According to an ‘exclusive’ on Monday afternoon, Newcastle United are looking to bring in Jean-Philippe Mateta ahead of the new season.

The young Lyon striker turns 21 in 10 days time and impressed last season when sent out on loan.

The Under 19 French international scored 19 goals in 32 Ligue 2 starts (plus 5 sub appearances) when spending the season with Le Havre.

Lyon are competing in the Champions League next season and hoping to improve on their third place finish in Ligue 1, so it looks as though he will get limited opportunities if staying at Lyon.

Teamtalk report that  Newcastle ‘lead the chase’ for Jean-Philippe Mateta but that other English clubs are also interested, including Leicester and West Ham.

Little doubt that Rafa/NUFC will be looking for value in the transfer window but still difficult to see a player with Mateta’s profile instantly being in contention for Newcastle’s first team squad.

Still, yet another player linked with NUFC this summer, and day we will sign one of them.

  • Leazes.

I think we should make the cups a priority this year.

    • Rich Lawson

Are we one of the two English teams now in the Scottish Challenge Cup then ? Or have they reintroduced the Inter Toto ?

  • Rich Lawson

We need Kenedy back and an established prem’ goal scorer up front,no more daft overseas punts or kiddies with potential !

  • TheNutJob

wonder who`s bright idea this is, i fear Rafa`s patience will be wearing thin

  • panther

I know hes young, but that was a very poor Lige2, and hes not good enough for Lyon, is he gonna be challenging Joselu for his spot on the bench?

    • TheNutJob

    • Clarko

Yeah, no s***t he’s not good enough for Lyon, he would have to be some player to be selected ahead of Depay, Mariano, Traore, Fekir and Cornet.

      • glassjawsh-got-banned

@#$% me, I agree with you

  • Roblee07

I hope is isn’t as laid back as his brother hakuna!

    • CaptainCaveman

      Class :D

  • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

He has a look of Andy Cole in his finishing style – all based on the Dennis Wise scouting machine.

It would be a buy and lend deal as he’s going to need a season or two.

    • Geordieguy

Dennis wise scouting machine ? Yeah that worked out brilliant for Newcastle before

      • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

it was tongue in cheek, the Dennis Wise scouting machine was You Tube

        • Geordieguy

Sorry about that. For on ashley supporter you’ve got a good sense of humour ..I’ll leave you out of my future insults for the vacant lot

          • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

I didn’t take it as an insult, banter is fine.

I’m not an Ashley fan perse BTW, it’s just that I will only get wound up over actual problems not tittle tattle.

We should’ve just kept Thauvin who’s in a very impressive French squad and worth about four times the £9.8m we got for him.

The lad was horribly mismanaged by McClaren and the whole saga was a monumental f*ck-up.

    • Down Under Mag

He was horribly mis-managed here and was never really given a chance to adapt or to settle before being labelled a flop. I saw enough to his game that he had potential, he was just needing time to settle in to the country and adapt his game to the football int he UK. I think he moved too early in fairness but he was never going to fit in when he was labelled a waste after 2 games and then never played again.
