If there was one unwanted player that looked a certainty to be shifted out of Newcastle United, it was Matz Sels.

After a successful year at Anderlecht on loan, the keeper agreed personal terms on a five year permanent contract some weeks ago with the Belgium club, a price agreed between the clubs thought to be imminent.

However, reports from Belgium say that there is now zero trust between the two clubs.

Belgian newspaper HLN state that Newcastle United ‘laughed at Anderlecht’s opening bid of 2m euros (£1.75m) and that they invited them to make an improved offer.

When Anderlecht came back with an offer of 2m euros plus small bonus amounts if certain targets are met, HLN say that if anything this made things worse, the Newcastle United hierarchy said to be angry – as they felt their time had been totally wasted by the Belgian club.

Luc Devroe, Anderlecht’s Director of Football, has been in charge of negotiations and the newspaper report that he has stated Anderlecht won’t offer more than what they have already put on the table.

With little/zero trust between the two clubs there looks to be little prospect of a deal, though as always money/desperation talks.

Even if the transfer fee was less than £2m, if Anderlecht have gone anywhere near Sels’ Newcastle wages it will still be a significant amount for them, with no Champions League revenue this coming season.

Another worry now is that Anderlecht yesterday completed a deal for another keeper, Thomas Didillon arriving from Metz, He was originally supposed to be number two to Matz Sels but could find himself with an instant promotion, if Anderlecht want to gamble on him.

It is only eight days until they have their first friendly, so the clock is ticking.

The Mag – Tuesday 12 June 2018:

Whilst the Chancel Mbemba move to Anderlecht is reported to be dead in the water and the defender set to join Porto instead, Matz Sels is set to at last make his move permanent.

Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad says that talks took place on Monday between Anderlecht and Newcastle to finalise the deal, with the player having already agreed personal terms some weeks ago.

The report says that all sides in the negotiations are keen to get things agreed quickly now, with the move set to be announced this week.

The season starts a few weeks earlier in Belgium compared to most other European leagues and Anderlecht have already signed seven new players ahead of pre-season training.

Their first pre-season friendly is only 10 days away (22 June v RWDM) and the Belgian newspaper says Matz Sels wants to be back training with the Anderlecht squad on Monday (18 Jun), ahead of the friendly on the Friday.

They also report that whilst Matz Sels is to come in as number one, Anderlecht are also in talks to bring in Thomas Didillon from Metz, who will be number two to the soon to be former Newcastle keeper.

Maybe this is one deal that will be finalised a little quicker than would otherwise have been the case, if Matz Sels had made the final cut for Belgium’s World Cup squad.

Rafa Benitez can only be helped by the number of unwanted players he can manage to quickly move on in this window.

looks like another numpty Newcastle can`t shift, so he`ll just sit in the hoose picking up £30,000 a week watching the World cup with Jack,
i hear Chancel`s about to complete his £8m move to Porto in the next 24 hours having agreed a 4 yr deal.

  • Paul Patterson

This is how the club above Benitez operate. Be it outgoing transfers, incoming offers, bids to sell the club, etc. Amateurish and if one thing could come from selling the club, at least we may be looked at as a professional outfit rather than the dodgy cowboy club that we have become. Still, what’s good for S****s D****t is good enough for Newcastle United under this ownership . .

    • panther

And very bad for Newcastle United

  • Gianfranco Shola

Wow Ashley, why do you expect a club to pay premium for our 5th choice goalkeeper when we are only interested in absolute knock off bargain buys ourselves?? Joke of a club

    • East Durham Mag

Thats it buy dirt cheap but don’t like other clubs chancing their hand on a bargain. Pathetic really.

      • TheNutJob

i think Newcastle wanted another £500,000 for him which they`ll pay in wages in less than 6 months when he`s back here, nothing makes sense with Fatty & Penfold

        • East Durham Mag

    • Ram Kishore

I thought we didn’t buy him for cheap or for bargain ..
We did invest a big some on Matz sels.. who jus failed to make it going for us..
Now we are trying to recoup as much as possible for a player who’s in his mid 20s,..
Rejecting the offer was the right thing..
This particular transfer is not like those other bargain buys..
He became a 5th choice.. for reasons Rafa should take the blame if he played an instrumental part in bring Sels

  • Rich Lawson

He’s useless, take the £2mil and get him off the wages,he will never play for us again even if he were to come back.

  • TheNutJob

how can you be playing for Russia with a name like Mario Fernandes

    • Leazes.

Just googled it……He has no Russian links but was granted Citizenship by Putin’s Presidential decree so he can play…… its a Zola Budd type thing.

      • TheFatController

Who did she represent at the World Cup?

        • TheNutJob

          you`ll pay for that

          • TheFatController

No, Leazes has a sense of humour. He’s always good value, even when i sometimes disagree on things.

I wouldn’t ask him for online betting tips though..

        • Leazes.

Dunno but she went on to play for Chelsea.

      • panther

Is he wiki leaks or did he off someone for them?

    • SuperDesHamilton

He’s played in Russia long enough to naturalise, same with Guillerme the GK. a Cameroonian RB was about to be called up in to the Russian squad in 2005 but after fans said they’d blow the stadium up if someone who wasn’t white played for Russia.

  • X,WHY,Y MAN.

The ironic thing about it is Newcastle have the gall to be laughing at derogatory bids by clubs for their players when in reality that has been a staple of the “Mike Ashley Nightmare Era” !

    • TheNutJob

like Penfold hoys in a £10m bid for a £20m player

      • Paul Patterson

Youtube ‘Kevin Keegan on Ashley’. He tells an interesting story about how he could have signed Sammy Hyppia in 2008 for £1.25m and reasonable wages- the club offered £500k. It’s been happening for 10 years and still is, but then again, that’s how the rich greedy billionaires stay so- they don’t pay for anything . .

  • mentalman

what does the club think is going to happen, everyone knows he’s virtually worthless to the club as rafa won’t use him so why not try with a low bid.

We have a long list of players who we will get peanuts for because clubs know rafa won’t use them

  • panther

How can we be angry? We do that all the time

  • Leazes.

    ITV coverage is rubbish

    • TheNutJob

      always is

    • pedrodelgardo

Apart from Hoddle who is the best explainer of tactics by miles, I agree.

      • Leazes.

Get stuffed…. Rutland Weekend Television, I mean London Weekend Television covers it, full of C**kneys…. Hoddle what an absolute tramp!

        • Dillon Tovak

You could tell even Gary Neville was bored of Ian Wright after 5 minutes.
How does he keep getting work, he’s a mess.

    • TheNutJob

at least the England game is on the BBC, i fink

  • SuperDesHamilton

We’re the leaders in pathetic laughable bids!

  • Cockneytrev

Ashley has cheapened every brand that he has bought, it’s his stock in trade,,
we were once a well respected football club, we are now looked on as laughing stock,,
He has given this club nothing,, we have a worse playing squad, we have more debt than when he took over, the academy is in a worse state, we own less land, the only thing better is the manager,,,

    • TheTradge

Actually the club’s debt is probably the only thing he’s managed to sort out since 2007, sadly any incoming finances aren’t being reinvested in the squad like they should be!

      • Cockneytrev

When he took over we can we owed £64 mil structured with Barclays, we now owe him over £140 mil, since 2007 it has never been cheaper to borrow money, the money that has come in from tv would more than covered any debt, we would also have had proper commercial revenue stream unlike now, if you still think he has done us a favour, Google business finance, companies have had structured loans as cheap .45% fixed for two years, rising to .85% over 5 years, we could easily have arranged loans at very favourable rates,,
he has used this debt as a barrel to bend us over, if he had used his business acumen to better the football club and not to further the reatail empire he runs, IMO we would have never beeN relegated and would have been mid table to top 4 most seasons,,
he took over a world renowned brand and systematically stripped it of assets while using its branding to make his company known worldwide…..

        • Paul Patterson

My problem with the ‘debt’ is that if it’s there, it’s not getting paid off. We aren’t spending enough in the transfer market, the ‘debt’ isn’t getting paid off to make the price of the club cheaper, so where the hell is the money going? I wouldn’t be happy with things, but if for every player leaving for big money, say 10% was taken to get down the ‘debt’ then fair enough, sadly . .

          • Cockneytrev

I wish I knew where the money was going,, it’s certainly not on players,,,

          • Mike

aye and the 20% rise in ticket prices?

          • Wezza147

In his back pocket like it has been for years.

  • robbersdog

We laughed at the bid? Well…the joke’s on us, because we’re stuck with him for the time being.

  • nufcslf

I wish more clubs would laugh at the fat moron that runs this pathetic excuse of a football club.

  • Geordieguy

What a bunch of penny pinching bin dippers we’ve got running this club. They want to sell players for fortunes but buy them for nowt . What happened to getting players off the wage bill so they could get new ones in ? Lies

  • panther

Maybe he didn’t sign as he kept dropping the pen

  • Albert Stubbins

yet clubs have been laughing at our derisory offers for years- well eleven years to be precise.

  • Steve Smith

His wages will be costing the club that amount of money if he’s still here for a year.

  • Rich

What if Sels lined up as United’s Number 2 for next season?
What if Dubravka gets injured against Chelsea and Sels steps in and has a worldie?
What if the £1.75m bid for him genuinely turns out to be derisory and he ends up being a £15m+ keeper?

Too many “what if’s” for me, so let’s be realistic…

What if United accepted a realistic bid for a Goalkeeper who had a torrid time in the Championship, instead of letting him stagnate in the reserves, and eventual end up playing for the youth squad, costing us more money than if we’d have flogged him for what he’s REALLY worth?

What if United’s skinflint of an owner had sold up on the cheap last season and we we’re looking at how Rafa was going to do with his £100m+ non-instalment transfer kitty?

It’s all pipe dreams however you look at it.

But as for Derisory? F* him off ASAP, he’s never going to play for us again so cut your losses and get rid you greedy, greedy b*st*rd…..

    Wishful thinking.
