It is all about England tonight.

No conflict in wanting both Newcastle and England to do well!

They finally get their World Cup campaign underway when they take on Tunisia in Volgograd, with a 7pm kick-off.

Belgium scored three second-half goals to eventually overcome Panama in the group game earlier today.

A win for England over Tunisia would surely all but put them through, as it would then leave them only having to beat Panama to make absolutely sure of going through (apart from a freakish set of results).

Tunisia are no mugs though and are ranked 21st in the world, compared to England in joint 12th with Denmark.

Tunisia came through in their qualifying group only a point ahead of Chancel Mbemba and DR Congo, Libya and Guinea making up that group.

Gareth Southgate has named his team and England line up:

Pickford

Walker

Stones

Maguire

Henderson

Trippier

Lingard

Alli

Young

Kane

Sterling

Subs:

Rose, Dier, Vardy, Butland, Welbeck, Cahill, Jones, Delph, Rashford, Loftus-Cheek, Alexander-Arnold, Pope

Gareth Southgate:

“We have been working on a system of play we think suits the players we have available and the style of play we want to implement.

“Everyone at home wants England to win but they want to see them play well and enjoy their football and that’s what I want as a coach.”

Mark Lawrenson prediction:

โ€œThis is a banana skin for England but I don’t foresee any slip-ups for Gareth Southgate’s side.

โ€œPrediction: England 2 Tunisia 0.โ€

Frank has reinvented himself, lets not forget him and Terry p####d, slagging of the yanks at Heathrow the day afta 9/11,should be unforgiveble but he has got a BBC girly as his wife now. What a media friendly couple they make !!!

  • Wor Lass

I care, Rich! I`ll be supporting the lads from afar and winding up my neighbours. The flag`s fluttering bravely “au bord de la rue” – could backfire big time. It was mysteriously covered with a black bin liner after the rugby this year.

I admire your spirit in a distant land, what do your local pals (not the mackems) make of France n Englands chances in the next few weeks ? Given your excellent weather are you or they having a barbie whilst you watch ?

      • Wor Lass

Serious stuff, Rich – feet up on the sofa with a never-ending supply of cold lager and Father`s Day whiskey for afters. The locals reckon the same as many of us – a collection of names that struggle to translate anything into a cohesive team effort. I just feel that Southgate might surprise us, in a good way. I`m usually hopelessly optimistic and invariably wrong, though. The weather, btw, has been awful this year but is improving as of today.

        • Rich Lawson

The weather here has been top for the last couple of weeks apart from one overnight storm with no rain, disappointed to find that no fine wines are involved

          • Wor Lass

Too many of them the last few nights!

        • porciestreet

Southgate might well surprise us all. He might just realised that he’s well off the pace and resign.

          • Wor Lass

Just remind me when was the last time England won their first World Cup group game? It was a mixed performance and we`re too reliant on Kane for the goals but we got a result for a change – despite the referee. I reckon Southgate`s doing OK – who would you replace him with?

  • SuperDesHamilton

Good luck to the lads tonight. I`m about as good as Triple M at predicting but I reckon, as a famous pundit often says, we`ll pagger the Tunisians. Anyone fancy a sweep on how long it takes the commentator to say something about the opposition refusing to dance to England`s Tune (see what I did there?)?

I see some daft beggar at the chronicle has highlighted a story of United fans on their trip to Russia from their social media on twitter….. the only thing is they’re holding a banner with ‘NME’ on it…. no it doesn’t stand for New Musical Express.

If you don’t know NME stands for ‘Newcastle Mainline Express’…. its a ‘firm’…..3 aged hooligans…. probably Brian Standen and his mates!

      criminal

  • Kneebotherm8

Big Al telling Lineker that at this level it’s criminal the chances we’ve wasted……how right he is……oh for a Shearer or Lineker instead of Lingard…we could pay for this amateurish finishing…..

    • porciestreet

And most likely will in the games to follow.

      • Kneebotherm8

We could do with Vardy in for Lingard………much better finisher………we’d have beaten Russia’s 5 goals against Saudi if he’d had those Lingard chances….

  • Dave Mitchison

Had a giggle at the BBC commentary “Henderson playing the ball backwards to send it wide”. If only there was a talented young English midfielder who could pick out a killer forward pass….oh wait there is.

    • thewildchimp

4 3 3 was designed to give edge against 3 5 2. Italians and some other teams with brilliant defenders and midfielders can make the latter work, but I think the lads are gonna get plastered against better teams. Pity.

      • TheNutJob

1st half played well, 2nd went to pot

    • Duh

yeah they will not get away with that against a better team

      • TheNutJob

        to true we won`t

  • TheNutJob

Lineker, an exceptional performance, kidding isn`t he

    • porciestreet

He’s got to come out with that kind of carp to still be in a job. Another golden boy in a nice suit that never says no.

  • Kneebotherm8

Glad that chance fell to Kane……..2 shots on target all night …..2 goals…….Lingard has been finishing like a Jesse all night…….well named…

    • TheNutJob

Shearer like, both can put away their chances

      • Kneebotherm8

        Too true….

        • TheNutJob

wouldn`t mind getting Loftus-Cheek & Kenedy for the Toon

          • Kneebotherm8

As lang as we divvent get the Jesse playing for Engurland tonight……….the Hoss would of scored 2 or 3 of those chances………

          • porciestreet

Trouble is…the FA golden boy makes the selections and for me…he couldn’t pick his nose.
IF ..Lascelles was playing at Liverpool or Chelsea…. he would now be in Russia.
This squad selection stinks of southern bias..as usual.

  • paul mclaughlan

I canโ€™t understand why the video ref wasnโ€™t used. Their pen wouldnโ€™t be given and weโ€™d have gotten two.

    • Kneebotherm8

      I thought rugby tackles weren’t allowed in soccer…………my mistake….

  • SuperDesHamilton

Lingard showing he isnโ€™t good enough for these type of matches, when you have one chance letโ€™s hope it never falls to him. Defence suspect against a fat midfielder, Kane done what was needed. All I wondering around kicking and niggling people because it wasnโ€™t going his way but Shelveyโ€™s temperament is called into question…Henderson was decent but ask a Mackem and he was the been pirlo tonight. Sterling anonymous & Trippier canny. Letโ€™s not kid ourselves about the opponents they were utter garbage

  • Mxpx

I’m going to cut linguard some slack on the basis of this being one bad game for England but suspect he is another player that will not show up for England despite being great for man utd however God knows why sterling gets anywhere near the England team he’s demonstrated time and time again he’s useless at international level I watched Henderson do a pretty good job pinging balls out from the back trying to hit runners with a long ball but as mentioned there is one man who that role was made for sat at home I felt that we deserved the win and we can be negative about only being 2-1 BUT we had 3 penalty shouts go the wrong way and still won so it’ll do…. England really are just like Newcastle never win anything never get penalties and a huge supporter base despite this
