Tottenham 1 Newcastle 0  – Wednesday 9 May 8pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle going down to a one goal defeat at Wembley.

A very decent performance with Newcastle creating the better chances but missing the killer touch.

Jamie Swan:

“Better performance from the lads, frankly not hard after the last few.

“Made Spurs work yet fluffed a number of chances, what’s new?

“Lost by another game by a goal to nil, again, what’s new?

“Having counted this after the West Brom defeat I think that’s ten one nil losses this season and we’ve failed to score fourteen times.

“Always in games and rarely thumped, but desperately need goals inbound these summer hols.

“Not sure we will ever get anywhere enough with Gayle and Perez and even less certain Rafa will be given enough to bring them in.

Hey ho, one to go.”

Paul Lyon:

“Thought we played well, much more like what we’ve become used to since the turn of the year.

“Carried a threat for the majority of the game just lacked cutting edge.

“Didn’t deserve to lose.”

Ben Cooper:

“Two teams on a bad run, it was bound to be settled by one goal.

“They got it, quality goal by a quality player.

“We have none of that quality up front.

“Can’t say I enjoyed the game, only Shelvey lit up the match for us.

“The defence defended well and the forwards ran around and missed their chances.

“Again.”

Nat Seaton:

“Final away journey of the season and although we lost, I’m travelling back with more of a feeling of hope for the future than I did on Saturday.

“Thought we were unlucky to lose tonight.

“Spurs weren’t great but we upped our game from the last few performances.

“Looking forward to the final game of the season on Sunday, here’s hoping we can finish with a good performance and all 3 points…”

Toon Bano:

“So many wasted chances.

“If ever there was a clear sign that a quality centre forward is our main priority, after Rafa staying, then this was it.

“Hopefully the next time we are at Wembley it will turn out a bit better….”

  • Ba ba.

Need a proven striker as requested by rafa.. But its fat boy Ashley we never got one.
Diame outstanding tonight . .crickey who would of thought five months ago.

    • Coach Clagnut

Agree, him and Shelvey ran the show. We played them off the park for the most part and, once again, shyte finishing cost us. Still don’t know how Murphy missed.

      • Kneebotherm8

Did well to get into that position, but the finish was terrible……

      • Tino o

He could have squared it to Gayle who would have passed it back to Loris

        • It was Perez, not Gayle next to the penalty spot.
Murphy should have passed it. The lad’s got guts to try this but clearly not ready for the Prem.
He shows great spark from time to time and deserves to be on the bench at least.

          • Tino o

Wrong player same result clearly not good enough

          • Murphy is a player we should keep, he has shown great mentality at times but this was his first season in the Prem and he lacked experience.
I am happy with the season overall as we did better than I anticipated and if we didn’t have so many key players injured or suspended at certain times could have finished as high as 8th.
With 2-3 quality additions, Rafa and keeping our best player we could be a regular Top 8 side and challenge for one of the Cups to get back to Europe.

  • Andy Mac

Yes we need a striker but if Mitro, Gayle and, hopefully, Joselu leave we’ll need more than one. Don’t want to go into next season hoping our main man doesn’t break down.

    • Angelswithdirtyfaces

yes definitely two strikers as one with an injury and we’re back to being toothless

      • Andy Mac

Just realised what I’ve written there. Ha ha ha I need my head examined. We can’t buy one decent striker because Fatman can’t get his fat chubby hands down his trouser pockets to get the cash out. What chance have we got to bring in two ?

Must be the sun ? I’ll go and lie down

        • Angelswithdirtyfaces

but supporting the Toon is always a triumph of hope over experience

  • Coach Clagnut

For the want of a ha’porth of tar.

  • Kneebotherm8

Gayle is totally lacking in this division………..championship quality, only,I’m afraid…..the whole of our striking department needs a revamp…..

  • Paul Patterson

Gayle is decent as back up, but £25m+ needs to go on a striker. Plus Kenedy, plus Dubravka, plus a right back. There’s a heart attack happening in Stalag Luft Shirebrook . .

    • Leazes.

Its the clubs income and all premiership clubs get at least/ around the same so we compete with them or we don’t. If we don’t then the fourteenth most valuable squad in the division will definitely be relegated…. it’s not so much ‘how much we spend’ its how much we compete, and challenge for players and show ambition as a club.

If Mitrovic is a £20m player then we really need to raise expectation and not be fobbed off with chronicle headlines proclaiming ‘United in for £12m Ace’. The quality of the squad needs to be raised in line with the clubs competing for European places and at Eighth in the valuation table there is an £80-100m shortfall….. that is where we are at….that’s why we park a bus.

      • Jonathan Drape-Comyn

That is probably the first time i have ever agreed with you – word for word.

        • Leazes.

          You probably misread it.

  • 5floorshigh

did ok…..apart from the usual rubbish waste of space Gayle……so bad I was pleased when Joselu came on (only jesting)

    • Philippines

I actually picked Joselu in my team pick above Gayle. My reasoning is that, given more game time he might turn in something good. Gayle has been consistently ineffective.

      • nufcslf

Both poor and had more than enough playing time this season to prove it. Neither should be here next season, but both will be starter’s in a Pardew run side heading back to the Championship.

        • porciestreet

          NO NO NO NO NO…!

      • porciestreet

You might have to plug him in first or check his batteries.

  • TheFatController

Seems we all want Rafa to stay but Gayle to go.

When Keith bishop relays this info back to MA, by August Gayle will still be here and Rafa will be gone no doubt …

There’s nothing like listening to your paying customers in business.

  • robbersdog

Just think what we could’ve achieved this season with a decent, goal-scoring centre-forward in the side.

We’ve got a tradition of great No.9s at Newcastle – Milburn, Macdonald, Shearer etc, and I’d love to see us embrace that tradition once again. If all we can afford is one, or preferably two top-class goal-scorers in this Summer’s transfer window, then that’s what we should spend the money on.

    • ghostrider

      We had a tradition.

    • Leazes.

Yup no other club has number 9s.

  • porciestreet

From my perch here in Greece, I would like to give special thanks to our fantastic away supporters.
So much of the backbone of the team this season is down to them.
(remember when it was me going to stupid places on a wet n windy Wednesday night).
    Thanks to everyone…HWTL.

  • Billmag

Put Kane in our team we would have been 3-0 up at halftime unfortunately the owner thinks £5ml is enough to spend on a striker.
