Newcastle United have received a bid of £10m for Dwight Gayle, according to reports on Saturday.

Stoke City have been linked with the forward since relegation and are said to want him to spearhead their promotion challenge.

The Mail say that the bid has gone in but that it is expected that this is only the first stage of a bidding process with Newcastle expecting more.

They paid that £10m figure to Crystal Palace two years ago and with both transfer inflation and the striker’s form since, he is surely worth significantly more than that.

Dwight Gayle may have only got six goals last season in the Premier League but 23 in the Championship despite only 26 starts, is brilliant at that level.

Like all transfer stories you treat with caution and unless he is going to be allowed to make a decent number of signings, you can’t imagine Rafa Benitez being happy to sell his only decent out and out striker/goalscorer.

The Mail say that Stoke boss Gary Rowett wants to have Dwight Gayle and Benik Afobe as his striker pairing,

Stoke will receive over £41m in parachute payments this coming season and look set to have a good go at getting back first time.

Gayle is only 27 and when you consider Middlesbrough paid £15m for Britt Assombalonga a year ago, the Newcastle striker must be worth at least the same.

  • Jonathan Gibson

It would be a disaster to sell that lad for £10m or £15 for that matter, may not be in the starting 11 next season but certainly a quality squad player to keep hold of.

    • Leazes.

Nonsense…. a he’s championship level player and valued at the correct level.

      • JonMag

we bought him for the championship & i thought we`d sell him last summer, in fact Rafa would have if he`d got a replacement.
if a championship club does buy him i`ve no doubt he`ll score & score high

        • Albert Stubbins

          Is the correct answer.

          • TheNutJob

            it is Albert

      • Mrkgw

        Agreed Leazes.

        • Leazes.

          Well done

          • Mrkgw

Unless our club are planning another relegation then time to let him go. Along with Joselu, Manquillo, Murphy, Darlow. I’m not even sure that Atsu will be able to add consitency to his game.

  • Polarboy

15 million and for definite they can have him. We’re going to need to need all the money we can muster from player sales if Rafa’s going to be able bring up the level of the squad sufficiently.

    • Danimal

It doesn’t matter if we sell a player for a billion. There will be some obscure reason why the money isn’t available. And the usual suspects will be on here, trying to sound knowledgeable about amortisation and exceptional onerous expenses…as long as we still have the exceptionally odious owner.

  • Toonrobbybobson

Sell for 15m. He will get Stoke the Championship title and secure Prem footy again.

We need to improve squad quality up top.

However as ever big IF that ashley might think Armstrong will fill the void :-(

    • Mrkgw

Maybe Armstrong will be given a chance. ‘If’ he gets that then it’s very much a case of now or never for him. Until his heroics with the England u21s, I genuinely thought that his time was well and truly up at St James.

      • Big Al 1967

As much as we want Armstrong to succeed, I just don’t see him as a Premier League player.
Yes he was successful at Blackburn and Coventry in League 1 and has done well with the under 21s, however while he started well at Barnsley in the Championship after the initial first month or so he struggled to even get a game with them with a number of questions raised about his attitude
I would be absolutely delighted to be proven wrong but if he hasn’t made it now he never will, certainly not at the top level

        • Mrkgw

You may just be right. Personally, I’m a bit disappointed at the intention to sell Mitro but Rafa seems to have made up his mind as may well be the case with Armstrong. Time will tell.

  • TheNutJob

is Mitro worth twice as much as Dwight, two very different strikers but both can score for fun in the championship. £15m and Fatty will sell him.
we`ll be left with the Hoss
    😂😂😂
    🐎 🐎 🐎

  • ghostrider

Sell Gayle and replace with Armstrong.
Make Armstrong an integral part of the squad this season coming whilst we add two strikers, assuming Mitrovic is surplus to Rafa’s requirements.
As for Joselu….sell him if possible or just use him as a fill in grafter.

    • SuperDesHamilton

Armstrong isn’t good enough simple as. He won’t play for Newcastle, that’s from a coach at the club. Him being a ‘geordie’ really clouds people’s judgement

      • ghostrider

He’s good enough to have as a squad player to use in emergencies.
He might not become a first team regular or then again he might.
Nobody will ever know unless he’s played with a decent team around him.

        • SuperDesHamilton

He’s not enough simple as. Bangs them in for fun in league 1 & couldn’t hack the league above with Barnsley. I’ve been told by a coach he is r good enough him or Aaron’s & they’ll be sold

          • ghostrider

Did he get in ahead of Abraham for England under 21’s?
The lad is good enough in the right team.
Whether he can get the chance to do that and be played in his proper role would be down to who is willing to take that chance.

How many have been washed away as not being good enough, only to be good enough?
Yeah there was plenty that didn’t but we’ll never realise anything if we don’t have a go. Especially if we are short on players in his position.

          • SuperDesHamilton

He’s not good enough simple as, Abraham showed he isn’t PL quality so that’s absolutely no indication of how good he is. Although Abraham scored in the Championship Armstrong didn’t. But I’ll let you think he is good enough despite him showing absolutely nothing to suggest other wise

          • ghostrider

How can you say he’s not good enough?
Don’t use playing in lower leagues as a yardstick.
You tell me how you know he’s not good enough. Or won’t be good enough?

          • SuperDesHamilton

From what I’ve seen he’s not good enough, can’t cut it at lower level & he’s small. Height doesn’t matter if you bring something to the table, he’s brings absolutely nothin at all to the table. I’m sorry if my opinion upsets you. Like I said a know a coach who works for the toon & like he said he isn’t good enough & their trying to sell him

          • ghostrider

With what Rafa’s been putting up front I’d say he’s more than good enough.

          • SuperDesHamilton

So you’d start him over Gayle would you?

          • ghostrider

            Yep, I would.

          • SuperDesHamilton

            Are you Adams dad?

          • ghostrider

            Are you?

  • Albert Stubbins

Twelve million and it would be good business for all parties concerned. If and it’s a very big if the money from this and the mitro sale is reinvested into the team then Rafa could bring a couple of quality players into the team. Real quality is what we’re lacking in the attacking final third.

    • Sickandtired

But you know the facts – the club sells in installments.

      • Mr wobert

Ah,as they say,it’s death by a thousand cuts.

  • Lhc#Freetommyrobinson

If it’s stoke, straight swap for shaquiri.

    • Jate Legend

I agree with your comment. You’re a pr1ck for your username.

      • Lhc#Freetommyrobinson

😂 never have cared what people think about me all me life. That’s your opinion fair enough.

  • jack

Take the money and get rid

  • jack

His record in premiere before he came to us was dire , always been just a championship level player I’d snap there hands off before they change their mind

  • Foggy

I’ll take 10 mill if they also take Joselu as well.

    • 1957

I can’t see Stoke (or anyone) taking the Hoss of our hands even for free… he’s another one who will see out his contract before we are rid of him

      • Paul Patterson

Might be of use to the Mackems..

      • Danimal

Well Stoke bought him once before so they have form. To be fair, his contribution might well have been the difference between staying up and going down, so £5m well spent.

  • Paul Patterson

In a word- ‘No!’ £15m+ and we can talk deals . .

  • thewildchimp

Haggle, but if it doesn’t work – sell for £10m. That’s about his value. Any fast forward would have reached double figures in the Championship with Shelvey’s magic passes.

  • Desree

Stoke thought Joselu was worth 5m, they laughed at our initial offer. F$ck em, Dwight Gayle could be worth 120m to them if he helps them get back into the prem

  • SuperDesHamilton

Sell 100000%….if we have a replacement. Where’s shefki Kuqi

  • Philippines

    I would take it.

  • NUFCDan

Selling Gayle and Mitro and getting no one in to replace them seems like a good plan for Ashleys back pocket.
