Newcastle United are reported to be watching Sean McLoughlin ahead of an impending potential bid.

The 21 year plays left-back but can also play at centre-back and it is claimed that Newcastle have been scouting him throughout the summer.

Last summer he signed an 18 month contract at Cork City following a trial, the defender having impressed them whilst playing for University College Cork.

At the time, they fought off interest from cubs in the Scottish Premier League and in England’s League One.

Reigning champions Cork City are once again top of the table in the League of Ireland which is played throughout Spring and Summer, though they are set to shortly lose their star player.

Reports in the Irish media say that Newcastle, Liverpool and Everton are all interested in signing Sean McLoughlin after impressing throughout this current season.

Friday night saw Cork stay one point above Dundalk at the top as they beat Bohemians 1-0, McLoughlin played the full 90 minutes as he started his 19th league game of the season.

Interesting to see where the player does end up but at least a transfer story that is more believable than Newcastle allegedly offering £20m for Andros Townsend.

Sean Mcloughlin after signing for Cork City in June 2017:

“I am obviously delighted to be here.

“It will be a step up coming from UCC but I am looking forward to the challenge.

“City have been excellent this year and hopefully I can fit in well.

“It will take a lot of hard work but I am looking forward to it.”

      • JonMag

Mbemba out £8m this kid in 100 grand.

    • Polarboy

Just as well the Nottingham Forest Scouts didn’t have that attitude when they watched Roy Keane. Obviously I’m not saying this kid will be of the same calibre, but there’s been some great players who’ve come from the Irish league. You only have to look at Seamus Coleman in more recent times and players like Paul McGrath and Denis Irwin to see what sort of quality defensive players can be picked up.

      • Ram Kishore

Andy Robertson was playing for some lower league amateur club when a top club in his country picked him up when he was 19

        • Polarboy

Vardy, Ian Wright etc, there’s more than a few great players who’ve been picked up out of obscurity.

          • Geordiegiants

            Sir Les is another.

May be a good squad player. I remember Forest getting Roy Keane in similar circumstances and the groans.
