Gateshead have confirmed that they have signed up a young midfielder from Newcastle United.

Former NUFC star Steve Watson is now manager of Gateshead and he is delighted to have signed up Jack Hunter.

He says that Hunter could have gone for a club higher up the leagues but thinks it is a smart move as the player wants regular football to develop him as a player.

Good to see another of the young players getting picked up elsewhere, Rafa Benitez having decided on a major clearout at Newcastle of reserve team players.

Gateshead FC Official Announcement:

‘Gateshead FC are pleased to announce the signing of former Newcastle United Under 23s midfielder Jack Hunter.

20 year old Hunter was part of the Newcastle United Under 23 side that won the Northumberland Senior Cup.

Gateshead FC Manager Steve Watson:

“What impressed me most about Jack was his attitude.

“He’s been at Newcastle for a number of years and his footballing ability won’t be questioned, but I really liked his mentality and his attitude.

“There’s a lot of lads his age who would look to play as high up the leagues as they can but he came in and he’s had a good chat with us about how important it is for him to get games.

“His mental strength and understanding of what he needs to do to get to where he wants to be and I think this will be a very important year for him.”
