Watford 2 Newcastle 1  – Saturday 5 May 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle going down to a poor defeat to Watford, a top half finish now definitely in the balance.

A dreadful first half and at least a reaction and improvement after the break. Small positives.

Jamie Smith:

“Sorry s… show continues in spite of a much improved second half.

“No desire from these players to finish as high as they can.

“Dwight Gayle looks like he’ll never score another goal and those given a chance to impress wasted it.

“After designs on 8th place we’ll likely slide to about 14th after an unprofessional switch off post-Arsenal.

“Players on the beach without question, and with people trekking to London midweek for another dead game at Wembley of all places, hopefully they’ll be shamed into some sort of coherence.”

Ben Cooper:

“First half was awful, last half hour much better.

“Dubravka did well, Shelvey top class, Diame a powerhouse, but not many of the others can look at today and say they did their bit.

“Yedlin and Ritchie did their bit when they came on but that says as much about Manquillo and Murphy as it does their replacements.

“Credit to their boss for playing two strikers.

“They battered us until half time and they got their rewards for being bold.

“We need a bit of that sometimes.

“We don’t have much up front and we don’t go for it very often.”

David Punton:

“Every time this club has looked up the table this season we’ve hit a bad run.

“Thankfully, this latest has all come after the Lord Mayor’s show, with Premier League safety in the bag.

“But that doesn’t mean I’m over the moon that we keep getting beat.

“Undone today by a poor first half showing in the baking heat, and chasing it at 2-0 down before Dubravka, to his great credit, saved that ludicrous spot kick.

“I was worried when I saw the names of Manquillo and Murphy on the team sheet. The squad, overall, remains lacking in some quality.

“It may send a message that NUFC have to invest this summer but it comes at the cost of losing games.

“Are we going to win another game this season?”

Paul Lyon:

“I joked that we might finish 10th even if we lost the last 5 games.

“I didn’t seriously want the theory tested…

“Maybe this is part of Rafa’s master plan to ensure adequate funding is granted in the summer…

“Gave ourselves a mountain to climb in the 2nd half after a calamitous 1st, decent finish by Perez.”

Jack Watt:

“I haven’t managed many aways and wondering why I made the effort for this one.

“Especially as not many of the players turned up.

“I think today tells us two things…

“When the team drops below their best ‘intensity’, they aren’t good enough.

“Also, we have just about got a first eleven but after that there is very little quality.

“This summer we need four or five to come into the first team, four or five current first teamers to become regular subs, with a lot more than four or five having to find new clubs.”

Nat Seaton:

“Haven’t had many good experiences going to an away game, when it is the last home game of the season for the other team, and this was no exception!

“Second half was better than the first…but still a disappointing performance overall.

“Here’s hoping for better things at Wembley on Wednesday…”

Jamie Swan:

“Five one on aggregate this season against a bang average Watford team.

“Would have been more if not for Dubravka saving the penalty.

“Too late waiting for the second half with a bit of fight, after playing in flip flops and Speedos in the first half.

“All the plaudits in the world go to Rafa and the boys for staying up – but the mutual back slapping needs to stop pronto, or we are going to have a pretty desperate end to the season.

“Wake up boys.”

Toon Bano:

“It is a real shame how we look to be finishing the season.

“Likely there will be a couple of more defeats to finish it off.

“However, with the likes of Southampton, Swansea and Huddersfield terrified of going down over the next week, we can be grateful to watch on and look forward to next season.”

(At least Rafa’s half-time ‘chat’ woke NUFC up at Watford – Read HERE)

  • TheFatController

Shame Rafa dropped Yedlin and not Dummett – think dummett needs to use his wing mirrors because twice in two games now players are waltzing in on goal behind him.

As for his sliding ‘what ball’? Non-tackle for the penalty, we should really take it on the chin as it was blatant and we/he probably got away with one at the much more important Leicester game

    • Billmag

Spot on about Dummett I think we need an upgrade.

  • TheNutJob

one comment, we need 5 players, another one is looking forward to next season.
both will end up disappointed if Fatty`s still here because it`ll be more of the same

    • Dave Pattinson

IF Fattys still here? He ain’t going anywhere guys! We would’ve heard something by now if he was selling.

      • Blackburn1066

We could be the next Sunderland

  • ash1001

There no doubt we need an upgrade on Dummett, last 3 games he has been way off it, he just does not look around to see what is happening in his area, then if he sees problems he backs off until its to late and his opponent get the cross in, as the same time he turns his back on the delivery, Sorry Paul I so wanted you to succeed, but its not going to happen unfortunately, Mind you the same can be applied to so many others, Gayle, Murphy, Maquillo etc.
2 – 0 and we still have Lascelles, LeJeune and Dummett passing it among themselves but thats another story.

    • Albert Stubbins

Le June genuinely thinks he’s a footballer. Fatal for a c.b. give me Clarke any day of the week!!

      • Ram Kishore

Yep but sometimes he looks more forward going and creative than others..
I feel like.. he’s similar to David Luiz , more like Cheaper version of him

      • nufcslf

I’ve thought Clarke has more deserved a better chance, especially of how many matches have ended in defeat this season with hom not getting a kick of the ball.

  • Cockneytrev

    Plus points,,
We are safe (thank god) Dubravka kept the goal tally down, shelvey and Diame did ok in midfield,,
    Minus points,,
Manquillo is awful, Murphy is young, but is he really a £10mil player, Gayle is just not good enough, Dummett looks back to his worst ( he had a real purple patch), if the centre halfs are having an off day we look like we will ship goals.
We need 5/6 FIRST team players, not journey men or youngsters with potential (unless they are already playing first team football regular, for a premier club or equivalent).
But most of all we need to keep Rafa. IMO we would have been relegated by now without him.

    • robbersdog

      No, Murphy isn’t a £10m player…he actually cost £12m.

      • Cockneytrev

        Ahhh
That’s where I’m getting it wrong,,
        My apologies,,,

      • gallowgate26

Well he looks like a £1.2m player to me.

        • Blackburn1066

Like Garry Speed in his first season.

    • Blackburn1066

If you look back Garry Speed played like Murphy in his first season at the Toon, my son said at the time he was a great player, ( I thought he was cr-p ) but when we entered season two what a player he became, so lets give Murphy some more time. He may become like Garry Speed a great NUFC player.

      • Albert Stubbins

Robert pires and Thierry Henry were both very poor first season. Turned out to be quite decent players.

        • Ram Kishore

He showed momebts of quapity with moving forward but doesn’t support the defense really well

        • Cockneytrev

          Both again were proven ,,
I wanted us to sign both of them, as I’d watched them quite a bit and they were both quality.
I must admit I didn’t see a lot of Murphy at Norwich maybe he has a lot more to come,, I hope so…

      • Dont stop bobbi fleckman

I remember that, I thought Speed was just all effort in his first few months

      • Cockneytrev

Gary speed was proven premiership player and a cut above Murphy,,
I will give home a chance , my point was , is he a 10/12 mil player,,? I’ve not seen anything that would make me think that, although he does have pace and is direct,, he looks light weight and get knocked off the ball to easy,,,

  • 5floorshigh

first team choices just about scrape the premiership level, second team choices are way off the level………..Gayle once again showing how useless he is, offers nothing, not even a decent pass or lay off comes off him (never mind a goal !)….definitely our worst player of the season.

    • Andy Mac

      Er Joselu ?

      • nufcslf

Both poor and I ‘ve wanted Gayle to perform and be a prem striker. Hasn’t happened.

  • With just one shot on target we can blame our defenders but we were never in this game. Our entire defense was shambolic in the first half and we offered nothing going forward as well. Watford should have been 3-4 up before the break really. Dubravka, Shelvey and Perez only did their usual best, everyone else was on Holiday/ Ritchie and Yedlin livened up the attack but was too late by then.

    • Ram Kishore

Our style of play limits the number of chances created and in the few chances a striker gets he must convert.
We need one striker who could score in those few chances..
Last season we created many chances that enabled him to score a lot

  • Andy Mac

“Five one on aggregate this season against a bang average Watford side”

    • Down Under Mag

And yet we’ve beten Man Utd and Arsenal…sometimes you just hit a team that may not be good on paper but seems to have the wood over you – these things happen. we are afe and hopefully the blinding lack of depth is there for Ashley to see regarding summer spending,

  • Desree

Both bad runs happen when the club announces it is up for sale. Bad run turns to great run when the club announces there is no sale happening.

Do you get the impression the players are trying their best to lower fatties asking price?

Big difference 15th- 10th in value.
