Metro services are set to be badly disrupted today.

Fans travelling to the Newcastle v Chelsea match should allow for this when gauging what time to start their journey to St James Park.

Nexus have released the following information:

There are no Metros between St James and Monkseaton today due to planned modernisation work.

Fans heading to the game from the coast will need to allow extra time to get there for the 3pm kick off.

A replacement bus service will be running in the affected area.

Where possible it may be best for people to travel to Monkseaton by bus then get the Metro from there and head into Newcastle via Four Lane Ends.

A Nexus spokesman said: “We are not always able to postpone weekend works when they clash with football fixtures.

“We understand this is an inconvenience for customers but we have press on with our £350m modernisation programme, which is vital for securing Metro’s long term future.

“A huge amount of works have been packed into this weekend, including the replacement of tracks and junctions, some which had to be carried over due to the severe winter weather.”
