Easy question this morning, ‘England win 2018 World Cup or Newcastle win League Cup – What would you choose?’

It is a easy question to ask when everything is hypothetical but this summer is turning everything on its head.

Gareth Southgate and his players progressing with minimum fuss to the World Cup semi-finals, thanks to a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Sweden.

With a very winnable semi-final against Croatia to look forward to on Wednesday night, a first final for the national team in 52 years is very much a possibility.

If successful, France or Belgium will be the other finalists, both of which are very good teams but not unbeatable.

The country is having a ball, coming together with a united dream, the football could really be coming home…but would you swap all of that for Newcastle winning the League Cup?

Would you take victory for Newcastle in the 2019 League Cup, over national triumph in the 2018 World Cup?

You would need to be knocking on 60 to have any kind of a decent recollection of either Newcastle or England winning a trophy, so most of us can’t say we have see one or the other, so happy to forego seeing either thing happen.

We dream of seeing Newcastle winning a trophy, any trophy, but would you give it up for the nation?

Speaking to a Manchester United supporting mate in the pub during yesterday’s win over Sweden, he thought I was joking when I said many Newcastle fans wouldn’t go for the World Cup option.

How can you explain to somebody who has seen their club win so many trophies, what it would mean to see your club win anything for the first time?

So what would you select if you had the choice? Vote below please and we’ll bring the result later.

That’ll be interesting to see if there are any Northumbrians or Geordies left…. I’m probably the last I guess.

As BBC Look North from Newcastle now broadcasts only news of Yorkshire I guess were dead when a Newcastle United Mag writer comes up with loyalty to a Country which was… and has never been loyal to us, from the 11th century Norman Harrying of the North to the Reformation and political confiscation to the Thatcher decimation.

Then again I don’t suppose a writer called Van der Velde (Porter Smithfield and the rest) or Jensen and any of your aliases from the South West Shire Counties has any Celtic Reiver blood coursing through them and like second generation Geordies are loyal to London misrule!….

…. Cant expect Geordie to rise again……No sense of ‘otherness’ that we grew up with!

Don’t like cup competitions at all, they prove nothing but triumph for a moment in time.

    • Callum

Normally agree with most things you say on here, but you come across as a right conspiracy theorist here pal.

      • Leazes.

        What conspiracy?

The Mag is owned by Mark Jensen, the Chief writer is a bloke called Simon Van der Velde, they write under pen names mostly emanating from the south west. I like debunking conspiracy not creating it, finding the truth behind things by researching a little bit deeper Callum….

Bit of educated guesswork I guess from your name that one of your parents are catholic or charver or both.

        • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

Does it really matter if his name is based in some old fashioned notion of imaginary friends? We’ve come along way since caring about religion, skin colour etc.

If you want to maintain some interbreeding cult of pureness, well high six to you but leave others out if it.

        • Leazes.

…. and no David that’s not what I was saying at all, just mourning a time that has passed, and denouncing the homogenisation of ‘Englishness’ around the home counties which has largely been defined by the southern power base of London along with the marginalisation of the true North.

When you have local BBC tv saying its great news that the tour de France is coming to our region only to find out they mean Yorkshire its perplexing because its not our region…. we’ve been unceremoniously lumped in with the midlands!

        • Callum

So someone questions your opinion and you go on a personal attack based on a name, you are retarded mate 😂.

          • Leazes.

            Its true then.

          • Callum

About as true as you are an actual football fan, sure you just come on here for confrontation, bullied at school maybe?

    • robbersdog

We’re all just flies sucking on the dunghill of life.

      • Leazes.

        Speak for yourself.

Most Geordies have a touch of Viking in them, Celtic blood is for the West of these islands to be ruled by the rest of us. Funny that it was Sunderland who aligned themselcth with the Celts.

  • Mayor Vaughn

    Toon every single time.

  • Leicester Mag

Well one team is actually trying to win a competition another isn’t so somewhat a pointless question

  • Big Al 1967

Who are the 38% voting England success instead of the lads (you know, the team we support day in day out) actually winning a trophy. I have yet to come across a TRUE Newcastle fan who would put England ahead of NUFC

    • MetalMickey

You answered your own question there. Those votes won’t be from Geordies!

    • Leazes.

Uni Students from Manchester…. like those in Times square

      • SuperDesHamilton

Imagine all these faux England football fans got behind the toon at away games & driving Ashley out. They’d rather jump on a band wagon and throw plastic pints about unfortunately

        • Leazes.

They’re real fans all right …..probably the rugby and cricket mob from the University Student land, stakeholders in the middle class empire of the mind, ex servicemen and assorted yobs.

You know when the TV want a quote from United fans they hover around SJP where you are more likely to find students who’ve come from elsewhere and are studying here, you can tell they’re not United fans but they usually answer the questions they are asked anyway.

          • SuperDesHamilton

Correct it’s always a student or someone from over the water. Shame it’s never a proud west ender born & bred like myself

          • Monkseaton Magpies

Monkseaton Branch has some the finest supports in it’s ranks as does the Peterlee branch.

          • SuperDesHamilton

How would you know? You support Man Utd

    • Kev Newcastle England

      Great post

    • GeordieZebra

      Bang on

  • Monkseaton Magpies

Newcastle to beat Spurs or England win the World Cup no brainer.

  • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

I really hate these polls, it makes us look parochial but you go on any otyer club forum be it Portsmouth, plymouth, Derby or Chelsea they will opt for club glory over national victories and tbph I’d go for guaranteed survival next season than a WC win but of course, it’s not Inter-related and the poll is meaningless.

It would be great to get to a WC final.

  • Paul Patterson

At least come up with two things where one can go against the other. You may as well say- Who do you want to see do better, Nico Rosberg or Tiger Woods . .

    • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

If it’s a way of getting clicks to the polling site, at least be relevent. Phone in now, inclusion within the single market of an FA cup win, let’s hear your views, vote now 0898….

  • Toon

This click baiting is going beyond the joke now, very poor but for Porter, top work

  • Rich Lawson

No contest, the celebrations on Tyneside, if we actually won a proper cup would far outstrip the rest of the country for the worldy ! What’s the cup bonus this year Ashley ?

  • Wor Lass

I only clicked on this to make sure it was Porter! F… O.., Porter!!

  • Weyhhadaway

No brainer, Toon every time. For all of the negative reasons everyone on here, including myself have said about the England set up.

  • Steven05

I’ve watched the clips of the ‘fan parks’ celebrating when England score. It’s my opinion but up and down the country it just looks a little staged, forced, fake. Compare it you when your club score/win. It also brings out the greatest football fans (you see them for few weeks every two years), and no mention of footballers are overpaid, football is stupid etc. We now live in a fake country which lives on vanity and attention, fuelled by social media

Newcastle United is everyday. I have one team, one club

I’d rather Newcastle won a corner than England won anything

    • Soldier

A true football fan would support both.

      • Leazes.

A true Partizan has one team!

        • TheNutJob

you`ll be dancing if we win the World Cup

          💃 💃 💃 💃

    • Desree

Were you around for Italia 90 and Euro 96? Same vibe then.

  • Soldier

England have a decent chance of winning the World cup, Newcastle have no chance of winning an egg cup. when was the last time we reached the last 4 in any competition.

  • WildBill

No brainer, Toon to win anything over the National team.

The feel good factor on Tyneside if we ever win a thing would make the England celebrations look lame by comparison.

  • TheNutJob

what a daft question, is the Fat Gringo about to buy the players needed to win a cup. if England win the World Cup i`ll be happy, i was brought up to be patriotic and i`m not about to slate my national team for some idiot who pens articles like this on the Mag

  • Mxpx

Newcastle to win the Premier league or the champions league and my answer changes but I’d rather we win the world Cup both are possible (although champions league clearly won’t be next season) I believe neither will happen but I think the world Cup is alot more likely
