played it was a matter of if not when that error came and cost us a goal!! That said, arguably the same could have been said for Lascelles who under the watchful eye of Rafa is (in my humble opinion) one of the best english centrebacks in the game…. (move over Harry Maguire…)

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

I think in Rafa’s eyes, Lascelles was always prepared to knuckle down and learn. He’s very impressive in that way. Mbemba, as you say, had a mistake in him. He really had to be helped through games although pace got him out of trouble, the English game is one that exploits defenders who switch off.

          • MP01

Yeah otherwise Lascelles wouldn’t have been given the captaincy. Exploit defenders that switch off? Chris Smalling is still waking up in cold sweats to the though of…. DWIGHT GAYLE running rings around him! haha!

I was just never convinced by Mbemba so its no real loss in my eyes.

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Smalling and Jones are given games at Man u just to try and get them in the shop window. Fortunately, the shop window shows how poor they are.

        • Ram Kishore

Maybe he’s getting his loans back so he could sell it soon..

  • Weyhhadaway

Anybody else read this “Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov is looking to sell his 30% stake in Arsenal” in the bbc gossip column.
Please buy the Toon. Please please please.

    • Peaky

Aye but as long as he leaves the novichuk at home….

      • Alex

I’d be much happier if he brings a drop or two to the negotiation table, and sprinkles Fatty with it.

    • Martin Rooney

As in Usmanov who is peeved that Kroenke won’t match his ambition to put money and spend tens of millions, yes very yes please

  • 1957

Ryder and his team will be claiming they told you about this transfer first, followed by 20 out of contract players we could still sign after the window has closed

  • Mrkgw

Think our last Swiss international was Marc Hottiger.

    • Mxpx

Mbabu played for the u21s I think and could play for the senior squad

  • Jezza

Sell a 21 year old midfielder for £10.5 million and replace him with a 29 year old on a free transfer. Sell a young defender for £7 million and replace him for an older player for £3 million. No doubt about it, there’s some great team building going on at NUFC this summer.

    • Megatron1505

      You spelled asset stripping wrong.

      • Jimmy_toons

        You spelled?

        • Megatron1505

          Oh hey, fuckoff

        • Jezza

Spelled is correct. Both spelled and spelt are perfectly acceptable in the English language.

    • Wor Lass

I think the jury`s out on whether anyone`s actually older than Mbemba – including Leazes!

      • Jezza

I thought that was Obafemi Martins.

        • Dillon Tovak

Mbemba looks like floyd mayweather who’s in his forties 😂

    • Ram Kishore

Jezza, Fabian is only 26 he isn’t old.. Yes the signings aren’t exciting but it’s better than nothing
Ki may turn out good or poor only time will tell..
Everyone expected a player like Sturaro .. As usual we were priced out..
I just hoped we had signed Plee

      • Jezza

What do you mean by priced out? We’ve got £100 million+ of television money as well as £40 million+ transfer profits since Rafa came to the club. The money is there. Clubs like Brighton, Fulham and Bournemouth are spending big so why are NUFC scraping round with the transfer budget of an average third division club?

      • TheFatController

We weren’t priced out. Priced out is when a club doesn’t want to sell so places the valuation above the market value, or you just can’t find the money to meet a fair market valuation due to being a smaller club.

Whereas we just won’t spend what a player is worth. Hence release clauses and free transfers are our route.

        • Ram Kishore

Haha sorry, thanks for pointing out the mistake..

    • Jate Legend

I dunno Jezza, on pure money comparisons yes. You could also say merino was inexperienced and injury prone whereas ki is experienced and looked good in patches for Swansea, has an understanding with shelvey. You could also say mbemba wasn’t good enough and schar deserves his chance, he would’ve cost more without the release clause. I don’t think they are bad deals in and of themselves, the problem is were beating around the bush again. We need to spend big on striking talent and we are messing around making peripheral improvements or downgrades, depending on how you see it.

  • Wezza

Is he any good? Is he an upgrade? We are still selling and buying on the cheap still making a profit. Where this profit goes? We know.

  • Superdooperhooper

Why do seagulls have wings? So they can beat ashley and charnley to the tip

  • robbersdog

If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

    • Paul Patterson

      Charnley?

  • Rob

Sorry if I don’t get excited about a defender who plays for a team who just got relegated.

Rather see a youth player given the chance than waste £3 million that could be put towards the striker we desperately need.

    • Jezza

Well we’ve got a free transfer midfielder from a relegated team so at least there’s consistency.

I’m afraid £3 million won’t buy the steam off a decent striker’s cack these days.

    • Billmag

Did you get excited when we signed Lejeune.

    • Dillon Tovak

Liverpool don’t seem to mind Wijnaldum.

      • Mxpx

Agreed and didn’t our captain lacelles and kingpin midfielder shelvey get relegated too?

      • Martin Rooney

You sure, he’s either out in the next few weeks or next year, now surplus to requirements

  • Awaymag

This guy is a good signing for us, I hope the money we are saving by signing him and Ki on the cheap to replace thingy and watshisface will be spent on a new striker..

    • Jezza

The money saved will go where it always goes. Straight into Fatso’s pocket. There will be no new striker.

      • Awaymag

Yoshinori Muto is on his way to Newcastle and will sign for QPR later on today

        • Jezza

Yes losing out on transfer targets to teams a division below us is about the level Ashley has reduced this club too.

        • Jate Legend

          Hahaha

    • Jate Legend

This is what I would be thinking if I thought the cash would be reinvested. If it is reinvested, great deals, I think ki and schar could be upgrades. If it isn’t reinvested, we may have marginally better players but we’ve wasted time and missed where we need to strengthen so Ashley can pocket even more cash. Time will tell, but I think I know what most of us are thinking.

  • TheFatController

I notice that in the World Cup commentary they pronounced him like’Cher’

So I guess we found someone, we’ll have to believe, and can’t turn back time…

    I’ll get my coat.

    • Dillon Tovak

Surprised he didn’t sign for Sunderland amongst the gypsies, tramps and thieves.

      😂😂😂
      (Harsh but I couldn’t resist)

      • TheFatController

I actually knew that that reply would come from a regular

Whereas Monkseaton /Ben Jones/ ghostrider I expected to reply with ‘Cher would have done a cover of ‘Pompey, mackems, and Leeds’ without a remix by DJ Ashley.

  • Vodkamagpie

Besides the top 6, Newcastle have spent more on transfer fee’s than most teams in England in the past 4 seasons. I still don’t understand why there is so much hatred for Ashley, if fans can just look at the blatant figures , you might start questioning yourself

    • Mxpx

Yes let’s compare newcastle to “most teams” in England of course we’ve spent more than Morpeth however let’s compare us to another Premier league club in terms of our net spend then lets ask what their gates are vs ours?

      • Jezza

Don’t feed the troll, lads. Just block him.

      • Vodkamagpie

Is net spent important? . Is it fair to say that players sold from Newcastle are mainly in installment amounts, which surely has massive side affects in this so called important net spending

    • Jimmy_toons

And how much money have we got in from transfers?
If you don’t understand why there is so much hatred for Ashley, then you don’t understand do you.

      • Vodkamagpie

Spent around 210, received around 140, in past 4 seasons. Not bad, considering Ashley doesn’t spend any money according to most fans.

    • TheFatController

If only we could all live in your simplistic, specifics get generalised world….

  • mentalman

I’ve just read a Spanish football expert describe him and he sounds exactly the same as mbemba

  • Lewis SG

Stoke signed Kevin Wimmer for £18million, NUFC signs Schar for £3million.

What a steal considering how crazy prices have gone these days.

    • Jezza

Or rather what a damning indictment of what this club has been reduced to under the fat greedy pig. A newly relegated club can buy a player for more than our club record transfer fee while NUFC with all the Premiership television money that Stoke have missed out on have to sell a player for £7 million to fund the purchase of one for £3 million.

  • Bowlsey

We’re gonna spend upwards of £4million on a player?! Woah there, Mike! Don’t go breaking the bank! What a coup for the club!

All misery induced sarcasm aside, why the hell didn’t we just keep Mbemba?!

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

Another cheep shirt filler from Carr`s Diary,
why is he so cheap, why was no other club interested in him.
Downgrading of the squad continues under the Pig

    • MP01

To be fair, it was a relegation release fee. I don’t imagine he would be so cheap had, Deportivo stayed up.

That said, your sentiment is correct. Rafa having to wheel and deal and buy cheaper than he sells to build up funds is nothing short of a joke and is not a sustainable model for growth! but then we knew the Fatman doesnt want that anyway!
