Aleksandar Mitrovic can’t wait for the World Cup to kick-off.

Serbia face Costa Rica, Switzerland and Brazil in Group E and on this form they could give anybody a game.

Playing their final warm-up game against Bolivia, the NUFC striker and his international teammates completely dominated their opponents.

Winning 5-1, Mitro scored three and created one.

His hat-trick goal is one you want to see, bending it around the keeper from outside the box.

The Mag – Saturday 9 June 2018 (Earlier today):

Aleksandar Mitrovic and Serbia had the perfect World Cup send off.

They face Costa Rice in eight days time in their first group match and approach it full of confidence.

It only took Mitro and Serbia two minutes to open the scoring against Bolivia in their final friendly, a header from a corner set-piece.

On 19 minutes it was Ljajic who made it 2-0 and four minutes later it was 3-0 and the second for the Newcastle striker, a right foot shot from inside the box.

Only a few minutes before the break it was Aleksandar Mitrovic the provider, setting up Ivanovic to make it four.

Bolivia got a consolation just after the break but on 68 minutes Mitrovic scored the goal of the match, a right foot effort from outside the box.

The Newcastle forward was subbed straight afterwards and is clearly in rude health as he looks forward to the World Cup campaign kicking off.

The Mag – 8 June 2018:

The Coaches Voice:

Serbia

Star performers

Aleksandar Mitrovic

Forward, 23, Newcastle United

‘Serbia’s main goal threat, Mitrovic scored six times in qualifying to become the top marksman in Group D.

‘The Newcastle striker, who played a huge role in Fulham’s promotion to the Premier League this season, is capable of scoring all sorts of goals but also an excellent focal point for Serbia’s attacks.

‘He is one of only three players in the World Cup squad – alongside Dusan Tadic and veteran defender Branislav Ivanovic – to have more than 10 goals for Serbia.

‘An imposing figure, Mitrovic began his club career at Teleoptik in his native Serbia. Subsequent stints at Partizan and Anderlecht saw him impress enough to earn a move to the Premier League with Newcastle United.

‘He has spent three seasons at Newcastle, but was loaned out to Fulham – with superb success – for the second half of the most recent season.

‘We can expect to see Aleksandar Mitrovic, still only 23, play a key role for his country in Russia.

The target man for the majority of Serbia’s play, he is good at winning the first ball and bringing others into play – he has a good relationship with fellow attackers Tadic and Kostic, from whose deliveries he can be a major aerial threat.’

Tactical set-up:

‘During qualifying, Serbia set up in a 3-4-3 formation and largely played direct into Aleksandar Mitrovic as the focal point.

‘Since Krstajic has taken charge, however, they have switched to a 4-2-3-1 (sometimes 4-3-3) formation and looked to play through the thirds more regularly. This may well be what we see from Serbia in Russia, although don’t be too surprised if they revert to direct play when they face Brazil in their final group game.

‘What hasn’t changed under the new coach is the use and threat of Mitrovic. He still holds play up really well, albeit now slightly more with his feet than his head, and can still be lethal inside the box.’

To watch Aleksandar Mitrovic and Serbia at the World Cup, these are dates and kick-off times.

They are in World Cup Group E:

Serbia v Costa Rica – 17 June 1pm

Serbia v Switzerland – 22 June 7pm

Serbia v Brazil – 27 June. 7pm

Think Mitro is finding his level?

    • JonMag

he scores at every level he plays at

      • Dave Mitchison

I agree, much as I love Rafa I don’t buy into this “Mitro doesn’t fit his style”. I really believe selling him could come back to haunt Rafa.

        • JonMag

          it will

Agreed. Much as I respect Rafa, I genuinely wonder if Alan Shearer would have fitted. Having said that, mind, not even my friends in Serbia reckon the overhead kick was an ‘assist’

  • JonMag

we keep Hosselu & Gayle & sell that guy, makes perfect sense

    • Angelswithdirtyfaces

I think the Hoss is away to League 1

      • JonMag

they must be giving him away then

      • Jonathan Gibson

So you would keep mitro mike?
Do you think he is good enough for the premiership?
I think joselu is also garbage

  • Mrkgw

Letting him leave the club is idiocy. If this were anyone else, Mitros critics would be clamouring for Rafa to sign him. From being cult hero to a section of supporters being glad to see the back of him. I just don’t get it at all.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

      it`s a funny old game

    • Leazes.

He was playing in a friendly against Bolivia…. Hopefully he’ll have a good world cup and we can sell him and get a proper striker with a brain.

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

We haven`t had one of those for a while

      • Mrkgw

Harsh, Leazes. He isn’t that bad a player. Rafa didn’t play him consistently. Yes, he might well have had his reasons but, without knowing the full facts, I can only go on what I’ve seen.

        • Leazes.

I’m afraid I went off him when we were relegated. I really don’t see anything special in him.

          • Mrkgw

Problem is that he didn’t get much of a run in the side. That cup defeat vs Oxford did him no favours but, he seems to be doing a job for Fulham and Serbia. Remember, he did ok in his first season for us albeit, he was a card magnet. Justifiably so as well!

          • Leazes.

If I remember he got red carded and we were relegated.

          • Mrkgw

There were others to blame for our demise. Ultimately, the regime whose lack of investment has been in place throughout this ownership. There has been mismanagement of the side – McClaren did woefully for us. Carver too. All contributed to the clubs relegation (except our loyal support that is).

          • Leazes.

It was largely him being pants though

          • Mrkgw

Come on Leazes, he wasn’t that bad. Cisse was worse. On another note, we need Grealish in the squad. Excellent player – issue now being that Fulham, Spuds, Arsenal and Man U are on the humt. We are always so slow off the mark. Infuriating.

          • Mike Adam

            Wrong again!!!!

          • Mike Adam

Yeah, that is why we were relegated.

      • Lhc#Freetommyrobinson

Don’t understand why anyone would like the condescending Leazes, he should go and follow rugby.

        • Tino11

          Sod off you racist charva.

          • Lhc#Freetommyrobinson

            Comment above for you son.

        • Lhc#Freetommyrobinson

Yawn! Care to elaborate on the racist? If you’ve got nothing intelligent to say, don’t say nothing at all.

    • Andy Mac

I agree its idiocy mainly because of what we’ve got left which is very little in terms of quality or goals

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

    Sell him Asap,
last time we had a striker at a World Cup he came back on crutches.

  • Burt Humperdink

Just goes to show how fans add to the atmosphere of a game that was hard to watch just because nobody was there. Felt like a training ground kick about.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

That`s exactly what these games are just before a World Cup

    • Andy Mac

Tbf it was played in Austria at what was once the ArnieSchwarz stadium

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

I missed 1 game last season, i`m neither for or against Mitro but he`s better than the Hoss & Gayle.
the bottom line is we haven`t got a decent forward at Newcastle & haven`t had one for years

    • Andy Mac

The theory is you sell the carp strikers first and hang on to the one who can score until you find a better one ?

If all we do is ship Mitro out and buy a (hopefully better) striker then we’re not that much further forward if Striker No 1 gets injured/ suspended or whatever else we’re bound to experience. All PL teams should have a minimum of two decent strikers plus some peripherals whereas we’ve got next to nothing now.

  • Scottie Chugger Dearden

he’s scored in the Championship where Gayle was banging them in and he scored a hat trick against the mighty Bolivia! To agree with Dave Mitchison he’s found his level, however why is there a part of me that thinks he’ll be a modern day Mick Harford and come back to haunt us! In Rafa I trust!

  • Aussie Bill

Can you imagine KK or Sir Bobby having Mitro and young Arma out on loan? Raffa has the runs on the board but he seems be all about holding and defence. What a shame he can’t add the traditional Newcastle No 9 into his game. We own two of the best young forwards why not keep them here and spend what money Ashley hands out on weaker links in the team? I am merely a distant spectator and supporter but from here it looks like Newcastle is giving away their best assets and it seems senseless.

  • Natturner26

Remember when Rafa said he hopes Mitro goes out on loan and scores 20 or 25 goals so his value would increase? An absurd comment because those numbers would be almost impossible in less than half a season plus Rafa was saying he would still sell him even if he achieved the impossible target.

Since then Mitro has scored 18 goals. Newcastle’s entire team has scored 16.

    • Clarko

‘Rafa was saying he would still sell him even if he achieved the impossible target.’

      Never happened.

      • Natturner26

“Hopefully he will score 20 or 25 goals. We will be happy with that.
        He would have more value.”

        • Clarko

Nowhere in that quote does Benitez say that he will sell Mitrovic and right after that sentence Benitez said:

“He will come here and say…‘I am a new player and you have to trust me because I have scored 25 goals.’

          Fine, no problem.”

          • Natturner26

            Covering his slip.

          • Clarko

Again, nowhere in that quote does Benitez say that he will sell Mitrovic.

    • JonMag

he was always going to be sold no matter what & we`re left with 2 strikers that aren`t worth Jack schitt. all Nufc`s current forwards are not good enough for the premier league.

      • Geordiegiants

And you think Mitro is? Did you watch the play off final game?

    • Nart

Talk about taking a quote out of context to try and abuse Rafa and Mitro. Are you a Newcastle fan?

  • robbersdog

Bolivia? If Sunderland was an international team, that’s who they’d be.

    • JonMag

any other Newcastle forward score 3 & make 1, not a [email protected]@king hope in hell

      • Geordiegiants

Against those Gayle would run riot.

        • MichaelMaximusMoose

On last seasons form he wouldn`t

          • Geordiegiants

He didn’t score that many this season in the prem, but the point I’m making is Gayle would run riot at that level of football Mitro is scoring them in.

          • Natturner26

The going to the World Cup level? Mitro is our only player going so we won’t be able to properly compare them and you can keep spouting that he’s found his level.

          • Geordiegiants

So your trying to say going to the World Cup makes you a good player?
That makes Saeid Ezatolahi a world beater then? It’s sillyness, Mitro is doing exactly the same as Gayle was at the same level, up a level and down a level.
They are both shyte all of our strikers are shyte, people keep making a case for Mitro, lovely lad shyte footballer.

          • Natturner26

Roy Hodgson was impressed by him.

Could a strong World Cup change your mind?

          • Geordiegiants

Everyone’s mind can be changed about a player, SloMo for instance. What I’m saying is, he has to do it at a higher level, as that is where we are hopefully going 😬. The championship and second rate Internationals are not the sort of players I want to see playing for us.

          • Foggy

I find that hard to believe.

          • Geordiegiants

He proved it in our promotion season.

        • Mike Adam

          Yeah, you know it all.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

The great Obese One will sell Mitro for £20m & replace him with a striker that costs £10m,
he certainly won`t sanction £20m buys

    • Liam Hogg

      10 mil. That much 😂

  • Givingupontoon

Rafa likes to hit on the counter don’t think Mitro is capable in the prem of that, scoring upto 10 in the prem maybe, scoring upto 10 in rafas style of play no chance. When Mitro played for us he was lazy jogging about tosselu couldn’t hit a barn door but other than scoring he did what Rafa told him to. I would keep Gayle as a impact sub and flog the rest 1 on loan and a 15m striker is a possibility. No doubt would have been relegated with a dif manager with this team.

  • Geordiegiants

That match is like watching Southshields against Scotswood club.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

I thought you`d be over the Moon, your favourite player having a field day
      😂😂

    • Mike Adam

Why do you need to bad mouth Mitro at every turn? Don’t you have anything better to do??? The strike for his third goal is pure quality no matter who you are playing against. Why do you feel it necessary? Why such a hatred for him?

      • Geordiegiants

I don’t hate him I actually think he is great as a person, it’s doesnt change the fact he is a shyte player.

        • Mike Adam

You mean your “opinion”, that is all it is and ever will be.

      • gallowgate26

Quality? Yes. Space and time in the PL?…. No..

        • Mike Adam

Yep, no player gets time and space to take shots in the PL.

  • Leicester Mag

Here’s a theory a 23 yr old international striker with an unbroken run of games is a far better player than a 20 yr old thrown straight into an unbalanced team managed by McNugget

  • Liam Hogg

Benítez doesn’t fancy him simple as, no matter how much we want him to it’s not going to happen, get over it

    • Dave Mitchison

And how long do you think Benitez will be here? Serious question, Ashley won’t back him. He will run down the last year of his contract and then we will be without him and without a potentially good striker.

      • Liam Hogg

We haven’t got a good striker Joselu, Mitrovic & Gayle aren’t good enough

  • Dave Mitchison

If Mitro is sold then the chances of getting someone better are slim if not non existent. Sell hoss sell Gayle. Go with Mitro Perez Armo plus a n other.

    • Leazes.

      Shola is available!

      • Dave Mitchison

        Leaves, that makes me sad.

  • stigma

Maybe the difference here are the players around Mitro (Ivanovic, Kolarov, Matic, Tadic, etc) compared to the one we’ve got in our squad.

  • gallowgate26

Crikey, haven’t seen many goals like those in a Newcastle shirt… O_O

  • Mal

Watching Mitro at Fulham he seemed to have matured as a person – not charging about, making stupid challenges and getting booked. He’s still young. I’d like to see him given another go with us though doubt it will happen. Best we can hope for is that Rafa is given the proceeds to buy a replacement – ‘every last penny’.
